In China the twelfth month of the lunar calendar (阴历) is called Layue. The month is  of interesting festivals and customs.

Laba Festival, which falls on the  day of Layue, is the first festival in this month. From this day on, people  to get ready for the Chinese New Year.

On Laba Festival, people often eat hot Laba porridge. There are  eight things in the porridge: rice, red beans, peas, dried lotus seeds (莲子), dates (红枣), and three different  of fruits and nuts. The porridge is not just good for your health, but best wishes for the coming of the Chinese New Year.

Laba porridge is not the only tasty food in Layue. Laba garlic (蒜) is  in the north. People begin to soak (浸泡) garlic in vinegar (醋) from that day on, and have it with dumplings during the Chinese New Year.  in the south, people like making sausages.

 major celebration before the Spring Festival is Xiaonian. It is usually on the twenty-third day of the last lunar month. Traditionally, it is an important day when people  sacrifices to the Kitchen God who looks after the family.

Don't forget to clean your home. This is also an important thing to do to prepare for the Chinese New Year. It  sweeping away the dust of the old year and welcoming a fresh start. Now, the last thing for you to do is to wait for the coming Spring Festival.

Issac Newton was a quiet boy. Having lost his father before he was born, he grew up with his grandparents. At 17, soon after he finished schooling, his mother decided that he would be trained to take care of their family farm. But instead of watching sheep, young Newton would spend his time making small tools. His head teacher saw the genius in him and asked his mother to send him to the university. Newton set out for Cambridge in June, 1661, and began his career in scientific research.

Newton was always trying to understand and explain a lot of things in nature. To test a question about colors, he would stare at(凝视) the sun with one eye until all the colors changed. As a result, he had to stay in the dark for several days before his eye returned to normal. Newton was the first to show us that white light is made up of colors mixed together. He was also the first person to understand the rainbow and explain how it forms.

A story goes like this: One day, an apple fell on Newton's head, and it was then that Newton realized that the apple fell towards the Earth and didn't go anywhere else. He thought to himself, "How did this happen?" After doing some experiments, he later knew all objects(物体)always fall towards the Earth's center because the Earth attracts them. He realized that every object in the universe attracts every other object towards it. Then Newton discovered the law of universal gravitation.

Newton was an English physicist, mathematician and astronomer. Because of the significant work Newton has done, he is widely considered as one of the greatest scientists of all time.

In Xi'an, there are special sidewalks for the phubbers (低头族). Different students have different opinions on it.  

Florence Nightingale was a nurse who saved many lives in the 19th century. She was named after the city of Florence in Italy. Her family was 1 and they had two houses in Britain as well as many servants. 

Florence was an 2 young woman during her time. She was different from other women. Wealthy women like Florence weren't expected to work—their job was to marry and 3 the family. But Florence wanted to be a nurse and help people. Her family didn't allow her to do that 4 they thought hospitals were dirty places. They 5 her health. In 1851, Florence went to Germany and learned about nursing. It was hard work, but she loved it. 

In 1854, lots of British soldiers fought in the Crimean War. Army hospitals were filled with injured soldiers, but there were 6 nurses. For this reason, many soldiers 7 . Florence and a team of nurses volunteered to help them. 

Florence worked 20 hours a day to take care of the injured soldiers and clean the army hospital. At night, Florence walked around the hospital. She talked to the injured soldiers and helped them 8 to write letters to their families. She always carried a 9 and the soldiers called her "The Lady with the Lamp".

Imagine meeting a craftsman (工匠) in his eighties, who is carving dragons on copper hotpots (铜火锅). You feel like you've traveled back two thousand years. That's the charm of Shanxi in Sight, a six-episode (集) documentary that was on show in March 2025 on CCTV-2.

Filmed over six months, the series explores 50 historic places across Datong, Taiyuan, and Yuncheng. It follows nearly 100 local people—from craftsmen to shopkeepers. It shows a slow and thoughtful journey to the viewers.

Instead of filming old buildings as cold and empty places, the team tried to show them through the eyes of local people. "We didn't want the buildings to feel like museums," said director Zhou Lifen. "So we chose people living in Shanxi—shopkeepers, craftsmen, farmers—whose lives are closely connected to these old buildings. Their warmth brings history to life." In the documentary, viewers meet an artist in Datong who is making knife-cut noodles, a sculptor who has spent thirty years recreating cave figures (人物), and a craftsman who protects swans along the Yellow River.

"In today's cultural tourism documentaries need to do more than just tell—they need to make people think," said Zhou Lifen. Shanxi in Sight turns the province's popularity into lasting cultural pride and excitement for travel. When a documentary helps understand the past through the warmth of common people, it produces a strong feeling that's truly unforgettable. As one viewer wrote online, "This isn't just a travel show—it's a chance to feel history in daily life."

Fried duck doesn't taste as good as fried chicken

On the menus of fast food restaurants, there always seem to be many fried chicken dishes. But have you wondered why there is no fried duck?

 Ducks live in places where there is a lot of water, making it easier for bacteria to grow. To protect themselves from the bacteria, ducks have special genes (基因).  While chickens' meat usually has 6.7% fat (脂肪), duck meat has about 19.7%.  Also, as duck meat has thicker meat fibers (纤维) and less water, the frying process will make it taste very dry.

 Near the tail, there is a part that makes oil to keep them warm. This oil smells like sheep meat and can be unpleasant when the duck is fried.

On a Monday morning in Amsterdam, the work day began as usual for Jim. When finishing his coffee, Jim checked text messages on his phone. Then, he got his bag and went to the nearest railway station. He wasn't there to take the train, though. Instead, Jim chose one of the public bicycles lined up outside the station. After unlocking a bike with a smart card, he set out for his job on the other side of the city. He joined other cyclists in the bike lanes (道), safely separated from car traffic.

Amsterdam wasn't always bicycle friendly. In fact, cycling used to be dangerous, especially during the second half of the twentieth century. This was a time of rapid growth in Amsterdam. As people got richer, they were able to afford expensive goods such as cars. For the first time, driving became popular. Highways were built for cars. This meant there was less space for cyclists. Having had a long tradition of cycling, this was a big change for the city. As car traffic increased, so did the number of biking accidents. Many of the cyclists were children.

People in Amsterdam were angry. They organized protests (抗议) in the city streets. Government officers listened. Hoping to solve the problem quickly, they started to think of ways to make the city safe for cyclists again. Soon there were separate bike lanes, and some areas were closed to cars forever. The changes were so effective (有效的) that today Amsterdam is a model of biking safety for other cities around the world.

A cold front (冷锋) is moving towards the north of the country. It may cause snowfall in that area tomorrow. In the evening, the wind might get stronger. There's a strong chance that the snow will continue for a few days, so it's time to get out your thick coats and gloves!

Another cold front is moving south-west across the country. It should arrive on the west coast during the day tomorrow. If this happens, we might see some cold winds and rain reaching the western and southern parts late tomorrow afternoon. The rain may last till Sunday.

On the east coast, we could see a slight rise in temperature tomorrow, from today's high of 16℃ to as high as 18℃. But don't get too excited! I'm afraid the mild weather won't last very long. The cold weather may get to the east part on Sunday or next Monday.

Last Sunday was sunny and beautiful. All week long the Browns were looking forward to visiting the zoo. 1 , Mom and Dad both had colds. All the family had to stay at home.

"2 , kids," said Mom at breakfast. "I know this isn't the kind of day you wished for."

"It's OK," Peter said in a low voice.
