One day, a fisherman came to this pond. When he saw so many fish swimming around, he went back and told other fishermen to come as well.

Respected scholar Ye Jiaying, also known as "Poetry's Daughter," passed away  November 24, 2024, at the age of 100. Born in Beijing in 1924, Ye Jiaying was a leading expert in classical Chinese literature and poetry (诗歌). She  (spend) her life in creating, studying, and teaching the beautiful art of Chinese poetry. Even in her 90s, she continued to share her knowledge and passion with others, and her lectures were  (wide) admired.

From a young age, Ye had a deep  (interesting) in classical poetry and English. In college, she studied Tang and Song dynasty poetry with a famous literature professor  influenced her greatly. In the 1950s and 1960s, she taught at universities in Taiwan, and later moved to Canada. However, her love for her homeland and  (it) poetry never faded (消退). Starting in 1979, she began giving free lectures in mainland China during her holidays.

In 2018 and 2019, Ye gave all her savings and the money from selling her property, totaling 35.68 million yuan, to Nankai University. For her  (kind) and generosity (慷慨), she was awarded the "Touching China" award in 2020.

Ye was not just a teacher. She was  a talented poet and scholar. She wrote and published many books on Chinese poetry and literature,  (include) "Studies in Chinese Poetry" and "Gaijia's Collection of Poetry Commentaries"《迦陵诗词杂俎》. Her work was highly praised, and she received many awards, such as the Lifetime Achievement Award for Chinese Poetry.

When I was a grade 9 student, I often felt tired and stressful because of the busy schoolwork. Finally I lost my confidence and even hope in my study. Thanks to a famous writer whose words shine with the beauty of love and wisdom, I was saved from pain and hopelessness. Her name is Bi Shumin (毕淑敏).

When I was reading her books, I felt something special burning in my heart. When I was sad, she told me, "In an imperfect life, mud (泥土) and sand are actually the raw materials of life. You should learn to be strong." Lifting my head, I felt a power I couldn't name filled my heart. When I looked outside the window, birds were singing and everything looked so warm. Her soft but powerful words made me relaxed and finally I found my way out of sadness.

Bi not only saved me from pain but also told me something about life. In her books, she tells me to be true to myself. I need neither to please others nor to wrong myself. Her soft words have the power to help me stay positive (乐观的) towards life. Like the shining light, it leads me to a more beautiful and wonderful world.

Now I always stay in a book club, where I can talk about the books I have read with my classmates. I do enjoy reading so much and it really brightens my days.

China's FAST is the largest radio telescope in the world. It is as large as 30 soccer fields. It has received weak radio messages far away in space. Since April in 2021, China has opened it to the world. By sharing it with more scientists, the powerful tool will help human look deeper into the universe.

The idea of building the huge telescope was from the Chinese scientist, Nan Rendong.

He began working on the FAST project in 1994. He led a research team to work around the clock. The biggest and most important challenge was where to build the telescope. Nan and his team spent more than ten years climbing up and down the mountains to find the right place. Finally, they chose a quiet mountain valley (山谷). It's good for listening for weak signals. Then Nan began to work there most of his time. Life was quite hard in deep mountains, but he only cared about how to finish the project. With little experience, it was difficult to build such a huge telescope. With great effort and a strong will, he led his team to overcome all kinds of difficulties and finally completed the project in 2016.

From a strong middle-aged man to an elder, he devoted himself to the project.

Nan passed away at the age of 72. He lived simply all his lifetime. He never thought about his own gain or loss. He is the role model of our times. We should learn from him and connect our dream with the development of our country.
