8、Do you remember the name of your kindergarten (幼儿园) teacher? I do. Her name was Mrs White. And I remember I thought she must be a sister of Snow White, because she had the same bright blue eyes, short dark hair and fair skin1 Snow White.
I don't remember much about what I2 in her class. My mother once told me that I used to3 a lot. I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it. There were so many4, but no red corrections (改正), and always a star. Sometimes even a "Good" would make my heart full of5. One day, my mother went to6 Mrs White for one of the parent-teacher activities. Then she asked Mrs White7 she never corrected my mistakes in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical mistakes.
"The children just8 to get excited about using words and making sentences. I don't want my students to lose9 because of red ink (墨水). Spelling and10 can wait, but the wonder of words won't..." MrsWhite said.
I can remember the time of learning in kindergarten was so happy for me. As I grow up, I11 wonder many things and love my life. I look back now and think Mrs White must be such a(n)12 teacher that uses as less red pen as possible.
I used to misspell (拼错) "beautiful" a lot, and could never remember that the "e" goes before the "a". It made my teacher in the high school13. She asked me to use"pretty"instead when I was writing. I didn't listen to her. In my eyes, "pretty" is14 to spell, but it doesn't hold as much as we mean sometimes.
Thanks to Mrs White, I have never15 writing what I mean even if I couldn't quite spell it out. Because life isn't "pretty", it's "beautiful".

Hongbao in China
While Western kids dream about what Santa will bring them, Chinese kids will be getting their money box ready to receive hongbao. Hongbao, red envelopes, are the traditional gifts that adults give children during the Chinese New Year holiday period. The general idea is that adults with income give children with no income hongbao during Chinese New Year.
You'll see hongbao used as decorations (装饰) on just about every Chinese New Year flower and plant that is displayed during the season. And they are only used for decoration. I know because my son checks them whenever he can reach them.
Weddings (婚礼) are big events where hongbao are given by guests invited to the wedding instead of gifts. The amount of money to give at a wedding can be tricky (微妙的) and if you are invited to a Chinese wedding, you can ask for some advice about how much to give.
If you need hongbao, you can buy them at shops at any time of the year. So you ensure you don't get one that says "Congratulations on your marriage" for a birthday.
These days, people don't even have to leave the comfort of their sofas to give hongbao. Wechat, a popular instant message and photo sharing app, introduced electronic hongbao, so now it's even easier.
A. These will be empty.
B. It is necessary to buy fancy ones.
C. Hongbao are given at other occasions too.
D. Ask the shop owner or a friend which one to buy.
E. Friends send each other hongbao from their phones!
F. In fact, "children" can even mean young adults who are unmarried.

10、Many people's closest experience with wild animals is at the zoo. It's a place where we can see and learn about animals. It's really fun and educational for us. However, is it the best place for animals to live in?
In the past, people could only see dead animals in museums. But later, animals were caught alive by explorers (探险家). They put them in small zoos called menageries and showed them to the public. Back then, people didn't care much about how animals were treated.
But now, zoos and wildlife parks have changed a lot. People try to make zoos more like their natural homes. They build bigger places, and try to make the environment as close to the nature as possible.
Some people think it's not right to keep animals in zoos just for our entertainment (娱乐). But zoos say they are trying to help animals by teaching us about protecting them. And now, zoos that are run well also help to support and pay for programs that protect animals.
Zoos help to save animals that are in danger of disappearing because of climate (气候) change. Robert Young, an expert on protecting animals, says that zoos are important because they keep many animals from going extinct. Some zoos have special programs to help animals have babies so they don't die out.
Although people still talk about whether having zoos is good or not, there are new ways to learn about wild animals. For example, we can use the VR (虚拟现实) technology. Many zoo experts believe it will be possible to walk through a group of elephants in the Serengeti very soon.

There are many ways to describe being a "strong" person. Some common traits include honesty, loyalty and a good work ethic (道德).
Gain more self-control.
You can develop your self-control by making small changes to your daily life.
When you're about to reach for a late night snack, stop and ask yourself if you're actually hungry. Then drink a big glass of water instead. You can consciously think about controlling your impulses (冲动).
Living with integrity (正直诚实) means that you're being true to the person you are inside. If your actions don't match your beliefs, then you will always feel unsettled inside. Know and honor your personal values and morals in your everyday life. Make your decisions based on these values, and don't bend to peer pressure.
Take responsibility for your mistakes and make things right.
Everyone makes mistakes, but how you handle them shows your character. Be honest when you've messed up, and do what you can to make amends for your actions. Other times, you may need to change your behavior or take action to make up for what you did.
Put yourself in someone else's shoes.
If you can become more empathetic (体恤别人感受的), you'll be able to better understand other people. For example, maybe your friend recently failed an exam. Think about how that might feel and how you would react. Try to think about what you could do to make your friend feel better.

18、It might sound like magic, but in February, a paralyzed (瘫痪的) patient was able to drink water on his own by controlling a special glove with his brain. The glove then acted as his hand. This was a success in brain-machine interface (BMI,脑机接口) technology made by a team of Chinese scientists and doctors.
BMI refers to creating a connection between the human brain and external devices (外部设备), making communication between the brain and computers. For paralyzed people, BMI can allow them to move and do simple things by themselves.
On Oct.24, 2023, the team put a BMI chip (芯片) in the patient's head. The chip can receive neural signals from the brain. After three months of home recovery training, the patient can now use his brain signals to control a special glove powered by air pressure. This helps him do things like drinking water independently.
BMI technology usually means putting chips directly onto the patient's brain. However, this project is minimally invasive (微创的), making sure the patient's brain is not harmed. So it is an important breakthrough. It also uses a wireless power supply (无线电源), so the implanted (植入的) device doesn't need a battery.
In China, BMI technology is still in the early stages of research, with no products on the market yet. Some people are worried that tests may influence patients' independence and even who they are. Ethical concerns (伦理问题) related to BMI also need to be addressed. These include whether the patient has a clear understanding of what is going on when they agree to take part in the test.
(1)、What does the term "brain-machine interface" refer to in the context of the text?A、Connecting the human brain to external devices. B、Creating a connection between two brains. C、Making communication between computers and machines. D、Enhancing brain power through technology.(2)、How did the paralyzed patient in the text control the special glove to drink water?A、By using his hands. B、By speaking commands. C、By controlling it with his brain signals. D、By pressing buttons on the glove.(3)、Which of the following word can replace the underlined word "breakthrough" in Paragraph 4?A、experiment B、creation C、mistake D、achievement(4)、Why is the BMI technology mentioned in the text considered minimally invasive?A、Because it uses wireless power supply. B、Because it does not require a battery. C、Because it does not harm the patient's brain. D、Because it connects directly to the patient's brain.(5)、What do we know from the last paragraph?A、Patients can buy products with BMI technology. B、BMI technology is still under development. C、Many people are against BMI technology. D、BMI technology is widely used in the medical field. -
