When you are in Britain, you should know the rules for eye contact. In dealing with strangers, the rule for British society is that you must not stare at them but at the same time you cannot take no notice of them. Passing strangers in the street, you may look at the strangers until they are about eight feet away. Then your eyes must turn away as they pass. Generally speaking, strangers feel comfortable looking at one another at a distance. The closer they are, the greater the tendency to avoid eye contact. This can be observed in a crowded lift where strangers' glances fly from one spot to another.
However, British need eye contact when communicating. There is a saying in English,"Don't trust anyone who won't look at you in the eye. " Not looking at the person could mean a number of things, including fear, contempt, uneasiness, guilt or indifference. This is not to say that people talking to one another will look directly into one another's eyes all the time. British people normally look at the other person's eyes much longer when they are listening than when speaking. When they are about to stop speaking and start listening, they look at the other person's eyes to signal that they are about to change role.
Staring at people is rude in Britain and young children will be scolded by their parents if they look too long at others. Many British people traveling to some countries find being looked at very uncomfortable.
So, dear friends, when in Britain, you should know when you should look at others and when you shouldn't.

Mobile phones can take your attention away when you' re trying to focus on something. That's why the Dutch government is banning them in classrooms, at least.
The government has announced that from January 1st, 2024, students will not be allowed to use their mobile phones in classrooms, unless they are needed for medical reasons.
Robbert is the education minister of the Netherlands. ▲He said that although mobile phones are a big part of our lives, there is no need to have them in the classroom. "Students need to be able to concentrate and need to be given the chance to study well. Mobile phones are a disturbance, scientific research shows. We need to protect students against this," he said.
The ban has come about through an agreement between the government education department, schools, and relevant organizations. At first, it will be left up to schools how they enforce. If the ban doesn't work, legislation and binding rules may be introduced before the summer of 2024.
★"We are going to look very closely at whether this decision works," Robbert said. "Of course, there could always be a legal ban. But I actually believe that we can arrange this together. "
The move follows similar steps taken recently in Finland, a country that is widely regarded as having one of the best education systems in the world and which is also the birthplace of one of the most important companies in the development of mobile phones.
The Netherlands is not the first country to introduce a ban like this. In 2022, Italy took similar steps. France has also had a ban in place since September 2018. France bans mobile phones from schools for children between 3 and 15 years of age, and China introduced a similar ban in 2021.
