1、 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How many books have you finished since high school? Between study, work, family, and social lives, trying to find time to read needs more effort than a relaxing hobby. How can you get reading books into your full schedule?
Borrow more books than you can read. Libraries have very large "limits" on books you can take out.Return anything you don't like. Some of the most efficient readers return five out of six books unread. This is not something to be ashamed of.
If you have a whole morning to read, you might hope for more kinds. People who read a lot have something going to suit all tastes.
Try the 50-page rule. If you feel you have to finish all the books you start, you may be stuck in something boring and not read again for weeks. You'll find something else you love more soon.
Don't care about any thoughts about what you "should" be reading. It is OK if you are not so interested in the world's great literature. Read what you want.If you're only reading because you "should" read, then over time, reading will drop from the top of your list down to laundry level or going to the dentist.
A. Read more than one book at a time.
B. You may have trouble deciding what to read first.
C. Here's how to make more time for your favorite books.
D. So go crazy and borrow anything that looks interesting.
E. Quit after a few dozen pages if you're not feeling into it.
F. Reading is one of the most pleasurable activities out there.
G. People don't do well with the feelings of suffering long term.

If you're in the market for a new food or water dish for your cat, you might want to check out Free the Ocean's Bamboo Cat Bowls. These are made of bamboo fibers and rice husks (稻壳) and are more eco-friendly than traditional plastic.
The presence of bamboo—used as a renewable filler—is part of what makes the bowl greener. Bamboo, which is technically a grass, grows 30% faster than trees and as much as 1.5 inches per hour! Not surprisingly, it produces 30% more oxygen and absorbs 35% more carbon dioxide than trees, according to Mimi Ausland, founder of Free the Ocean. "It's a cut-and-come-again plant, which means it can be cropped without disrupting the root ball, reducing carbon giving off when it's harvested."
Rice husk is a byproduct(副产品) of rice production that is a challenge to farmers because it is hard to break down and of no great value. Its use as a filler provides a purpose for an otherwise useless material and, along with the bamboo.
Ausland said, "Plastic cat dishes have bacteria(细菌), which can put your cat's health at risk. Even if pet owners clean them regularly, they cannot be fully sanitized. Plastic bowls are the main cause of cat diseases.
However, the bamboo cat bowl will not leach (渗人) harmful chemicals into your pet's water the way that traditional plastic can and it is naturally free of bacteria.
Cats will like the bowls, as they have low edges. With an easy-to-pick-up handle, they come in four colors.
One customer commented, "My cats prefer these cat food bowls just like me. The cats like the low lip that makes it easy to eat out of. And the fact that they're made of bamboo and that buying them makes a difference to the environment is amazing! And it is easy to wash in the dishwasher."

Yellow is usually the color of happy, joyful emotions. But according to a new study, not all people associate the color with good feelings.
To find out what factors might play a role, researchers tested a new hypothesis (假设): What if people's physical surroundings affect their feelings about certain colors? For example, if someone lived in cold and rainy Finland, would he feel differently about the color yellow from someone who lived near the Sahara Desert?
The researchers looked at color-emotion data from an ongoing international survey of 6, 625 people in 55 countries. The survey asked participants to rate 12 colors on how closely they were associated with feelings including joy, pride, fear, and shame.
The researchers paid particular attention to the data for yellow, and analyzed how different factors—including hours of sunshine, hours of daylight, and the amount of rainfall—were associated with the emotions people reported for the color. The two best predictors(预测物) of how people felt about yellow were the annual amount of rainfall, and how far they lived from the equator (赤道).
Overall, people were more likely to associate yellow with joy when they lived in rainier countries that lay farther from the equator, researchers reported in the Journal of Environmental Psychology. In Egypt the possibility of yellow being associated with joy was just 5.7%, whereas in chilly Finland it was 87. 7%. In the United States, with its mild climate and amber (琥珀色的) waves of grain, people's yellow joy association levels were between 60% and 70%.
The researchers also checked whether associations changed with the season—whether, for example, people in a certain country liked yellow more in the winter than they did in the summer. They found that opinions about the color remained fairly constant all year round—even when the weather changed, the data on yellow-joy associations were as good as gold.
(1)、What did the researchers do before the survey?A、They went to Finland. B、They made an assumption. C、They studied certain colors. D、They analyzed some data.(2)、Which of the following affects people's feelings about yellow?A、The changeable weather. B、The length of daytime. C、The geographical position. D、The amount of snowfall.(3)、How did the researchers carry out the survey?A、By interviewing participants. B、By studying the data collected. C、By traveling around the world. D、By looking at color combinations.(4)、What can be the best title for the text?A、Yellow: The Color of Good Feelings B、Color: An Important Role in Joy C、Yellow: Connected with Joy Conditionally D、Color: Associated with Emotions -

I've just arrived from New York City at the airport in Rome and already I'm lost, wandering left and right and searching for the right exit. I'm supposed to meet my wife Elvira, who lives in Italy now, and then drive to Guardia Sanframondi, the little town where we own a house, to meet our newborn granddaughter Lucia, now all of 11 weeks old.
But I takes a wrong turn, and then another, all in vain. I'm lost for 15 minutes, then 30, and finally about 45, unable to get my passport properly scanned and pick up my luggage. This is more than mildly inconvenient. After all, I've just flown more than 4 ,000 miles, a flight into my future.
But suddenly I see Elvira, who is holding baby Lucia in her arms. I'm found.
I stay in Italy for three weeks. It's impossible for me to get enough of Lucia, and so I follow a strict agenda. Hold Lucia in my arms. Kiss Lucia all over her face. Wheel Lucia in her carriage in the most public places available. Make faces at her and even sillier gestures and sounds.
Today, at 70, I'm a permanent resident of Italy, with Lucia living a five—minute walk away. We visit her at her house and she visits us at ours almost every day. In most American families, adult children with grandchildren live in different towns and states far away. Italian families, on the other hand, are more likely to live near each other. Sometimes three generations here even stay together in the same home. I've happily turned my life upside—down to be a grandpa Italian—style. Lucia is just what I need right about now. If I'm lucky, I'll be just what she needs, too.
(1)、Why does the author go to Guardia Sanframondi?A、To meet his wife. B、To decorate his house. C、To explore the countryside. D、To see his granddaughter.(2)、What happened to the author at the airport?A、He lost his way. B、He missed his fight. C、He couldn't find his luggage. D、He had his passport stolen.(3)、What can we infer about the author from the fourth paragraph?A、He gets enough of Lucia. B、He sets a high goal for Lucia. C、He loves his granddaughter. D、He is forced to make Lucia happy.(4)、How does the author feel about the Italian way of life?A、He's worried. B、He's satisfied. C、He's curious. D、He's uncertain. -

16、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had been working in a game reserve (野生动物保护区) in South Africa for many years. Though a part of me longed for the busy familiarity of Paris, I knew my life was in South Africa.
One night there was a sharp knock on my door. I wasn't expecting a visitor. "Francoise? It's me," a woman whispered. I threw open the door. "Amanda? What's wrong?"
Amanda, a thin young woman, was our chef. She motioned for me to come outside. "There's a baby Ellie here."
"An elephant?"
"She's right over there, tiny and terrified."
"It must be ET's baby daughter," I said.
Amanda explained that she'd heard a noise outside her room. She'd taken her flashlight, opened the door and shined it across the garden. A tiny elephant stared back at her, eyes in terror. Not knowing what to do, Amanda had closed the door and climbed out of a back window to call me.
Elephants are fantastic mothers — ET would never leave her baby unattended. Apparently, the baby elephant had somehow slipped under the fence.
Amanda and I had to get her inside the house to keep her safe until we could get her back to her mother. Her frightened eyes stared at us through the leaves. I walked slowly toward the Ellie. She watched me but as soon as I was within touching distance, she ran behind the house. Amanda and I ran after her. Finally, we managed to corner the Ellie in the parking area. She stood completely still, head down and eyes flashing anxiously at any movement or sound. I tried approaching her again, and this time she didn't resist, allowing us to gently get her into my home.
I kept talking to her, telling her she was safe and that we would get her back to her mum. Then I called the reserve center for help and, to our relief, they promised to come right away.

18、 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
As a boy, I spent much time in London. One of the joys was spending weekends(bicycle) to Kew Gardens, famous for housing the world's(large) greenhouses. The importance of the gardens cannot be underestimated— some of the samples(bring) back by Charles Darwin are still alive.
However, it was the pagoda (塔)always fascinated me. Years ago, I went to China. Whenever I'm back to London, I always pay it a visit.
The pagoda was designed by William Chambers, a British architect who had been to China at least twice. The 10-storey octagonal (八边形的) pagoda, which is 163 feet high,(complete) in 1762. Purists, however, argue that pagodas should always, haveodd number of floors. The original building was very colorful and the roofs were covered with iron plates, with a dragon on each corner. The iron plates were later replaced and the dragons(subsequent) disappeared. Since then, there have been several(restoration), mainly to the roofs, but the original colors and the dragons have not been replaced.
Nowadays, being more familiarChinese pagodas, I feel it seems somewhat odd. But for a boy who would later have a quarter century career in China, the Kew Pagoda remains an(inspire).

Just breathe. Sound familiar? Whether trying to decrease stress, anxiety, and muscle tension or increase our focus, we are frequently encouraged to breathe.
There is a good reason for this, particularly when it comes to muscle tension and pain. When we are stressed, our muscles tense, and this tension can increase pain. Pain can also cause stress, increasing muscle tension and creating more pain. Also, it is common to hold our breath when we are stressed or in pain.
So, one helpful way to manage stress and pain is to practice relaxing our muscles and nervous system via breathing exercises. While engaging in longer relaxation exercises is beneficial, practicing brief exercises is practical.
Breathe Slowly and Rhythmically
Imagine your breath is a wave in the ocean that is slowly coming into shore and then slowly going back into the ocean. See if you can practice breathing slowly and steadily for about two to five minutes.
Lengthen the Exhale (呼) Portion of Your Breath
The exhale is like a brake for our nervous system, helping it slow down. Practice making the exhale portion of the breath longer than the inhale: For example, if you naturally inhale to a count of three, practice slowly exhaling to a count of five.
Breathe from Your Belly (腹部)
Belly breathing tends to be the most relaxing type of breath. When you breathe using your belly, you stimulate the vagus nerve which activates the relaxation response. Therefore, you feel at ease and comfortable.
It is important not to wait until tension and pain increase to practice these exercises. So just slow down and breathe on.
A.Practice breathing in and out at a slow speed.
B.Unfortunately, doing so increases pain and stress.
C.The exhale part of the breath is the most relaxing.
D.Breathing from your nose only helps you calm down.
E.Physical pain and emotional stress often go hand in hand.
F.They will be most effective when you are not in much pain.
G.This will reduce your heart rate and blood pressure and lower stress.
