1、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sam was having a tough Friday. The 51-year-old, who was dealing with kidney failure (肾衰竭) and had been on dialysis (透析) for a few years, found himself at a vascular center 30 miles from home for the second time in 24 hours. The day before, his brother had driven him to a hospital in New Jersey, for a routine declotting (除血块) of his dialysis access port, but it unexpectedly clogged (堵住) again that night. He'd been diagnosed with diabetes more than 20 years before, which led to his kidney problems. He was on the transplant list, but no matches had yet appeared.
Sam took a taxi to and from his appointment. Leo, a taxi driver aged 31, was driving north and accepted the order. When Sam got into the car, Leo could see that the older man was weak but in good spirits. And as they set out on the 40-minute drive to Sam's home in Salem, they chatted. "Sam really lit up the car with positive energy," said Leo, who shared with Sam that he was a proud Army veteran. Sam, who worked in sales at a company that produces piping, mentioned that in the past he'd enjoyed volunteering at his church and in his community, even serving as president of the city council. But he was doing less these days, he explained, because the dialysis treatments left him exhausted.
Then Sam revealed that he was searching for a kidney donor and that the giver and receiver both need to be tested before the surgery. Leo joked that he'd be a good donor candidate, because he didn't drink or smoke. Sam agreed, though he didn't think much of it as they kept driving. Leo, however, couldn't stop thinking about it. When Leo offered to exchange their phone numbers, Sam thought Leo was just being nice.

5、Faceless influencers are becoming famous online
The most successful influencers put their lives in the spotlight — and their faces all over your social-media feed. Meet faceless influencers, who are attracting millions of followers and are quietly conquering social media, turning their anonymity (匿名) into commercial gains.
On TikTok some 200,000 posts are tagged Faceless; they have a combined 1.1 billion views. Facebook groups such as "Girls Gone Faceless" boast over 100,000 members. "Faceless creators have the same dedicated followings as traditional influencers," says Julia Markowitz of Emerald Woods Management, an influencer agency. ""
In the early days this meant unnamed bloggers and using a pen name. But social media and influencer culture have always emphasised personal identity. Removing one's identity markers has made faceless influencing a more inclusive space for the neutral content.
Two things changed to give rise to the new faceless trend. One was the success of Asia's unnamed "silent vloggers", whose cinematic videos of daily life while stuck at home during the pandemic went viral. Faceless influencers emerged when The Gen Z corporate girl wanted to make money on the side of her nine-to-five without putting up her make-up.
Faceless influencers may be thriving today, but they are not immune to pressures. Some wonder whether they are more likely to be displaced by accounts that use artificial intelligence to create content cheaply. Technology is now good enough for virtual influencers to be believable, cutting out the need for real people.
A. The internet has a history of anonymity.
B. The only difference is that their followers care about their lifestyle, not their specific life.
C. The second was that people try to make money as influencers without devoting too much.
D. Another was that Faceless influencers could avoid some annoying comments from viewers.
E. Their biggest competition is not other imitators but the recommendation algorithm (算法).
F. Influencers without unique personality and real-life stories can be easily generated by AI.
G. But a new kind of creator is turning the internet's traditional model of success upside down.

6、With the invention of tinned goods and pasteurization (巴氏消毒法) in the 19th century, food processing became possible on an industrial scale. Processing innovations made food cheaper, more convenient and plentiful. According to the UN, the food supply in rich countries available for a person increased by over 20% between 1961 and 2021, to 3,500 kilocalories. Meanwhile, obesity rates have more than tripled.
Now concerns are growing that the heavy processing may itself be harmful. A particular target is "ultra-processed foods" (UPFs), a relatively recent label put forward by Monteiro, a Brazilian scientist. Authorities in Brazil, Canada and Peru have advised the public to limit consumption of these foods.
At the heart of the debate is a question: are UPFs unhealthy because their nutritional content is poor, or does the processing somehow pose risks in itself? New research may soon provide answers that could reformulate what people eat.
At the turn of the 21st century Dr Monteiro noticed that people in Brazil were buying less sugar and oil than in the past. Yet the rates of obesity were still rising. This coincided with the growing popularity of packaged snacks and ready-made meals, which were loaded with sugar, fats and other additives.
UPFs includes heavily processed items, for example fizzy drinks, sugary cereals and frozen pizzas. These are made with ingredients not typically found in a home kitchen, such as hydrogenated oils, high-fructose corn syrup, flavouring agents. UPFs are made by breaking down whole foods into components such as sugars, proteins, starches and fibre. These are chemically processed along with additives like artificial colors and sweeteners to make the food more appealing.
Since the 1990s the share of UPFs in diets worldwide has grown; they now account for more than half of the calorie intake in America and Britain. Evidence has also been building that these foods are harmful in some way. Numerous studies show that people who consume diets high in UPFs tend to have more health problems, including obesity, type-2 diabetes, various cancers and mental health problems.
UPFs often contain higher fat, sugar and salt than processed foods, which could account for their negative effects. But a recent analysis found that even after adjusting for fat, sugar and salt, UPFs were still strongly linked to poor health. That suggests there is more to their harm than just a poor nutrient profile.
(1)、What is the attitude of the authorities in Brazil towards UPFs in paragraph 2?A、Supportive. B、Negative. C、Indifferent. D、Favorable.(2)、Why are additives widely used in food processing?A、They contribute to food's diversity. B、They make food more attractive. C、They make food easier to digest. D、They are high-qualified and affordable.(3)、What can we learn from the passage?A、UPFs merely causes problems in the developed countries. B、Food processing is harmful throughout the history. C、One will be more likely to fall ill if consuming much UPFs. D、UPFs will be healthy if fat, sugar and salt are reduced.(4)、What is the text mainly about?A、The reason why UPFs are bad for health. B、The ingredients of UPFs. C、The benefits that UPFs used to provide. D、The diseases linked to UPFs. -
7、On November 1, 1876, The New York Times, a newspaper, confidently declared Halloween would disappear forever. However, in 2024, consumers are expected to spend $11.6 billion celebrating the holiday, up from $3.3 billion in 2005. Perhaps it is time for the newspaper to eat some crow.
Halloween, has transformed from a pagan (异教的) feast to a celebration with lovingly homemade costumes and treats to one of the largest consumer spending holidays in America.
But how did this holiday with humble origins become an economic boost with global appeal? Halloween is a marketer's dream, said Arnold, a finance professor. It falls on the same day every year. Halloween items are largely consumable, for candy needs to be met every year and kids outgrow costumes, and pop culture trends can help predict which costumes will be the must-haves each season. The 1970s brought mass-manufactured costumes and individually wrapped candy that made the holiday explode in popularity. It also shifted from a more religious holiday to mass celebration.
Even when consumers are worried about their finances, they'll still open their wallets for holidays like Halloween and Christmas, Professor Arnold said, because "it creates a unique experience at a particular time of the year." "Even during the pandemic, consumers try to celebrate these two holidays," he said.
Trick-or-treating came about as a way to distract children who, by 1900, had taken over the holiday. Kids only played simple but mischievous pranks. However, as time passed and America began urbanizing, the pranks became very destructive. Communities needed a way to "buy off" gangs of naughty children who were frightening neighbors by damaging furniture, setting tires on fire and even tripping people on sidewalks. Neighborhood house-to-house parties were held for kids. This origin of trick-or-treat also provided the basis for today's haunted attractions like haunted houses and mazes as people would set up "trails of terror" in their basements.
(1)、What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 "eat some crow" probably mean?A、Keep its promise. B、Make an apology. C、Announce something officially. D、Report an event.(2)、What has Halloween changed into?A、A tradition that has already vanished. B、A holiday that drives people to spend. C、A festival that features decorations. D、A feast that is liked all over the world.(3)、Why do people spend much on holidays like Halloween?A、To get fashionable costumes. B、To show their faith in the religion. C、To boost the economy in their way. D、To gain a special experience.(4)、What is the origin of trick-or-treat?A、It is designed to keep children amused. B、It serves as a purpose of driving evils away. C、It is a way to keep children from playing destructive tricks. D、It is a method to strengthen the bond between kids and adults. -

Dhanani attended Texas University after seeing Dr. Tatiana's videos online. "Watching Dr. Tatiana do the experiments online, especially since she was a female leader, was more inspiring for me to even go into physics," Dhanani said. 17、A private high-teach company has been sending Starlink satellite since 2019 with the goal of bringing broadband Internet to remote parts of the globe. That brought the total number of active Starlink satellite to 3,660, or about 50 percent of the nearly 7,300 active satellite in orbit.
For just as long, astronomers have been warning that the bright satellite could mess up their view of the universe by leaving streams (条痕) on telescope images as they fly past. Even the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits more than 500 kilometers above the Earth's surface, is vulnerable to these satellite streams, as well as those from other satellite groups. From 2002 to 2021, the percentage of Hubble images affected by light from low-orbit satellite increased by about 50 percent.
Actually, the number of images partly blocked by satellite is small, nearly 4 percent of images taken between 2018 and 2021 for one of Hubble's cameras. However, the number of satellite and space debris will only increase in the future. By the 2030 s, the probability of a satellite crossing Hubble's field of view any time it takes an image will be between 20 percent and 50 percent.
The sudden jump in Starlink satellite also pose a problem for space traffic. Star link satellite all orbit at a similar distance from the Earth, just above 500 kilometers. And it's a popular orbital altitude — Hubble is there, and so is the International Space Station and the China's space station. If there is some kind of collision between Starlinks, some kind of disaster, it could immediately affect human lives.
By the 2030's, there could be 100,000 satellite crowding low Earth orbit. So far, there are no international regulations to limit the number of satellite a private company can send or to limit which orbits they can take up. The speed of commercial development is much faster than the speed of regulation change. There needs to be the reformation of space traffic management and space regulation generally to deal with these massive commercial projects.

18、Known for their hairy ears, round faces and big black noses, koalas spend most of their time napping in the thick forests. Their love for perching (栖息) high up and moving very little makes these Australian icons difficult to trace. But that could soon change thanks to a new technique that can "sniff" out koalas' whereabouts.
The method, described on October 13 in the Journal of Applied Ecology, captures DNAfloating around the koala' s natural environment using filters (过滤器) made of cheesecloth, a thin fabric commonly found in kitchens. Secured between two stainless steel plates, the cheesecloth filters were tested at 26 sites in four nature reserves across Queensland,Australia. Each site received two filters — one placed about 1.5 meters above the ground with a fan that mechanically drew in air, and another placed closer to the ground to trap any debris (碎片). After a few days, researchers retook the filters and analyzed the genetic material trapped within. To their delight, the scientists identified koalas' DNA as well as DNA from eleven other species that are known to inhabit the area.
Populations of koalas have sharply decreased in recent years due to bushfires and diseases. In 2022, the Australian government declared that koalas are endangered in some parts of the country. Conservation efforts have relied on advanced instruments including thermal imaging drones and acoustic recorders to detect koalas. "The new DNA sampler is less expensive and requires fewer technical skills to operate," the researchers say.
"It is very simple," says evolutionary biologist Celine Frere of The University ofQueensland in Brisbane, Australia. "The idea is to get citizen scientists, private property owners and school students to go out and use the filters."
The work adds yet another tool that scientists can use to detect environmental DNA(eDNA). Other researchers have sought for eDNA in the air in zoos and forests, on vegetation and even on the filters of air pollution monitoring stations.
"Some of the work in this particular study is really an important first step," says ecologist Matthew Barnes of Texas Tech University in Lubbock. The experiment occurred in an uncontrolled environment, where there' re a lot of uncertainties and a risk that strong wind or rain could affect the results.
(1)、Why are koalas difficult to track?A、Because they are small and quiet. B、Because they are sensitive and alert. C、Because they like staying high and inactive. D、Because they can take on the colors of the background.(2)、What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A、How the method works. B、What is the result of the method. C、What is the purpose of the method. D、How the ideas behind the method develop.(3)、What can we learn from the text?A、Koalas can be easily caught now. B、New tools are expensive and hard to handle. C、Koalas have died out because of bushfires and diseases. D、The results of the experiment may be influenced by many factors.(4)、What is Matthew Barnes's attitude towards this study?A、Doubtful. B、Favourable. C、Confused. D、Disapproving. -
19、A new initiative in India is making a significant impact on the lives of street children. The Mobile School program, launched by a non-profit organization, provides education for children who live and work on the streets of Mumbai. The program operates out of a specially designed bus that travels to various locations in the city, offering classes and educational resources to children who would otherwise have no access to schooling.
The Mobile School program started in 2018 and has since grown to include several buses, each equipped with books, computers, and other learning materials. The buses visit different neighborhoods on a rotating schedule, ensuring that the program can benefit as many children as possible. Teachers and volunteers conduct classes in basic literacy, mathematics, and science, as well as offering lessons in art and music.
One of the key features of the Mobile School is its flexibility. The program is designed to meet the children where they are, in terms of both their physical well-being and educational needs. This approach has proven to be highly effective, as many street children are unable to attend regular schools due to their transient (暂住的) lifestyles or the need to work to support their families.
The initiative has received widespread praise from both local communities and international organizations. Parents of the children who attend the Mobile School have expressed their gratitude, noting that the program provides their children with opportunities they never thought possible. The success of the Mobile School has also inspired similar programs in other cities across India.
Despite the positive impact, the Mobile School program faces several challenges. Funding is a constant concern, as the program relies heavily on donations and grants (拨款) to operate. Additionally, reaching all the street children in a city as large as Mumbai is a daunting task. However, the organization behind the Mobile School remains committed to its mission and continues to seek new ways to expand and improve the program.
(1)、What is the main objective of the Mobile School program in Mumbai?A、To deliver basic education to street children. B、To offer professional training to street children. C、To provide temporary shelter for street children. D、To distribute food and clothing to street children.(2)、Which of the following best describes a key feature of the Mobile School program?A、It operates only during the weekends. B、It provides education at a fixed location. C、It focuses exclusively on science and mathematics.
