Hongbao in China

While Western kids dream about what Santa will bring them, Chinese kids will be getting their money box ready to receive hongbao. Hongbao, red envelopes, are the traditional gifts that adults give children during the Chinese New Year holiday period. The general idea is that adults with income give children with no income hongbao during Chinese New Year.

You'll see hongbao used as decorations (装饰) on just about every Chinese New Year flower and plant that is displayed during the season. And they are only used for decoration. I know because my son checks them whenever he can reach them.

Weddings (婚礼) are big events where hongbao are given by guests invited to the wedding instead of gifts. The amount of money to give at a wedding can be tricky (微妙的) and if you are invited to a Chinese wedding, you can ask for some advice about how much to give.

If you need hongbao, you can buy them at shops at any time of the year. So you ensure you don't get one that says "Congratulations on your marriage" for a birthday.

These days, people don't even have to leave the comfort of their sofas to give hongbao. Wechat, a popular instant message and photo sharing app, introduced electronic hongbao, so now it's even easier.

Zoos help to save animals that are in danger of disappearing because of climate (气候) change. Robert Young, an expert on protecting animals, says that zoos are important because they keep many animals from going extinct. Some zoos have special programs to help animals have babies so they don't die out.

Although people still talk about whether having zoos is good or not, there are new ways to learn about wild animals. For example, we can use the VR (虚拟现实) technology. Many zoo experts believe it will be possible to walk through a group of elephants in the Serengeti very soon.

Su Shi was born into a well-known family in Meishan, Sichuan province. His father and brother were both great poets. Su Shi showed great talent from a young age and was known for his skills in handwriting and painting. At the age of 20, Su Shi successfully passed the imperial (科举)examination and began his official career(政治生涯). Throughout his life, Su held a number of different government positions across China. However, his different opinions often got him into trouble because of disagreements. at court, he was exiled (流放 ) three times. In 1079. Su Shi was even sent to prison. Although he got out of prison at last, he was placed under strict control for the rest of his life.

Though he met a lot of difficulties. Su Shi's literary(文学)talent continued to shine, and he produced a great number of poetic works during his lifetime. In 1080, he was exiled to Huangzhou. During his exile, he found peace in nature and produced some of his best works. The famous poem, "Red Cliff" was one of them. Su Shi's talent was beyond poetry, as he was also a great prose writer. His article "On the Love of the Lotus "shows his love for the beauty of the flower. In addition, his collection of short stories, shows his humour and wisdom.

It was not. only in the literary field that Su. Shi was highly praised. As an official, he won the love and support of the people. During his services, he did a lot for the people. In 1077-he protected the city from a terrible flood. The people in Xuzhou were thankful to him and gave him some food as presents.

Although Su Shi's life was filled with both achievements and troubles, he is remembered as one of the greatest people in Chinese history, and his creative genius and strong spirit continue to influence and guide people around China.

Jill loved to write. She dreamed of being a writer one day. And she knew she had to spend a lot of time practising alone in her room. She wrote in her diary every day, and she wrote at least one story a week. But she was having a lot of trouble with her new story this week.

Huang Yongyu, one of (China) most productive and best-known artists in the second half of the 20th century, died June 13, 2023. He was 99.

Huang (take) as a legendary figure (传奇人物) in Chinese art and design. Self-taught to paint and write, his works included woodcuts, ink painting, literature and designing stamps.

Huang's artistic (able) came from his never giving up, self-learning and experiences taking on different jobs in his early years as well as traveling.

From Fenghuang, Hunan province, and being a member of the Tujia ethnic group, Huang dropped out of school because of money troubles. At age 14, he left his hometown and traveled across the country (make) a living.

He worked at ceramic (陶瓷) workshops, (teach) at primary schools, designed theater props (道具) and made art for magazines. These jobs got him money and let him develop his skills for his future career as artist.

His gift and hard work won him recognition (认可) from Xu Beihong. invited Huang to be a professor (教授) at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in the early 1950s.

Huang became famous his Chinese New Year stamps, including the "Golden Monkey", and the Year of the Rabbit stamps. In January 2023, he once again showed his creativity by designing a blue rabbit zodiac (生肖) stamp.

Huang once said, "I (achieve) little so far. I didn't receive much education, but I dare not live a life without an aim or in laziness."

There are many ways to describe being a "strong" person. Some common traits include honesty, loyalty and a good work ethic (道德).

Gain more self-control.

You can develop your self-control by making small changes to your daily life.

When you're about to reach for a late night snack, stop and ask yourself if you're actually hungry. Then drink a big glass of water instead. You can consciously think about controlling your impulses (冲动).

Living with integrity (正直诚实) means that you're being true to the person you are inside. If your actions don't match your beliefs, then you will always feel unsettled inside. Know and honor your personal values and morals in your everyday life. Make your decisions based on these values, and don't bend to peer pressure.

Take responsibility for your mistakes and make things right.

Everyone makes mistakes, but how you handle them shows your character. Be honest when you've messed up, and do what you can to make amends for your actions. Other times, you may need to change your behavior or take action to make up for what you did.

Put yourself in someone else's shoes.

If you can become more empathetic (体恤别人感受的), you'll be able to better understand other people. For example, maybe your friend recently failed an exam. Think about how that might feel and how you would react. Try to think about what you could do to make your friend feel better.

On Oct.24, 2023, the team put a BMI chip (芯片) in the patient's head. The chip can receive neural signals from the brain. After three months of home recovery training, the patient can now use his brain signals to control a special glove powered by air pressure. This helps him do things like drinking water independently.

BMI technology usually means putting chips directly onto the patient's brain. However, this project is minimally invasive (微创的), making sure the patient's brain is not harmed. So it is an important breakthrough. It also uses a wireless power supply (无线电源), so the implanted (植入的) device doesn't need a battery.

In China, BMI technology is still in the early stages of research, with no products on the market yet. Some people are worried that tests may influence patients' independence and even who they are. Get organized.

Managing your time can help you study better and more wisely. Make a weekly schedule and devote a certain amount of time to study per day. The amount of time you spend is entirely up to you—even 30 minutes a day can make a difference.

Minimize distractions.

Silencing your phone and turning off the TV keeps you focused. The constant ping of a phone or background noise from a TV may not seem like a distraction (使人分心的事) , but they can keep your mind in 2 places at once. If you're worried about texting a fiend, you're not focused on studying.

Take good notes in class.

Being smart about your note-taking can help you study better. When in class, make sure you take the best notes you can. Catch all the important information, writing down what the teacher says or emphasizes (even if it's not in the textbook). Not only do detailed notes help you study later, but they also help you stay alert and focused during the lesson.
