How to Ask Questions in English

A good conversation happens when two people ask the right questions and then give proper answers. Let's take a look at four different kinds of questions that will improve your English conversation skills.

Number One: The Open-ended Question

An open-ended question is a question that cannot be answered with "yes" or "no". An open-ended question allows you to learn more information.

Number Two: The Follow-up Question

A follow-up question is something that is done to continue. When it comes to conversations, a follow-up question depends on what the other person has already said. You need to listen to the person's answer to your first question in order to ask a good follow-up question. Follow-up questions keep the conversation moving.

Number Three: The Clarifying (澄清的) Question

You need to ask a clarifying question in two situations. The first one: when you don't hear the information clearly. The second one: when you are having trouble understanding what the other person is saying.

Number Four: The Superlative(最高级的) Question

Examples of these types of adjectives are "best" "worst" "least" and "most". Superlative questions use these words and are great conversation starters. Questions like, "What is the best trip you've ever taken?" or "Which place in your hometown is the most beautiful?" really help you learn more about the person you're having a conversation with.

When you are in a new place or trying to find your way around, it's important to know how to ask for directions. It can help you get to your destination faster and avoid getting lost. However, many ESL (English as a Second Language) learners may find it quite challenging to ask for directions in English. Don't worry. This passage will help.

The first and most important step is to start the conversation politely. When you ask for directions, the way you make your request can make a difference to the reply you receive. Using polite expressions shows respect for the person you're asking. This makes him/her more likely (可能的) to help you. If possible, put on a smile.

 Once you've started the conversation, you'd better ask for directions by using simple sentences. Here are some English expressions for you to ask for directions. Combining (结合) them with a friendly attitude will increase your chances of receiving helpful directions.

Telling someone to move out of the way is very impolite. When someone is in your way, you should say, "Excuse me." 

 "I'm afraid I can't." VS "No."

It can often be a little difficult to decline an invitation from a friend or other people. Saying "No" would be impolite. If you have to say no to an invitation, you'd better say, "I'm afraid I can't." 

 "Would you mind..." VS "Stop it!"

If someone is doing something very rude (无礼的), would you like him or her to stop? You shouldn't say, "Stop talking on the phone in the cinema!" You can say, "Would you mind not talking on the phone in the cinema, please?"

We all know that the British people love their manners (礼仪). They are part of their national identity (特性), as well as having fish and chips and complaining about the weather. Recently I read online that they say "sorry" up to eight times a day.

After some research I have not been able to find any specific reasons why they are like this. I suppose, for centuries, manners, including how they behave at the table and talk to other people have been one of the differences between the lower and upper classes and those manners show their social classes. Britain has traditionally been a quite conservative (保守的) country. There are many articles suggesting that their seemingly polite attitude of always saying "please" and "thank you" is quite false because it is impossible for a person to always feel that he or she wants to thank someone or say "please".

Maybe it is for this reason that people are going one of two ways: they are too polite and hold back their feelings or they are not polite at all and express their true feelings directly. Some British people are tired of pretending (假装) that they are always happy and having to please others. But sometimes because they feel they have to be polite, they are prevented from saying what they truly think.

Remember to use "please"  "thank you" when asking for help. It's not only polite but also  for others to help you.
