12、4 Things Parents Should Always Keep in Mind During a Heat Wave
A heat wave sweeps across the country this week.. Tony Woodward, medical director of emergency medicine at Seattle Children's, provides the following advice for parents and caregivers about how to beat the heat as well as keep their kids safe this summer.
Keep kids out of hot cars.
Leaving a child alone in a car can result in deadly consequences, even on just a warm day. "It doesn't take very long:," says Woodward. "When you combine this with the fact that the temperature in your car can rise nearly 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, dangerous heatstroke can develop quickly."
.
While the local lake or pool may provide a good place from the heat, parents and caregivers should be mindful of the dangers water presents. "Drowning is the second-leading cause of injury-related death for children aged 1-14," says Woodward. So children should swim only when lifeguards are on duty.
Prevent window falls.
The summer weather has parents and caregivers opening windows and doors to try to get some circulation (循环) and relief from the heat. Woodward warns that open windows can be a big danger to young children. Thus make it a rule to play at least 2 feet away from windows..
Protect your child from too much sun.
, though they do come with their risks. Woodward recommends parents to safeguard their children from the ill effects of exposure to too much sun. For example, when it is 90 degrees or above, children should not play outside or exercise for more than 30 minutes at a time.
A. Enjoy the water safely
B. Avoid water in hot surroundings
C. If the weather is not friendly to the children
D. Thus many families have health concerns in mind
E. A child's body heats up much faster than an adult's
F. Summer months are also for families to go outdoors
G. And make sure other caregivers know about it as well

13、To be clear: Food noise has nothing to do with hunger or food shortage, says Lawrence Cheskin, a professor of nutrition and food studies at George Mason University. It's about being absorbed in thoughts about food.
In an issue of the journal Nutrients, researchers defined food noise as something that can be caused by internal signs such as your stomach growling with hunger or external signs such as seeing or smelling delicious foods. These signs can cause food-related thoughts to start playing on a repetitive cycle.
"Imagine you have a picture chart — think about what percentage of the day is spent thinking about food," says Susan Albers, a clinical psychologist. "For those with a lot of food noise, 80 to 90 percent of their day is spent thinking about food." "For those with intrusive food noise, it might affect their sleep, or lead to shame around eating or anxious thoughts," says Goldman. "It can get in the way of someone being able to function at their best." By contrast, those with mild food noise may hardly notice it.
Anyone can experience food noise but people with obesity or overweight often struggle with food noise more than other people do, which can make it difficult to lose weight. Other people include those with an eating disorder or disordered eating pattern. Also, if you have a lot of food rules or you've been dieting off and on for years, you may be more likely to experience food noise. "There's a lot of shame and judgment around food noise," Albers says. "It can impact relationships, leading to social withdrawal, and reduce people's engagement in other areas of their life."
Keep in mind, however, that food noise is a common suffering. "Don't beat yourself up for it. Instead, exercise some self-sympathy," Goldman suggests. "The way we talk to ourselves matters, so be mindful about what you're saying to yourself about food noise."
(1)、What do we know about the food noise?A、It's the noise people make while eating. B、It's only for people with weight issues. C、It refers to repeated food thoughts due to signs. D、It's related to food shortage and causes hunger.(2)、What does the underlined word "intrusive" in paragraph 3 probably mean?A、annoying B、inviting C、available D、unnoticeable(3)、How does food noise affect people's life?A、It leads to severe weight gain. B、It brings about regular eating habits. C、It results in a lack of social activities. D、It causes sleep disorders and overeating.(4)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A、Being kind to yourself is helpful. B、Food noise is not a serious problem. C、Talking to others about food noise matters. D、People should blame themselves for food noise. -
14、The big day is finally here. You and your team have made it to the final game of the soccer tournament. You're ready to win... but so is the other team. Then, suddenly, someone scores! The game is over. The other team has won and earns a shiny gold cup. But then the coaches start giving out something else to you and the other players: participation (参与) awards. Everyone reacts differently. Some glow with pride. Others look disappointed. And you? You don't know how to feel...
Participation awards have been around since the 1920s, when they were invented to make sports safer for kids. That's because when the first youth sports leagues were created in the early 1900s, games were even more competitive than they are today. Many kids were badly hurt in their effort to win. Adults were concerned. Some schools even canceled sports programs altogether.
But then came a solution: participation awards. The point was to take the spotlight away from winning and put it on other values, like teamwork and commitment, or sticking with something. Many people today say that's why participation awards are still needed. "Winning isn't everything," says Kenneth Barish, a scientist who studies kids' feelings and behavior. "The more important thing is to let kids know that we're proud of them — not for winning, but for their effort. Praising effort has amazing benefits. It makes it easier for young people to try new things without fear, learn from mistakes, and take on new challenges with a positive attitude."
But some people worry that giving awards to everyone sends the wrong message. In real life, people are not always rewarded for just showing up. After all, you don't get an A just for going to class. Participation awards, some say, could teach kids to expect awards when they aren't deserved.
So what do you think? Does everyone deserve a participation award? Or is it time to toss them aside for good?
(1)、What's the writing purpose of the first paragraph?A、To share a competitive game. B、To compare two kinds of awards. C、To show the reactions to the awards. D、To introduce the participation awards.(2)、What can be learned about participation awards from paragraph 2?A、They were introduced to make sports safer for young players. B、They were created in the first youth sports leagues in the 1900s. C、They were aimed at making the games less competitive than before. D、They were the only way to remove concern about the safety of sports.(3)、What does Kenneth Barish intend to convey?A、The limitations of winning the game. B、The applications of praising the effort. C、The significance of developing the teamwork spirit. D、The importance of forming a healthy view of effort.(4)、What's the author's attitude towards participation awards?A、Supportive. B、Objective. C、Doubtful. D、Indifferent. -
15、In a world where ever-changing high-end techniques are reshaping the lifestyles of "Generation Z", a game named Black Myth: Wukong, with its picturesque settings and Chinese culture genes, has brought about a craze among gaming fans worldwide.
Within 10 hours of its official release globally, the Triple-A game had over two million players on Steam. The unexpected success of the game, developed by a private Chinese company over six years, has allowed people to appreciate exotic (异域的) Chinese traditional culture in addition to the fun and joy of playing the game.
Wukong, or Monkey King is an iconic figure from Journey to the West — a Chinese classic novel dating back about 500 years. Feng Ji, the game's producer, said that the game is good enough in quality to attract gamers to be absorbed by the Chinese god-evil story. An ongoing hot discussion on Reddit's online game community shows games are "hardworking" on every detail of the novel.
Games combining iconic cultural elements may be regarded as a form of cultural exchange. Indeed, enjoying the game could be a journey to experience the beauty of Chinese culture — its music, landscapes, architecture, clothes, or even folk tales. "Traditional culture is right there, and you'll like it when you see it," said the game's art director, Yang Qi. "What we can do is to give people a closer look through the game."
China's abundance of well-preserved historical buildings offered the domestic game developer an advantage. Digitally scanning ancient buildings to present them in the game is more cost-saving and provides a better authentic experience. Of course, a game is a game. China will always welcome travelers from around the world who want to explore and learn more about its profound culture.
As a Reddit user wrote, "I (American) have been waiting so long to have more Chinese influence in the Western game field. Chinese culture and mythology are rich. I hope we can get more stuff like this. I would love to go to China someday."
(1)、What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A、The release of the game. B、The contents of the game. C、The developer of the game. D、The popularity of the game.(2)、What are games discussing on Reddit's online game community?A、The plots of Journey to the West. B、The hard efforts of the producers. C、The pleasure of playing the game. D、The details of Chinese gaming culture.(3)、According to Yang Qi, what's the relationship between the game and traditional culture?A、Traditional culture must be modernized for the game. B、The game helps people better experience traditional culture. C、Traditional culture is too complex for full game presentation. D、The game only uses a bit of traditional culture for decoration.(4)、What's a suitable title for the text?A、"Black Myth: Wukong": The Rise of China' s Gaming Industry B、"Black Myth: Wukong": A Cultural Bridge in the Gaming World C、"Black Myth: Wukong": A Transition from Novel to Gaming Field D、"Black Myth: Wukong": Technological Advancements in the Gaming World -

17、阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头再续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的故事。
It was a weekend. I had already planned to hang out with my friends. However, my mother called after work, her voice filled with childlike excitement. She explained that her company was having a spring outing the next day and asked if I could stop by the bakery on my way home to buy her a bag of coconut bread for lunch.
Without even thinking, I refused, telling her I couldn't spare time because I had already made plans with my friends. She bargained with me for a long time, insisting that it's just buying a bag of bread — it wouldn't take long or delay me. She was almost angry by the end of it, so I reluctantly (勉强地) agreed.
But as soon as I saw the bakery from a distance, my heart sank. The store was packed, with a long queue snaking all the way outside. I couldn't help but groan (叹息) hopelessly. As the line inched forward, I kept checking the time, standing on tiptoe to look ahead, dizzy from hunger. I couldn't understand my mother — why wouldn't she just stay home and rest on a weekend? Spring outings were for kids!
Just then, someone behind me called softly, "Miss."
I turned around, seeing a middle-aged woman I didn't recognize. Annoyed, I asked impatiently, "What?"
Her smile was almost humble. "Look, I'm just one person behind you, but that means I'll have to wait for another batch (一批). I'm buying this for my son — he's going on a spring outing tomorrow. I still need to rush home to cook dinner and take him to his tutoring class. If you're not in a hurry, I was wondering if…"
"Who are you buying for?" she asked.
Without hesitation, I answered, "For my mom. She's going on a spring outing tomorrow." For some reason, as soon as I said that, the entire bakery fell into silence. All eyes turned toward me.
