  • 1、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

The classroom notice board seemed to laugh at Jack. His name was written poorly on the speech competition list. He stared at the names, feeling quite nervous.

"Surprise, Jack!" Tom shouted suddenly behind him. A group of classmates stood by the windows, holding back laughter. "You'll st-st-stutter(结巴) again, like in math class!" Tom said, copying Jack's way of speaking. "The ‘Human Subwoofer'is back!"

Jack's face burned. The nickname (绰号), Human Subwoofer, had stuck with him since seventh grade. He held the sign-up sheet tightly, not knowing what to do. For years, he'd avoided busy hallways and hidden during breaks to escape jokes.

At lunchtime, Jack wandered to the auditorium (礼堂). Through the half-open door, he watched students practising speeches. They spoke loudly with expressive faces. Jack pulled out his sign-up sheet and took a closer look. The handwriting wasn't his parents' — it was Tom's!

A strong wave of anger swept over Jack. Tom had signed him up as a cruel joke. His first thought was to throw the paper away and forget about it. But as days passed, something inside him changed. He couldn't let Tom's laughter control how he saw himself anymore.

He began practising his speech alone. In his room, he stood in front of a mirror and gave himself confidence. "H-hello," he repeated, his voice shaky. He kept practising after school, hiding in empty classrooms. Slowly, his stuttering grew softer.

One afternoon, he heard Tom talking to friends by chance, "Watch him st-st-stutter on stage! It'll be funny!" Their laughter cut through the air like a knife. Determined, Jack said to himself in a low voice, "I'll show them."

    1.所续写短文的词数应为100左右。

    2.续写部分为一段,开头语已为你写好。

Forests, are necessary for life on Earth, faceincreasing threat from human activities. These green spaces not only provide oxygen but also serve as (nature) homes for countless species. Moreover, they play an important role in preventing soil erosion and keeping the weather balanced. However, many people still don't understand (they) true value, treating forests carelessly.

Recent studies show that trees clean the air more effectively than (previous) thought. A healthy forest can take in up to 30% of carbon dioxide (produce) by human activities, greatly slowing down global warming. Despite this, we continue destroying forestsan alarming rate of 15 million hectares annually. For example, the Amazon rainforest, often called the "lungs of the Earth", has decreased by 20% in the past 50 years.

The protection of forests requires immediate action. Governments should take measures (encourage) better practices, such as planting new trees for each tree removed. Ordinary people can help by reducing paper waste and supporting (organize) that plant trees. Additionally, raising public awareness is of great importance. If everyone (contribute), we can preserve these precious ecosystems for future generations.

  • 13、Starting a new environmental-friendly habit can be very difficult. New "green" products are popping up every day but too hard to learn and use. . The good news is that this isn't a totally new playing field. Long before bamboo toilet paper were invented, someone else was running their households with very little waste: our grandmothers. Here are their good old wisdom.

    Stop using "disposables"

Disposables (一次性物品) like paper cup weren't popularised until the mid-1900s. So what was everyone doing before then? Turn to glass cup, save highly effective paper products for your next party trick and head back to the original mess cleaner: cloth towels (毛巾). . There are also a million designs to suit your kitchen.

Blow your nose a bit greener

We can't picture our grandmother without at least one handkerchief (手帕) in their purse or pockets. The time of handkerchiefs has gone as paper towel take off, but using a washable handkerchief isn't just better for the planet, it's also a must when going through a cold. .

We all love fresh flowers in our homes, but buying cut flowers from grocery stores can include the throwing away of imperfect blooms, and a lot of other wasteful behaviours. . If you have space to grow your own garden, it's easy to cut a few blooms, and if you can, find some wildflowers instead of store-bought ones.

    A. Turn to "washables".

    B. Source your flowers.

    C. Luckily, our grandmas have better choices.

    D. Our grandmother only ever washed in cold water.

    E. The soft cotton cloth will be so much gentler on your nose.

    F. And then some of them are actually worse for the environment.

    G. They can absorb more water and be easily hand-washed in cold water.

  • 14、Babies experience a flood of information related to the senses from the moment they are born. Knowing nothing about the world, they must learn to organize that information into groups of things — especially faces, one of the most important sights babies start to learn during the first month.

A recent study found babies' ability to recognize faces is helped by their mother's body smell, and that the influence of smell weakens as babies grow. This broadens scientists' understanding of how using multiple (多种的) senses together plays a role in early learning.

Dr. Arnaud Leleu, a neuro-scientist and the leader of the research team, used EEG (脑电图) to record the brain activity of 50 babies with different ages while they watched a stream of six images per second. Among each sixth image was a human face, and the others were animals or things. The researchers expected that if the babies were focusing special attention on faces, there would be a once-per-second sharp rise on EEG to match the appearance of the face images — a so-called face-selective reaction. They also gave the babies T-shirts with their mothers' body smell to see their reaction changes.

Overall, face-selective reactions grew stronger and more detailed with age. But the team also found the mothers' body smell enhance(增强) babies' attention to faces in the youngest babies and that this enhancement slowly lessened in older babies. "This could mean young babies depend more on their mother's smell because their ability to identify faces using sight alone is still developing," Leleu says.

The findings show the importance of learning through multiple senses early in life. "To help babies learn, we should use all the senses," Leleu says. "Our senses help us recognize the world, forming the basis for ideas, language, and memories". He is now studying further the smell's effect on how we sense the world in other age groups. He says he's finding that if a thinking task is made difficult enough, even adults can use their noses to help.

(1)、What does the recent research focus on?
A、Babies' recognition abilities. B、Mother's natural body smells. C、Scientists' experiment in smell. D、Multiple senses in early learning.
(2)、What do we know about the "face-selective reaction" in paragraph 3?
A、It happens when babies focus on faces. B、It appears to be a one-second sharp rise. C、It shows brain activities related to smell. D、It is babies' reaction to mothers' clothes.
(3)、What can we infer about Leleu's experiment in the passage?
A、Babies' learning begins with sense of smell. B、Human learning abilities decrease with age. C、Sense of smell can make up for that of sight. D、Body smell enhances human understanding.
(4)、What might Dr. Leleu aim to explore next in his research?
A、The effectiveness of EEG in enhancing adult memory. B、How adults use smell to help solve difficult mental tasks. C、Why babies recognize animal faces faster than human faces. D、The link between smell and language development in babies.
  • 15、Have you ever noticed that people often perform better when others believe in them? This phenomenon is called the "Pygmalion Effect" — a psychological rule where high expectations lead to improved performance. Named after a Greek myth (神话) about a sculptor (雕塑家) who brought his statue to life through belief, this effect shows how positive expectations can create real success. For example, in sports, a coach's trust might push athletes to break their limits.

The idea was tested in a famous 1968 study by psychologists Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson. They told teachers that certain students in a classroom were "late bloomers" with high potential(潜能), though these students were actually chosen by chance. By the end of the school year, those considered as "high-potential" showed much better grades and IQ scores. Teachers also reported these students asking more questions and showing greater curiosity. This proved that teachers' beliefs about students directly influenced their performance.

The Pygmalion Effect works through a cycle of encouragement and behavior. When someone (e.g. a teacher or manager) believes another person can succeed, they unconsciously give more support, advice and opportunities. For example, a teacher might call on a "high-potential" student more often or praise their efforts, which promotes the student's confidence and effort. Over time, this creates a self-fulfilling prophecy — the belief that something will happen makes it happen.

This effect has important applications in education, workplaces, and parenting. Studies show that when leaders express confidence in their teams, productivity and creativity increase. Even small acts of trust, like giving them challenging tasks, can inspire better results. Similarly, children whose parents encourage their abilities often develop stronger skills. However, the opposite is also true: low expectations can limit growth. By understanding the Pygmalion Effect, we can create environments where everyone feels empowered to reach their potential. Plus, recognizing people's efforts can really encourage the good results, helping everyone keep growing and developing.

  • 16、Imagine a warm, summer day at Juhu Beach in Mumbai. Ocean waves crash along the shore; the sun shines on the horizon. But what if the sun sets in Juhu and doesn't rise again for months and the sea freezes over? Well, this is the kind of place where I've worked over the last decade. As a sea ice scientist, I live through the winter in the 24x7 polar (极地的) darkness and extremely low temperatures of six-month-long nights in the Arctic and the Antarctic.

Yet, my early experiences were far from pleasant. Besides being unable to clearly mark the passage of time, the lack of sunlight brings both a physical and a mental suffering. One's body clock turns off, leading to constant tiredness and little drive to focus on work. My mood is a very flat sine wave (正弦波). Missing family and friends makes it worse.

Unlike where I grew up — in warm, green Trivandrum, Kerala, filled with rich sights, sounds and people —l ife at the Poles is quiet. As the days shorten, almost all life starts to leave looking for warmer lands, but those who stay are greeted by breathtaking glacier (冰川) and an otherworldly view. In the coldest winter months, the sun seems to live only in memory. Its disappearance, however, is not real: Polar lights, showing blue, red, yellow and green, snake like waving curtains across the deep black sky, reminding me that the light shall one day return and there is wonder to enjoy.

It took me years to adapt and fall in love with these environments and now I am excited to throw myself into another journey in this land of darkness and slow-moving time. What pulls me back time and again is its unshakable peace and calmness. It quiets you, fills you with wonder and changes your soul. Being restless by nature, I have had to find patience, build determination, and learn how to solve problems without losing control.

(1)、Why does the author ask readers to imagine a day in paragraph 1?
A、To inspire readers' imagination. B、To show his regret for his choice. C、To share a place he dreamt about. D、To stress the hardship he suffered.
(2)、How does the author probably feel at the beginning of the job?
    A、Rather excited. B、Extremely upset. C、A little enjoyable. D、Greatly nervous.
(3)、What is paragraph 3 mainly about in terms of polar life?
A、The amazing beauty. B、The scientific wonders. C、The former good lives. D、The upsetting quietness.
(4)、Why did the author fall in love with the polar life?
A、He a preference for challenges. B、It benefited his scientific exploration. C、He adapted to the tough environment. D、It improved his character and qualities.
  • 17、Any road can be frightening in the wrong weather conditions or with a careless driver on the loose but here we list some of the most dangerous roads in the world.

    Col du Chaussy, France

At 1,532 metres above sea level, Col du Chaussy in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France is a high mountain pass that starts with the famous "Les Lacets de Montvernier." This special road is only about 3.2 km long but features 17 sharp turns as you climb up an actual cliff. There are safety fences along the way but this strange Z-shape road, though with wonderful landscape, is still one of the most dangerous roads in the world.

    Karnali Highway, Nepal

About 50 people die here every year, making a drive on the 250 km Karnali Highway in the Himalayas of West Nepal a real death wish. It is one of the most dangerous roads in the world even when it's not rainy season because the surface is extremely dusty and includes narrow sections, landslides, falling rocks, flooded sections, holes and huge drops off steep cliffs. And now it is only a road passable, at best, during the day as driving at night are not allowed because of the high number of deadly accidents.

    Commonwealth Avenue, Philippines

Unlike other roads and highways on this list, this one isn't sitting on the edge of a mountain or near a falling bridge. In fact, it's a wide city highway that's just 12 km long. Twenty-meter-wide to be specific and due to heavy traffic, poor drainage (排水) which brings floods on the road, and the constant presence of motorbikes and walking people that tour buses can't even see, this road has earned the sad nickname

"Killer Highway" because of the many accidents and deaths there.

(1)、What will a driver experience on Col du Chaussy?
    A、Falling rocks. B、Smooth driving. C、Heavy rainfall. D、Beautiful views.
(2)、Why are driving at night on Karnali Highway not allowed?
A、Many deadly accidents. B、Super wet road. C、Large crowds of tourists. D、Extreme weather.
(3)、What do Karnali Highway and Commonwealth Avenue have in common?
A、They both carry heavy traffic. B、They are both built in mountains. C、They are both in poor conditions. D、They are both hit by natural disasters.
  • 18、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Sarah, a woman overwhelmed by life's struggles, stumbled toward her tiny apartment. She kept shaking in the storm, tears mixing with cold rain running down her pale face. When lightning flashed, it lit up the painful cuts on her hands — wounds from broken glass when she fell earlier. As she tried to open the door, the old keys kept slipping from her freezing fingers. All she wanted was to fall into a deep sleep and forget everything.

Years earlier, her husband disappeared, leaving her to raise their daughter Lily alone. Then she lost her job at the factory. Soon after, doctors found Lily had a rare heart condition. But fate twisted the knife deeper: during a routine checkup, Sarah learned that she had lung cancer — a sickness probably passed down from her mother. Hiding her illness to protect Lily, she sold her belongings, skipped meals, and worked night shifts at a diner, trying to keep life as normal as possible for her daughter.

That rainy night, while delivering food on her old bike, Sarah suddenly couldn't breathe. Gasping for air, she collapsed on a wet bridge, her head hitting the pavement. Blood mixed with rainwater as she faded in and out of awareness. After lying dazed for minutes, she staggered up, left her bike behind, and dragged herself home like a ghost. She fell onto her worn-out couch, her labored breaths echoing in the darkness.

Meanwhile, others were searching. Paramedic (急救人员) Laura had barely touched her cold sandwich when another call came in. "A woman had collapsed on the bridge. She looked dead," a scared witness reported. Laura's team, already exhausted from eighteen emergencies that day, raced through the rain. At the scene, they found only a bent bicycle and faint pink stains on the wet pavement. Checking nearby security cameras, they watched Sarah stagger away from the site. The trail led to an apartment building with broken hallway lights.
