From lunch boxes and drinking bottes to furniture and clothes, plastic is used to make lots of everyday things. When these things are thrown away, some of them end up in the seas. The plastic takes hundreds of years to break down. Biodegradable（可生物降解的)plastics were invented to deal with this problem.

Biodegradable plastics can break down naturally, but the new problem is they can not break down completely in the sea. Instead, they break down into very small pieces called microplastics, which are often eaten by fish, birds and other animals. The microplastics are known to be harmful.

Recently, scientists have invented a new kind of plastic which could help solve this microplastic problem. It was created by researchers at the RIKEN Centre for Emergent Matter Science in Japan. Unlike other biodegradable plastics, the new plastic fully dissolves （溶解) in salty seawater. When the new plastic dissolves, it breaks up into the separate substances (物质). And then small living things in seawater can break them down completely. Studies have shown that the plastic can break down in a few hours in seawater, and in around 10 days in soil.

The new plastic has other benefits, too. It is not poisonous. When it is burned, the gas (气体) it produces won't pollute the environment. The plastic can be made hard or shaped into different forms at temperatures above 120C, so it could be used to make various kinds of things. Takuzo Aida, who led the research, said the new plastic is "strong and recyclable", and can be used in lots of ways, for example, in replacing single-use plastics. Joaquin Martinez Urreaga, from Polytechnic University of Madrid, called the idea ""a promising product to deal with marine pollution".

Eliud Kipchoge was born in a small village in Kenya. As the smallest of the four children in his family, little Kipchoge often rode his bicycle to sell milk. He also had to run 3.2 kilometres to get to school.

For a long time, running was just a hobby. Then he met Patrick Sang who later became his long-term coach. In 2oo2, Kipchoge started training for 5,000 metres and got the 2003 world 5000m title. This was what happened before he turned to marathons in 2013. Over the next ten years, he achieved great success in marathons, including two Olympic gold medals, two world records, and the sub-two-hour marathon in 2019, proving what he has said, "no human is limited (有限的)."

The Life in the Future

The Spring Festival, an important Chinese holiday, has been  (successful) added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录) by UNESCO on December 4th, 2024. This list is for important cultural things that people should not forget. China has the  (many) items (项目) on this list, 44 in all.

January  early February. Millions of people go back home for the festival, making it the largest human migration (迁移) on the earth. Before the Spring Festival, people are busy  (prepare).

 Zhang Xirui from Shenzhen Gezhi Academy in Guangdong got a good idea. He made a useful tool—a smart homework collection (收集) robot. This made him win the first prize in the 20th Guangdong Provincial Children's Invention Awards.

 This robot uses RFID (射 频 识 别 ) technology to help collect students' notebooks. Each student's notebook has a special RFID tag (标签) with the name and the subject. Students only need to put their notebooks on the robot, and the machine "sees" the notebook, reads its tag and takes it out of the name list. "Teachers can find out who doesn't hand in homework by using a phone APP." Zhang Xirui said.

The robot is the second-generation (第二代) model made by Zhang. Now, he's planning to make a third-generation robot and hopes it can read lots of RFID tags from far away. That means if there is a special tag on your notebook, the robot can quickly read the information of the notebooks. Zhang believes AI is the key to make life easier for us.

China's actress Dilraba's fantastic dance performance in Croatia (克罗地亚) attracted viewers both at home and abroad. Through her, the world can see the shining confidence of young Chinese people as well as the beautiful Chinese culture.

Dilraba travelled to Croatia with a reality show "Divas Hit the Road". When the host asked her to describe the dress that she was wearing, Dilraba said it is a beautiful Etles dress from Xinjiang, China. Etles silk, is regarded as the cultural mixture between China and the neighboring countries.

The video which shows Dilraba performing Xinjiang dance has been widely spread online. And it was reposted by many Chinese diplomats (外交官) and got many likes abroad. "Dilraba, wearing Chinese Xinjiang clothing and dancing Xinjiang dance," Wang Wenbin, a spokesman from the Chinese Foreign Ministry wrote while reposting the video on social media.

Earlier, the reality show took Dilraba along with a number of guests to Saudi Arabia (沙特阿拉伯).

Shanya Gill is a 13-year-old girl from California, US. In April, 2024, she got a special invitation (邀请).

She went to a US fire office to talk about fire safety. Gill made a new fire detector (探测器) and won first place at a science event in 2023.

One day, the restaurant behind Gill's house was on fire when she was in Grade 6. No one died, but some people got hurt badly. That made Gill and her family feel afraid. Gill thought it was because the restaurant's fire detectors were not good enough. So she wanted to make a better one.

After learning how to program (编程), Gill made a fire detector. It can find hot things with 97% accuracy

(准确度) and tell people about them. The accuracy of other fire detectors are only about 82% to 94%.

Gill doesn't want to make money from her fire detector. She hopes everyone can use it to save lives and buildings.
