In Caroline's eyes, her dog Sam means more. This special dog has completely changed her life.

Caroline had some hearing loss when she was a child, but she lived a normal life. However, when she was in her twenties, her hearing loss got worse and even simple conversations (交谈) could be very tiring. Since then, she has lived in a quiet world with no sound.

One day, when Caroline was shopping in a shop, suddenly she found she was the only person there. All the other people left as soon as the fire alarm rang. But she didn't hear it at all. She knew that it was the time for her to ask for help.

Caroline wrote to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, a famous charity in the UK, to ask for a hearing dog. Later the hearing dog Sam came into her life.

Sam alerts (使意识到）Caroline to the alarm clock in the morning. He also alerts her to the doorbell, alarms and smoke alarms. With Sam's help, Caroline can go out whenever and wherever she wants to go.

"With Sam by my side, I now have my confidence back. He can let me know what I need to know," said Caroline excitedly. "I feel safe. I cannot imagine the life without him."

Born in 1927, Yang Shanzhou spent most of his life working for the government (政府) in Yunnan. When he retired (退休) at 61, Yang did not want to live comfortably in the city. Instead, he returned to his hometown. There, he dedicated (奉献) the rest of his life to planting trees.

When Yang began his tree-planting project in the Daliang Mountains, the area had few trees and little water. Many families there were very poor. Yang believed that by planting a forest, he could help better the environment and people's living conditions (条件) there.

The project needed a lot of hard work. The conditions under which Yang lived were far from the comforts of city life. For the first ten years, he lived in a small house with no bed and no lights. He also used his own money to pay the workers helping him with the project. Although the work was difficult, Yang would still like to plant a forest there.

For 22 years, Yang kept planting trees. In 2009, when his health started to fail, Yang gave the forest to the government. He died the next year, as a local hero.

Today, life for the people in the Daliang Mountains has become much better. Water now flows freely in the area and many important plants can grow. The great green forest acts as a living memory of Yang Shanzhou's excellent and selfless (无私的) work.

交通规则 traffic rules

Safety is very important to everyone. 

Everywhere we go, no matter how old we are, we must follow safety rules. Though many people might not see the purpose of, say, stopping at a stop sign or driving at the speed limit (限制), rules keep us safe. 

People start to learn about the importance of rules when they are children. Needless to say, there are many rules that teach children right from wrong and how to keep themselves and their friends safe. For example, children learn safety rules when they walk in the hallway at school. Teachers tell them not to run because they may hurt themselves or run into another student. In the lunchroom, children should sit nicely while they eat because they are more likely to choke (哽噎) if they are jumping around. On the playground, they are told to use the equipment (设备) properly. For example, they should not go down the slide (滑梯) backward or climb up the slide when someone is going down because there can be an accident. 

High school students will also learn safety rules but at a different level than younger children. High school students may be taught, for example, safety rules in the science lab. Lab safety is very important because if one thing is done wrong, it can result in a fire or a bad accident.
