  • 1. WALK FOR GREEN

How often do you walk around the campus instead of getting straight onto the shuttle bus? The beauties of our campus deserve to be better explored and can best be explored on foot. Walking is also a greener and healthier alternative to using vehicles. To encourage more students and staff members to walk around the campus, our school has launched a new "Walk for Green" initiative.

    Programme

Setting out from the MTR Station, "Walk for Green" recommends various walking routes on campus, one of which covers the YIA Building, LSK Building and LWS Building. Card readers for different walking routes have been installed (安装) to record the number of points completed by "Walk for Green" participants. Participants who collect 60 points within 30 days will be awarded the title "Green Walker".

    Participation

To participate, students and staff members would choose a marked route and tap their school cards at the card readers installed at both the start and end points (and also at an intermediate card reader). Name, student/staff ID, department/unit, date, time, and card readers tapped will be recorded.

    Walking Journey Points

    Important Notes:

    1. Walkers must complete one trip (either upwards or downwards) within one hour to score points.

    2. A maximum of six points will be awarded each day.

Every time you take a walk on campus, you are helping to preserve our environment and also keeping yourself healthy. Let's start from today!

(1)、Where does "Walk for Green" start?
    A、YIA Building. B、LSK Building. C、LWS Building. D、MTR Station.
(2)、What are participants required to do?
    A、Collect at least 6 points. B、Complete a round trip. C、Maintain a fixed speed. D、Choose a pre-set route.
(3)、How many points do you get by walking from YIA Building to LWS Building?
    A、1. B、2. C、3. D、6.

二、B

  • 2. Growing up in rural (农村的) communities, I always had a love of the countryside, animals and nature. The books I read as a child often had animals at their heart — The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark, Charlotte's Web.

Farming, however, was something I experienced later in life, in my teenage years. It's something I instantly connected with, and I feel fortunate that my children have been able to grow up helping out on the farm and spending lots of time with our livestock and pets.

It's so important to get a connection with farming at an early stage. We all eat food, so being familiar with where it comes from and what goes into producing it is a natural thing. If a spark of interest can be ignited early, it can only be a good thing going forward. It's a joy to see the children's faces light up on school visits when they see the photos of animals on our family farm and watch the video of an egg hatching (孵化). Animals have a unique magic all of their own.

Being around animals also teaches children what they can take with them into adulthood. It builds foundations of responsibility, kindness, as well as perseverance and problem solving. We work together as a family a lot on the farm, which builds a strong work ethic and a sense of teamwork — both fantastic life skills.

I'm a firm believer that you don't know what you're going to love until you try it. My hope is that if children from non-rural backgrounds get a taste of what it's like on a farm, then they might discover something they love.

(1)、How does the author lead into the topic?
A、By showing his desire to keep animals. B、By recommending his childhood reads. C、By sharing his own experience with nature. D、By comparing his farm life with his children's.
(2)、What does the underlined word "ignited" in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A、Awakened. B、Expressed. C、Weakened. D、Kept.
(3)、What role does an early contact with farming play in children's growth?
A、A time killer. B、A character builder. C、A social connector. D、An emotional comforter.
(4)、Which statement does the author probably agree with?
A、Well begun is half done. B、What pains us shapes us. C、Actions speak louder than words. D、Interest starts with practice.

  • 3. Have you ever wondered about the universal layout (布局) of supermarkets? Smart designers are behind it, subtly tempting you to walk through each aisle and fill your shopping cart without even realizing it.

Grocery store design is a carefully crafted art from both psychological and marketing standpoints, according to Reeves Connelly, who studied architectural design at the Pratt Institute. He explained there is a specific reason why fruit and vegetables are often located at the front of the store, "You'll grab the fruits and vegetables first and then hopefully feel less guilty about buying junk food later on." Meanwhile, essential items such as milk and eggs are placed at the back of the store to ensure customers walk through other aisles with many unhealthy options like snacks and sodas, potentially increasing the likelihood of impulse purchases.

There's also a reason why you often feel lost in local supermarkets. Shockingly, they move things around. Reeves explained, "They are very much aware that these strategies become less effective after you visit the store a few times and get a better sense of where everything is, so they'll regularly move the products to different aisles to con fuse you. The practice is not limited to a specific store but is employed across various retail chains."

"Their little tricks always work on me," one regular shopper admits, "I walk in to get three things and end up spending $300; that's why I hate grocery shopping," he said. On the other hand, some shoppers are proud to declare they have never fallen into the trap. "That's why I always keep a shopping list on me," another shopper shared. "I've started having my groceries delivered. If I have to go to the store, I never grab a trolley. If I can't carry it, I'm not buying it," he added.

(1)、What is the purpose of the supermarket layout?
A、To show the designer's wisdom. B、To save consumers' shopping time. C、To increase non-essential purchases. D、To provide multiple goods for choice.
(2)、What would the store owner probably do to make more profits?
A、Put the healthy food together. B、Distribute junk food in different areas. C、Place essential items before junk food. D、Rearrange products in supermarkets regularly.
(3)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A、Most shoppers are trapped in marketing tricks. B、Shopping baskets are better than heavy trolleys. C、Making lists can be a smart act for impulse buying. D、Grocery delivery can help improve supermarket sales.
(4)、Where is this text most likely from?
A、A business magazine. B、A psychology report. C、A research paper. D、A shopping guide.

  • 4. Mosquitoes (蚊子) carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering (基因工程) to make them into partners in the fight against the disease.

For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations. "But that approach is short-term," says Anthony James, a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California, Irvine. "because mosquitoes are very tough little insects, and their populations can quickly increase."

Therefore, James and his colleagues want to try a different approach: making mosquitoes themselves into malaria-fighting soldiers, which is completely different from traditional ways of controlling malaria.

To understand how it works, it is helpful to first understand the life cycle of malaria. The malaria pathogen (病原体) is a parasite (寄生虫) that grows inside humans. It's passed through mosquitoes that move from person to person, sucking blood. "If we can make the mosquitoes difficult for the pathogens to survive, we can wipe out the disease," he says. But making mosquitoes unattractive to malaria is an extremely challenging task.

To solve the problem, the team used a gene-editing technique (技术) called CRISPR. They started with genes from mice, whose immune (免疫的) systems can fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them into the mosquitoes.

It turned out the gene-edited mosquitoes worked very well. They reduced the number of parasites in the mosquitoes before they were passed to a human host.

However, there is a long way to go. James' team are now working on planning a field experiment, which he hopes could be done on an island or another distant location.

But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. "There's no need to engineer a mosquito," says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth. Perls points out that natural ways to reduce malaria appear to be showing promise, as does a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease. "Why take unnecessary risks and use mosquitoes that can't be controlled once sent into the wild?" she asks.

(1)、What can we know from the second and third paragraphs?
A、Mosquitoes can reproduce quickly. B、Mosquitoes can be easily controlled. C、Mosquitoes have killed thousands of people. D、Mosquitoes have been used to fight against malaria.
(2)、How is the research of gene-editing technique going?
A、It is still in laboratory tests. B、It has been tested on humans. C、It has been fully applied in the wild. D、It has been stopped due to environmental protection.
(3)、What is environmentalists' attitude towards this new approach?
    A、Uninterested. B、Unsupportive. C、Positive. D、Unclear.
(4)、What is the best title for the text?
A、Preventing Malaria with a New Vaccine B、Defeating Malaria with Gene-Edited Mosquitoes C、Limiting Malaria by Controlling Mosquito Populations D、Controlling Malaria by Engineering Mosquitoes' Genes
