I remember, when I was growing up, that my mom would tell me stories about the kind acts my dad had done. One day, my dad met a close, long time friend of his in the downtown area. They talked for a while and his friend 1  that he didn't have money for 2  home. My dad gave him the 3  money he had, which was for his own train, so he just 4  home. 

I also 5  these kind acts in our home. Dad would let me and my two younger brothers eat first but he would eat after us. He would 6  whatever was 7  on the table. I remember the days when his older brother would sometimes come to our house and 8  money for his kid's allowance(零花钱) in school and my dad would give him some. And when it was our time to ask for allowance he would tell us that he had no more money and we should ask our mom. 

Dad was a 9  man and even after his death, there were many people who told me kind 10  that my dad had done for them, like 11  them food. He even 12  to help someone fix his roof and buy him a water pump when he had the money. 

In my 13  life, I never met a man like my dad. For me, he was the kindest, most selfless man on Earth. He would always give 14  when he could and he gave it with a(n) 15  heart. 

Tips for Green Travel with Kids

Travelling doesn't mean letting go of all the eco­friendly choices we work so hard to achieve in our daily life. Here are a few tips for green travel with kids. 

Booking non­stop flights whenever possible will reduce carbon emissions(碳排放). If the closest local airport doesn't have non­stop flights to a certain place, check in with other local airports to see if non­stop flights are available. 

Whether you're flying or driving, it's easy when travelling to pull into fast food restaurants for snacks.  My kids love to help plan snacks. I let them create their own snacks for the trip at home. 

 At the airport, keep your reusable bottles empty until you have passed through the security(安检). Fill them up on the other side of the security checkpoint. Single­use plastic water bottles create unnecessary waste and the plastic can be harmful to your health. 

 Open a few windows and turn off the air conditioner(空调). You should also help your children keep their good, green habits from home to place while travelling. Sometimes vacation can mean more than one shower each day—once in the morning and again after getting out of the pool. Pay attention to the number of showers and the length of showers. 

A. Walking is good for your health. 

B. Try to cut back to save water and energy. 

C. But you can pack healthy food from home. 

D. Travelling is a great chance to introduce your kids to the world. 

E. Reusable water bottles are easy to bring along wherever you travel. 

F. Save energy by turning off the hotel room lights when you head out for the day. 

G. You might have to drive a bit further, but saving on carbon emissions makes it worthwhile. 

If you are planning on travelling, there are a few simple rules about how to make life easier both before and after your journey. 

First of all, always check and double­check departure(出发) time. It is surprising how few people really do this carefully. Once I arrived at the airport a few minutes after ten. My secretary had got the ticket for me and I thought she had said that the plane left at 10：50. When I arrived at the airport, the person at the departure desk told me that my flight was closed. Therefore, I had to wait three hours for the next one and missed an important meeting. 

The second rule is to remember that even in this age of credit cards(信用卡), it is still important to have some local money in cash(现金). Once I arrived at a place at midnight and the bank at the airport was closed. The only way to get to my hotel was by taxi but because I had no dollars, I offered to pay in pounds instead. "Listen! I only take real money！" the driver said angrily. You can imagine how terrible I felt at that moment.

The third and the last rule is to find out as much as you can about the weather at your destination before you leave. I feel sorry for some of my workmates who travel in heavy suits and raincoats in May, when it is still fairly cool in London or Manchester, to places like Athens, Rome or Madrid, where it is already beginning to get quite warm during the day. 

Driving on up to Yosemite with my family was exciting but nerve­racking(神经紧张的). I had never been to such an amazing national park before, yet I wasn't the most athletic person, so I knew that I couldn't stick through all the hiking up and down. It actually ended up being a fun and adventurous experience. 

The ride there was definitely long but worth it. As I woke up from my nap, I saw the beautiful scenery of the tall mountains and beautiful streams. The trails were made nicely for visitors. The waterfalls were breathtaking. Climbing up rocks was one of my favorite parts. Even though I fell a couple of times, I still had a lot of fun. The fact that my family and I spent so much time together trying to find out which route to take and what views to watch really brought us closer together. 

The great thing about nature is that, it's just you, the views, and the people around you. There's nothing there to bother you and it's the best way to relax and enjoy yourself. Yosemite has 5 of the world's highest waterfalls, and about 300 lakes. The structure of each mountain is incredible; it's formed in ways that almost take your breath away. Some of them are of a deep dark color with waterfalls forming; some are formed with spots of green peeking(探出) out. It's definitely something that you wouldn't want to miss. 

Yosemite isn't the only great National Park but based on my experience I highly recommend going out and enjoying nature with family and friends. It's a great time to bond, laugh, and take in what Mother Nature offers. 

A Love Note to My Mum

When I was a little girl, you always modelled for fashion photographers. It was years later that I finally understood the role that modelling plays in your life. Little did I know you were saving every penny you made to go to law school. 

I cannot thank you enough for what you told me one autumn afternoon when I was nine. After finishing my homework, I went into the dining room where you were focusing on reading law books. I was confused. Why were you doing what I do—memorising textbooks and studying for tests? When you said you were in law school, I was even more surprised. I didn't know mums could be lawyers, too. You smiled and said, "In life, you can do anything you want to do. "

As young as I was, those words kept ringing in my ears. I watched as you faced the challenges of completing your studies, starting companies with Dad, while still being a model and a mum of five kids. You never complained and gave up. With your words of wisdom in my mind, I suddenly felt the freedom to dream. My whole world opened up. I set out to live my life filled with hope, seeing endless possibilities for personal and professional success. 

Your words became my motto(座右铭). As I grew up, I always found myself in the unique position of being either the first or one of the few women (chief medical reporters) in my field. I gained power every time I said, "Yes, I'll try that. "

Encouraged by your words, I have forged ahead(毅然前行) with my life's journey, less afraid to make mistakes or to meet challenges. You did it, and now I'm doing it. Sorry, I have got to run. So much to do, so many dreams to realise.

The Artist is a movie set in a neighborhood of the French capital, by the River Seine. Made in 1940, this black and white movie has made cinema history. A romantic drama that will make you cry, it is well worth watching. Don't worry if you don't know French; you can read the subtitles(字幕). Showing Sunday morning in the Blue Cafe' Theatre.

The Orange Cinema Company

Star Traveler is a great movie for science­fiction fans who like to have a good laugh at the same time. It may not be the best film of all time, but it certainly is the funniest. You will love Wil, the star traveler, who gets lost in space, chased by green aliens. Showing from Saturday at all Orange Cinemas, 7：00 p. m. , 9：00 p. m. and 11：30 p. m.

I discovered the joy of playing table tennis when I enter high school. At first, I was hesitant to try the sport, but after watching a few excited matches, I was attracted. I started practicing with friends and soon joined in a local club. I spent countless hours perfecting my skills or learning new strategies. My hard work paid back when I won my first tournament, what inspired me to work harder. Play table tennis became a way for me to forget the pressure of high school. It also taught us valuable lessons about teamwork and hard works. Though I've graduated, I will always treasure memories of those days. 

In some parts of northern China, "dikengyuan" in Mandarin, which means "ground hole courtyards," is a type of cave dwellings（"yaodong"）commonly （find）in the Loess Plateau in northern China. Academic literature mentions they came into （exist）about 7, 000 years ago.

The soil of the Loess Plateau,  these cave dwellings are built, is an effective substance that can keep people warm during the winter. More  （important）, the yellow earth of the Loess is not only soft and easy  （dig）into, but also strong enough that it can hold together even without support. 

While the size of the courtyard  （vary）, the cave dwellings can go up to 12 meters long. After a ground hole is dug for the courtyard, the rooms  （carve）out from the four walls of the sunken courtyard. 

Some scholars outside China consider the dwellings to be a natural adaptation to the climatic patterns in that region, with  （freeze）and long winters, and extremely burning summer heat. 

While these houses have been around for thousands of years,  government only listed them as part of China's intangible cultural heritage in 2011. 

Many of these ancient homes, especially in the Shanzhou district of Sanmenxia City in China's Henan province, have been restored and turned  tourist attractions.
