1、Have you ever wondered what an American high school is really like?
A typical American high school has several large buildings and enough space for about 1,500 students. When students first arrive at school, they go straight to their lockers (寄存柜,有锁存物柜) to put away or get their textbooks and to hang up their outdoor clothes. As American textbooks are expensive, students would rather rent than buy them.
American students have different types of school transport. They usually take a yellow school bus or walk to school if they live close enough. When they turn 16 years of age, most take a free driving class at school for one term. If students earn passing grades in the class and also pass their state driver's exam, they can begin driving themselves to school.
They must take science, math, English and social studies. They can choose art, homemaking, fashion design and other classes. In some schools students are required to take one or more of the following special classes: health education, physical education or foreign language studies. Students move to different classrooms for each subject. This is because each teacher has their own classroom. There is a five-minute break between classes, to give the students the time to hurry to their next class.
The regular school day usually ends early in the afternoon. After school more than half of the students are involved in after-school activities. These activities include sports-especially football, basketball, baseball and soccer or clubs, such as yearbook, speech, school newspaper, photograph or student government.
A. Every student is given a locker.
B. Each day, students take six or seven classes.
C. Sometimes their parents drive them to school.
D. Students must pay back if they lost any of them.
E. Because each teacher has their own classroom.
F. In some schools students are required to take some special subjects.
G. This article will describe a typical American high school and its students.

2、I had just made a memorable speech, and I was about to learn how the judges decided my performance. The audience leaned forward and a period of silence fell across the room. I felt the drum rolled in my heart.
The third-place winner was announced. The name was not mine. Then the second-place winner, still not me. At last, the moment of truth came. I was about to either enjoy the warmth of victory or regret the months' preparation. My heart felt closer to the latter.
Losing is a part of life, and I have dealt with it on more than one occasion. However, it was an indescribable feeling to drive a 200-mile round trip, get up very early on a freezing Saturday morning, and yet still finish fourth out of four competitors in my group.
I had spent many hours in front of a computer and in libraries doing research for the Lincoln Bicentennial (200周年) Speech Contest. After not placing (获得名次) in the first year of the contest, I really wanted to compete again. Lincoln had many failures, but he never allowed them to defeat his spirit or ambition, so I was not going to give up on a second contest! I reworked my speech for the following year, but again I did not place.
I couldn't accept the fact that I failed twice in something that I had worked so hard on, until I thought about my hero. Never mind the lost prize money and praise—through learning stories about Lincoln, I discovered that I can fail successfully.

So was the fiveyearold girl in the bed beside me.We were both recovering from the same operation.Because I was older and wiser, I thought it was my job to look after her. "Do you want to hear a story?" I asked her one afternoon."Great!" she said.
It was so easy to make her happy. She seemed always to be smiling or singing songs.
Life wasn't fair. She passed away. My recovery went well. "You're really lucky",a nurse told me."But how come my operation was so easy and hers wasn't?" I asked."Easy?" my dad said. "David, your operation wasn't easy at all. We thought we were going to lose you. For two weeks after your operation, many things could go wrong. You're really lucky. When you were in the coma (昏迷) , she used to come over to your bed and sing to you. She was watching over you." my dad said.
My surgery scars (手术疤痕)are hidden under my shirt along with the memory of that kind little girl. She will be at my side like a small angel. I am old and wise enough now to know that I have an angel watching over me whenever life is fair or unfair.

4、Amsterdam is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museums, cycling culture and so on. It is the capital city of the Netherlands and often referred to as the "Venice of the North" because of its expansive system of bridges and canals. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You'll also want to check out Amsterdam's Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit there are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum.
If You Have Time
There are several other unique districts in Amsterdam, and you should try to explore as many of them as time allows. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a center for celebrity spotting and nightlife today. The Plantage area has most of the city's museums and the botanical gardens.
Money Saving Tips
●Unless you really want to see the tulips(郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May. This is when hotel and flight prices rise.
●Look for accommodations in Amsterdam's South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.
●Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
●Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They're inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.

5、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The Ice Cream Truck
"Never give up! Never give up!" chanted two young children, Max and Lily, as they marched barefoot behind their grandmother Mimi who was leading them on a great adventure, straight off the beach where they had spent the day building sand castles and swimming in the sea. They were seeking the mysterious ice-cream truck!
Over the years, Mimi had become an example of positivity for her family. It was not a title she earned without effort, however. Her husband died early and at only forty years old she was left to raise her daughter alone. She faced the heart-breaking disaster powerful enough. She could have lived under a black cloud. But she challenged herself to find joy every day instead. She was always up for a new challenge, whether that was hiking across the rocky mountain in Austria to get a better view of the breathtaking scenery, or signing up for tap-dancing classes at fifty. Leading by example, Mimi taught her daughter just how much one could achieve with a positive attitude.
And obviously she had taken the same approach in her relationship with her grandchildren as well. Before starting her adventure with Max and Lily on that hot July afternoon, Mimi heard the ice-cream man's bell from her beach chair. She turned and saw him briefly, spotting his green shirt and catching the sight of his waving bell before he turned and disappeared. The ice-cream man visited the beach on a daily basis, although the delay between the sound of his bell and the disappearance of his truck was not long. One must be quick to catch him.
Max and Lily were disappointed when they didn't catch him in time that day. That was until Mimi's eyes shone and she said, "Never give up!" She explained that the truck might be gone, but they could hurry up to find it at its next stop.
They walked block after block. Not knowing which direction the truck had taken, they had to make their best guess about where to search. The kids' tiny legs were tired, but they went on, continuing the chant, "Never give up! Never give up!"

9、Popular people are generally positive, helpful, and fun to be around. . Here are some general tips that will help you become a more likable and popular person:
● Avoid offering help in exchange for approval
Popular people often help others, but being helpful doesn't always make you more popular. Trying to be helpful just to make others like you will backfire (事与愿违). . You'll come across as needy, which isn't attractive.
●
The most popular people are often the ones who hold their friends together. Try to arrange parties and get - togethers where your friends can hang out together. You will also be considered as a more social person.
● Be easygoing
When you are easygoing, your friends will enjoy spending time with you, which may make you more popular. .
Sharing your problems with others is a good thing, but talking about your problems over and over again is annoying and your friends will keep away from you.
● Stop talking about people behind their backs
. When you speak negatively about other people, the person you're talking to can reasonably assume that you would speak negatively about them when they're not around. Even if you attempt to justify your unfriendly behavior by saying "I'm not talking behind anyone's back. I'm just telling the truth." While this may be the case, it is still not an acceptable excuse.
A. Be the glue in your social circle
B. These qualities draw others towards them
C. It's unpopular to talk back when friends are around
D. People who often complain about life have fewer friends
E. It's important to have a positive attitude and avoid constant complaining
F. They will know that you need friendship or approval from them in return
G. Popular people know that talking behind people's backs will cause them to lose friends

10、Between at least 1995 and 2010, I was seen as a crazy man for talking about the "Internet prophecy (预言)." Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a novelty — I even believe it may have existed in its fullness in a very distant and forgotten past! Nevertheless, it is now the topic of the moment.
Although the term "Artificial Intelligence" wascoinedin 1956, its origin began in ancient times with stories of artificial beings with intelligence. Since ancient times, humans have been crazy about building artifacts that could copy human intelligence. For example, in Ancient Greece, there are references to stories of self-acting devices created by skilled workmen, designed for simple tasks, copying basic human actions. These artifacts laid the groundwork for the development of intelligent machines.
Over centuries, the idea of building intelligent machines progressively developed, driven by advances in science and technology. In the 19th century, scientists and inventors such as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace made significant contributions to the development of computing and the early concepts of programming. Their ideas paved the way for the creation of machines that could process information logically and perform complex tasks.
It was in the second half of the 20th century that AI, as a scientific subject, began to establish itself. With the coming of modern computers and increasing processing power, scientists started exploring algorithms (算法) and techniques to simulate aspects of human intelligence. The first experiments with expert systems and machine learning opened up new perspectives and possibilities.
After about 60 years of inactivity, in the early years of 21st century, AI is starting to have its moment. The power of machines, combined with the Internet, has made it possible to generate and explore enormous amounts of data (Big Data) using deep learning techniques, based on the use of formal neural (神经的) networks. A range of applications in various fields — including voice and image recognition, natural language understanding, and autonomous cars — has awakened the "giant". It is the rebirth of AI in an ideal era for this purpose. The perfect moment!
(1)、How does the author mainly oraganize the text?A、By giving examples. B、By analyzing data. C、By presenting time order. D、By making a comparison.(2)、What does the underlined word "coined" in paragraph 2 mean?A、Accepted. B、Invented. C、Recorded. D、Reserved.(3)、What made it possible for AI to establish itself as a scientific subject?A、The Early concepts of programming. B、The development of technology. C、The use of neural networks. D、The application of modern computers.(4)、What is the suitable title for the text?A、The Future of Intelligent Machines. B、A Crazy Man's Internet Prophecy. C、AI: Unlocking the Secrets of Intelligence. D、AI: the Booster of Human Civilization. -
11、The Arctic could see summer days with no sea ice as early as next decade, according to a new study out of the University of Colorado Boulder.
Moreover, by accounting for a long-term warming stage in the Pacific, the findings of the study suggest that the first ice-free day in the Arctic could occur over 10 years earlier than previously predicated, closer to 2035 than 2050. The trend remains consistent under all emissions (排放物) from fossil fuels. For example, under a high-emission prediction, the planet's northernmost region could become ice-free even in some winter months.
Sea ice declines have significant impacts on Arctic animals that rely on sea ice for survival, including seals and polar bears. In addition, as the ocean warms up, researchers are concerned that non-native fish could move into the Arctic Ocean. The impact of these invasive species on local ecosystems remains unclear. Sea ice loss also poses a risk to the communities living near the coastal region.
While an ice-free Arctic is unavoidable, future emission level will still determine how often the conditions occur. At an intermediate (中等程度的) emission level, a path the current society is on, the Arctic might become ice-free only during late summer and early fall from August to October. But at the highest emission level, the Arctic could be ice-free for up to nine months by late this century. "This would transform the Arctic into a completely different environment, from a white summer Arctic to a blue Arctic. So even if ice-free conditions are unavoidable, we still need to keep our emissions as low as possible to avoid prolonged ice-free conditions," scientist and researcher Alexandra Jahn said.
"Unlike the ice sheet in Greenland that took thousands of years to build, even if we melt all the Arctic sea ice, if we can then figure out how to take CO2 back out of the atmosphere in the future to reverse (逆转) warming, sea ice will come back within a decade," Jahn stressed.
(1)、According to the new study, when could the Arctic see its first ice-free day?A、Near 2035. B、After next decade. C、By 2050. D、By late this century.(2)、What would happen if the Arctic becomes ice-free?A、There would be no non-native fish in the Arctic. B、Seals and polar bears would lose their habitats. C、The Arctic would become a different white planet. D、The people living nearby would be flooded out.(3)、What determines the frequency of the Arctic becoming ice-free?A、Future emission level. B、The warming stage in the Pacific. C、The local ecosystems. D、Technological level.(4)、What is Jahn's attitude towards the Arctic becoming ice-free?A、Discouraged. B、Supportive. C、Indifferent. D、Positive. -
12、Jeanne Baret may not be as well-known as other explorers, but as the first woman to sail around the globe in the late 18th century, her achievements were no less remarkable.
Baret did not set out to be an explorer. She was born in July 1740 in a rural village in the Burgundy region of France. Her father was an uneducated laborer, and her mother was devoted to raising the family. It is widely believed that Baret had little, if any, formal education. Despite this, she was locally recognized for her expertise in herbalism (草药学) and was known as "the herb woman."
In 1765, Commerson, the famous botanist and naturalist from Burgundy, was invited to join a round-the-world expedition led by a French Navy officer and explorer. Baret was hired to assist comments on in the categorization of his plant specimens (标本). At that time, women were banned from serving aboard French naval ships. The most widely accepted story is that Baret, dressed as a man, managed to board the ship.
The ship sailed from Nantes to Rio de Janeiro in 1766, then to Montevideo where they collected plant specimens. The ship then went south through the Strait of Magellan and reached Tahiti. It is believed that Baret's true identity was revealed there but she remained on board nevertheless to continue her scientific work. Her careful documentation of up to 6,000 plant species, some of which were previously unknown to science, significantly enriched the botanical knowledge of the era.
This was not just a journey around the world; it was an expedition that reshaped perceptions (看法) of women's capabilities and roles in scientific discovery and adventure.
(1)、What do we know about Jeanne Baret's early life?A、She came from a well-off family. B、She was naturally curious in exploration. C、She gained recognition for curing patients. D、She hardly got any schooling.(2)、What is Baret's barrier to joining the voyage?A、Female identity. B、Lack of working experience. C、Poor physical strength. D、Limited knowledge.(3)、What impact did the expedition have on society at that time?A、It promoted French naval reform in many aspects. B、It confirmed women's role in scientific discovery and adventure. C、It diversified the local plant species and enriched the botanical knowledge. D、It changed people's views on women's ability and role in scientific exploration.(4)、Which of the following can best describe Baret?A、Reliable and skillful. B、Capable and careful. C、Gifted and determined. D、Ambitious and cooperative. -

A couple of years back, when I was still a teenager, I was troubled by frequent headaches that felt like I wanted to bang my head against a hard surface. I was eager to find a way to stop them. If you've been through this, I can feel your silent nod; for those who haven't, let me tell you, it's truly painful.
I had exhausted all possibilities. Sadly, none provided a lasting relief for my tormenting pain. In my desperation, my dad suggested I try acupuncture (针灸), something he once underwent in Hong Kong. It had relieved his backache when nothing else worked.
I was unfamiliar with acupuncture and hadn't tried out traditional Chinese medicine before. With my heart set on previous failures, I embarked on this acupuncture journey, ending up in a middle-aged lady's clinic filled with Chinese herbs.
Once I settled on the patient's chair, she inquired about my reason for visiting. After that, she placed three fingers on my wrist and silently checked my pulse. She then led me to a room and instructed me to lie down. Moments later, she took out needles, which made me anxious because I'm not comfortable with sharp objects.
The initial acupuncture session was a real surprise. To treat my headaches, the needles were first placed on the back of my hand, far from my head. The sensation was unexpected too: as the practitioner gently tapped and turned the needle in, I didn't feel the needle but a wave spreading through my body. She then continued with more needles all over: my head, face, stomach, legs, arms, and even toes. The entire session lasted just 20 minutes. Following that, she prescribed some herbal tea for me to drink daily for five days.

For thousands of years, Chinese people (value) the large family with three, four, or even five generations living under the same roof. In this way of life, the older generation can enjoy a happy and easy late life with their children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren growing up beside them and keeping them being lonely. However, as society advances and people enjoy a (comfortable) life, the big families begin to break up. Along with the growth of so-called "empty nestles", which means the young birds have flown away and only old are left alone, young parents are living with their own nuclear families. It goes without saying the collapse of big families and the popularity of smaller ones are the result of our times.
It is a time when people think highly of individual freedom happiness. Young people like to have a space all alone to themselves, which helps avoid conflicts (cause) by different living habits from their parents. It's also a time when problems of old age and childcare have been socialized gradually. Senior citizens can live together and (take) good care of by specialized nurses.
Therefore, there is every reason to believe that this trend of families in reduced size is (agree) to our times. To create a brighter future, we should do our best to build our society into one in every member lives healthily and harmoniously.

One day, I tried10 one of my favorite dresses and it wasn't passing through my waist at all. Glancing at myself in the mirror, I saw a11 person carrying extra weight, rather than someone enjoying freedom. The12 of work and personal life had left me feeling like I was a never ending motion machine.

17、Appreciating poetry begins with welcoming its unique rhythm and language. Start by reading the poem aloud, allowing its rhythm to reach you emotionally. Poetry is meant to be heard and reciting it can reveal hidden patterns or emotions that silent reading might miss. Does the poem speed up or slow down? These shifts often mirror its themes.
Notice the structure. Poems aren't just words on a page. Their form, including rhyme schemes, stanza breaks, and line lengths, contributes to meaning. A tightly structured poem might evoke (唤起) order, while broken lines could reflect chaos. Don't overlook punctuation (标点) or capitalization.
Engage yourself in imagery and metaphor. Poets paint pictures with words, so visualize the scenes they describe. Ask: What senses are engaged? A poem about rain might feel cold and damp. Figurative language like similes and metaphors invites you to explore deeper connections between seemingly unrelated ideas.
Consider the poet's perspective. Who is speaking? Is it the poet's voice, a character, or an abstract being? Understanding the "speaker" can clarify the poem's intention. Historical events, personal experiences, or cultural symbols may influence its meaning.
Poetry grows on emotion, and there's no "correct" interpretation. Your response — whether joy, sorrow, or curiosity — is acceptable. Revisit the poem: meanings often change with each reading. Take down questions it raises, and research unfamiliar references if they interest you.
In short, appreciating poetry is an adventure of discovery. Slow down, listen, and trust your feelings. Rather, it's about appreciating the interplay of sound, image, and idea that makes poetry timeless.
A. Let yourself feel.
B. Context matters as well.
C. Don't be afraid of making mistakes.
D. These shape how you stop and interpret.
E. Pay attention to how words flow together.
F. The poem's background determines the style.
G. This is not like unlocking a "secret password".

18、Childhood is a time of limitless possibilities. And old age is the time of wisdom. But for children who face the monster(恶魔)of cancer, their lives are fast- forwarded into profound wisdom. Not only do they have hand-to-hand struggle with the limits of life, they face it with raw truth1 and courage. For them, life is hard- won yet full of unbelievable hope, and is to be lived to the fullest.
We have much to learn from these children.
That's what art therapist(治疗专家), Lisa Murray, believed as she worked to help children with cancer to release their feelings through their drawings, which have turned into a book, Angels & Monsters.
Murray found that in their struggle, kids would tell her constantly, "I'm just a regular kid; I just want to play, to go to school, to go outside. . . I just happen to have cancer. "
She was moved and inspired by their simple will to survive. The children were facing the disease head on. She saw some powerful images in their artwork. "What courage it takes to do that, " said Murray.
Murray selected 25 children aged 13 months to 18 years. She asked the four- year-olds and up, "If you could tell the world what it is like to have cancer, what would you say, what would you draw?" For two- to three-year-olds, she asked, "What do you want to tell people about yourself?" And for the youngest, she just took their handprints. "It's such a human expression, ‘Here's my mark, ‘" said Murray.
She then asked them about their pictures, and wrote down exactly what they said. This gave the artwork a powerful voice. Coupled with Murray's photographs of the children in the book, the three forms of expression leave both a permanent record and lasting impression with the viewer.
As a therapist, Murray doesn't give the kids the impression that the drawing process is right or wrong. Whatever they draw is unconditionally acceptable. "Children play, they draw, and that's the natural language of children. That's why art therapy is so wonderful, "she said.
