In yesterday's English class, we talked about whether kids should do housework at home. 

Helping others is easier than you think. You don't need to wait to become a rich man like Bill Gates to help the poor. You can become a volunteer. And by doing so, you can become a better and happier person. 

For example, homeless people who sleep in the cold, poor children who have no parents to take care of and can't go to school. All of these are OK. 

Decide what you are able to give.

Sometimes it isn't only money, you can give up several hours each week as a volunteer, you can help teach the poor children, or you can share a meal with a hungry child. 

Tell your friends or your children about your volunteer work. Put it in your blog or on your website. In this way, the good work you do will be added（增加）！

Because you're a volunteer, you must be ready to help others for being a volunteer. Once you decide to do something, you should never give up!

You should be ready to help people when they are in need of help. Let them know that you're free if they need you. Showing up on time is important as a good volunteer.

There once was a little weed（野草）in a field. All around it stood tall, beautiful flowers. The children liked to play in the field all year round. One fine day, three sisters came to play. They were laughing and chatting with each other. 

"Let's pick some flowers for Grandma!" said one. 

"That's a good idea!" said another. "She will love all these bright and beautiful ones!"

The children began picking flowers and soon, almost all the flowers in the field were in their hands. 

"What about that one?" the youngest child said, pointing at the weed. 

"Forget it!" laughed the oldest one. "That's just a useless weed!"

Hearing this made the weed feel upset. "Am I really useless?" it asked itself. "Why was I even put on this Earth?" With all the nearby flowers gone, the little weed was alone. Even though it had felt envious（嫉妒的）of the tall flowers, it liked being around them. 

The winds of autumn blew over the field, and very soon came the snows of winter. Just then, the weed noticed some birds flying high above the field. "We are hungry!" they cried. "Where can we find food to eat?"

The wild weed felt sorry for the poor birds and called out to them, "Hey! Down here! I have tasty seeds that you can eat!" "You are so kind!" the birds said as they enjoyed the seeds. "They are delicious——and will keep us full for a long time!"

What they said made the little weed feel touched. It was glad to help its new friends. "At last, I have found out what I am good for!" the weed thought. "Next year, I will make twice as many seeds, so I can feed more hungry birds that need food!"

The weed looked forward to telling the tall flowers all about its new friends when they grew back in the spring. Now, it feels great to be a little weed!

Have you ever thought of what life is like for old people? Have you ever helped old people who live alone? Can they get help when they need it?

Six students from Beijing 101 Middle School looked deeper at this question and wrote a proposal（提案）to the China Youth Model Chinese People' s Political Consultative Conference（全国青少年模拟政协）. They advised to build more old people's service stations in the neighborhood. They also gave advice about how governments, neighborhoods and hospitals can work together to make this happen. 

An old people's service station is different from a nursing home. It offers things like daytime care, cooking, cleaning and friendship to old people who live in their own homes. The students surveyed more than 1, 100 people, and about 90 percent of them said they would prefer（更喜欢）using the stations' services to moving into a nursing home. However, there are not enough of these stations, and many are not run very well. 

The six students came up with a solution after reading more than 60 surveys, interviewing 108people and visiting 25 different organizations. Their proposal beat out almost 100 others to win the Best Proposal award（奖项）in 2021. 

"This experience helps me to better understand the importance of caring old people. Also I see the light and abilities in us, " said Xu Wanqing, one of the students. 

"Taking part in the China Youth Model CPPCC has been good for students, " agreed their teacher Li Jie. "They' ve developed a sense of caring old people, as well as got more confidence（自信） about themselves since they' ve seen how much they can do for others. "

When Sammi e Vance was eight, she learned about Buddy Benches from a video. The video showed how these benches（长凳）are used on playgrounds. "If somebody is lonely, they can sit on the bench then, " Sammie explained. "Another person can come up to them and ask them to play. "

Sammie thought her school could have a Buddy Bench, so she and her mom set up a meeting with the headmaster. They learned of a local company, Green Tree Plastics, that recycles（回收利用）plastic bottles into benches. 

Sammie liked the idea of a Ruddy Bench that would help kids and the environment. Her headmaster liked it, too. Then Sammi e created a comic（漫画）that showed how a Buddy Bench works. She and her mom posted it on the social media to ask friends and family to save bottles. They also took the drawing to local businesses to ask for their help. 

In just two months, the project collected more than 1, 200 bottles——enough to make three Buddy Benches! After reaching her goal, Sammie set a new one——Buddy Bench everywhere. So far, she has collected enough bottles to give 100 benches to schools and organizations in 12 states. She continued to collect bottles to share with kids working toward their own Buddy Benches. And she has made videos to ask others to start their projects. 

These days, visiting museums is getting more and more popular. Now some students share their favorite ones in Hangzhou. Here are different opinions.
