Lisbon (里斯本) is one of the oldest capitals in Europe. It is on the western coast of Portugal (葡萄牙). Its rich history, colorful traditions and more modern attractions make it a fascinating city.

Anyone lucky enough to visit Lisbon will find a lot of things to see and do. You can start your tour from the Castle of Sao Jorge. The castle was built on a hill many years ago. When you stand on the top of the castle, you can enjoy a good view of the city. Then you can go to Alfama, which is the oldest part of Lisbon. Visitors can walk along its narrow streets where they can see fish sellers who are carrying baskets on their heads. The baskets are very heavy, but they can carry them easily.

Next, you can go to Baixa, a busy shopping area of the city. It offers lots of handmade souvenirs and some wonderful clothes.

Lisbon's nightlife is relaxing and different. Visitors can have a coffee in Bairro Alto, the ancient port of the city. You can enjoy traditional Portuguese music there. The music fills the air with its sad and romantic sounds. You can also enjoy delicious seafood at first-class restaurants. At last, for those who like to dance, there are many clubs everywhere.

Lisbon is a wonderful city. If you want to experience the beauty and fascination of a great European city, it will be the perfect place for you.

Ants can't talk, but this doesn't stop them. Ants communicate buy leaving chemicals from their bodies for other ants to smell. For example, if an ant finds a piece of food, it will send out chemicals that say "there is food here". The other ants will follow their noses toward the food until it is all gone. On the other hand, if there is something dangerous around, ants will send chemicals that say "Stay away".

The ant colony is made up of three classes, the queen, the workers and the male ants. Life in a colony is very organized. Each member has a job to do. The queen has one role, to lay eggs. She does not rule over the other ants, but has the most important job, the whole colony would even die if there was no queen. Queen ants can live up to fifteen years!

The worker ants may have one or several jobs. Some of these jobs are to gather food for the colony, protect the nest from predators (掠夺者) and look after the queen and young ants.

Bird strikes usually happen when a plane is taking off or landing. In 2022, there were 16,960 animal strikes in the US and most of them were bird strikes.

Although most bird strikes do not damage (破坏) planes, some can be very serious. In 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 hit a group of birds after taking off. Both of its engines (引擎) stopped working, and the plane had to land on the Hudson River in New York City. Big birds can cause a lot of damage, but even small birds can break windows. Sadly, bird strikes almost always end up killing the birds.

To stop bird strikes, airports use many ways. For example, some use loud sounds to drive birds away, and others remove birds' food source (来源) and homes by covering grassy areas. However, birds can get used to loud sounds, and covering green land is bad for the environment.

Now, airports are trying new ideas. At Salt Lake City Airport, people let pigs eat the eggs of nearby birds. At Southwest Florida Airport, people use dogs to drive birds away. Some airports even use special ways to find birds. With these new ideas, people hope to keep birds away from planes and make flying safer in the future.

Jiang's love for animals started early when he was a child. He often helped save animals when they were in danger. The first animal he helped save was a turtle (水龟). "One day, my father brought home a turtle and wanted me to keep it as a pet. But I said no and asked my father to put it back into the river," Jiang said.
