Recently I rolled into a local restaurant to try an Impossible Burger, an all-plant patty(人造肉饼) invented by Impossible Foods. It' s well known for having an strangely chewy(有咀嚼感), even bloody, meat-like quality, a surprising verisimilitude(逼真) that has made it " perhaps the country' s most famous burger," as New York magazine wrote. One bite into its wonderful, smoky taste and, damn, I was convinced. 

This is good news, because the time has come to consume fake meat. In the fight against climate change, meat replacement is something we can try. A University of Oxford study recently found that, to keep global warming below 2 degrees this century, we need to be eating 75 percent less beef and 90 percent less pork. 

However, diets are culturally enshrined, so changing them will be hard. It isn' t easy to replace 75 to 90 percent of beef and pork with fake meat. The first taste of an Impossible Burger—a moment when low expectations work a powerful magic in the product' s favor—is one thing. But how do you keep meat-eaters asking for more after their sixth, and their 26th？

To get to true mass adoption, fake meat will need to compete favorably with the real thing on multiple fronts. Impossible Foods' goal is to drive the price of its product below that of Safeway' s 80/20 hamburger meat, at which point people will simply vote with their wallets. The new industry also wants to improve on animal flesh in various ways. Fake meat has an advantage over traditional meat because " you won' t need to refrigerate it" cofounder Niko Koffeman says. Plus, custom(定制的) production could improve choice. " You could have very soft and tender meat for elderly people," Koffeman adds. " You could have a tailored meat for whatever you need. " 

You can tell the world is shifting this way, because the ranchers(牧场主) are nervous. Last year, the US Cattlemen' s Association asked the government to define " meat" as a product " coming directly from animals. " That anxiety—and the power of the science driving it—goes to show that this grand shift isn' t impossible. 

You have probably read about robots replacing human labor as a new era of automation takes root in one industry after another. But a new report suggests humans are not the only ones who might lose their jobs. 

In New Zealand, farmers are using drones(无人机) to herd and monitor cows and sheep, taking up a position that highly intelligent dogs have held for more than a century. The robots have not replaced the dogs entirely, Radio New Zealand reports, but they have appropriated(盗用) one of the animal' s most powerful tools: barking. The DJI Mavic Enterprise, a $3,500 drone favored by farmers, has a feature that lets the machine record sounds and play them over a loudspeaker, giving the machine the ability to act as the dogs. 

Corey Lambeth, a shepherd on a farm, told RNZ the machines are surprisingly effective. " That' s the one thing I' ve noticed when you' re moving cows that the old cows stand up to the dogs, but with the drones, they' ve never done that," he said, noting the drones move cows faster, with less stress, than the dogs do. 

The drones come in handy for more than just herding(放牧) cows and sheep. The robots allow farmers to monitor their land from afar, monitoring water and feed levels and checking on the animals' health without disturbing them. Jason Rentoul told RNZ that a two-hour herding job that used to require two people and two teams of dogs could be accomplished in 45 minutes using a single drone. " Being a hilly farm where a lot of stuff is done on foot, the drones really saved a lot of man hours," he said. 

For now, farmers say, there is still a need for herding dogs, primarily because they have a longer life span than drones, can work in bad weather and do not require an electrical socket every few hours to recharge. 

Growing up, I thought math class was something to be endured, not enjoyed. I disliked memorizing formulas(公式) and taking tests, all for the dull goal of getting a good grade. One of my teachers told my mother that I was " slow" . But my problem wasn't with math itself. In fact, when a topic seemed particularly interesting, I would go to the library and read more about it. 

By high school, no one told me that I could become a professional mathematician. What I wanted to do then was to play college football. My ambition was to get an athletic scholarship to attend a Big Ten school. 

The chances of that happening were very low. But that didn' t stop my coaches from encouraging me to believe I could reach my goal, and preparing and pushing me to work for it. They made video tapes of my performances and sent them to college coaches around the country. In the end, a Big Ten school, Penn State, did offer me a scholarship. 

I wish math teachers were more like football coaches. Students are affected by more than just the quality of a lesson plan. They also respond to the passion of their teachers and the engagement of their peers, and they seek a sense of purpose. They benefit from specific instructions and constant feedback(反馈). 

Until I got to college, I didn't really know what mathematics was. I still thought of it as laborious(耗时费力的) calculations. Then my professor handed me a book and suggested that I think about a particular problem. It wasn't easy, but it was fascinating. My professor kept giving me problems, and I kept pursuing them, even though I couldn' t always solve them immediately. The mathematical research I was doing had little in common with what I did in my high school classrooms. Instead, it was closer to the math and logic puzzles I did on my own as a boy. It gave me that same sense of wonder and curiosity, and it rewarded creativity. I am now a Ph. D candidate in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 The Roman Colosseum was built almost two thousand years ago. Despite its age and a 14^th century earthquake that knocked down the south side, most of the 150-some foot building is still standing. Scientists and engineers have long suspected a key to the building' s durability (使用年限) is the use of a specific Roman concrete. But exactly how this solid concrete has contributed to the architecture' s strength has been a mystery to researchers across the globe.  

 A team of researchers recently discovered a potential answer to why these ancient Roman buildings have been able to weather the test of time while many modern concrete structures seem to fall apart after a few decades. The answer is self-healing concrete.  

 The material has three components: limestone (石灰石), volcanic material and water. What the researchers found was that the self-healing feature might be simply caused by chemistry accidentally. The limestone in the concrete is likely the secret.  

 When the ancient Romans made mortar (灰浆), they heated up the lime to turn it into a substance called " quicklime" . And, because they introduced water to the quicklime during mixing, the heat it produced set up a chemical foundation that could strengthen the concrete later. When tiny cracks start to form later, the quicklime stops them from becoming bigger. When it rains, the lime reacts with the water to recombine as various forms of calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), quickly filling the crack or reacting with the volcanic ash to " heal" the material.  

 For materials scientist Ainissa Ramirez, this new understanding of ancient Roman concrete is a welcome discovery. " This is one way that the material can be more environmentally friendly," says Ramirez. " It' s sort of like a message in a bottle. The Romans made the material. We had to kind of figure out how they did it so that we can make better materials — and then, you know, in turn, be better protectors of our environment. "  

 Money Daniels spends several hours every week cleaning up cans and bottles in the rivers near his home with other teen environmentalists in Chattanooga, TN. Together, they have collected more than 1 ton of aluminum cans, nearly 1,000 cans a week for a year. In January, he co-founded a club called the Cleanup Kids with his best friend. The project' s mission: to encourage kids to pick up 1 million pounds of trash across the globe before the end of the year.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was very unfriendly to them.

The day of the race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted, he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with him from behind. Ali crashed to the ground.

The English Club

Deng Yaping, who has set .  example to table tennis players all over the world, was born in 1973, in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. It was her addiction to the sport  led to her playing table tennis when she was only 5 years old. Four years later, she won her provincial junior championship. At the age of 13, she won her first (nation) championship and beat other (competitor) in all kinds of competitions in the following years. She had won 18 championships by the time she retired(退役) from sports at the age of 24. Deng Yaping is regarded as one of the . (amazing) players in the history of sport. 

However, compared with other athletes, it seemed (extreme) challenging for her to achieve her dream. At first, she (refuse) by the Henan Provincial Team just because she wasn' t tall enough. Her path to success was filled with many other challenges,  none of them stopped her. She practised even harder and finally made to the top. Her great determination and mental (strong) have inspired thousands of people. Now, she has become a living legend in the sports field at home and abroad. 

When I was a young Dad, my family was struggling just to get by. I was getting a few days' work here and there as a substitute(代课的) teacher. I was teaching every 1  and every grade. Then near the end of the school year I got 2  at the last second to teach at a local grade school.

There are so many ways to explore in regard to finding new happiness. Below you' ll find some tips to help you find your idea of happiness. 

Find a new hobby. When it comes to hobbies, the possibilities are endless. You can be as adventurous, creative, or outgoing as you want. You can try out a new hobby alone or with friends. Hobbies can help reduce stress and put our focus on what is fun and different. 

Put yourself first. A lot of people forget to take care of themselves because of a busy work schedule, marriage, kids and family. But remember when you put yourself first, your happiness will shine through for sure. 

 This way, you can not only be your best self but also possibly take better care of people around you. 

Exercise. Not everyone is a fan of exercise, but it does have so many benefits.  All it takes is 30 minutes of movement to gain those "feel-good chemicals" to better your mood(心情) and health. 

Eat a balanced diet. There is a relationship between food and mood.  A healthy balanced diet will make you stronger and happier. If you eat poorly, your organs(器官) will react negatively. As a result, you suffer from illnesses or have mood swings—you anger easily and find it hard to concentrate. 

 Having a good support system is known to help improve our well-being. Unfortunately, not everyone means well. So it' s important to be aware of that and make it your priority only to allow people beneficial to your mental health in your life.

Thanks to the hard work of companies like California-based Orbital Assembly Corporation(OAC), space tourism is well on its way to coming true. Now, the company is working to offer a chance for space visitors to "get out of the world" by checking into the world' s first true hotel in low Earth orbit(轨道)．

The 650-foot-wide Ferris-wheel-like Voyager Space Station(VSS) will be made up of two rings connected together. The inside circle will be fitted with spacecraft stations for guests while the outside ring will house the rooms, restaurants, bars, gyms, and scientific research labs. The hotel which is powered by the sun will travel at high speed to create artificial gravity(人造重力), providing tourists a comfortable stay. When completed, it will have rooms for up to 400 people. 

While the idea is attractive, making VSS a reality will take time and money. The team is now building a smaller prototype(雏形) ring. Once finished, OAC engineers will attempt to create artificial gravity. Transporting the VSS to space will cost thousands of millions of dollars. However, OAC believes that they will recoup the money by asking $5 million per person for each 3-day stay. Though the cost may seem too high, it is cheap compared to the 55 million it costs to stay on the ISS(International Space Station)．Besides, guests at the Voyager Station will be living in the greatest conditions. 

"You' re going to have the top cooks making really good food, " Orbital CEO John Blincow told the Washington Post. "There' ll be two shows every night as well. " Visitors will also be able to take part in the activities that are not possible on Earth such as spacewalks which allow visitors to admire views of Earth and space. 

If everything goes according to plan, the company plans to start work in 2026 and welcome the first visitors in 2027. "If you are eager to be among the first, you can pay an amount of money to save your place ahead of time, " added John Blincow. 

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally(心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia. 

The study used information collected from more than 28, 000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV, Netflix or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as "I start most days thinking that I will have a good day", they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale(等级)．

Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators(消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys. 

What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn' t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally. 

"The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers, " the study said. "While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic(学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results. "
