"My heart tells me that music is the thing I truly want to do, not for fame or money," Chou said. That's why we luckily have such a music genius, who has composed (作曲) lots of pop songs that are well known to everyone since then.

A Brave Guess

In the late 1800s, a scientist named Alfred Wegener was interested in studying the map. He came up with a brave guess. He thought that all the continents once formed one huge land. A single large ocean was around this super-continent.

Floating " Ships"

Why do the continents look this way? Scientists believe that natural forces under the earth make the continents move and form the lands and oceans this way.

Over many, many centuries, slowly, the super-continent broke into two continents. One of them began to move to the north. Then it broke again, forming North America, Europe, and Asia. The gap between North America and Europe became part of the Atlantic Ocean.

The second continent also broke apart to form South America, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. The continents were like floating ships at sea, moving to where they are nowadays.

Finding Evidence

It sounds unbelievable, but scientists have found evidence to support the guess. Firstly, it is the fossils. Ancient plants and animals of the same type were discovered both in South America and in Africa. Did they develop at the same time in two faraway places? It seems unlikely. Biologists believe that there must have been land bridges or other land connections that are unseen now.

The coastlines of the continents also seem to fit together. The east coast of South America can fit into the lower west coast of Africa. The east coast of North America matches parts of Africa and Europe's coasts. It seems as if they fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle(拼图).

Mountain rocks help explain the truth, too. Scientists has recognized a mountain chain that is more than four hundred million years old. It runs down the eastern part of Greenland and western Norway. Then it goes through north-west Scotland and Ireland before it reaches western Canada. Finally, it finds its way to north-west Africa.

One day, Jack ran away from the orphanage. He came upon a park and saw the disabled boy playing in the sandbox there. He ran over to the boy and asked him if he had ever wanted to fly like a bird.

"No," said the boy. "But I have wondered what it would be like to walk and run like other boys and girls."

"That is very sad," said Jack. "Do you think we could be friends?"

"Sure," said the boy.

The two boys played for hours. They made sand castles and made really funny sounds with their mouths. The sounds made them laugh happily. Then the boy's father came with a wheelchair to pick up his son. Jack ran over to the boy's father and whispered something in his ear.

"That would be OK," said the man.

Jack ran over to his new friend and said, "You are my only friend. I wish that there was something I could do to make you walk and run like other little boys and girls. Sadly, I can't. However, there is something that I can do for you." Then he turned around and told his new friend to sit up onto his back. He then began to run across the grass. Carrying the boy on his back, he ran faster and faster. He ran across the park faster and faster. Soon the wind just whistled across the two little boys' faces.

The little boy's father began to cry as he watched his beautiful little disabled son flapping his arms up and down in the wind, all the while yelling at the top of his voice, "I'm flying!"

After a while, it began to snow4. The little boy came out again and reminded Yang that Mr. Cheng might spend the whole aftermoon meditating. He invited Yang to warm himself in the house to5 the wind and snow. But Yang kept standing in the snow and waiting outside in order that he could ask Cheng's6 on the question.

As soon as Cheng finished meditating, the boy reported that Yang was waiting outside. When Cheng7 this, he came out to see Yang. When the door was opened, everyone was8. Students often learn their lessons in class. They sit in the classroom listening to their teachers. This is a way of learning. Is this the only way for students to learn? Of course not. How to teach yourself? The first thing is to read. Read something you are interested in. The second is that you must ask yourself questions. A clever student is usually good at asking questions. Read an English book, newspaper or magazine.

Reading is a necessary part of learning a new language, so don't forget to read! Find something you are really interested in whether that's a famous English novel, a copy of The New York Times, or a fashion magazine, and then start working your way through it. If you find the content (内容) boring, you will be less inclined (倾向于……的) to continue with it.

Again, make an active effort to actually understand what you're reading; don't just skim over it. Mark any words or phrases that you don't understand, and then look them up in the dictionary.

If you're alone, you could also try reading aloud. You will get the benefits of reading aloud. For example, this will allow you to improve your reading comprehension (理解力) as well as your pronunciation.

Keep a diary in English.

Besides reading and listening comprehension, you should also spend some time improving your written English skills. This may be one of the most difficult aspects of your language learning, but it is really important. Writing in English will help you to work on your sentence structure, grammar and spelling.

Try to keep an English diary in which you write down a few sentences every day. It doesn't have to be deeply personal. You could write about the weather, what you ate for dinner or what your plans are for the day. If you feel comfortable with it, get a native speaker to look over what you've written and check it for any mistakes. This will help you to avoid making the same mistakes over and over again.

A Southern California student named Madison Atkinson is regarded as her family's hero. Madison, a 15-year-old girl, used CPR skills that she learned at school to help save her 3-year-old relative during a holiday gathering.

It happened on Thanksgiving as family members were preparing dinner. Relatives at the Northridge home thought 3-year-old Maxine was inside playing with other kids. But surveillance (监控) video shows the little girl wandering into the backyard and leaning over the side of the pool, and then jumping or falling in.

No one else was outside at the time, but a few minutes later Maxine's uncle walked out to the yard and found her face down in the pool. He jumped in, pulled the little girl from the water and yelled for help. Several adults came outside but were only able to watch helplessly when efforts were made to revive (苏醒) the girl.

When Madison saw what was happening, she knew exactly what to do. "I saw that he was trying the Heimlich (海姆利克氏操作法)," she recalled. "But I knew in that case we needed CPR because Maxine didn't seem like she was breathing. I told everyone I knew CPR and it calmed everyone down."

"Then they just laid her down on the ground and I started CPR."

The little girl soon revived and her family says she has since recovered.

Damian Gilbert says he is very proud of his stepdaughter. She was the only one in the house with CPR training and he finds it remarkable that she was able to take control and save a life. "I'm literally watching a 15-year-old girl basically bring back our niece, a 3-year-old, to life," Gilbert said. "It was something that I'll remember for the rest of my life."
