Have you heard of the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon)? It was held in Chengdu from October 18 to 22, 2023. Worldcon is the biggest sci-fi event in the world. It has been held since 1939. This was the first time the event had been held in China.

During the event, the winners of the year's Hugo Awards were announced (宣布). The awards are very famous in the science fiction world. They are voted on by members of Worldcon. Chinese sci-fi writers and artists enjoyed a big night on October 21.

The Space-Time Painter won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette. It was written by part-time writer Hai Ya. "I'm very lucky," he said. "It's like my dream shining into reality." He hopes that his works can make more people think about technology, time and art.

Besides that, Zhao Enzhe won the Best Professional Artist award. The artist has worked in the game industry for more than 20 years. He has been making covers for China's Science Fiction World magazine for a long time. The magazine is the best-selling one of its kind in the world.

In addition, China's Zero Gravity Newspaper won the Best Fanzine award. Four works by Chinese writers were shortlisted (入围) for the Best Short Story award.

Over the past years, a lot of Chinese science fiction works have been translated into many different languages. They have attracted (吸引) more and more readers around the world. The influence of Chinese science fiction keeps growing!

In 2075, fifteen-year-old Alex lives in a floating (漂浮的) city on the ocean that runs on clean energy. Robots do most housework, but school is still full of learning. 

One sunny morning, Alex's teacher gives some special homework, "Design something that can make the world a better place." His classmates are quickly coming up with exciting ideas— flying gardens, river-cleaning drones (无人机) , and food printers (打印机). Alex, however, wants to make something small but meaningful. 

He imagines a "Smile drone". This small drone can cheer up lonely people by playing their favourite music, sharing a joke, or bringing them a small gift. It uses AI to learn what makes each person happy. He hopes it can bring warmth and joy to their busy and high-tech (高科技的) world. 

When Alex shares his idea, some classmates say that this is too simple. But the teacher smiles and says, "In a world of machines, the greatest invention (发明)  is one that cares for human hearts."

Months later, a technology company (公司) makes Alex's idea real. They send him a message, "Your kindness inspires us. Thank you."

That day, Alex understands— no matter how technology develops, love and care always matter most. Machines can build cities, but only people can build connections.

Three friends—Mia, Alex, and Lily—received an invitation to a time travel experiment in a science lab (实验室). They went there with curiosity. After knowing what they would do, they started their journey with a mix of excitement and worry. 

Suddenly, they found themselves in a different place and saw old shops and people in old-fashioned clothes. That was a busy 18th-century market! While exploring, they noticed a boy Oliver with a worried look. "My father's treasure map was lost but our village needed it."

"We can help," Mia said. Oliver took them to an old library where he last saw the map. There, they found a paper with strange symbols. "It might lead us to the map!" said Alex. After hours of hard work together, they followed the symbols to a forest and found the map. 

With the map, Oliver and his father found lots of gold and silver for their village. Everyone was happy. The friends felt a sense of pride to help people in the past. They realized the past and future are connected—understanding the past was key to a better future. 

"What an experience! I couldn't believe we actually did it!" said Lily on the way back to the lab. They were grateful for the chance to explore the wonders of time. They discovered the power of curiosity, teamwork and friendship. They knew this was only the start. With hope and excitement, the young time travelers were ready for new adventures.

The idea of teamwork is very important to the success of any team. All coaches talk about working as one unit or as a team that plays as one. Teamwork and unselfishness create a great team; without them a team cannot play against other teams. You can have a group of superstars, but if they do not work well together, they are not going to be successful. There are some things to consider when you are looking at your team, like a common goal, communication, support and respect.

A winning team has members that share common goals and a common dream. Teams come together through shared attitudes towards a particular task. (Although they may come together for a number of different reasons, their goals are the same, which is to achieve top performance and experience success.) The ends may be different but the means by which one gets there is the same—teamwork.

Teamwork is something that must be on top of the list. Every member needs to understand how important it is for them to work well together if they want to be successful. Each member must be true to the whole team and be willing to act unselfishly. When challenges come, the team needs to deal with them in a positive manner, which asks every member of the team to encourage and support each other, and try to find a way out at the same time. A sense of teamwork will play an important part in this. Just remember TEAM—Together Everyone Achieves More!

Jiang Danni is a 24-year-old volunteer from China. She has volunteered in schools in Lebanon and countries in Africa. And her videos about her experience have caught many people's attention.

After graduating from university in 2020, Danni chose to work in Africa for a year and then took a trip to seven countries. A primary school in Uganda stopped her. She had a peaceful time getting to know the children at the school. She taught children in Grades One to Four. Danni set up different kinds of classes for her students, including Chinese language learning, and craft.

Danni also tried to care for the students. While staying at a school in Tanzania, she prepared lunch for 40 children below 5 years old. She usually went to the town which was far away from school to buy delicious food for the kids.

In 2022, Danni arrived in Lebanon in Asia and became a volunteer teacher at a school. This time she taught art and craft to her students. She included some interesting activities in her teaching such as paper-cutting and the making of paper ice creams in class. Her students all worked hard and enjoyed the creative activities.

▲ Every time Danni arrived at the school, they would run to give her a hug or small gifts such as candy. And after school, they would invited her to their homes.

"I enjoyed spending beautiful moments with them. Their smiling faces gave me energy and encouraged me to find meaning in volunteer work in different places," Danni said. She has decided to further develop her dream to help others as a lifelong career.

For Chen Sheng, a young man in Meitan, Guizhou Province, caring for the elderly is more than a job—it's a calling in his heart. Chen Sheng was raised by his grandparents, and his dream was to take care of more elderly people when he was little. After graduating in 2017 with a degree in healthcare, Chen Sheng completed eight months of training in a local hospital and started to work in a nursing home.

In his early working days, he met many difficulties. He got up at 6 am to help with morning tasks. Often, his day didn't end until 11 pm. He wanted to quit at first, but after some time, the warmth and trust he received from the elderly changed his mind.

Using his medical knowledge, Chen Sheng takes care of the elderly in a proper way, including physical examination, health guidance, advice on food and so on. Besides medical care, Chen Sheng also gives emotional support. He always offers comfort in time when a grandma or a grandpa is upset. Grandma Sun likes talking with Chen Sheng every day and always shares the things she values. Grandma Sun feels warm and happy because of Chen Sheng. Her family thanks him for his patience and great love.

As the need for elderly care continues to grow, more and more young people have come to work in the nursing home. They are making every effort to take good care of the elderly and make them live happily.
