Life is about chances, creating them and embracing them, and for me, that was the Olympic dream. As a member of the Australian ski team heading towards the Winter Olympics, I was on a training bike ride. It was a perfect autumn day. I looked up to see the sun shining in my face. Suddenly everything went black. I was fit by a truck. I was badly hurt. I broke my neck and my back in six places was paralyzed from the waist(腰)down. The doctor said，"Janine，you'll have to rethink about your life，because you're never going to be able to do the things you did before."

Six months later, I got home. I had no feeling from the waist down. I couldn't walk. I had to use a catheter(导尿管)for the rest of my life. All of those totally depressed me. All I wanted was to give up.

Maybe being at rock bottom is actually the perfect place to start.

One day, sitting at home in my wheelchair, I saw an airplane fly overhead. I looked up and thought to myself," That's it! If I can't walk, I might as well fly. " So I went to a flying school and a man named Andrew started to train me. People there used to look at me and think, "Oh, who is she kidding? She's never going to be able to do this. "But that didn't matter, because there was something inside me burning, which far outweighed my injuries.

Little goals kept me going along the way, and eventually I got my private pilot's license(飞行执照)and became a pilot Then I taught other people how to fly, just within 18 months after I'd left the hospital.

Then I knew for certain that although my body might be limited, my spirit was unstoppable.

Five Ways to Build Self-Confidence

*Walk Faster

One of the easiest ways to tell how a person feels about herself is to examine her walk. People with confidence walk quickly. They have places to go, people to see, or important work to do. Even if you aren't in a hurry, you can increase your self-confidence by putting some energy in your step.

One of the best ways to build confidence is listening to an inspiring speech. Unluckily, opportunities to listen to a great speaker are few. You can fill this need by creating a personal commercial. Write a 30-60 second speech that focuses on your strengths and goals. Then recite it in front of the mirror aloud whenever you need a confidence push.

* Sit in the Front Row

In schools, offices and some other public places, people always sit at the back of the room.. This reflects a lack of self-confidence. By deciding to sit in the front row, you can get over this meaningless fear and build your self-confidence

* Speak Up

During group discussions many people never express their opinions because they're afraid that people will judge them for their saying something stupid.. By making an effort to express your opinions at least once in every group discussion, you will become a better public speaker, more confident in your own thoughts and recognized as a leader by your peers(同龄人)

* Work Out

Along the same lines as personal appearance, physical fitness has a huge effect on self-confidence. By making your body fit and strong. You improve your physical appearance, refresh yourself, and accomplish something positive.

The history of inventions leading up to the modern computer is a story of people trying hard to create machines that complete many tasks automatically, such as adding up large numbers, controlling airplanes in flight, etc. Many of the earliest methods of recording and counting data still remain mysteries (something that is not understood). 

In England you can visit Stonehenge, where a mysterious collection of large stones has stood since 1,500 BC. Scientists have never discovered the stones' purpose. However, by observing the way the sun shines between the stones, many people believe Stonehenge was used to predict the seasons and eclipses (蚀) of the sun and the moon.

Another early method of computing was a brass calculator, which existed in Spain nearly 1,000 years ago. The machine was shaped like a human head, with numbers instead of teeth. The shape became its undoing; some people were afraid the machine was supernatural, and destroyed it. In early recorded history, calculators that used the sun, or objects in the night sky, were developed to be used on ships to explore the world beyond the Tigris-Euphrates Valley of southwestern Asia. One such device, dating from the first century, worked with a system of gears designed to track the orbits of stars and planets. These orbits became the marked routes for ships. 

In ancient Rome and Greece, one of the earliest machines ever used for processing numbers was the abacus. This simple collection of beads has been used for centuries in China and other Asian countries. The abacus is built with columns of beads attached to a rectangular wooden frame. Inside the wooden frame is a crossbar that separates each column of beads into two sections. In the Chinese version there are two beads above the bar and five below. Each column of beads means a different range of numbers. The first column from the right represents ones, the second tens, the third hundreds, etc. By moving beads, calculations are quickly completed. Because values are shown by positions, the abacus is very valuable in teaching arithmetic to blind students. 

Experienced users operate the abacus very quickly. After World War II, a speed competition was arranged in Japan between the fastest calculator operator in the US Army and an employee of the Japanese Post Office using an abacus. The American was defeated easily by the moving beads of his opponent.

Welcome back to school. It is a new year for the Computer Club, and there are lots of things to tell you about, so here goes.

First of all, we have redesigned the school website home page. It is now more interesting, and contains information about updates to the school website. You can now click on the right places to see our new school motto, the information about our 25th School Anniversary and a Chinese version. Why not have a look at it, and tell your friends about it, as well? The school website address is http://school.web/wms/index.html.

Secondly, the 15th Joints Schools Computer Exhibition will be held from the 3rd to the 10th of July next year. The theme of the exhibition is ‘Computer Technology 20 Years from Now'. All participating schools must submit a project proposal (方案) by the 28th of April next year. We want our school to participate in the exhibition, and we will prepare a project proposal for the school to submit before the deadline. If you have an idea for a proposal, please e-mail Kevin Shum or Amy Yale.

Finally, the Computer Club will hold a Get-Acquainted lunch on Saturday, the 20th of September, at 12:30 pm in Room 12. We invite you all to the lunch, and we welcome you to come whether you are interested in joining the Computer Club, or you just want to learn something about computers.

A cheerful panda (call) Bing Dwen Dwen has been chosen as the Olympic mascot for Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. The new Olympic mascot will serve as an ambassador (大使) for winter sports, (bring) joy to those who participate in and watch the Olympic Winter Games. "Bing" (mean) ice and symbolizes purity and strength. "Dwen Dwen" relates to children and means honesty, health, liveliness and loveliness. The mascot represents the strength and willpower of athletes and will help to promote the Olympic spirit.

Reading as a teen leads to success. When teens read more than just their classroom assignments, research clearly shows that they generally do  (good) in school. First of all, the extra reading enlarges their vocabularies. And teens read more serious literary works gain skills in handling complex ideas. Besides, teens can educate(they) in any area of life they are interested in if they are good at reading. Plus, reading also helps them expand their horizons as they learn more about people and the world. 

So this is it—senior high school at last! I'm not outgoing so I'm a little anxious right now. I want to make a good first impression. Will I make any ( friend)? What if no one talks to me? I just had my first maths class at senior high school! The class was difficult, the teacher was kind and friendly. He even told us funny story, and everyone laughed so much! I (find) most of my classmates and teachers friendly and helpful. 

I had driven home to celebrate my 38th birthday with my mother. When I arrived, I found her1 proudly at the kitchen table, a chocolate cake and two boxes wrapped orange ribbon(丝带) in front of her. "Happy birthday! "she said,2 at he boxes. " Open them."

As she knows me better than anyone, she'd gotten me exactly what I wanted-running clothes. I3 her and thanked her and proceeded (接着) to eat the cake.

For me that day came two weeks later, when I drove back for another short visit. I came upon exactly the same4 :my mom sitting at the kitchen table; a chocolate cake resting next to two boxes wrapped in curly ribbon. The ribbon was green this time. That was the only5 "Happy birthday!" my mom said.

How to Do Man-on-the-Street Interviews

The man-on-the-street interview is an interview in which a reporter hits the streets with a cameraman to interview people on the sport.But with these tips, your first man-on-the-street interview experience can be easy.

When your boss or professor sends you out to do man-on-the-street interviews for a story, think about the topic and develop a list of about ten general questions relating to it. For example, if your topic is about environmental problems in America, you might ask, "Why do you think environmental protection is important in America?"

Hit the streets with confidence. Say, "Excuse me, I work for XYZ News, and I was wondering if you could share your opinion about this topic." This is a quick way to get people to warm up to you.

Move on to the next person if someone tells you she is not interested in talking on camera. Don't get discouraged.

Each interview that you get on the street shouldn't be longer than ten minutes. As soon as you get the answer you need, move on to the next person. Make sure that as you go from interview to interview, you are getting a variety of answers. If everyone is giving you the same answer, you won't be able to use it. A safe number of interviews to conduct is about six to ten.

If your news station or school requires interviewees to sign release forms to appear on the air, don't leave work without them.

C. If you don't own a camera, you can buy one.

D. For new reporters, this can seem like a challenging task.

E. To get good and useful results, ask them the same question.

F. That number of interviews should give you all the answers you need.

There is some unwelcome news for students preparing for exams and officers putting in long hours—you don't need that "refreshment break" as much as you may think.

Scientists believed it was not easy for people to continue their work if they felt the need to have a snack or a rest to make them feel better. They argued that the only way to regain willpower is by supplying more energy to our bodies with rest, food or entertainment.

But psychologists have challenged this theory, saying weak willpower is in your head. They found that a person's mindset(理念) and belief about willpower determine how long and how well they'll be able to work on a tough mental exercise. "If you think of willpower as something that's limited, you're more likely to be tired when you perform a difficult task," said Professor Veronika Job. "But if you think of willpower as something that is not easily depleted, you can go on and on."

The researchers led by Mr. Job designed an experiment to test the students' beliefs about willpower. After a tiring task those who believed or were led to believe that willpower was a limited resource performed worse on standard concentration tests than those who thought of willpower as something they had more control over.

Mr. Job said, "Students who may already have trouble studying are being told that their powers of concentration are limited, and they need to take frequent breaks. But a belief in willpower as a non-limited resource makes people stronger in their ability to work through challenges."

The findings could help people who are battling with temptation(诱惑): people following strict diets and doing exercise regularly to lose weight, people trying to overcome addictions, employees facing a tight deadline. Willpower isn't driven by a biologically based process as much as we used to think.
