Around the world, people have different ideas about what good table manners are. In India, for example, people only eat with their right hands. And their left hands stay still. Eating with your left hand is very rude!

In Western countries, people do not usually share the same dishes. Everyone has his or her own plate of food. You eat with a knife and fork and you should not wave（挥）them around when you are not eating. And you should try not to be noisy when eating.

When you go to some restaurants in different parts of the world, it is important to know what people think is rude. For example, in China it's OK to be noisy in a restaurant. In fact, if a restaurant is not noisy, you may think it is not very good. However, in many Western countries, restaurants are quiet places. If a table is too noisy, other customers might not be happy.

Paying for the meal is also different from country to country. In China, one person usually pays for everyone. In Western countries, when friends eat together, they usually share the cost. This is called "going Dutch". When Westerners pay the check, they usually leave some money for the waiter. This is called "leaving a tip". Not leaving a tip is very rude. In the USA, it's common to leave tips of 10%, 15% or 20% of the check.

When visiting a foreign country, it's normal for us to ask the way. Since we are not native [讲(某种语言)的人]，we should ask for (方向) in a proper way. Here are some tips.

· Starting the (交谈)with a greeting is a must. For example, if you want some help from a person who is (经过) by, you can say such as "Hello""Good afternoon" or" (原谅) me, could you please help me?"

· Know how to ask a question (正确地). It's a good idea to use some modal verbs. For example, you can ask like"Excuse me, may I ask you how to get to the Eaton Center?" This sounds much more (有礼貌的) than"Hi! How to get to the Eaton Center?"

· Don't be afraid of using landmarks. You can save some time if you know what the important landmarks are in the city. For example, in London, the main landmark is BigBen. You can say,"My friend told me it is near and (在······旁边) Big Ben, but I can't find it."

There is no (仓促) to get to the place, or you may get lost. And don't laugh at yourself if you truly get lost. We may all get lost now and then, (尤其) when visiting a new city.
