• 1、A new study from UBC Okanagan says students appear to be using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) responsibly, and as a way to speed up tasks, not just improve their grades. Dr. Meaghan MacNutt, who teaches professional ethics (伦理学) in the UBCO School of Health and Exercise Sciences (HES), recently published a study which goes against common concerns about students' use of AI.

Students in three different courses, almost 400 participants, completed a survey about their use of AI on at least five reflective writing assignments. All three courses used an identical AI policy and students had the choice to use the tool for their writing.

While only about one-third of the students used AI, the majority of users, 81 percent, reported their GenAI use was inspired by at least one of the following factors: speed and ease in completing the assignment, a desire for high grades and a desire to learn. About 15 percent of the students said they were motivated by all three factors, with more than 50 percent using it to save time on the assignment.

"There is a lot of speculation (猜想) when it comes to students' use of AI," MacNutt says. "However, students in our study reported that GenAI use was motivated more by learning than by grades, and they are using GenAI tools selectively (有选择地) and in ways they believe are ethical and supportive of their learning. This was somewhat unexpected due to the common view that undergraduate students have become increasingly focused on grades at the expense of learning."

MacNutt says continued research in this area can only provide a better understanding of student behaviour and attitudes as GenAI technologies continue to advance. She also suggests, while AI continues to be used more frequently, that institutions and educators adopt an approach that reflects "collaboration with" rather than "surveillance of" students.

(1)、What can be inferred about Dr. MacNutt's study?
A、Participants were too limited. B、Policies on AI tool usage vary. C、AI is a choice for writing tasks. D、The survey focused on writing skills.
(2)、What was the main motivation for the majority of GenAI users in the study?
A、To improve academic performance. B、To achieve higher grades effortlessly. C、To replace their own writing entirely. D、To gain an absolute advantage over others.
(3)、The underlined word "surveillance" in paragraph 5 means ________.
    A、Ignoring. B、Monitoring. C、Understanding. D、Encouragement.
(4)、What is the significance of Dr. MacNutt's study?
A、It highlights common concerns about GenAI in education. B、It warns that GenAI might encourage shortcuts in learning. C、It proves that GenAI helps students improve their grades quickly. D、It shows that students can use GenAI responsibly to support learning.
  • 2、I'm James. Tired from work, I felt life was boring and I really needed something to change my focus. One night I came across a website recommending scuba (水肺) diving lessons. I hadn't ever thought much about the idea of diving before; but its complete unfamiliarity sparked my interest; I decided to give it a shot! I had my training lessons at an indoor swimming pool. After finishing the courses, I felt very happy and proud for getting over my first fear and discomfort of breathing underwater.

Knowing I hadn't yet experienced what real scuba diving is all about, I spent hours researching where the best places to dive were. Before I knew it. I was on an airplane to Belize. Less than a day after I arrived, and just a few minutes into my first ocean dive. I was already diving straight down and found myself 80 feet underwater. It's the kind of extraordinary water having such great visibility (能见度) that you can see clearly for hundreds of feet around you.

Within minutes our 4-person dive group was surrounded by numerous nurse sharks, a moray eel (海鳗), large groupers and sea turtles. I was madly in love with scuba diving. As we reached the bottom, a lone nurse shark swam right under me. More started to arrive. Just as I was shooting pictures of the action and not paying attention to anything or anyone else around, I looked up to see a bright green threatening face headed straight for me. He wasn't the least bit shy. He had apparently never heard of personal space. After he decided to swim by me without causing any bodily harm, I was both relieved and excited.

This will always be that one special dive that changed everything and I get to watch it any time I find myself missing the water.

When I first moved to the new community, I found it difficult to adapt. Everything was unfamiliar, and I felt like an outsider in a place where everyone seemed to know each other.

One day, I returned from a morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys, only to realize that I had lost them. As all of them are tied together including my car key, I decided to return to the paths we'd taken. I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace (折返) our steps, but the result was disappointing.

Back home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the chair in exhaustion (筋疲力尽). The house key wasn't that important as I had an extra. I had a spare car key, but there was often something wrong with it, and the key would be expensive to replace. The iron heart made by my grandson was precious beyond measure. Thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes.

That night, it turned colder and we had a snow. Suddenly I heard the noise of my car alarm from the garage (车库). I rushed to the car, put the extra key into the door and finally opened it, and then I hurriedly tried my best to stop the alarm. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next-door neighbours being disturbed and annoyed.

I went back in the house but the alarm started again. I turned it off, went back inside, and the alarm sounded again. I repeated the process. Back in the house, I waited, but the next sound was the front doorbell. Thinking it was a neighbour ready to complain at me, I opened the door cautiously(谨慎地). To my surprise, in the light snow stood three neighbours from several streets away.

  • 8、What would you do if you were lost in the wilderness? You have probably read or heard about people who survive under seemingly impossible conditions. These people have been able to survive by focusing on three basic needs: water, food, and shelter.

Water is one of the few substances necessary to sustain (维持) life, but pure water may be difficult to find. Exhaustion (疲劳) will cause you to sweat heavily, resulting in a salt shortage that causes dehydration (脱水). An easy way to collect water is to collect dew (露水) in the morning for water.

Feeling of hunger can be ignored with a positive attitude. Some people have to eat insects, earthworms and other animals that are easy to catch. Plants, however, should not be eaten unless they are not poisonous. Knobby berries, such as blackberries and raspberries, are also simple to identify.

In heavy rains or snow, you can build a shelter with branches and ropes. Use as many branches as possible for added stability and protection against the wind and weather. If you are in a desert environment, try to build an underground shade shelter to avoid sun exposure.

Remember calm is extremely important in any emergency. Find a water source, identify food to gather and find shelter. By focusing on these basics, you can turn yourself into a survivor.

    A. Nuts are easy to identify and are nutritious.

    B. Water can set the line between life and death.

    C. Keep your body temperature as normal as possible.

    D. If there is a shortage of water, do not exhaust yourself.

    E. Protection from extreme temperatures is another concern.

    F. Come up with a plan and don't waste time or energy by getting upset.

    G. But food is another necessity if you are lost for a longer period of time.

  • 9、NASA's Voyage 2 spacecraft, which has been probing (探测) the outer bounds of the solar system for over 45 years, is running out of power. But a new plan aims to keep its mission alive for at least three more years.

The Voyage 2, first launched in 1977, has been helping scientists study faraway planets and understand how the heliosphere (日球层) protects Earth. With Voyage 2's power supply running out, NASA was about to shut down one of its five science instruments on the spacecraft. To keep it going, engineers had already given up heaters and other nonessential parts that used power.

However, engineers have now found a way to use reserve power from a safety mechanism to support Voyager 2. The move will enable the mission to put off shutting down a science instrument until 2026, rather than this year.

Ed Stone, who was the chief scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, has spent over half his life dedicated to the Voyager programme. He said, "What it revealed was how complex the solar system really is. Before Voyager, the only known active volcanoes were here on Earth. And the only known oceans in the solar system were here on Earth. But we have known more since the Voyager programme started."

Voyager 2 and its twin, Voyager 1 (launched the same year), are the only spacecrafts to have ventured beyond the heliosphere. Voyager 2 is 12.3 billion miles away from Earth and counting. Voyager 1, also facing an expiration (到期) date as it also loses power, is 14.7 billion miles away.

"The science data that the Voyager are returning gets more valuable the farther away from the Sun they go, so we are definitely interested in keeping as many science instruments operating as long as possible," Linda Spilker, the Voyager programmes project scientist at the Jet Propulsion Lab said.

NASA, meanwhile, has been working to make sure the Voyager doesn't end up with a slow failure, with officials weighing expensive and complex suggestions from several groups for a new, long-term probe.

(1)、How did NASA react to Voyager 2's power supply running out in the past?
A、NASA regarded it to be normal. B、NASA fixed heaters for engineers. C、NASA shut down its five science instruments. D、NASA tried its best to keep Voyager 2 alive.
(2)、What does Voyager 1 have in common with Voyager 2?
A、They were launched on the same date. B、They have protected Earth for years. C、They are 12.3 billion miles away from Earth. D、They are likely to stop working in the coming future.
(3)、What does Linda Spilker want to convey?
A、Science instruments attract her deeply. B、The Voyagers can't fly farther any more. C、Science instruments on the Voyagers are well worth operating. D、The farther the Voyagers go, the more accurate science data is.
(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A、Voyager 2 Has contributed a Lot to Earth B、NASA Is Keeping Voyager 2 Going Until at Least 2026. C、The Voyagers Will End Up with a Failure D、The Expensive Ways Can't Save Voyager 2
  • 10、A team at the University of California, Los Angeles developed a human-like robot that will take part in an international soccer competition. The name of the robot is ARTEMIS, which stands for Advanced Robotic Technology for Enhanced Mobility and Improved Stability. It stands 142 centimetres tall and weighs 38 kilogrammes.

The researchers said ARTEMIS is one of only a few humanoid robots that can run. It can also jump and walk on different kinds of surfaces without losing its balance. The robot also can kick a ball and remain standing even when kicked or hit. The engineers who built the robot said it can walk at a speed of 2.1 metres per second. This could make ARTEMIS the world's fastest walking humanoid robot.

The team said the goal of the project was to create a robot that can perform many human-like activities, particularly playing the sport of soccer. To do this, engineers said they modeled the devices that control the robot after human muscles. ARTEMIS uses a series of sensors and cameras to help it move and position itself.

Dennis Hong is a UCLA professor of engineering and the director of the university's Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory. He explained in a statement the reason ARTEMIS can keep good balance even when walking and running over uneven surfaces. It is because the robot is "getting both feet off the ground while in motion," Hong said. He added, "This is a first-of-its-kind robot." Another difference between ARTEMIS and other humanoid robots is that it is controlled electrically instead of by hydraulics (水力学). The developers said this makes the robot quieter and cleaner running. Over the next few weeks, they will work on perfecting the robot's soccer playing skills.

One member of the team, student Justin Quan, said his personal goal is engineering robots that can improve people's lives. "Seeing these robots helping push the robot technology to that next level is really rewarding because you're like, oh, the dream, it gets closer," he said.

  • 11、"Every life is a boat, the dream is the boat sail." Every child has a dream of what they want to be. When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer fire fighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father died and she was never able to do volunteer work with him. However, Renee's story didn't end there. She was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.

Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who's sick. Sometimes she is in the driver's seat or using the water pump. Renee works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy fire fighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.

When I asked Renee what the best part of her job was, she replied, "Helping people and saving lives." I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She's always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. "The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes people die in the accident, for which I am very sorry." With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn't bother her. She says everyone can get a fair shot and do the same jobs.

I was inspired by this because I knew I would be very scared to do her job and didn't know if I could handle seeing people die. We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee's determination rubs off on me and makes me believe that I can do anything.

(1)、What happened to Renee when she was fourteen?
A、She got lost in a boat sailing. B、She dropped out of school. C、Her father passed away. D、Her dream to be a firefighter came true.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery(杂货)store downstairs from my house. As a girl of shy nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the busy city life.

One sunny day, my school told us about an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to show their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a sense of curiosity and a desire to join in. However, my self-doubt and anxiety held me back, "I don't have any special skills to share."

Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn't shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. "How about singing together in the talent show?" She smiled, "I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I couldn't help following you here." Gosh, I couldn't believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, praised my little talent. Since Emma had the world's prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.

"You two? The talent show for the food bank?" My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. "A big thing." Then a light smile seemed to go in her head. "Why not practice right now upstairs? I bet you'll be a perfect match." Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.

Emma and I started practicing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed(排练)the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

I8 because life is already hard enough, and it seemed we just couldn't have any good luck. That was our last money. I also felt guilty that my son saw that. I9 to him for not getting his treat, but he said, "It's okay, daddy. I don't need it." Hearing that,10, my heart felt warm.

We had just got to the car when a man who was behind us in11 ran to us with his kids. He gave me the things we left in the store,12 the candy bar, and told me he had paid for everything. We've had some initial assumption about why they had their markings, but we need to confirm the reason for its mysterious pattern.

Viewed up close in a zoo, the giant panda is a strikingly notable mix of a white bear with black shoulders and legs, and an extraordinary face with black fur around the eyes and ears. By comparing with other carnivores (食肉动物), we learned that carnivores with white backs are found in snowy environments, and those with dark legs and shoulders are found in shady habitats. This suggested that the fur was an adaptation to be self-protective in different environments.

Nowadays, giant pandas are kept inside in forests in western China, where they live on their own and there are relatively few predators (捕食者). We are to confirm that the sort of self-protection is effective against giant pandas' former predators from the days when they ranged right across China into Vietnam.

By comparing the amount of light reflected from the giant panda's fur with natural objects in the background, it's clear that their black fur patches (斑纹) match dark shades and tree trunks, whereas their white patches match bright leaves and snow. Also, pale brown, or muddy fur matches the color of the ground. This provides a medium color which bridges the gap between the very dark and very light visual elements in the natural habitat. Besides, a second form of self-protection lies in something termed disorderly colors and patterns-in which highly visible patches break up its outline by mixing with patches in the background.

Giant pandas show this form of defensive outline, especially at longer viewing distances of at least 60 meters away. At these distances, the giant panda becomes hardly identifiable as the black fur patches go with the background, dark rocks and tree trunks.

Although giant pandas in zoos are highly notable to us, it is because we see them up close and surrounded by artificial backgrounds. But when in the wild and at a distance, our research shows that they are beautifully protective to avoid detection.

(1)、How are giant pandas different from most mammals?
A、They have exceptional colors and patterns B、They are more brightly colored. C、They are marked with browns and grays. D、Their dark legs match snowy environments.
(2)、What is the purpose of paragraph 4?
A、To explain the reason for pandas living in the wild. B、To compare the differences of pandas' body parts in color. C、To confirm pandas' color connection to the habitat. D、To conclude the relationship between light and pandas' colors.
(3)、What can we infer about giant pandas from the last two paragraphs?
A、They look darker in the artificial background. B、Their patterns are determined by their backgrounds. C、The effectiveness of defensive colors is related to distance. D、They are more beautifully-colored in the wild than in the zoo.
(4)、What is the author's attitude towards the research on giant pandas' fur patterns?
    A、Favourable. B、Objective. C、Confused. D、Skeptical.

This work is designed to make human behavior comprehensible to everyday readers through artistic depictions of body language across cultures. In these artistic representations of non-verbal communication, we recognize universal human experiences that cross cultural and historical boundaries.

In this "visual guide to body language", artworks are carefully selected and arranged to highlight connections across different periods and societies. We observe scenes of people interacting in various social situations — from formal handshakes in business settings to intimate embraces between loved ones. Individuals are portrayed in numerous positions — leaning forward in interest, crossing arms in defense, or nodding in agreement. Though these artworks might have been created centuries apart, they capture moments of human interaction that remain familiar to us all.

Body language in artworks often serves to reveal the inner world of the subjects — their confidence, anxiety, or social status. Before the scientific study of non-verbal communication, artists intuitively (凭直觉地) understood and captured these subtle signals in their works. In contemporary art, as our understanding of body language has deepened, artists have become more intentional in using gestures and postures as primary elements in their creations — making body language itself the subject matter of their works.

Some might assume that in our digital age of video calls and virtual meetings, the study of physical body language has become less relevant. From a modern perspective, while technology has changed how we communicate, non-verbal communication remains as significant as any emoji or digital reaction. To fully understand human interaction, we must observe the physical dimension: the eye contact, the posture, and the gestures employed during conversation. And compared to our increasingly digital communications where expressions can be hidden, in-person interaction still provides the richest, most immediate understanding of unspoken feelings.

(1)、How does the author start the passage?
A、By quoting an expert's opinion. B、By giving examples. C、By introducing a book. D、By representing research data.
(2)、What can we learn about the artworks in the text?
A、The use of colors in paintings. B、Face expressions and body gestures. C、Family life in different countries. D、How technology changes communication.
(3)、Why does the author mention digital communication?
A、To prove that body language is still important today. B、To explain why video calls are better than meeting in person. C、To show that body language is no longer useful. D、To complain about how people don't talk face to face anymore.
(4)、Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A、The History of Digital Communication. B、Famous Artists and Their Masterpieces. C、How to Improve Your Body Language. D、Understanding People Through Art.

He got this great honor for his "powerful and creative works that show the strength of art even in hard times full of disaster and fear." His life has been an amazing journey closely tied to literature and a love for different cultures.

Krasznahorkai was born in 1954 in Gyula, Hungary. His early life was full of different experiences — he played jazz piano as a teenager and later studied law at college. But literature soon became his real passion. When he was 13, he read the famous book Moby-Dick. He felt a strong connection with Captain Ahab, the main character. This moment played a big part in shaping his imagination for writing.

A special trip in 1991 changed his focus to Chinese culture. At that time, he worked as a journalist and visited China. He was deeply surprised by how rich and colorful Chinese culture was, calling it "the world's last living museum of human culture." This trip started a long-lasting fascination; he began using chopsticks at home, listened to Peking Opera often, and became very interested in Li Bai, his favorite Chinese poet. In 1998, he made his dream come true — he traveled across China to follow the places Li Bai once visited.

Though his works, such as Satantango, are known for their complex and long sentences, they have won praise from readers around the world. Susan Sontag, a famous writer, once compared him to Gogol, another great writer, and said he was a "master of modern Hungarian writing about serious and dark times".
