I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten­dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs Pollock's Grade Two class. Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess(放假)during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough, and he didn't have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat!I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.

It was a beautiful morning. As usual I prepared myself for office, locked my room and stepped outside from my hotel. I saw two poor kids under a tree(stare) at people. I could see the light in their eyes, as they were(silent) watching people. I went to them and asked why they were sitting there and where their house(be).

John and I both know we should never13 a person's clothes for the real person within them. But it is meaningful to14 a standard of excellence for the world to see, to practice a standard of excellence in thought, speech and behavior, and to15 what is on the inside with what is on the outside. 

No one likes to fail. Whether it's at work, at home, or in another area of your life, failure is painful and it can also be costly in terms of time, money, or both  If you never suffer a failure, then you're probably not pushing yourself to your full potential. The following are some tips on how to pick yourself up after you've failed. 

Remember that other people fail too. They'll tell you about that great new contract(合同) they signed, not the deal that failed eventually though they worked on it for months. But failure is normal, and lots of people fail time and time again before meeting with success. 

Remind yourself of your past successes. Failing doesn't mean that you're worthless, or that you'll never achieve the things you want.. Maybe you had high marks last term, or you lost weight, or you learned to play a musical instrument. You might want to write down a list of successes—things that you've accomplished over the past few years, whether big or small. If you ever lack confidence, you can go back and read over that list. 

Your past successes are important, but so are your past failures. You've made mistakes before, and you've survived them. Perhaps you did badly in an exam, or lost your temper and had to apologize. It's not fun to think about the times when things went wrong, but by acknowledging your failures, you can remind yourself that today is no different. Just as you recovered in the past, you can recover from your recent failure too. 

Whatever goes wrong, you're probably facing some sort of decision. Don't rush into making a hasty decision, but do look for a forward path. That might require some deep thinking.

Today our lives are filled with glass, metal, plastic and fibre-glass. We have televisions, cellphones, heaters, ovens, air-conditioners, cars and computers. 

Struggling through traffic that evening at the end of a tiring day, most of it spent indoors, I thought: before long, I would like to live in a small cottage. There I will grow vegetables and read books and walk in the mountains. I may become an old man there, and wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled and measure out my life in coffee spoons. But I will be able to walk outside on a cold silent night and touch the moon.

Desiree, a 4-year-old girl, was sobbing quietly over her father, Ken, who had died nine months earlier. She was hugging a photograph of her father with her fingers running around his face. "Daddy", she said softly, "Why won't you come back?"

Instead of gradually adjusting to her father's death, Desiree refused to accept it "Daddy will be home soon," she'd tell her mother. "He's at work." When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father "I miss you, Daddy," she'd say. "When will you come back?" Desiree's situation made her mother worried.

Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid (美人鱼). Desiree and her father had often watched it.

The child's eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken's grave. Then Desiree dictated (口述) a letter to her Dad. "Daddy, Happy birthday, I love you and miss you," she rattled off (快速说). "I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January."

Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree let fly the balloon. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till disappear. "Now Dad's going to write back to me," Desiree said confidently.

Every day since they'd flew the balloon, Desiree had asked her mother, "Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet?" Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.
