1、A Compliment (赞扬)
When I was about fourteen, I was going through a really difficult time. I often felt lonely. At school, I didn't have many close friends, so most of the time I just kept1.In Sweden, we had a class called woodworking. Last term, we needed to make a project, and later we could bring it home. I worked very hard on mine. When it was finally finished, I felt a little proud, but I was more worried. What if (万一) others2 at me? What if they thought my project looked silly?
"Should I really let others see this?" I asked myself. Usually, I would hide it in my backpack so no one would laugh at me. However, this project was so big that I had to carry it by hand. And I tried to hide (藏) it3 behind my body.
Then something unexpected happened. While I was putting on my jacket, I heard a girl behind me whisper (小声说) to her friend, "Wow, that project looks really cool! How well he made it!" Her voice was full of4.
I froze for a second. "Did she really say that?" I thought. I didn't even turn around, but I could feel my face getting warm. A smile appeared on my face. For the first time, I felt like someone5 me in a positive (积极的) way.
That moment gave me6. I decided not to hide my project anymore. Instead, I walked out of the school, holding it high. My best friend Winnie noticed that and asked, "Why are you smiling like that?" I answered, "Because today someone thought my work was cool."
It was just one simple compliment, but it7 something inside me. From then on, I wasn't so afraid to show people my drawings or other things I created. Of course, it didn't make all my problems disappear, but it gave me hope.
Never underestimate (低估) the power of a simple, kind8—it might make a big difference to someone in his or her life.

19、International travel is popular, but visitors can run into trouble if they don't know any basic "rules".
BRAZIL
In general, Brazilian culture is informal. Most Brazilians are very friendly, so you are supposed to greet the people you meet. Normally women kiss on the cheek, but men usually just shake hands. Brazilians usually stand very close to each other while speaking. If you go to a business meeting, you are not expected to take a gift. Yet, if you are invited to someone's house, you should take a gift—like flowers or chocolate.
If you are invited to dinner, arrive at least 30 minutes late, but always dress well, because a person's appearance can be very important to Brazilians.
SAUDI ARABIA (沙特阿拉伯)
Saudi Arabia is a very traditional country. People respect the old and take good care of the young. People shake hands in business situations, but men and women do not touch in public.
Instead, lead the conversation by asking about people's family or health. Arrive on time for business meetings, but don't be surprised if others are late. Being on time is less important in Saudi Arabia than it is in most Western countries.

Last week, a fire happened in Rapa Nui National Park on Chile's Easter Island. The fire caused serious damage (损坏) to several of the large, ancient stone statues (雕像) that the island is famous for.
Easter Island is home to about 900 large stone statues. The large statues were created over 500 years ago by the Rapa Nui people. There are still many questions about how they were able to create, move, and stand up such statues.
Hundreds of stone statues are standing near the Rano Raraku volcano (火山) inside Rapa Nui National Park. The area has been named by the United Nations as an area that's important to protect. Sadly, that's also where the fire was the strongest.
A fire spread quickly through the Rapa Nui National Park on October 4. Park workers and firefighters worked for hours. But the fire spread easily through the grassland around the area. It wasn't until late the next day that the fire was brought under control. The park says it didn't have enough volunteers to fight the fire more quickly.
Experts (专家) are still examining, but it's clear that the fire has damaged some of these stone statues.
The cause of the fire isn't known yet. But Mr Edm unds Paoa, the mayor of Easter Island, believes the fire didn't start naturally. "All the fires on Rapa Nui are caused by humans," he said. He believes the island needs more government support to be able to deal with situations like this one.
The stone statues have made Easter Island a very popular tourist site. Easter Island has about 160,000 visitors a year, and it has now been closed as experts try to learn more about the damage caused by the fire.
