Chinese has a history of thousands of years. But Pinyin doesn't. It tells people how to pronounce Chinese words. This year, Pinyin turns 67 years old. 

In 1958, Chinese linguist (语言学家) Zhou Youguang and his team made Pinyin. Before that, Chinese people used many other ways to show how to pronounce Chinese words. But these ways are not as easy to use as Pinyin. Because of Pinyin, more people learn how to read. 

Pinyin is a big part of our daily life. We learn to speak Putonghua with the help of Pinyin. We write Chinese on computers by using Pinyin. 

Pinyin is young. But it is now very popular outside China. It is becoming a bridge between China and other countries. Many people around the world start to learn Chinese by learning Pinyin. You might say "nihao" to mean "hello" to a foreign friend. 

People are using Pinyin more often than before. For example, some foreigners don't use "dumplings". They like to use "jiaozi". And "mantou" is for "steamed bun". The Oxford English Dictionary (《牛津英语词典》) has more than 100 Chinese words in Pinyin, such as zhongguomeng for "China Dream", and wanggou for "online shopping". 

We all know about Mozart (莫扎特). He is a famous musician from Austria. Many people think that his success was because of his talent. But he was also very hard-working. 

Talent is something that you have naturally (天生地). It can make you become successful more easily. But being talented is not enough for most people to be successful. 

Do you know the story Shang Zhongyong? Zhongyong is a very talented boy. He wrote a poem (诗) when he was very young. Many people felt surprised about what he wrote. His father thought he didn't need to study as hard as other people. After years, Zhongyong learned nothing, so he couldn't write great poems.

Teaching middle school students bike riding skills as part of physical education classes may improve their mental health, according to a new study. The research examined the effects of a 6-week cycling program in the US schools and found significant mental health benefits for students. 

The study involved over 1,200 students aged 11 to 14 who participated in a program called Ride for Focus, run by the nonprofit organisation Outride. Students attended cycling classes at least three days a week for six weeks, learning safety and manoeuvring (操纵) skills while enjoying the outdoor physical activity. Before and after the program, students completed questionnaires to measure their well-being. 

"We saw mental health benefits across the entire population," said Sean Wilson, the study's senior author. "The main outcome was a more positive outlook on life. " Exercise, including cycling, is known to improve mental health, and middle school is a critical time for such interventions (干预), as students often face social pressures, anxiety, and stress. 

Esther Walker, a program manager at Outride, highlighted the social and physical benefits of cycling. "Riding with peers in a safe setting is important for adolescents (青少年)," she said. "It provides an outlet for stress and promotes physical activity. "

Dr Allan Reiss, a professor at Stanford University, noted that cycling engages many brain functions, such as sensory perception, balance, and navigation. "It's also often a group activity, which adds social benefits," he said. While exercise is not a cure-all, it is a powerful tool for mental health. 

The study also found that students who limited screen time and got adequate sleep saw greater improvements in well-being. Although girls reported increased well-being after the program, their gains were smaller compared to boys. 

Overall, the study suggests that cycling programs in schools can be a valuable addition to physical education, offering both mental and physical health benefits to adolescents. 

Farmer John and Farmer Bob were neighbours. For more than 30 years, they had been getting along very well. 

Then their good relationship (关系) broke. It began with a small thing, then bitter (仇恨的) words, and then weeks of silence (沉默). One morning John woke up to find a stream between the two farms. "It must be Bob," John thought. 

Then one day there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a carpenter (木匠) standing at the doorway.

John and Nick are best friends and they hang out together almost every day. However, about a month ago, they got into the biggest fight. 

It started on a Sunday when Nick went over to John's house to play tennis. But John said he wanted to go to watch his elder brother's football game instead. When Nick asked if he could go too, John said no. Nick felt hurt. He asked why he couldn't go. John got angry and said, "I want to do something without you for a change!" On Monday at school, Nick was so angry that he left a note on John's desk. John was really sad after reading the note.
