The easiest way to know how you can help others is simply to ask them. Talk to a family member or friend, ask them what they most need help with, and offer your services. Then, follow through and try your best to do what they've asked of you. Remember actions always speak louder than words!

Be proactive (积极主动的).

Look for opportunities to help and lend a hand without being asked. . For example, you can call your elderly grandpa to check in, bring your friend dinner while they're sick or just hold the elevator door for a neighbor. Don't wait for someone to ask for help — train yourself to think about all the different ways you can help people. Focus on being as friendly as possible, and you'll get the hang of it!

Be a nonjudgmental (无偏见的) listener.

Sometimes, listening is more helpful and healing than practical assistance. Not everybody is looking for hands-on help or a solution to their problems. . When someone is telling you about a hardship they're going through, listen actively and focus on understanding them rather than fixing their problems.

Send a thoughtful note.

Begun 30 years ago, the Kubuqi desert greening project has succeeded in not only controlling the fast growth of the seventh-largest desert in China, about the size of Kuwait, but also turning about 6, 000 square kilometers of the desert — one-third of it — green. 

The desert lies about 800 kilometers to the west of Beijing in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region (自治区) and the greening efforts have also controlled desertification (沙漠化) in the rest of the area. 

The project, which began about 30 years ago, can be looked to as an example of efforts to advance green development, in order to create harmony between humans and nature, and leave a better environment for future generations. 

The success of the project, which has been praised by the UN Environment Programme as an "eco-pioneer", sets an example for successful desertification control and ecosystem improvement based on effective government policies, supported by investment (投资) in the eco industry and combined with the efforts of local farmers. These three aspects are key to the success of the "Kubuqi model".

Elion, a private ecology (生态) and investment company, has invested about 38 billion yuan ($5. 82 billion) in the Kubuqi desert-greening project since 1988 helping to lift about 102, 000 local farmers out of poverty. For example, the locals grow a drought-tolerant (耐旱) plant, Chinese licorice, which is the most used herb in traditional Chinese medicine. The plant helps enrich the desert soil, with the bacteria around the roots of the plants producing nitrogen (氮气) . Besides, Cistanche, another type of drought-tolerant herb, was introduced after the successful planting of licorice. Under the company's guidance and with the local government's support, the local people benefit from the "environmental wealth".

More companies should be encouraged to apply the "Kubuqi model" in other desert control projects in Inner Mongolia and neighboring Gansu province, where the climate conditions are similar but not quite the same, so as to further gain experience and enrich the model in practice. Showing it can be successfully applied in other areas will help promote the model worldwide.

I've been having trouble concentrating on one thing. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.

In my first literature class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. Study for your tests as soon as possible. If you finish it fast, you will have more time to relax and do your favourite things. In addition, waiting until late at night will only make things harder because you may feel tired.

Kung Pao Chichen is a traditional Chinese dish and famous for its richness and variety and regarded by many as the most popular Chinese dish internationally. You can find it in almost any Chinese restaurant overseas. Its （popular）has made it a name card for Chinese cuisine. （It）flavor combines sour, sweetness and spiciness, with the first two as the major ones. It's a good choice for the feast（宴会）on the Spring Festival Eve, most Chinese families enjoy time together.

Kung Pao Chichen is a dish from Sichuan cuisine, it originated from Lu cuisine in Shandong Province. The dish is believed to be the creation of Ding Baozhen, official during the Qing Dynasty. Ding （serve）as a leader in Shandong Province and later in Sichuan Province. He favoured peanuts and spicy food, so he improved the Shandong dish "Jiang Bao Chichen" by （add）pepper to it. After he came to Sichuan, the dish was popularised.

The dish spreads so （wide）that it's been localised in various places,. Some even use meat instead of chicken （cook）this dish. When it went to the West, the people there also improved it according their own preferences.

As English learners, you often feel anxious when you have to speak English in front of others.  Here are some solutions to help you build confidence in speaking English. 

Adopt a practice and repetition routine（常规）. When something becomes natural to you, you begin to feel confident of doing it And the only way you can arrive at this "natural" way of doing things is through practice and repetition. So write down what you may talk about and then practise saying it aloud and repeatedly before an English meeting.

Recently, the researchers for underwater exploration introduced a new robot, which is soft and has no harm to sea life when it works. However, they are not so welcome in the robot market because they are quite slow and have a hard time operating through the water. But that may change soon thanks to a self-driven soft robot created by researchers at the University of California. 

For their design, the researchers got inspiration from one of nature's fastest swimmers—squids（乌贼）. They can use their strong muscles to draw in water and promptly spread it out. By doing this, they are able to move forward at a fast speed.

The recently-developed robot, which looks like a paper lantern, was basically built using soft materials. An nozzle（喷嘴）fixed on one side helps draw in and release water each time the robot shrinks, which enables it to swim forward, similar to a squid. A plate holds a waterproof part that can house a camera to record data, which is of great value to further development of the robot. It also has its own power source, allowing it to float for a long time. 

"Importantly, we recreated all the key features that squids use for high-speed swimming. This is the first robot that can achieve the result by changing its body shape, which improves swimming efficiency (效率)." said Professor Michael T.

Though the squid robot has not been tested in open waters it successfully swam around coral and fish in a large tank. What's more, the robot had an impressive speed of 18 to 32 centimeters per second, or about half a mile per hour. Though nowhere close to real squids, it is faster than most other soft robots.

The way you use your cellphones around your family can have an effect on your relationships. Cellphones can make you feel more connected, but they can also distract（使分心）you and your family from connecting with each other in person. While some people need to check their phones for work or emergency（紧急情况）purposes, it's important to make meaningful connections through face-to-face communication.

Some people have trouble putting away their cellphones. They might feel they can't control how often they pick up their phones or how long they use them. They might feel the need to often check phones without a real reason or feel upset if they don't have an opportunity to use their phones. Using cellphones for work purposes during family time can increase worries and unhappiness among family members. While using their cellphones, parents talk to their kids less, reply more slowly, and overreact to being interrupted. And ignoring their partner while on the phone is linked to lower relationship satisfaction among couples.

Once you've given some thought to your own cellphone use, think about the rules you want your family to follow when you're together. To get your family on the same page, call a family meeting. Review each person's current cellphone use and areas where you think some changes might help. It's not just about simply cutting cellphone use down. Instead, consider what you're using your phone for and what activities you want to carry out.

For example, are you or your children using phones to stay connected, learn something new, do school work, or do something else? If you have kids, ask their opinions on your own phone use. You might be surprised by what they have to share. Use good communication skills by practicing active listening and showing curiosity about what each family member has to say. 

Less phone use also usually means less screen time, which enables kids to spend more time outdoors and be more physically active. When teens spend more time actively with their parents, they tend to set higher educational goals. 

When you get older your parents let you stay up later. But that doesn't make it a good idea. Tired people tend to be unhappy ones, and their schoolwork suffers, says a recent study by the US National Sleep Foundation.

"If you don't get enough sleep at night, you tend to sleep in school. If you're asleep, you don't learn anything," says Mary Carskadon, an American sleep researcher.

Sleep is important because it gives our bodies time to recover from the stress of living. Studies show that adults who sleep less than six hours a night tend to have more heart problems. They die sooner than adults who sleep seven to eight hours a night. 

How much sleep do you need? That depends on how old you are. Babies spend most of the day sleeping. By the time they`re 10 years old, they need an average（平均）of 10 hours a night. As they get older, they tend to sleep less. And the Sleep Foundation says that teenagers need 8.5 to nine hours. But in experiments where young teens are allowed to sleep as long as they want, they tend to choose to sleep an average of 10 hours. 

However, it does seem difficult for kids to get the sleep they need, given the demands（要求）made on them by education. Some schools start as early as 7 am. Some schools have late classes or self-study sessions（时段）that end as late as 10 pm. 

You have to study, but here are some tips that should help you feel less tired. 

Watch less television. Go to bed just 30 minutes earlier each school night, and you'll gain two hours and a half of sleep a week.

Cutting out caffeine（咖啡因）also helps. Soda, tea and coffee help you stay wake, but they can make it harder to fall asleep. 

Before you go to bed, turn off any electrical devices（电子设备）as these can make it more difficult to get to sleep. 

So, switch off the TV, the computer and the lights. Oh, yes, and sweet dreams!

I am a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic. She was born in August and her name is Aida. 

Shortly after having Aida, my mother­in­law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend's mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had showed me how to knit(编织) a scarf. She showed me stitches(针) and gave me her half done project. 

I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn(线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts. 

There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold. 

Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging times, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses. 

It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, "Mum, it is freezing outside！" Then, he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great art project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.
