5、12 years ago, I first realized plastic was a serious matter for the Earth during a road trip in Western Australia. We1 at a supermarket along the coral Bay coast to buy some food and the cashier told us they didn't sell any shopping bags in order to prevent plastic being thrown in the2 and to help preserve the endangered turtles (海龟) living in that area. After a first reaction of surprise, we3 all our shopping in our arms and left.
This was just one of the many experiences that made me more4 about my impact and pushed me to5 in a more environmentally friendly way. The trip to Borneo was another life changing6 that has strengthened my decision to live a zero-waste lifestyle. While traveling in some African countries, we came to know that7 drinkable water was always a challenge. So we had to travel with our water bottle, and we8 to avoid using plastic during our trip.
Besides, we were also9 impressed by our stay on Libaran Island. There was a turtle preservation10 and the group had made big efforts to11 the beaches and creatively reuse plastic for ten years. Despite that, the coast is12 daily with tons of plastic coming from the tides (潮汐).
Facing this global issue13 gave me a feeling of sadness and anger and it soon turned into14: to do as much as possible to reduce plastic in my life. Small changes can15 a difference!

6、Ways of Studying and Learning Efficiently
Choose a quiet place to study without distractions. The more time you spend studying, the more you'll learn and the better grades you'll earn. So remove all distractions (cell phones, television, loud/fast-paced music, and talkative friends/family members), to ensure a calm, focused environment.
Take short breaks from studying. So plan to take a 10-minute break after each hour. If you get stuck on a certain topic, that's a good time to take a little break so you can come back refreshed. Set a timer on your phone or another device so a short 10-minute breather doesn't turn into 30 minutes of delay.
Reading books that challenge you can expand your vocabulary and comprehension skills, which is useful when a teacher assigns linguistically (语言方面的) difficult texts. If you are not already an active reader, start at your level and work your way up.
Study for quizzes and tests early. If you have a big test coming up, start studying a few days to a week before the test, or even when the test is announced. Make a study schedule, breaking up your time into sections, and stick to it.
Create mind maps of topics to help you learn new things. Mind-maps help you make connections between old and new information. This practice is especially useful when you need to brainstorm ideas for big projects. To create a mind map, write the topic in the center, add lines that point in different directions, and write your ideas on top of the lines.
A. Remind yourself of your goals to stay motivated.
B. Read as much as you can to expand your vocabulary.
C. Your brain needs time to rest and digest information.
D. But the quality of your study time needs to be efficient.
E. These connections provide new contexts so you remember facts better.
F. Find time to study when most of your friends are doing something else.
G. Studying the night before a test doesn't allow you to fully absorb information.

7、For the first time, scientists have recorded brain activity in a wild sea animal, disclosing the sleep habits of elephant seals (象海豹) during the months they spend at sea.
The new findings, published on April 20 in Science, show that while elephant seals may spend 10 hours a day sleeping on the beach during the reproductive season, they average just 2 hours of sleep per day when they are at sea on months-long food-searching trips. They sleep for about 10 minutes at a time during deep, 30-minute dives (潜水), often moving downwards while fast asleep, and sometimes lying still on the seafloor.
Elephant seals are most easily hunted by predators (捕食者) such as sharks and killer whales when they are at the surface in the open ocean, so they only spend a minute or two breathing at the surface in between dives. "They're able to hold their breath for a long time, so they can go into a sound sleep on these dives deep below the surface where it's safe," said Kendall-Bar, the first author of the study.
Kendall-Bar developed a system (EEG) that can record brain activity in wild elephant seals during their normal diving behavior at sea. In addition to the system, the seals carried time-depth recorders, accelerometers, and other instruments that allowed the researchers to track the seals' movements along with the corresponding brain activity. With data on brain activity and diving behavior from 13 non-adult female elephant seals, including a total of 104 sleep dives, Kendall-Bar developed a computer program for identifying periods of sleep based on the dive data alone.
Williams called Kendall-Bar's work on the project an excellent achievement. "It's an amazing feat to pull this off," she said. "Kendall-Bar used the dive data to create data-driven animations so we can really imagine what the animal is doing as it dives."
(1)、What can we learn of elephant seals during the food-searching season?A、They spend 2 hours daily on sleeping. B、They sleep 30 minutes during each dive. C、They spend 10 minutes daily on diving. D、They sleep 10 hours daily on the beach.(2)、Why do elephant seals spend little time at the sea surface?A、To look for more food. B、To avoid being attacked. C、To keep their brain active. D、To get more sound sleeps.(3)、What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?A、The process of the study. B、The purpose of the study. C、The function of the EEG system. D、The importance of the EEG system.(4)、What's Williams's attitude towards Kendall-Bar's research?A、Curious. B、Worried. C、Positive. D、Doubtful. -
8、Is this text AI-generated? That question crops up a lot these days. Computer software to flag AI-generated text exists. But most programs share one crucial weakness, says Jun Jang: no sense of style. His new software hopes to fill that gap.
Jun's program takes note of a writer's stylistic characteristics. It can then use those characteristics to check if another text was written by the same person. Jun says his project was motivated by seeing students admit using AI tools on classroom assignments.
But relying too much on these tools can erode someone's creativity. It can also harm their ability to work out problems themselves, Jun says. And young people are most at risk. "I figured that by me making an attempt to solve this issue, I could help millions of teachers as well as maybe help kids become more creative and spark more innovation." Jun says.
AI use for homework is not rare. The Turnitin program is an existing tool to check who wrote a piece of text. In the first year it was available, it analyzed more than 200 million student papers. Last year, it reported evidence that some 11 in every 100 papers it reviewed had used AI for at least a fifth of their text. Three in every 100 papers used AI for four-fifths of their content.
"That's absolutely no surprise," Jun says. Some forms of generative AI are powerful, game-changing technologies. "Using AI can be good for education, obviously," he says, "But a lot of kids don't use it properly."
Since the release of some AI software, teachers increasingly have had to make hard calls. They must decide whether a student wrote an essay, or just asked a machine to write it. Wrongfully flagging some student's work as cheating would decrease the student's trust in their teacher.
Jun's new program hopes to limit that.
(1)、What does Jun's new software focuses on?A、Text length. B、Content logic. C、Word count. D、Writing style.(2)、What does the underlined word "erode" in paragraph 3 probably mean?A、Build. B、Strengthen. C、Damage. D、Improve.(3)、What does Jun Jang say about students using AI for assignments?A、It is always harmful. B、It can be improperly used. C、It should be banned. D、It promotes true innovation.(4)、What does Jun's new program aim to do?A、Increase students' writing speed. B、Generate more essays for students. C、Teach students to use AI properly. D、Help teachers make right judgments. -
9、Although I'm not a music major, I brought my beloved violin to the United States during this study abroad semester. This violin could not be kept apart from my life.
When I was six years old, I was one of the typical kids who started to learn musical instruments. Parents would hear their young kids shouting, "Mom! I want to learn the piano! Dad! I want to learn the violin!" Well, the difference is, for me, that it was not my free will. Yes, my mom just forced me to play the violin. In the violin school, you could hear the kids crying in the practice room after being scolded (责骂) by their moms. I was one of them. At the time, I hated the violin. However, I started to love the violin when my mom stopped focusing on my relationship with the violin in high school, because her attention naturally changed to my school performance. Maybe she didn't have enough energy to force me to practice anymore.
When I finally got into college, the first thing I did was to register for the campus orchestra. I didn't want to stop playing the violin. The orchestra helped me get involved in such a harmonious, friendly group for the first time while I was playing an instrument. It was my first time meeting friends who have similar hobbies, passion and dreams. I can't forget my first classical concert. I was feeling true love toward the orchestra and the violin. I was extremely excited and I couldn't wait for the next concert. The time just passed as a blink. Two hours felt like 10 minutes.
For everyone, it's never too late to learn to play an instrument. It is really one of the best ways to express one's emotions and communicate it to other people, and I have grown my emotions while being a part of an orchestra.
(1)、What can we know about the author's mother when he was six?A、She loved playing the violin. B、She suffered from a serious illness. C、She cared about the author's grades. D、She forced the author to learn the violin.(2)、What did the author do first when he entered college?A、He changed his major to music. B、He attended a famous violin concert. C、He signed up for the campus orchestra. D、He met friends with similar hobbies.(3)、What does the author think of his first classical concert?A、Impressive. B、Beneficial. C、Ordinary. D、Inspiring. -

13、During my junior year of high school, I wanted to get involved and make a difference in my community. I chose to spend my summer1 at a non-profit organization called "Cradles to Crayons". This organization provides children living in low-income families with2 items like clothing and school supplies to support their growth and daily life. From the very beginning, I hoped my time there would3.

14、The Art of Active Listening
In our busy lives, we often focus on learning how to speak well to express our ideas. Active listening is a skill that can improve your relationships and help you learn better. Here are some tips to become a better listener.
Put away distractions
To listen actively, you must give the speaker your full attention. When you are looking at your screen, you are telling the other person that they are not important. Put your phone in your pocket and look at the person who is talking.
Show that you are listening
Nod your head, smile, and maintain eye contact. Verbal encouragement is also helpful. Simple words like "I see" or "Go on" encourage the speaker to continue. These small signals show that you are listening attentively and following their train of thought.
Don't interrupt
It is natural to want to jump in with your own opinion or a similar story. Interrupting breaks the speaker's train of thought. Wait until they have finished their point before you ask questions or share your views.
Summarize what you heard
When the person finishes speaking, try to repeat the main idea back to them in your own words. You might say, "So, what you are saying is… " It also gives the speaker a chance to clarify if you misunderstood something.
A. However, try to hold back.
B. Use body language to indicate you are engaged.
C. Listening is a natural talent that cannot be taught.
D. However, listening is just as important as speaking.
E. This confirms that you truly understood the message.
F. You should also try to solve their problems immediately.
G. This means putting down your phone or closing your book.

15、As the world's need for electronics grows ever bigger, the other side of the coin — e-waste — is raising alarms. Most of the e-waste was sent to landfills or burned, with possible negative influences on the environment and human health. There's also an amazing economic loss, as $ 62 billion-worth of recoverable resources are lost.
With e-waste rising five times faster than recycling rates, new solutions to the problem can't come soon enough. Aquafade could be one — a fully water-dissolving plastic (可溶于水的塑料) that dissolves completely in about six hours when placed in water. It could be used to pack electronics and dissolved when the electronic is no longer wanted, making it easier to recycle the most valuable parts and reducing the amount of e-waste. "For most electronic products, when they're being recycled, it's the disassembly (拆卸) that's the real trouble, and really needs a large amount of human resources," said Samuel Wangsaputra, one of the inventors of Aquafade.
"One night I was doing the dishes, and I was looking at a dishwasher bag," Wangsaputra said, attracted by the water-dissolving film. "And I thought, where does the film go? So I tried one, just in water, and it fully disappeared." And now Wangsaputra has found a material called Aquafade. It is only applied to the outer shell, making the product water resistant (有抵抗力的) up to five meters for 30 minutes. "But once you take off just one part from the product and you put it in water. Five to six hours later, it will dilute, and what's left is milky water and the most valuable parts of the electronics," said Wangsaputra.
The first commercial application for Aquafade is likely to be as the casing for LED wristbands worn at concerts. While they are currently more focused on single-use electronics, they would eventually like to see Aquafade shells used on all kinds of devices. For now, Aquafade is double the cost of regular plastics, but Wangsaputra said wholesale production will make it cheaper.
(1)、What does the author mainly discuss in the first paragraph?A、The new solution to e-waste. B、The recycling process of electronics. C、Different types of plastics. D、The economic loss caused by e-waste.(2)、What does Aquafade help save in the recycling process of electronics?A、The labor. B、The cost. C、The time. D、The material.(3)、What does the underlined word "dilute" in paragraph 3 probably mean?A、Spread out. B、Break down. C、Hold off. D、Mix up.(4)、What is Samuel Wangsaputra's attitude toward the future of Aquafade?A、Doubtful. B、Cautious. C、Positive. D、Hopeless. -
16、You can't help waking up your teenagers for fear of them wasting their day, but allowing them to sleep longer on weekends may actually be of benefit to their mental health. This is the conclusion of a study by researchers at the University of Oregon and the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, which found that young people aged 16-24 who caught up on lost sleep during the weekend had a significantly lower risk of being depressive.
In the study, participants reported their usual bedtimes and wake-up times on both weekdays and weekends, allowing researchers to work out their "weekend catch-up sleep" — the difference between average weekend sleep and weekday sleep. Each subject was also asked about their emotional well-being. Researchers found teenagers and young adults who made up for lost sleep on weekends showed a lower risk of being depressive.
The scientists recommend that teenagers get between 8 and 10 hours of sleep every night, but agree that perfect sleep schedules are often unrealistic for teens considering school, homework, extracurricular activities, social lives and — for many — part-time jobs. Biology plays a major role in the problem of lack of sleep among teenagers. During the teenage years, circadian rhythms — the body's internal clock — move later, making it harder for teens to fall asleep early. "Instead of getting up early in the morning, you're going to become more of a night owl," Casement, the lead author of the study, explained. "And sleep onset keeps holding over until age 18 to 20. After that, you will get up early as usual again."
"Depression is one of the leading causes of disability among people aged 16 to 24," Casement noted. In this context, disability refers broadly to damaged daily functioning, including difficulty in attending school or work, frequent absences or lateness. "It makes that age range of particular interest in trying to understand risk factors for being depressive and how those might relate to delivery of interventions (干预措施)," Casement added.
(1)、How did the researchers measure "weekend catch-up sleep"?A、By emotional asking. B、By direct comparison. C、By habit observation. D、By time management.(2)、What prevents teenagers from getting enough sleep on weekdays?A、Lack of awareness. B、Early parent waking. C、Late night preference. D、Body clock change.(3)、What can we learn from Casement's opinion from the last paragraph?A、Body clock worsens depression. B、Depression is common in young adults. C、Young depression needs targeted help. D、Weekend sleep cures depression.(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the text?A、Sleep Loss: A Hidden Risk for Teenagers B、Tough Choice: Studying or Weekend Sleep C、Body Clock: Teen Sleep Patterns Explained D、Weekend Sleep: A Benefit for Mental Health -
17、I was standing in line at the grocery store, scrolling through my phone, impatient to get home after a long day of teaching. Ahead of me stood an elderly man in a faded grey coat. His hands trembled slightly as he counted out coins onto the counter.
"I'm sorry," he whispered to the cashier, his voice thin and shaky. "I thought I had enough."
The cashier, a young woman who looked equally tired, sighed. "You're short by five dollars, sir. Do you want to put something back?"
People behind me became impatient. The old man looked at his things: a carton of milk, a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, and a small box of chocolate cookies. He slowly reached for the cookies. "I... I don't need these. They were for my grandson, but..."
I could see how embarrassed he was. Without thinking twice, I walked forward and paid with my card. "I'll pay for it," I said. "Please keep the cookies."
The man froze. He looked at me, his watery blue eyes wide with shock. "No, Miss, I couldn't..."
"It's fine," I smiled, hoping to ease his worry. "Consider it a gift for your grandson."
He tried to speak but choked up. He simply nodded, took his bag, and waited for me outside. When I walked out, he grabbed my hand. "You don't know what this means. My pension (养老金) hasn't arrived yet, and tomorrow is his birthday. Thank you."
A week later, I was back at the same store. As I walked down the passage, a little boy ran up to me, holding a familiar box of chocolate cookies. Behind him was the old man, smiling happily. "He wanted to share one with you," the man said.
That chocolate cookie tasted better than any fancy dessert I'd ever had. It tasted like connection. It tasted like hope.
(1)、Why did the author want to get home quickly?A、She was tired after a day of work. B、She was eager to meet her grandson. C、She didn't like shopping at that store. D、She needed to prepare for tomorrow's class.(2)、What made the old man choose to put the cookies back?A、His own preference. B、Lack of money. C、High price of the cookies. D、The cashier's suggestion.(3)、How did the old man feel when the author paid for the cookies?A、Embarrassed and angry. B、Doubtful and cautious. C、Surprised and grateful. D、Indifferent and calm.(4)、What message does the text mainly want to convey?A、Patience is a virtue in public. B、Kindness can create connections. C、Elderly people need more pensions. D、Family bonds are the most valuable. -
18、For the upcoming school year, Mira Costa High School offers students a wide variety of educational travel experiences. China's "New Four Great Inventions" have reshaped daily life.them, high-speed rail stands out. As the network expands, it is not just connecting cities, connecting people's hearts.
Recently, I took the Fuxing bullet train from Beijing to Shanghai. The journey, which used to take 14 hours, now (take) only 4.5 hours. The speed is astonishing. However, impressed me most was the atmosphere inside the train. Unlike airplanes where everyone wears headphones, here passengers chatted happily.
I met a young entrepreneur who (name) Li Wei. He was returning home after a business trip. "The high-speed rail is my office on wheels," he said, (show) me his laptop. "I can finish a report and still have time to call my mom before arriving." He explained that this efficiency allows him to balance work and family life.
Looking out the window at the blurred landscape, I realized that progress isn't just about speed. It is about (convenient) and human connection. The rhythmic hum of the train felt like the heartbeat of a nation moving forward, yet staying (root) in its culture.
By the time we reached Shanghai, the sunset painted the sky in hues of orange. I stepped off the train feeling grateful for this (technology) marvel that brings people closer. It is more than a train; it is a symbol of China's journey — fast, efficient, and full of hope for future.
