My family had never done anything different before. So when Aunt Jen invited us to her 1 spring farm party, I was really excited. I decided to make the day special, so I baked cupcakes for the party and decorated them to look like soft sheep by using some 2 .

"Yummy!" My sister Indi said with a laugh, quickly stealing a candy.

"That's enough, Indi! I need those for my sheep!"

    "Do real sheep eat these?"

"They're just for making the cupcakes look 3 !" I laughed too.

Soon, Indi and my brother Tex joined in. They 4 so many candies that their cupcakes looked more like strange animals than my sheep.

"Time to go now," Dad announced.

But things didn't go 5 as usual. First, Tex couldn't find his shoes. Then Mom realized she'd 6 her wallet at home. Halfway to Aunt Jen's, Indi suddenly needed a bathroom. We had to take a long way to find one. Dad then 7 a new back road, but it only led us farther away. As we were in the middle of nowhere, our car started making a strange noise and 8 .

A huge butterfly gently landed on Indi's knee. Nearby, two small rabbits 12 across the grass, happily eating. Suddenly, we heard a loud rustling, and hundreds of birds shot up from the trees, flying into the sky in huge circles above us.

We never made it to Aunt Jen's farm, 14 that didn't matter. Sitting in that field, enjoying my cupcakes under the open sky, I understood something important: when things don't work out, disappointments (失望) may 15 unexpected wonders. Keep your eyes open, and you might find joy right under your nose!

  • 5、 阅读短文,根据短文内容,将下面的句子还原到文章中,使短文内容完整。每个选项仅使用一次,有一个多余选项。

Talk to people you disagree with

Everyone sometimes has disagreements with friends or family members. For example, you might not agree about what game to play or which restaurant makes the best pizza.  Disagreements are uncomfortable. There are some steps you can take to make the conversation meaningful. Here is how.

Let them know that you're paying attention to them by listening carefully with interest. Another way to show that you're listening is by asking questions or repeating what they said. You can start by saying, "OK. I understand you. You are saying…"

When someone has an opinion you don't agree with, don't pay too much attention to it. Avoid using impolite adjectives, like "stupid" "foolish" or "silly". Instead, focus on speaking calmly (沉着地). For example, you may begin with "I feel" or "I see this in another way".

If you have a strong opinion, it's better to stick to the facts instead of feelings.  Then relax your shoulders and speak in a calm voice. If you are stopped by some person, you can remind the person that it's your turn to speak. Then give him another chance to speak later.

If you find that you can't change the other person's mind, and they may not change yours. Still, look for the points you agree on.  In the end, it's worth the effort because healthy communication builds strong relationships and communities.

    A. Even if you disagree with someone, you can still listen to what they say.

    B. You may also get a better understanding of each other's opinion.

    C. If this happens to you, you'd better say sorry to your friends.

    D. Sometimes you may disagree with your friends about more serious subjects.

    E. Start by asking if you can share your opinion.

What will you do if you have disagreements with your friends?(No more than 15 words.)

Lightning usually destroys (破坏) trees it hits. But scientists have found an amazing tree. It not only lives through lightning strikes (击中) but actually grows better because of them!

For years, scientists thought lightning was only bad for trees. But as they explored places like the Amazon rainforest, they started to think there could be trees that fight against lightning. It wasn't until about 100 years ago that such "super trees" were discovered. Now, they know of a tree that uses lightning's power to kill nearby trees and get more sunlight and nutrients (营养) for itself.

In 2015, scientist Evan Gora saw a Dipteryx oleifera tree, which had been struck by strong lightning. It wasn't badly harmed while the neighboring trees were killed. Scientists thought this tree could handle lightning, but there was no way to be sure.

Gora and his team saw more of these trees that grew well after lightning strikes. So they did a study. They followed 93 trees struck by lightning for 2—6 years. They found that all 9 Dipteryx oleifera trees in the study survived with little harm. But 84 other trees were badly hurt, and 64% of them died within two years.

These Dipteryx oleifera trees are very tall and have wide tops, making them 68% more likely to be struck by lightning than other trees. During the study, one of the Dipteryx trees was struck twice in 5 years yet continued to grow well.

At present, more studies suggest that these trees attract (吸引) lightning on purpose to destroy other trees and grow better. Scientists are not sure how these trees survive lightning, but they guess it may involve the trees' ability to carry electricity. They are also interested in other trees with similar characteristics.

(1)、What is special about the Dipteryx oleifera tree?
A、It dies quickly after lightning strikes. B、It takes in nutrients directly from lightning. C、It grows better after being struck by lightning. D、It avoids lightning by hiding under other trees.
(2)、What does the underlined word "handle" in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A、Mix up. B、Give out. C、Suffer from. D、Deal with.
(3)、Why do Dipteryx oleifera trees attract lightning?
A、To get more water from the sky. B、To kill nearby trees for growth. C、To become shorter and stronger. D、To protect other trees around them.
(4)、What might scientists do next according to the text?
A、Plant more Dipteryx oleifera trees. B、Study how trees attract lightning better. C、Find out where Dipteryx oleifera trees live. D、Look for more trees that can survive lightning.

The sun hung low, brushing gold over the empty area. The air buzzed (喧闹)—not with insects, but with voices, cameras, and the weight of something about to begin.

Roy's heart beat like a drum. He looked out at the people gathering for the pancake house ground-breaking ceremony (仪式). Behind him stood the company men and the reporters. And under his feet—hidden underground—were the tiny burrows (洞穴) of the owls.

No sign marked them. No fence protected them. They asked nothing, made no sound, yet now heavy machines waited, ready to destroy (破坏) their living area.

He thought of Mullet Fingers, the wild boy who cared about animals more than himself. He thought of brave Beatrice who helped even when it was hard. Roy had tried to stay out of trouble. He liked quiet. But now, staying quiet didn't feel right.

He stepped up to the microphone (话筒).

"Excuse me," he said, voice shaking. "Before you dig…you should know the truth."

    The crowd (人群) grew quiet.

"There are owls living here," Roy said. "They're small. They're scared. And if you build here, you'll destroy their homes."

Someone in the crowd laughed. A reporter asked, "How do you know that?"

"Because I saw them. I stood right there and watched them. They live here. They belong here. And they matter."

The manager stepped forward, "This is not your business, kid."

Roy turned to face him. His fear turned into something else—strength.

"It's my business. It's everyone's business. We can't just destroy what we don't see. Progress should not come at the cost of wonder," he said.

His hands stopped shaking. People in the crowd began whispering. One mother held her child's hand. A teacher nodded. Even the manager looked uncertain.

Roy didn't know what would happen next. But he did what he could. He spoke the truth.

Roy used to be scared. But doing the right thing made him stronger.

Sometimes, doing what you can is enough to shift (改变) the wind.

A、His teacher. B、Mullet Fingers and Beatrice. C、The manager. D、The newspaper reporters.
(2)、Why was Roy speaking to the crowd at the ceremony?
A、To raise money for wildlife. B、To protect the owls' living area. C、To advertise the pancake house. D、To welcome people from other towns.
(3)、What does the underlined sentence in the passage mean?
A、Extra cost should be paid to protect nature. B、There's nothing more important than progress. C、Nature shouldn't be destroyed for development. D、People should cut the cost of creating wonders.
(4)、What can we learn from Roy's story in the passage?
A、Silence sometimes speaks louder than actions. B、Finding out the truth needs patience and wisdom. C、Knowing yourself helps you make the right choice. D、Standing up for nature takes courage but it's worth it.

Inside the hall, the door was shut, and the key lay on the glass stand. Poor Alice, who was about one foot high after taking some drink, found a cake on the floor. She went up and soon ate all the cake.

"How strange, how tall I am", said Alice. She looked down at her feet— they seemed so far off. In fact, she was now over nine feet high, which meant she still couldn't get through the door. She sat down and had a good cry till there was a large pool all around her.

Suddenly, she heard the sound of feet not far off. It was the Rabbit that had come back, with a fan in his hand. Alice felt so in need of help from someone that when he came near, she called out, "If you please, sir..." The Rabbit started as if shot, dropped the fan and ran off as fast as possible.

Alice picked up the fan, and as the hall was hot, she fanned herself. "Dear, dear How strange all things are today I do wish to get out of the hall ____" she said.

Then she noticed herself in the glass— she was now not more than two feet high, and still shrinking quite fast. That was the fan. She realised this and dropped it at once, or she would shrink to the size of an ant soon.

Alice was in a sad fear at the quick change. "Things are worse," said the poor girl,"I was never so small as this. How can I get out?" As she said these words, she lost her footing and was up to her chin (下巴) in salt water— her own tears.

Just then Alice noticed a mouse swimming towards her.

"Will it be useful now to speak to this mouse? All things are so strange here. I should think maybe it can talk. At least there's no harm in trying." So she swam up.

Hundreds of years ago, ideas like flying to another city through the air sounded like dreams. Yet now scientific study has made them real. Could other fairy tales come true someday?

    Sleeping Beauty

Could anyone sleep for 100 years? Probably not. The daily cycle of sleep and waking is set in your body. But animals like bears can hibernate (冬眠) through the winter until it warms.

If scientists can work out how animals hibernate, maybe one day people could hibernate too. It would be great for astronauts to sleep through the long space journey. But hibernating animals still grow older, so a future Sleeping Beauty might wake up as a Sleeping Grandma.

    Talk to Animals

Talking to animals isn't quite easy. But scientists are trying. Tiny cameras and microphones have collected thousands of hours of animal conversations. Powerful computer programs study animal sounds and match them with possible meanings. Soon they may let us talk back.

But there are still challenges. Many animals communicate with smells, body language, and sounds that humans can't hear. And animals don't think like people. So, when we think they're giving directions to the castle, they're more likely to be saying "This is my tree!"

    Let Down Your Hair

Rapunzel lowers her long hair to let visitors in. But could hair really hold up a prince?

Surprisingly, yes! A scientific study has found out that a single hair can hold 3 ounces, the weight of a small tomato. And a common head has about 100,000 hairs. All those together could hold up a couple of elephants. A prince? No problem.

However, Rapunzel would also need a shorter tower. Human hair only grows a few feet long. The longest hair ever recorded is about 18 feet long—pretty short for a tower.

(1)、If astronauts could hibernate, they would ____.
A、stop growing completely B、sleep through space travel C、need more food and water D、communicate with animals
(2)、Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A、Animals think like people in giving directions. B、Scientists have succeeded in talking back to animals. C、A common person's hair could hold up a giant panda. D、Rapunzel in the fairy tale has the longest hair in history.
(3)、What is the main purpose of this passage?
A、To discuss new inventions for space travel. B、To tell us how scientists influence fairy tales. C、To compare different animals' talking habits. D、To show scientific possibilities behind fairy tales.

Chinese soldiers are now welcoming some new "teammates": robot dogs. These China-made robots recently showed their amazing s at the China-Cambodia "Golden Dragon 2024" joint exercise (联合演习) in May.

During the joint exercise, Chinese team members were able to control remotely (遥控) a robot dog called Go2. It quickly checked for obstacles (障碍物) like fences and old tires. With cameras on its head, Go2 can send l video back to headquarters.

Go2 is also very small. It weighs only 15 kilograms. It can do things like jumping, moving backward and even lying down-just like a real dog. It can work for two to four hours at a time before it needs a "rest".

    The Last Drop

Emma still remembered the river of her childhood — crystal clear, brimming with fish, and shaded by willow trees whose branches kissed the water. She and her friends swam in it during summers, their laughter echoing across the fields. But now, when Emma returned to the village, she was shocked. As she stood on the same riverbank, she saw a different scene: the water was dirty, littered with plastic bottles and floating rubbish, and the willows had dried. A sign read: No Swimming. Dangerous Water.

Her heart sank. She recalled her grandfather's stories about how this river had nurtured (养育) their village for generations. Today, it smelled of decay (腐烂). Later, in school, her teacher explained how industrial waste and plastic pollution had polluted the river. "Water is life," the teacher said, "but we've taken it for granted."

That afternoon, Emma decided to take action. She started a "Save Our River" campaign at school, organizing clean-up drives and writing to local officials. Slowly, others joined — students, teachers, even farmers. They removed trash, planted new trees, and monitored water quality. Months later, though the river wasn't fully healed, Emma saw hopeful signs: dragonflies returning, water clearing, and children watching from the bank with curiosity.

She knew it was just a start. One year later, Emma visited the river again. ____________________
