Every summer he came to our village on his cycle. The cycle was full of coconuts and on the handle was his small red money purse and the knife that he used to cut the coconuts. He was known for his toothless smile that tended to tum into a slight laugh.

He often announced the arrival of summer by standing under our village's Gulmohar tree. During the first touch of summer, red flowers fell on the ground and welcomed him to out village; soon the red flowers turned into long sword-like fruits which hung above his head as he cut the coconuts.

He never ate anything except paan (a kind of leaf), which he always could be seen chewing, and he just sat under the tree until someone approached him. Then, he would choose the best coconut, and with expert skill, carve it so that the person could drink the satisfying liquid.

Nowadays, he doesn't do much business. Kids no longer care for coconut water; they want soft drinks. I know his weak body will fail him in the coming years. He will not visit our village, and with him, all my memories of summer will disappear. No one will miss him apart from the Gulmohar tree, his only friend.

My friends and I have stayed in the same village our whole life. Now, in our mid-thirties, we don't have time to talk about our childhood and the life beyond the chains of society.

I've made up my mind. Tomorrow I will talk with him. I will listen to him and preserve him in my memory. I will tell him how important he was for me, how he defined summer for me, and, during every summer, how he nurtured (滋养) me with the coconut water, which was filled with his love. I will take in his smile one last time—a remembrance of my childhood innocence. I will hug him until my tears mix with his.

Chinese Dual Language Immersion Program (CDLIP)

Dual language immersion provides academic instruction in two languages. The Pasadena Unified School District currently offers a Chinese-English immersion program.

    Our Classrooms

The CDLIP serves primary school students, from kindergarten through second grade. Grades 3, 4 and 5 will be added in September of 2022, 2023 and 2024, respectively. The program is currently located at Luther Burbank Primary School. On any given day, you might find a classroom full of kindergarteners counting and sorting coins, first graders singing "The More We Get Together", or second graders describing physics experiments-all in Chinese!

    How Does the Program Work?

CDLIP classrooms combine native and non-native speakers so that all students may succeed in both Chinese and English. We apply a Two-Way 90:10 Model. In kindergarten, 90% of the day's instruction is in Chinese and 10% is devoted to improving English oral language and the ability to read and write. As children progress through grade levels, the percentage of English instruction gradually increases, finally achieving a 50:50 split by fifth grade.

    The Voice of Rigo

Rigo had a loud voice. People were always telling Rigo to be quiet. His mother would tell him to use his quiet voice inside the house because the baby was asleep. His father would ask him to speak quietly in the car so that he could concentrate on his driving. His teacher would tell him to talk quietly so he would not bother others who were studying.

Not only did he have a loud voice, but Rigo liked to talk a lot. Whenever he had time, he would talk with his classmates, sharing everything he considered fun. He liked to yell and shout. Sometimes he just yelled. "Hey!" for no reason. He liked the sound of his very loud voice for he thought it had more penetrating (穿透的)power than that of an actor. But not everyone felt the same way.

When Rigo shouted goodbye as he left for school, his mother shook her head, "Rigo! Be quiet!" When his father drove him to school. Rigo said, "Hey! There's Chris ! " He pointed at his friend, who was walking to school. His father shook his head."Rigo, use a quiet voice in the car." At school, his teacher talked to him three times about using his quiet voice. His classmates shook their heads, throwing an upset look at him when he talked aloud.

Later, Rigo had to sit by himself for a while. His teacher wanted him to practice being quiet. Rigo had to sit quietly for five minutes. It felt like five hours or five days. When the five minutes was up, Rigo went to his desk and sat quietly. It was not easy.

After school, Rigo was waiting for his father when he saw Chris again "Hey!'' he yelled. "Chris! Hey! The headmaster was walking by. Rigo was sure he was going to get in trouble for his loud voice. He looked quickly at the ground. Maybe the headmaster would keep walking.

How to make up riddles (谜语)

Riddles are fun to ask and solve. It is a pride to ask a riddle that no one has ever heard before. If you are looking to find such a riddle, it is better to create a riddle yourself.

    Decide on your subject.

While sitting to write a riddle, you have to think of the subject first.  .It is just the concept where your answer lies. For example, if your answer is onion, your subject is an object or a vegetable.

You would have seen riddles of three to four words along with those that are long sentences. So, you have to decide the length of your riddle beforehand. Only after this, you can form a riddle that fits in your imagination. You can keep your riddles short or long. However, the listeners should be able to follow the context without any difficulties.

     Start with the answer.

. For example, let us consider that you are about to ask a riddle whose answer is an onion. Once you know this answer, you can think of the possible ways of forming a puzzle on your own.

    Analyse your answer.

Once you have chosen your answer, you have to brainstorm the possible characteristics (特征)of it..So you can collect the facts like the ability of ice to melt during heating and its freezing chillness. Once you know these facts about your answer, you can add them to your question of the riddle.

    A. Read some existing riddles.

    B. Find the length of your riddle.

    C. The subject does not mean anything complicated(复杂的).

    D. You can find these riddles online and through apps or movies.

    E. For example, let us imagine that your answer for the riddle is ice.

    F. In this article, let us discuss the process of creating one yourself in brief.

    G. Knowing the answer before forming the question is important in riddle creation.

My school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden where there was once only a vacant lot. It was a lot of work, but it was all worth it. I got blisters (水疱)from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.

I learned a lot about gardening and teamwork, and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had done. She spoke with the producer .The producer cheeked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our garden, because many schools planted gardens.

The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie (大草原),we had made a prairie garden. We had been to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, because that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station .In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students.

As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. The reporter interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, the headmaster interviewed us, and explained to him what we had learned through this project.

That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story .It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. We knew that when we saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.

Have you ever made eye contact with a robot? It can be a very strange experience. Scientists even have a name for the feeling: the "uncanny valley"

Now, researchers at the Istituto Italiano di Tccnologia (IIT) in Italy have found that it is more than just a feeling. They ran an experiment that showed how a robot's gaze (注视)can make people think they are socially interactive with a human being.

That experience can slow a person's ability to make decisions. The team asked 40 people to play a video game of "thicken". In the game, each player has to decide whether to allow a car to drive straight toward another car or to turn to avoid a crash. The people were playing against a human-like robot sitting across from them.

During breaks in the game, players had to look at the robot. Sometimes the robot would look back and other times it would look away. As the interactions happened, the scientists collected data on behavior and brain activity.

"Our results show that, actually, the human brain treats the robot gaze as a social signal, and that signal influences the way we're making decisions, on the way we use in the game and also on our reactions." Wykowska said.

The findings could be useful in helping to decide where and how human-like robots might be placed in the future.

    (1)、What does it'll mean in paragraph 2?
A、A strange valley B、A robot's experience C、The research on robots D、Making eye contact with a robot

    (3)、What's the text mainly about?

When a person in the United States gets the COVID- 19 vaccine (疫苗),the person receives a small piece of paper called a "COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card"

It is a piece of paper with the logo of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, and the name and date of the vaccine. Because it is so simple, it could be easy to fake.

Many people in the U.S. are still unsure about getting the vaccine .As universities, workplaces and other places are requiring proof of vaccination, some people are now buying fake vaccination cards without getting a shot.

The Associated Press reports that students and teachers at universities around the U.S. are worried about fake cards. Sellers are using social media apps like Instagram to advertise fake vaccination cards. The prices range from $25 to $200. The AP notes that many college students seem interested in buying the cards. On the site Reddit, one person wrote, "I need one, too, for college. I refuse to be a guinea pig."

It is reported that more than 700 universities and colleges require proof of vaccination. Most schools simply ask their students to take a photo of their card and send it to a school website. Benjamin Mason Meier is a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC. He studies international health policy. He said, unlike some countries, the U.S. is not using a digital system to record vaccine status. He said the U.S. is depending on "a flimsy paper card", and students have told him they knew of others who had used fake vaccination cards. Rebecca Williams also works at UNC. She is a researcher at the school's Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. She said she was not surprised that people were worried about fake vaccination cards. "This is why I think the development of a reliable national digital vaccine passport app is very important" she said.

There is a law that should prevent people from making false vaccination cards. If someone uses the CDC logo without permission, they can be lined and punished by up to five years in prison. The U.S. Department of Justice recently charged a person in California with making fake vaccination cards.

College students who already have the vaccine are criticizing those who would rather spend money to buy a fake than get a free shot. Maliha Reza is an electrical engineering student at Pennsylvania State University, She called those students "dumb". "I' m angry about that," she said. "Like, there is more anger than I could describe now."

(1)、Why do some college students buy fake vaccination cards?
A、They are easy to get. B、Many Americans are still uncertain about getting the vaccine. C、Students have an interest in the fake vaccination cards. D、To get a vaccine shot is expensive.
(2)、Which of the following measures can NOT be used to stop the fake cards?
A、Having a law that should prevent people from making false vaccination cards. B、Developing a reliable national digital vaccine passport app. C、Using a digital system to record vaccine status. D、Having all the students take a photo of their vaccination card and send it to the school website.
(3)、What does the Underlined word "flimsy" probably mean? '
    A、Weak. B、Effective. C、Detailed. D、Professional,
(4)、What might be the writing purpose for the news report?
A、To promote a digital system to record the vaccination shots. B、To explain why theU.S. should prevent making the face vaccination cards. C、The stress the influence of the COV1D-19 vaccination. D、To reduce theU.S. university leaders1 worry about fake vaccination cards.

Early in the morning, I saw my six year-old son fighting with my azalea (杜鹃花) bush. By the time I got outside, he'd broken it. "Can I take this to school today?" he asked. With a wave of my hand, 1 sent him off. I turned my back so he wouldn't see the tears gathering in my eyes. I loved that azalea bush.

I spent most of the day washing and drying clothes. As I finished hanging up the last of my husband's shirts, I hurriedly drove to the school to pick up Jonathan.

By the time I arrived, the teacher took me aside. "I want to talk to you about Jonathan" she said. I prepared myself for the worst. Nothing would have surprised me. "Did you know Jonathan brought flowers to school today?" she asked. I nodded, thinking about my favorite bush and trying to hide the hurt in my eyes.

"Let me tell you about yesterday" the teacher insisted,"See that little girl?" I watched the bright-eyed child laugh and point to a colorful picture on the wall. I nodded.

"Well, yesterday she was almost crazy. Her mother and father are going through a divorce. I watched that little girl bury her face in her hands and say loud enough for the class to hear, ‘Nobody loves me.'I did all I could to comfort her, but it only seemed to make matters worse.

"Today your son walked straight over to that child. I watched him hand her some pretty pink flowers and whisper, ‘I love you.'"

I felt my heart swell with pride for what my son had done. I smiled at the teacher.
