• 1、Imagine looking through TikTok and seeing famous MrBeast pop up. He says he's giving away brand-new phones. "Click the link below to claim yours now!" Do you click? Maybe. It looks and sounds like MrBeast. But it's actually a deepfake — a false clip (片段) created by artificial intelligence (AI). Last October, this video tricked fans into sharing personal details. But a new tool, AntiFake, could help prevent such scams (欺诈).

An AI model can learn to imitate someone's voice based on about 30 seconds of speech. "It does this by creating something called an embedding. This is basically a series of numbers," says Zhiyuan Yu, a PhD student in computer science at Washington University, whose team built AntiFake.

People recognize voices by paying more attention to some frequencies of sound waves and less attention to other frequencies, but the AI model uses all frequencies to create good embeddings. AntiFake protects voice recordings by adding some noise to the frequencies people pay less attention to. That noise can mess up an AI model's ability to create a good embedding of the voice.

Yu's team picked 600 deepfake clips that fooled both human listeners and voice- authentication (语音认证) systems, and then added AntiFake protection to the 600 voice clips those deepfakes had been based on. Next, the scientists sent the protected files back through the five deepfake AI models. This time, over 95% of the new deepfake samples no longer tricked people or machines.

"This is an interesting and great new tool to defend against deepfakes," says Shimaa Ahmed, an expert who wasn't involved in building AntiFake. "However, if my voice is my job, I'd like to have my voice as it is."

"This is actually a problem we want to address in the future," Yu notes. Instead of adding noise, he thinks AntiFake could change the rhythm or tone of a voice. The voice would sound clear and unchanged to listeners. But it would contain carefully-hidden signals to trick deepfake AI models.

(1)、How does AntiFake help prevent deep lake voice scams?
A、By making AI models' embeddings damaged. B、By making voices sound noisy and annoying. C、By making voice recordings hard to imitate. D、By making voices difficult to identify and record.
(2)、What is Paragraph 4 intended to show about AntiFake?
A、Its development. B、Its effectiveness. C、Its special design. D、Its working principle.
(3)、What's Shimaa Ahmed's attitude to AntiFake?
    A、Objective. B、Disappointed. C、Positive. D、Unclear.
(4)、What does the text mainly talk about?
A、The role of AI models in scams. B、A new tool to prevent voice scams. C、Impacts of deepfake voice scams. D、An innovation for identifying voice scams.
  • 2、Our "Mommy and Me" time began two years ago. My next-door neighbor and fellow mother, Christie, and I were out in our front yards, watching seven children of age 6 and under ride the bikes up and down. "I wish I could take one of my children out alone," said Christie.

Then we worked out a plan: When Christie takes one of her children out, I'll watch her other three. And when she watches two of mine. I'll take someone out.

The children were extremely quick to accept the idea of "Mommy and Me" time. Christie's daughter, McKenzie, went first. When she returned, the other children showered her with tons of questions. McKenzie was smiling broadly. Christie looked refreshed and happy. "She's like a different child when there's no one else around," Christie shared with me quickly. With her mother all to herself, McKenzie didn't have to make an effort to gain attention.

Just as Christie had noticed changes in McKenzie, I also discovered something different in each of my children. For example, I am always surprised when my daughter, who is seldom close to me, holds my hand frequently. My stuttering (口吃的) son, Tom, doesn't stutter once during our activities since he doesn't have to struggle for a chance to speak. And another son, Sam, who's always a follower when around other children shines as a leader during our times together.

The "Mommy and Me" time allows us to be simply alone and away with each child-talking, sharing, and laughing, which has been the biggest gain. Every child deserves to be an only child at least once in a while.

(1)、What was the author and her neighbor's plan?
A、To teach their children how to stay alone. B、To change their own children's bad habits. C、To make a child live in the other home for a long time. D、To help each other spend some time with one child at a time.
(2)、How many children did the author have?
    A、Five. B、Four. C、Three. D、Two.
(3)、After going through the plant the author's sons became          .
    A、braver B、cleverer C、more active D、more selfless
(4)、What can we learn from the text?
A、Every child needs parents' full attention. B、Having brothers and sisters is fun. C、It's tiring to take care of others' children. D、Parents should look after others' children.

I liked things going according to my plans. But lately there had been lots of troubles in my life. My daughter Gabby had a disease, making it difficult for me to focus on my job. One day, I went for a walk on the beach. It was something I'd been too busy to do before. As I slowly walked, looking at the blue sky and sea, my mood gradually lightened.

On my way home, I came across an art supply store. Attracted by the beautiful decorations, I walked inside. I hadn't painted since I was a child, and I had already forgotten what most of the tools were for. Therefore, I decided to leave after a while. Just then, a young man approached and asked whether I needed any help. I wanted to say no and get out of the store. But soon I changed my mind and replied, "I would like to paint, but I don't know what to buy."

"My dad is an artist. I can show you everything you need," the young man offered. He carefully picked out a set of paints and recommended brushes and other necessary things. "Have fun!" he added before I left. "I expect you to show me a painting the next time you come in here."

I smiled weakly. Not likely, I thought. Yet that night, after Gabby went to sleep, I set up the easel (画架) and the tools in the dining room and decided to give it a try. What should I paint? I closed my eyes. Suddenly, I could imagine the blueness of the sky connected with the deeper, darker shades (色调) of the sea. I took a deep breath and began to draw.

I kept painting for the next few weeks. Whenever I felt stressed, I painted, and then I could forget all my troubles. I used my phone to take pictures of my paintings, so I could carry that feeling of peace with me. One afternoon, when I ran out of canvases (画布), I returned to the store to get some more.

  • 10、Cleaning your hands with soap and water washes away bacteria. But the hot-air hand dryers found in many public restrooms seem to blow microbes (微生物) right back onto clean skin. That's what 16-year-old Zita Nguyen found by swabbing (用拭子擦拭) people's freshly washed and dried hands.

Water going through toilets in public restrooms results in the bacteria from human wastes entering the air. That same air is drawn into those wall-mounted electric hand dryers. These machines provide a nice warm home in which microbes can grow well, and cleaning the inside of these machines can be difficult, Zita says. "Freshly washed hands are getting dirtied with the bacteria that grow inside these machines. " she adds.

The idea for her project came from the pandemic (流行病). People stayed at least one meter away from each other to limit the spread of the pandemic. Zita wanted to explore that idea with hand dryers. Would drying hands farther away from the hot-air dryer lessen the number of bacteria that fall back onto the skin?

The teen had four people wash and dry their hands in the restrooms. The participants washed with soap and water. After each washing, they dried their hands using one of three different methods. In some trials, they simply used paper towels. In the others, they used an electric hand dryer. Sometimes, they held their hands close to the machine, about 13 centimeters below it. At other times, they held their hands about 30 centimeters below the dryer. Each hand-drying condition was performed 20 times. Right after this drying, Zita swabbed their hands for bacteria. Then she placed these swabs on Petri dishes for three days in suitable growing conditions.

Afterward, all the Petri dishes were covered with bacteria. Fewer than 50 bacterial colonies (菌落), on average, turned up in each dish exposed to swabs from hands dried with paper towels or from hands held farther from the electric dryers. In contrast, more than 130 colonies, on average, grew in Petri dishes from hands held close to the hot-air dryers.

Zita was amazed by all the microbes in these dishes and realized they represented what covered people's hands after using a hot-air dryer.

(1)、What did Zita Nguyen discover in her research?
A、Public restrooms are full of bacteria in the air. B、Swabbing freshly washed hands is unnecessary. C、Hand dryers can infect clean hands with bacteria. D、Cleaning the inside of hot-air hand dryers is hard.
(2)、What was the inspiration for Zita's project?
A、Her concern over the damage of bacteria to skins. B、Safety distance for people during the pandemic. C、Her curiosity about the structure of hand dryers. D、The medicine of limiting the spread of the pandemic.
(3)、What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A、The process of conducting the experiment. B、The reason for hand-dryers having bacteria. C、The desire for better drying hands machines. D、The result of drying hands with paper towels.
(4)、The number of bacterial colonies in the dishes is related to ________.
A、the application of hand dryers B、the lasting time of swabbing hands C、the growing conditions for bacteria D、the functions of hot-air hand dryers
  • 11、In one apartment in Jos, Nigeria, Wuni Bitrus and a dozen students gathered around a table covered with a toolbox, a 12-volt adapter (适配器), and a mix of colored wires. The students' idea was to build a "smart" door that opens with the touch of a finger.

The students chatted in sign language, and Mr. Bitrus signed back. The group discusses using Arduino, an open-source electronics platform, and one student wondered how fingerprints could be stored. Mindful of Nigeria's electricity problems, Mr. Bitrus advised the group to use a battery-powered keypad lock system first and include a fingerprint feature later. After nodding in agreement, the students excitedly started working.

This is one typical scene in a club run by the Deaf Technology Foundation (DTF), a nonprofit co-founded by Mr. Bitrus. It coaches deaf Nigerian children and young adults in computer programming and robotics which are believed to maintain a rising trend in today's labor market. The students also work to improve their reading skills and receive career guidance.

Mr. Bitrus' desire to change Nigeria's deaf communities was awakened in 2014. While teaching, he noticed a 13-year-old girl was treated unfairly and he became determined to learn sign language. Three years later, he got funded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and established DTF.

One of the darkest memories that Mercy Samson Grimah, a student of the foundation, has about growing up is looking at the faces of people around her. Ms. Grimah says her private secondary school did not formally teach sign language to her, nor much of anything else. But fortunately, she formed a bond with the Deaf Technology Foundation. "I had never touched a laptop before in my life," she says. Now, she wants to become a computer scientist.

So far, DTF has been struggling to keep the dreams of these students alive, as it can only afford two paid instructors and it is difficult to keep up with the growing number of students. DTF intends to take advantage of Nigeria's rapid tech development, joining hands with companies on self-driving car technology and automated wheelchairs to secure its existence.

In a small country school, there lived two close friends named Ray and Toby. Ray came from a wealthy family, while Toby's family struggled to make ends meet. Despite their differences, the two were inseparable and shared a deep bond of friendship. They spent countless hours together, whether it was playing games after school, helping each other with homework, or simply sharing stories under the shade of the old banyan tree.

On a sunny afternoon, Ray brought his precious stamp collection to school, eager to show Toby his latest treasure — a rare (稀有的) stamp gifted by his uncle. Toby, who had never seen such beautiful stamps before, stroked the stamps gently, his eyes wide with wonder. "Such an amazing collection This rare stamp is incredible, Ray!" He exclaimed with admiration. After school, Ray packed the stamps back into his schoolbag and returned home, his heart light with the joy of sharing his passion with his best friend.

However, the next morning, Ray's joy turned to panic when he discovered that the rare stamp was missing. He tore through his room, searching every corner and every book, but the stamp was nowhere to be found. His heart sank as a troubling thought crowded his mind — Toby was the only one who had got up close and personal with the stamps. Could he have taken it?

The next day at school, he confronted Toby with anger. "Did you take my stamp?" he asked directly, searching Toby's face for any sign of guilt. Toby, shocked by his questioning, replied with mixed feelings, "No, Ray! I would never take anything that belongs to you. You're my best friend."

But Ray, consumed by frustration and disappointment, couldn't let go of his doubts. "You were the only one who saw it," he said coldly. "If you hadn't taken it, then where could it be?" Deeply hurt by Ray's lack of trust, Toby turned away without another word, his heart heavy with the weight of the accusation (控诉).

The days that followed were filled with an uncomfortable silence between the two friends. They avoided each other, the once-strong bond damaged by the loss of the stamp.

I did not know if I had done anything unusual to be15 a Genie, but I knew one thing: if that is how I could be one, I wanted to be a Genie for more.

Sure, you and your friends probably have some similar interests, but that's not always the case. In an effort to keep everyone happy, go over travel plans and expectations ahead of time. Have each person categorize activities or sights into "must-see", "want to see" and "would go if we have time". Plan accordingly and make sure everyone can see some of their top attractions.

Communicate and respect each other. Everyone has personal preferences when travelling— from getting the bed closest to the bathroom or sitting in the airplane's window seat. But sometimes things don't go as you like. In this case, share your requirements directly with your travel companions. Have a conversation when problems arise, for communication is the key.

Don't disappear. When travelling with a group — or even just one other person — you may want some alone time. That's completely fine, but make sure your friends know where you are and have a way of contacting you.

Get off your phone. Of course, your friends will understand if you need to take a call from a family member, or in the event of a work emergency, but other than that, try to stay off your phone. After all, the appeal of this type of trip is to spend time with friends. Just enjoy it!

    A. Give each other some space.

    B. Include at least one activity for everyone.

    C. So it's important to make sure you and your friend(s) are on the same page.

    D. At the same time, listen to their concerns and be respectful of them.

    E. Don't respond to less important work contact or send messages frequently.

    F. It's especially true of travelling in foreign countries or unfamiliar places.

    G. And remember that consideration and respect go a long way.

  • 18、Many of us start exercising in the hope of losing unwanted pounds. Unquestionably, aiming to be more active is a good thing. But if the main reason is to lose weight, your resolution could very well come to nothing.

For starters, exercise is typically futile for weight loss. Take walking for example. A 150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That's equal to one can of soda — not exactly a great return on your investment of time and effort. It's much easier just to skip the soda.

When exercise is added to a diet, the results are equally unimpressive. Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising produced no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months. At 12 months, the diet-and-exercise combination showed an advance, but it was slight — about 4 pounds on average.

In studies where exercise has produced meaningful weight loss, participants burned at least 400 to 500 calories per session on five or more days a week. To achieve that, a 150-pound person would need to walk a minimum of 90 minutes or run 30 minutes per day. In short, sessions need to go well beyond what most of us are willing or able to do. And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate (弥补) by boosting desire for food and slowing down metabolism (新陈代谢), which over time limit how many pounds we lose.

When exercise fails to meet our weight-loss expectations, we often stop working out. Perhaps the biggest problem with exercising to drop pounds is that it turns physical activity into punishment — a price we have to pay for a slimmer body. How many times have you heard someone say "I'll need to do extra exercise" after eating too much? We treat exercise as a form of self-punishment for being "bad". In this case, we' re unlikely to keep doing it for very long. The conclusion is that we're more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight.

(1)、What does the underlined word "futile" in paragraph 2 mean?
    A、必要的 B、基本的 C、无用的 D、痛苦的
(2)、Compared with dieting alone, what can we learn about the combination of dieting and exercising?
A、It's less effective than dieting alone. B、It shows little advantage after six months. C、It's much more useful within six months. D、It displays an impressive advantage after a year.
(3)、Why does the body's compensation mechanism affect weight loss?
A、It makes people pay more attention to their well-being. B、It makes people burn more calories during exercise. C、It helps people do more exercise to lose weight. D、It increases food desire and slows down metabolism.
(4)、What is true according to the passage?
A、Exercise is not useful at all for people to lose weight. B、Dieting is the only effective way to lose weight. C、The body's metabolism plays a key role in weight loss. D、Focusing on well-being rather than weight helps people keep exercising.
  • 19、Kevin Beard is my class instructor. Most weeks, I'd greet Kevin as he set up gloves, mats, and other equipment. So I was shocked when I arrived one day to find him standing in front of the room telling a story, with tears streaming down his cheeks. I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like "amazing"and "accomplishment."I realized his tears weren't out of sorrow, but happiness. Just a few days earlier, he'd received his GED (General Equivalency Diploma), at the age of 52.

Having dyslexia (阅读障碍), Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking odd jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally landed an opportunity for a job with some promise: working for a sheriff's department (治安部门). Amazingly, when he came clean with them about his education, they said they'd hire him as long as he got his GED. He agreed, optimistic about this new career potential, and kind of excited about giving school another chance.

Kevin studied with a tutor (家庭教师), and he did it for more than a decade, learning and practicing and correcting his mistakes, every free moment he had, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to"climbing a mountain."In fact, as Kevin took tests along the way, he did something interesting with each of his results. He posted them on his bedroom wall so that he could watch his progress."I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak,"he said.

Finally, he made it."I can't really describe what it's like to finally achieve this,"he said."I can hardly even put it into words. People are giving me graduation gifts! It's a dream come true."

This might sound like a perfect ending. But for Kevin, it's a new beginning. He's on a roll, and his next step is college. "Now that I've accomplished my GED, I'm hungry for education,"he said.

(1)、Why did Kevin cry in the classroom?
A、He was worried about his future. B、He had reached one of his goals. C、He was moved by a touching story. D、He had experienced something terrible.
(2)、What was the response of the sheriff's department when they learned of Kevin's education?
A、They recommended a part-time job to him. B、They assessed his suitability for the job. C、They refused him directly. D、They gave him hope.
(3)、How did Kevin encourage himself to keep going to get his GED?
A、By taking time to do things that interest him. B、By reporting his test results to his tutor. C、By writing himself encouraging words. D、By reminding himself of his progress.
(4)、What can we learn from Kevin's story?
A、Where there's a will, there's a way. B、The early bird catches the worm. C、Practice makes perfect. D、Grasp all, lose all.
