  • 2、According to a study in Science, honeybees have a basic knowledge of the numerical meaning of nothing — zero, which was once thought to be only mathematical ability of few animals.

Andreas Nieder, a scientist who studies how animals' process the idea of "nothing", says zero was discovered recently in human history, and was an important but hard concept.

Previous experiments have shown that honeybees are able to count numbers, but couldn't count very high — only to about four.

Still, that made a team of researchers in Australia and France want to explore what else the bees could do with numbers. Scarlett Howard in the team attracted bees to a wall where they were presented with two square cards. Each card had a different number of black symbols. Howard trained one group of bees to understand that sugar water would always be located under the card with the least number of symbols. "They could come and see two symbols vs three symbols or something like that," she explains. The bees quickly learned to fly to the card with the fewest symbols, an impressive behavior. But then they got another test: The researchers presented the bees with a card that had one symbol or with a blank card that had nothing on it. The bees seemed to understand that "zero" was less than one, because they flew toward the blank card more often than you'd expect.

Aurore Avargues-Weber, a CNRS researcher, points out, even very young children have trouble understanding that zero is a number, because it's not something to count.

She had expected that the bees would see a blank paper as something unimportant that was completely different than what they had been trained on, because brains need to represent something out of nothing to understand zero. It's not minor thing.

What's more, the brains of bees are incredibly tiny brains compared with the brains of humans, Nieder notes. "Bees really have a mini-brain with fewer than one million brain cells," he says, "compared to 86 billion nerve cells in our brain." Even so, the bees can understand the abstract concept of zero and he says he finds that very amazing.

(1)、What leads the research team to explore further ability of bees in dealing with numbers?
A、The previous discovery of bees' ability of counting. B、The hope to prove that bees have mathematical intelligence. C、The fact that bees can count up to a very high number. D、The desire to make bees understand a mathematical concept.
(2)、Why did the researchers present the bees with a card with a single symbol and a blank card?
A、To test if the bees could count to zero. B、To train the bees to recognize different symbols. C、To see if the bees would choose the card with fewer symbols. D、To determine if the bees understood that "zero" was less than one.
(3)、What was Aurore Avargues-Weber's attitude towards the bees' ability?
    A、Indifferent. B、Doubtful. C、Surprised. D、Unclear.
(4)、What is the main idea of the passage?
A、Zero has numerical meaning. B、Zero is a challenge for all to understand. C、Honeybees can be trained to understand zero. D、Honeybees can make sense of zero.
  • 3、Eating and drinking while on buses, trams and trains should be stopped to help solve the rising rate of child overweight, according to a report by the chief medical officer for England, Sally Davies.

The ban on snacking while travelling has attracted attention. Although there would be exceptions for drinking water, for breastfeeding and for anyone with a medical need to eat, it would apply to adults as well as children. There have been complaints on social media that it would make things harder for those with busy lives who need to eat and drink while travelling to work.

Now no one can clearly tell the link between overweight and a habit of eating while travelling, and Davies doesn't provide much explanation, either. Her idea seems to have come out of the blue.

It is fair to say that most people eating while on public transport are more likely to be devouring a chocolate bar or a packet of crisps. As Davies points out, sweet and salty snacks are thought to lead to overweight. Other studies have also shown that children respond to unhealthy food being advertised on television by eating more of it, and fail to eat less at following meals, which may lead to weight gain. Perhaps the aim of the ban is simply to reduce the opportunities we have for taking in the calories, or maybe it is to stop children seeing the adults around them enjoying these foods.

We can't find out more about the evidence to support the travel snack ban, as Davies has recently stepped Adults with medical needs.

(1)、According to the ban raised by Sally Davies, who can eat or drink in the public transport?
A、People with busy life. B、Adults with medical needs. C、People drinking coffee. D、Everyone except those eating snacks.
(2)、What does the underlined phrase "have come out of the blue" mean?
A、Be sudden and unexpected. B、Be well planned and thought out. C、Be widely accepted and understood. D、Be based on solid evidence.
(3)、What can we learn from the passage?
A、Unhealthy food advertising has no effect on children. B、The ban on snacking while travelling will definitely be carried out. C、Davies's report may make a difference to future health policy. D、The government is not concerned about the overweight problem.
(4)、What can be the best title for the text?
A、How can children stop eating snacks? B、How can we solve the problem of overweight? C、Will government carry out the ban on snacking on public transport? D、Will a ban on snacking on public transport really help fight overweight?
  • 4、I would only leave home for 24 hours — a mini-vacation that seemed impossibly exciting after many months spent close to home helping care for our 2-year-old daughter.

It had been a year since I'd seen Angus, my best friend since childhood. But as kids, then teenagers and into our 20s, we were inseparable, more like brothers than friends. Although both of us were busy with our families and living in different cities — he never felt out of reach.

Angus was waiting in the parking lot of the run-down Ottawa bus station when I stepped off the bus into the hot sun. He drove and we shot the breeze. I felt the mix of comfort and anxiety as you wonder if you still have anything in common. But within minutes we had settled into an easy back and forth.

The next day, Angus and I stood in his garage and got our things organized and put them into boxes. Then, Angus and I rowed at a steady pace on the river. A few hundred yards out, Angus said, " That's where we're going — the Deschênes Rapids (激流)." Before long we heard a loud sound. It was the sound of the rapids. I trembled with fear, but we pressed on. A few minutes later, we crossed a line of small red sign that neither of us recognized as our last warning. "Go for the island!" I shouted. " Too late, " said Angus.

A bigger wave sped toward us. I came up, shook the water from my eyes and saw the dam — a 20-foot-high wall. Then, I heard Angus's voice, calm and confident, right behind me. " Hold on to the canoe (独木舟)," he said. By luck, a few minutes later a small craft with firemen came into view and picked us up. One older fireman said it was a miracle we were alive. Angus and I learned later that the area we had gone through was a dead zone. Between 2007 and 2017, at least six people died or went missing around the dam. All I wanted to do was get home. I started crying, thinking about how close I'd come to never seeing my family again.

(1)、It can be inferred from paragraph 2 that __________.
A、They were inseparable after their 20s B、Their relationship wasn't affected by distance C、They're not familiar with each other D、They've seen each other a lot lately
(2)、What happened to the author and Angus during the trip?
A、They chose a smooth route. B、They didn't notice the warning. C、They were scared by the rapids. D、They reached the island at last.
(3)、How did the writer feel after they were saved by firemen?
A、Confused and uncertain. B、Angry and disappointed. C、Embarrassed and ashamed. D、Relieved and grateful.
(4)、Which sentence can best describe this trip?
A、The trip was filled with joy. B、The trip was a relaxing experience. C、The trip was a narrow escape. D、The trip was a disappointment.

The freezing cold winter really prevents me from going to Beibei District, Chongqing. You really can't imagine how cold a southern China city can be until you experience a winter there.  However, while beneath three quilts (被子), I found it still first wet and then cold. Without the wetness, there will be no coldness, for which spicy (辛辣的) food has been popular since very long time ago.

Summer in Europe is very nice for us to visit one of our favourite cities for a break. Below we have put together a short list of our favourite summer break locations (地方) that offer a great balance of culture, sunshine and fun.

Berlin, the second most populous city in the European Union, gets the third place on our list. It has three famous airports: Tegel International Airport, Tempelhof International Airport, and Schonefeld International Airport.

The capital of Germany is on this list not only because it is a fantastic place to go on holiday but also since it teaches a very important lesson to humanity (人,人性). The Berlin Wall, the better part of which still remains well kept for educational and amusement (娱乐) aims, reminds us of the extra costs paid by everyone. Today, the undamaged part of the Wall, known as the East Side Gallery, shows striking murals (壁画); if you are interested in this chapter (时期) of the city's history, there is also a Berlin Wall Memorial you would want to visit. The Potsdamer Platz, divided into two by the Wall, is a newly developed area that is famous for a large shopping center and movie theatre complexes (混合体), and adds a bit of modern colour to Berlin's historical value.

Much like the other places that made the list, Berlin is also a city of art. The city has over one hundred and fifty museums in all, and a few of the ones providing an extraordinary experience include the Art Center Berlin Friedrichstrabe, the Museum of Indian Art, and the Museum of East Asian Art. Appreciating Berlin's art is much like taking a university course in itself and it can only be truly appreciated in several trips.

In a small village in the Philippines, there lived a family of five. The parents, Juan and Maria, had three children: two boys and a girl. They lived in a small house made of bamboo, surrounded by many trees and the sound of the nearby river.

Juan and Maria lived a happy life with their three children: Miguel, Jose and Ana. The eldest son, Miguel, was a hardworking young man who helped his father with the farm work. He was responsible and always took care of his younger brother and sister. The couple always told their children that they were happy as long as the family was together. Though Jose and Ana were too young to understand that, Miguel, who treasured a photo of his family, bore that in mind.

One day, while the family was having dinner, they heard a loud knock on the door. It was the village chief. who had come to deliver some bad news: The village was in danger of being flooded due to heavy rain, and they needed to evacuate(撤离)immediately.

Juan and Maria quickly gathered their children and some essentials, and they set off towards the evacuation center. Before leaving for the center, Miguel took the precious family photo in a hurry. The journey was long and full of danger, with the rain pouring down heavily and the wind beating them violently. The children were scared and tired, but Juan and Maria held their hands to reassure them, telling them that everything was going to be alright.

When they finally reached the evacuation center, they were greeted by other families who had also been forced to leave their homes. The center was crowded and uncomfortable, but the family was grateful to have a roof over their heads and some food to eat.

Days turned into weeks, and Juan and Maria grew restless. They missed their home and their farm, and they were worried about what would happen to their crops. Several weeks later, the day came when the floodwaters slowly receded(消退).
