Sign language is the main way for deaf people to communicate. Since they can't hear, talking to hearing people can be hard. Luckily, sign language translators are there to help.

Hao Shuxin, 25, sees sign language as her first language. "I picked up sign language before I could even talk, as my parents are deaf." she recalled. In 2018, she became a sign language translator at a law firm (律所) in Chongqing. Her work needs her to translate for deaf people.

Hao sometimes feels stressed at work because accuracy (准确性) is important in translation for law firms. So she always explains things earnestly. Her stress also comes from the fact that sign language has "dialects (方言)". The same word can be expressed with different hand gestures depending on where a deaf person is from. There are also differences in grammar between Chinese and sign language.

Having traveled to over 30 cities in China because of the job, she has learned about the special ways deaf people across the country use sign language.

In her spare time, Hao reads many law books and talks with her deaf coworkers to improve herself. "My parents are deaf, so I understand the difficulties faced by the deaf community. I want to do everything I can to help them." Hao said.

①What do you want to be when you grow up? A study shows that more than 80% of children choose jobs they often see around them, like doctors and teachers—with teachers topping the list of kids' dream jobs. But jobs such as cartoonists appear in less than 7% of their answers. We often overlook (忽视) jobs hidden outside our daily lives.

②Choosing a career is crucial because it will be a big part of your life. If you don't enjoy your job, your life won't be as happy as you wish it to be. Try looking into different possibilities! Your dream job might be something you've never heard of before.

③How can you start? First, think about your interests and strengths(优势). This will help shape (塑造) your future job. If numbers excite you, maybe you can be a scientist. If storytelling comes naturally, then writing or film-making could be your choice. And remember to talk to your parents, teachers and friends. They can share ideas about different jobs.

④Also, think about future trends (趋势). Many jobs today, like web developers, weren't around 50 years ago. New jobs like AI ethics advisors (伦理顾问) might appear when you grow up. As a result, besides learning subjects, you should also try to improve your creativity and critical (批判的) thinking.

⑤You don't have to wait to plan. Join clubs, read books or watch videos about different jobs. Remember: big dreams start with small actions. Whether you want to change the world or find happiness, planning today will help you achieve your dreams tomorrow.

Right now you probably spend most of your time at school. Do you wonder what you are going to do after high school? Will you go to university? Will you go to work? Maybe it is time to think about your jobs and to prepare (准备) for them. Someday work will be a big part of your life.

What kind of job would be right for you in the future? Think about your interests and skills (兴趣和技能). You may like to listen to music, dance, play basketball, or work with computers. You may know how to cook a delicious meal or how to get along with people. Knowing both your interests and skills will help you make a better plan for your future job.

Laura, an art designer (设计师), enjoys her work because she can use her interests and skills in her work. She enjoyed imagining something in her mind when she was at school. She took art design and computer lessons and also learned about taking photos on her own.

Here is what she says about the meaning of work: "If you have a job you like, work means much more than just making money. It means using your talents, making a contribution (贡献), and getting a real sense of satisfaction (满足感) from doing a job."

Mr Swales wanted to find out what his students' parents did. He had just called Jodie when some girls 1 . Shirley, one of the students, shouted, "Jodie's daddy is a garbage (垃圾) man!"
