Are you interested in talent shows? Talent shows are getting more and more popular. All these shows have one thing  common. They try to look for the  (good) performers, such as the most talented dancers, the most exciting  (magic), the funniest actors. All kinds of people join these shows. But who will win? It's your turn to choose one of  (they). People usually play a role in  (decide) who will win while watching the show. The winner always gets a very good prize. And he or she maybe  (become) very famous, too.

Many people like watching them perform beautifully on stage, but not everybody enjoys  (watch) these shows. Some actors like to make up stories  (get) more support. For example, some people say they are poor farmers,  in fact they are just actors. So don't take these shows too  (serious). They are fun to watch. And one great thing about them is that they give people a way close to their dreams.

Su Shi is also called Su Dongpo. He is known to us  his ci in Chinese books. He has  not only in poems, but also for his thinking. When he is in Huangzhou, Hubei, he  to enjoy life there. He names a place Dongpo and makes Dongpo Pork, a  Chinese dish. Many of his poems  Calming the Waves(定风波) are written there. Its line "Impervious to wind, rain or shine, I'll have my will. (归去！也无风雨也无晴)" shows his open mind.

Hello, I'm Amy. I study at Yuying Middle School. Our school is big and nice. We can do a lot of activities at school. We finish our lessons at 3:30 p. m. and then we can go to different kinds of clubs. I like drawing, so I go to the drawing club. There we can draw together and sometimes our art teacher comes to teach us. My friend Tom usually draws pictures there with me. Tina likes swimming, so she often goes to the swimming club. There she can learn to swim well. Ken's favourite sport is basketball and he is a member of the basketball club. He plays basketball three times a week. My sister Kate and I are in the same school. She likes singing and dancing. She can sing and dance very well. Her music teacher likes her a lot. Sometimes, when she doesn't want to go to the music club, she comes to draw pictures with me.

A Chinese girl shares her exciting stories as a mountaineer

17岁中国女生登顶非洲最高峰

On Jan 1, 2024, Xu Zhuoyuan, a 17-year-old girl from Hunan, climbed Kilimanjaro, the tallest peak (山峰) in Africa. In May 2023, she even stood on top of Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰).

Training for the peaks

Four years ago, Xu went on a family trip to Sichuan. She climbed Mount Siguniang and loved it. That's when she started to enjoy climbing. "I practiced a lot by climbing mountains in Yunnan and Sichuan every month. I also do exercises like running, swimming and rope skipping (跳绳) every day," said Xu. She worked hard and trained her body to be strong for the big climb.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

On Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, it's like a desert (沙漠) of over 4,000 meters with big temperature changes. Xu climbed for seven days and faced rain and strong winds. Xu had to be careful about the temperature and wear the right clothes. She learned a lot during the climb. For example, she climbed with Xia Boyu. He was the first Chinese climber to reach the top of Mount Everest with a prosthetic (假肢的) leg. "Even though Xia is almost 74 years old, he kept going. Xia encouraged (鼓励) me," said Xu. 

Future goals

Xu wants to climb the seven tallest mountains and go to the North and South Poles (极点) before she turns 18. She also wants to learn how to help climbers with knee (膝盖) problems like her dad.
