Bill Gates is head of the software company Microsoft and one of the world's richest men. He was born on October 28, 1955 and grew up in Seattle with his two sisters. He was a very bright boy. Science and maths were his two favourite subjects at school. And he dreamed of being a scientist. 

Bill first started to play on computers at the age of 13. At that time, a computer was a very large machine. Once he was interested in a very old computer. He and some of his friends spent as much time as possible on computers. In the end, they worked out a software program. Bill sold it for 4,200 dollars when he was only 17. 

In 1973, Bill went to Harvard University. In 1975, Bill and his partners developed a software program called BASIC. This was not the first program ever created, but its inventors were the first to decide that people who wanted to use it should pay for it. BASIC was a success. Then Bill left Harvard to work for Microsoft, a company he started in 1975 with his boyhood friend Paul Allen. They thought the computer would come into every office and every home soon. So they began developing software for personal computers. They improved the software to make it easier for people to use computers. After many years of hard work, Microsoft became one of the most successful companies. And Bill Gates also became one of the richest businessmen in the world. 

Yuan Longping was born on September 7, 1930. After  (graduate) from the Southwest Agriculture Institute, he worked as a teacher at an agriculture school in Hunan. About 50 years ago, some natural disasters  (hit) China. Yuan saw many people lose their lives because of hunger every day. Since , he has done some research  how to grow good-quality rice. In 1964, he found a  (nature) hybrid rice plant by accident. It had great advantages over others. Yuan was excited about what he  (discover). He then decided to study this particular plant. In 1973, he started to grow a type of hybrid rice. It  (produce) 20% more rice each unit than common ones. The next year he had a great success. This progress made China the world's  (lead) in rice production. In China, most rice fields grow Yuan's hybrid rice. He is  (call) the "Father of Hybrid Rice". During his lifetime he has a dream. He hopes hybrid rice will grow as tall  Chinese sorghum (高粱) one day!

Nelson Mandela (曼德拉) was the former president of South Africa. He was one of the world's greatest  . In 1993, he won the  Peace Prize. 

Mandela was  in a small village in Transkei in South Africa on 18 July, 1918. When he was 9, his father died of . He had a difficult time when he was young. He was in prison (监狱) for 27 years, because he led the anti-apartheid movement (反种族隔离运动). He was  to leave the prison in 1990. Mandela was free. Then in 1994 he became president of South Africa. 

Even in the worst  in prison, Mandela didn't  himself up. He did exercise every day, and planted many vegetables. He loved his country and devoted all his  to it. People chose him  the greatest South African in 2004. He also did a lot for the peace of the world. Mandela  away in Johannesburg last year, at the age of 95.

Who is the old man? I believe you must know him very well without me saying anything. . Yes, he is Yuan Longping, a famous farmer and scientist. People call him the "Father of Hybrid Rice". But the farmers call him "Rice Bodhisattva(米菩萨)". Some people even think that his achievement is as important as the "Four Great Inventions" in ancient China. Someone said his name was worth more than 100 billion yuan. 

Many people think Chinese people hate the rich, . But a lot of people support Yuan Longping. More and more people hate Wang Shi who only gave out ten yuan at the Sichuan earthquake, but many speak highly of Yuan Longping. No people will hate such a great scientist. He is a real hero to the farmers. When we asked him how he felt that some people on the Internet called him "the scientist of people"， the old man said, "I am not fit for it. I am only a science worker. . " "What is your dream next？" the reporter asked. The old man said, "I want to make rice as tall as sorghum(高粱), ^,each rice as big as a peanut. I want to plant my rice in Taiwan. " . "We must keep our body, spirit, emotions healthy. We must not only have rich knowledge but also have good thoughts，" he said. 

Christmas Eve means a warm get-together with friends, a candlelight dinner, or perhaps a celebration at a pub (酒馆) for students. But, for Cai Yingjie, the night has a different meaning: helping beggars (乞丐) and the homeless(people without homes).  

Cai, who is a student in journalism at Tsinghua, could be found at Beijing's Wudaokou Light Railway Station that special evening. When she saw an old beggar, she took the cold, rough hands of the woman with her warm, clean hands, and gave the woman some warm bread and helped her put on a pair of new gloves (手套). The woman was surprised for a few seconds, then burst into tears, saying "for the first time I feel respected (尊重)". Cai said, "A beggar's life is very hard. That's why I want to help them. " Cai was one of 14 Tsinghua students spending Christmas Eve among the poor. They walked in the cold wind along the streets from 4 to 7 pm on Friday,visiting 15 beggars in Beijing's Haidian District. They brought bread and gloves with them, and stopped to greet beggars and offer them some of the warm food. Each beggar greeted them with a look of surprise.  "I know the activity can't help much, but it's meant to show our respect and care for beggars and the homeless who have been neglected for so long," said Sun, head of the group. "And Christmas is a good time for that. "
