1、Last month, Lime Technology, a company that runs so-called "micromobility" transportation systems around the world, was selected to operate Vancouver's first scooter rental program. Now, more details are available as follows.
How does it work?
Using the Lime app on their smartphones, customers can locate an available scooter at a parking station in Vancouver, sign it out, cruise around, and then park it at any station in the same area. E-scooters in the city have a speed limit of 25 km/h and are allowed on roads and bike lanes, but not sidewalks.
Where can people ride the scooters?
Initially, riders are supposed to stay inside the designated area. If they scoot outside the area, the motor of the scooter will cease to function, and it will not restart until they walk it back inside the area.
What's the cost to riders?
"Monthly and annual passes will also be available at much more affordable rates," Danielle Wiley, Vancouver's associate director of street use management, said, "to aid the city's transportation and climate goals of reducing people's dependence on private cars."
What can Vancouver learn from cities with a shared e-scooter system?
E-scooters, run by several companies including Lime, have increased in popularity around the world, but not without their critics. Paris forbade e-scooter rentals last year following complaints from pedestrians, and just last week, Melbourne followed suit.
"We want to avoid the problems of shared e-scooters as reported elsewhere," Wiley said. "That's why it is hugely important for us to have physical parking stations."
(1)、When using e-scooters, customers can't ________.A、employ the Lime app B、ride on bicycle tracks C、park scooters randomly D、ride at limited speeds(2)、What will happen if an e-scooter rider goes outside the designated area?A、The rider will be issued a ticket. B、The scooter won't operate properly. C、The transportation will be affected. D、The scooter will start automatically.(3)、Which of the following cities ban e-scooter rentals?A、Paris and Melbourne. B、Valencia and Paris. C、Melbourne and Vancouver. D、Vancouver and Valencia. -

In a small town lived a teenage girl named Lily. She was cheerful and loved making new friends and trying new things, but she seldom turned to others for help. Lately she felt sad and lost as she was stuck in a difficult situation.
Lily had arranged to go to a concert with her best friend, Sarah, on Saturday evening. However, that morning her cousins visited, and they spent a noisy, tiring day together. Because of the busy day, Lily did not hear her phone and missed her concert appointment. The next day, when Lily met Sarah, she was excited to share the story of her cousins' visit. But Sarah became angry and walked away. Even when Lily tried to explain, Sarah did not respond and started avoiding her at school.
One day, Lily noticed a flyer (传单) for a youth group meeting at the local community center. Although she was curious about meeting new people, she also felt a little scared of the unknown. After a brief pause, she decided to join the meeting, hoping it might help her feel better.
At the community center, a group of friendly teenagers welcomed her. David, the group leader, greeted her warmly and introduced her to everyone. They played games, talked about their interests, and shared their problems. As the meeting went on, Lily realized she was not alone in her struggles. The group discussed how challenging it could be to manage school work, friendships, and family expectations.
Lily had kept her feelings inside ever since her argument with Sarah, thinking she was the only one experiencing such difficulties. Now, surrounded by others who understood, she felt more hopeful. When it was her turn to speak, she opened up about her feelings. As she shared her emotions, Lily felt a great sense of relief.

6、Stressful situations can't be avoided in daily life. You're getting ready to meet someone for a first date. Or worst-case scenario (情况), you're facing an emergency. Your hands start to shake, your heart races, and your mind floods with negative thoughts.
It's common for the body's natural "fight-or-flight" response to kick in, and it may be hard to react the way you would otherwise like to under pressure. When the next high-stress situation arises, you are better prepared.
One technique is to exercise the heart rate variability, or HRV, which is the way in which a person's heart rate goes up and down and constantly varies. Having a higher HRV is a sign that your nervous system is healthy.
Be aware that your reaction to stress is not abnormal. When a person starts to feel the sensations of stress, thoughts such as "I can't do this" or panic begin to happen. But when you're mindful that these reactions are normal, you can use that awareness to your advantage.
Experts recommend breathing in normally through the nose for four seconds and breathing out — as if you are gently blowing out a candle — for six seconds to help the body get to the best state.
Ultimately, it is important to remember that stress is unavoidable, especially when emergencies happen. It keeps our nervous systems prepared to respond when we need to, and to go back to a state of calm when things are OK and there's no threat in the environment.
A. A little bit of stress is good for us.
B. But you can train the mind and body.
C. You have difficulty breathing normally.
D. It is important to stay calm in an emergency.
E. You're standing up to speak in front of a crowd.
F. Reminding yourself to take slower breaths is also important.
G. And your heart can adapt better to daily challenges and stressors.

7、If you're used to letting your dog lick your face — and maybe even your mouth — you're not alone. Now, scientists warn that dog saliva (唾液) could actually be dangerous. A new study found that household dogs are often overlooked sources of salmonella (沙门氏菌).
Researchers at Penn State University (PSU) found that dogs can carry antibiotic-resistant (耐抗生素的) salmonella, which poses a serious risk to humans. In both dogs and humans, salmonella infections can cause fever and stomach trouble. In some cases, the infection can spread beyond the intestines (肠) and cause more serious issues, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Dogs can get salmonella by eating raw food or consuming waste from infected animals. It can then be passed on to humans through contact with the dog's waste, warns the U. S. Food and Drug Administration. The issue is that dogs can carry salmonella without showing any signs of illness, making it easy to spread without warning.
The PSU team studied salmonella in dogs from May 2017 to March 2023, as well as human cases. They found 87 cases in dogs and concluded that 77 human cases may have come from dogs. The salmonella in dogs also had genes for drug resistance, which is concerning for treatment.
The study also found that 39% of samples from dogs had a gene that helps salmonella survive in their intestines. This means that even after the dog recovers, it can still spread salmonella through its waste.
Though salmonella isn't common in dogs, the study's authors stress that human contact with dogs makes the issue important. "We don't let cows sleep in our beds or lick our faces, but we do with dogs," said lead author Sophia Kenney.
Co-author Nkuchia Mikanatha emphasized the importance of cleanliness. Simple practices like hand washing, cleaning pet bowls, and not letting your dog lick your face can prevent the spread of salmonella. The goal of the research is not to discourage pet ownership but to raise awareness of risks and encourage better cleanliness to keep both pets and owners safe.
(1)、What did the new study find about dogs?A、They like licking owners. B、Their licks endanger owners. C、They contract salmonella. D、Their licks create salmonella.(2)、Why is treating salmonella in dogs challenging?A、Dogs do not cooperate during treatment. B、Dogs can spread salmonella until recovery. C、Salmonella in dogs carries anti-drug genes. D、Salmonella in dogs spreads quickly and secretly.(3)、Why does the author mention cows in paragraph 6?A、To discuss causes of drug resistance. B、To compare animal feeding practices. C、To highlight closer human-dog contact. D、To explain animal behavior differences.(4)、What does the research finally recommend?A、Keeping better cleaning routines. B、Restricting dog ownership. C、Stopping offering raw food to pets. D、Having less contact with dogs. -
8、A case study is an in-depth study of one person, group, or event. In a case study, nearly every aspect of the subject's life and history is analyzed to seek patterns and causes of behavior. Case studies can be used in many different fields, including psychology, medicine, education, political science, and social work.
It's important to remember that the insights from case studies cannot be used to determine cause-and-effect relationships between variables. However, case studies may be used to develop theories that can then be addressed in experimental research.
There have been a number of notable case studies in the history of psychology. Much of Freud's work and theories were developed through individual case studies. Here is one great example of case studies in psychology.
Anna O was a patient of a physician named Josef Breuer. While she was never a patient of Freud's, Freud and Breuer discussed her case extensively. The woman was experiencing symptoms of a condition that was then known as hysteria, a state of uncontrolled excitement, fear or panic, and found that talking about her problems helped relieve her symptoms. Her case played an important part in the development of talk therapy (疗法) as an approach to mental health treatment.
As demonstrated in the case of Anna O, case studies offer valuable insights into understanding human behavior and developing treatment methods. When you are writing a case study, you should include a section where you discuss the case study itself, including the advantages and limitations of the study. You should note how the findings of your case study might support previous research. You should also describe some of the implications of your case study. What ideas or findings might require further exploration? How might researchers go about exploring some of these questions in additional studies?
Case studies clarify rare phenomena, inform practical involvement, and bridge clinical observation with experimental research to advance psychological understanding.
(1)、What is the main purpose of a case study?A、To develop experimental researches. B、To prove theories in different fields. C、To replace psychological theories with data. D、To analyze a subject's life patterns thoroughly.(2)、What can be learned from paragraph 2 about case studies?A、They can establish causal links. B、They support theory formation. C、They generate insufficient statistical data. D、They offer conclusive experimental evidence.(3)、What was the significance of Anna O's case?A、It marked the first case of hysteria. B、It helped Freud develop his theories. C、It aided the development of talk therapies. D、It showed the importance of medical treatment.(4)、What should case study writers include?A、Predictions about behavioral patterns. B、Comparison with experimental designs. C、Discussion of clinical observation methods. D、Evaluation of study strengths and weaknesses. -
9、It's a hot night on the western coast of Sri Lanka. A team of volunteers is patrolling (巡逻) a popular tourist beach on the outskirts of Colombo, searching for turtle (海龟) nesting sites. They gather in a circle, digging in the sand at dusk.
Turtle eggs have long been stolen as a food source by coastal communities, but more recently it is human activity of another kind that has proved a greater threat. As the city has expanded, restaurants and other tourist facilities have mushroomed along most parts of the country's western coast, bringing in more people, noisy music, and much plastic and chemical waste, all of which harms turtle nesting during the reproducing season.
Aware that life for the turtles was becoming more difficult, Muditha Katuwawala, one of the volunteers, expanded the activities of the Pearl Protectors to include regular patrols. Working with the coastguard, the volunteers help to find eggs laid in hazardous areas and remove them to a safe nesting place on the beach until they hatch.
Nevertheless, a significant threat to the turtles comes from the illegal hunters because once they find a nest, all the eggs are usually taken. "Certain restaurants and hotels sell these eggs to the foreigners as a novel food, at a good price," Katuwawala says. "So turtle eggs now have commercial demand." He says patrolling alone will not create a lasting impact on turtle conservation and it needs to be combined with educating coastal communities.
Another volunteer, Lara Wijesuriya, agrees. "It makes a difference to the community in how they perceive the problem and the solution," she says. "And it makes a difference to the volunteers in how they approach the problem. It bridges the gap."
In the southern part of the island, the Turtle Conservation Project has gone a step further by employing hunters to protect nests, providing an alternative income.
"When you finally see the baby turtles going into the ocean, it's really nice to know that you helped a life to live," Fernando, another volunteer, says.
(1)、What is a greater threat to turtle nesting recently?A、Urban expansion. B、Illegal hunting. C、Industrial activity. D、Destructive overfishing.(2)、What does the underlined word "hazardous" in paragraph 3 mean?A、Risky. B、Scenic. C、Public. D、Crowded.(3)、What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4 and 5?A、The business value of turtle eggs. B、The threat of illegal hunting to turtle eggs. C、The role of volunteer efforts in conservation. D、The need of combining patrolling and educating.(4)、Which is a suitable title for the text?A、Economic Benefits of Turtle Eggs B、Joint Efforts in Turtle Conservation C、Traditional Practices in Turtle Protection D、Coastal Tourism Challenges in Sri Lanka -

Little Lucy lived in a very poor part of a big city. One day, her class teacher talked about gifts and how it was much more important to give them than to receive them. She said that she hoped all the boys and girls in the class would remember to give something, however small, to their loved ones to show how much they loved them.
Afterward Lucy thought a good deal about what the teacher had said and wondered how she could afford to give anything to anybody. Her daddy gave her $1 a week for pocket money, and that didn't go very far these days. Somehow, she thought, she would try to buy something for mother, and father, and brother, and sister, but, oh, dear, there was Grandma, too! What could she do about Grandma?
The next time she went to class she asked the teacher if it would be acceptable to give Grandma just a card. The teacher said Grandma would be happy to receive the smallest thing if it was given in love. So Lucy began searching for a card for Grandma that wouldn't cost too much. One day she saw it. The very one! It had a picture of a cat on it, and Lucy remembered that Grandma had just lost old tabby cat(斑猫)that she had loved so much. So she bought the card, paying one whole week's pocket money for it.
On the day Lucy gave Grandma the card, she was overjoyed to see how pleased Grandma was. She said the picture of the cat was just like her own precious tabby. This gave Lucy an idea. "Someday," she said to herself, "I'll buy my granny a real cat. Just think how happy she'll be then!"
She found a pet shop and asked how much a real cat would cost. "Twenty dollars," said the man. Lucy's face fell. Twenty dollars! How in the world would she ever get $20? That would take all her pocket money for 20 weeks — five whole months!

16、Fall is here, whether you like it or not. Soon the weather will get colder. Another year is dying; that's just how it goes. Studies suggest that if you are deeply preoccupied with your thoughts in the autumn, you may be at more risk for depression in the winter. No wonder fall has various celebrations intended to keep our spirits up.
Psychologists say that the feelings that often crop up in autumn come from our discomfort with change, and an anxiety and uncertainty about what that change will bring. Among those things, the anxiety, the promise and even the careful thoughts function differently. They make it the ideal season to build resilience and practice mindfulness.
But intolerance of uncertainty is a part of being human; everyone has it on some level. And it is changeable. It's an approach worth trying to cultivate uncertainty rather than escaping from it.
Another strategy experts suggest for relieving anxiety is to step back and simply observe the world around you. Quietly sit on a park bench and watch a tree drop its leaves, for instance.
Autumn will probably hold some whisper of decay and death. If you are always trying to avoid difficult feelings, you might end up also cutting yourself off from love, richness and sweetness. Dr. Wilson said, "this is how life is: sweet and sad, poured from the same vessel in equal measure."
A. In fact, it is not that bad.
B. But embracing that sadness is important.
C. One way to build tolerance is to lean into it.
D. The leaves will die and the nights will stretch longer.
E. After all, it's a time to appreciate what nature offers you.
F. Also, fall brings with bright days, sweet fruits and cozy sweaters.
G. In such moments, you may as well stop thinking or analyzing current troubles.

17、Most people are born with the desire to explore our planet. There's this sense in modern society that somehow we will find a better existence or we' ll find happiness by going on holiday. I think we've almost been conditioned to become tourists, to the extent that a lot of people engage in tourism without actually considering why they' re doing so.
There are plenty of people who will go to the same place every year, because they' re comfortable and familiar with it. People are experiencing less and less the places they are at. They might be there in body, but not necessarily in mind, because a lot of people are constantly thinking: "How am I going to present myself to my social media group back home through my posts on Facebook or Instagram?"
But this is just one side of the problem. On the other side, our travel has taken a toll on the environment. It is reported that the carbon emissions from air travel accounted for 2.5% of global emissions in 2019, and this figure may triple (增至三倍) by 2050.
I admit that there has been a considerable increase in people's awareness about the environment. And some people say that this can eventually lead to a shift in our behavior as tourists. However, I can't share their optimism. A lot of research has been done into the extent to which tourists are willing to adapt their behavior. And even those people who regularly consume or behave in an environmentally friendly fashion actually temporarily forget their environmental commitments, and behave like normal tourists. They do suffer some kind of eco-guilt, but nevertheless they continue to travel, and they continue to fly.
I'm old enough to remember when tourism was just the summer holiday, and you would look forward to those two weeks a year when you would go on holiday. It was special and meaningful, but nowadays it is so easy to travel. Travel is now seen as a right, not as a privilege. However, to some extent, I hope there will be a significant rise in the cost of travel, or at least in air travel. In my opinion, only in this way can people realize the value of travel experience and really enjoy it. Also, only in this way can many problems arising with the development of tourism be properly solved.

18、When geneticist Elizabeth Clare placed 70 small filters (过滤器) around England's Hamerton Zoo Park last year, she intended for the traps to collect DNA from the sky. What she didn't know, however, was that led by Kristine Bohmann, another team was conducting a similar experiment in the Copenhagen Zoo.
Wild animals are usually studied indirectly through clues that they leave behind, like fur, feathers or waste. That means certain animals - especially the small, fast and shy ones - are often missed in traditional wildlife surveys. Because all living organisms shed DNA into the air of the environment they live in, the two research groups hoped they could use those genetic traces, called eDNA, to find out what animals frequent an area.
One of the biggest challenges of working with airborne eDNA is avoiding contamination (污染) from other sources, which could muddle (弄乱) results."The zoo becomes this perfect environment where we know everything that we're detecting has only one possible source," says Clare. "My lab doesn't handle tiger DNA ever, so if we're detecting a tiger, there is no other source."
To see if eDNA could be detected in the air, both teams placed filters in different zoo enclosures, including both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Bohmann's group collected 40 air samples in three locations around the Copenhagen Zoo. They also tested three different air sampling devices. Clare's group took a similar approach but instead used just one type of air pump.
Though both groups were optimistic that their idea could work, they were still shocked at their results. In the 40 samples that Bohmann's group collected, they successfully found 49 species including mammals, birds, reptiles and fish. "We had no idea that this would actually work so well," says Bohmann. Clare's team also identified DNA from more than two dozen different species of animals from their samples, including tigers, lemurs and dingoes.
"It's really exciting looking at how both of these papers have produced the same results," says Mark Johnson, who studies eDNA at Texas Tech University. While hopeful about the future of airborne eDNA, Johnson notes huge leaps need to be made before the techniques used in the zoo can be applied in the field. Collecting eDNA in the wild adds a host of new variables. "The next step is to take it from the zoo into the natural environment and see what we find there," says Johnson.
(1)、What did the two teams of scientists try to do?A、To study zoo animals' DNA in detail. B、To detect animals from DNA in the air. C、To improve zoo environments for animals. D、To compare DNAs of different zoo animals.(2)、Why did the scientists choose the zoo for their study?A、Because the air there was much cleaner. B、Because there were many useful resources in it. C、Because they expected to find a tiger DNA there. D、Because it could ensure the accuracy of the results.(3)、What can we learn about the two groups' findings?A、They needed to be further proved. B、They depended greatly on the devices. C、They were far beyond the scientists' expectations. D、They failed to support the scientists' idea about eDNA.(4)、What's Mark Johnson's attitude towards the future of eDNA?A、Cautiously optimistic. B、Mildly doubtful. C、Somewhat opposed. D、Completely supportive. -
19、"Who says it's Father's Day?" my son says to me, with the questioning angry look of someone who's been told they have extra tax to pay. "Well, the world does," I tell him, suddenly self-conscious. "It's a special day for daddies."
Something about this — I can't think what — comes out sounding quite desperate and he looks at me as if I've just suggested he prove his love for me with a face tattoo (纹身). It's a look of suspicion, but also of tender concern for my mental state. This is his fifth Father's Day, so I can't help feeling slightly wounded that the concept hasn't stuck with him. I also can't help noting that he has never had any such issue with Mother's Day, which has always seemed to him like common sense.
The event's nearness to his own birthday two weeks from now — is making things more difficult for him to tolerate. It would seem he finds it impolite that the run-up to his special day should be interrupted so close to the finish line by a day that celebrates me, the lesser of his two parents. In any case, if he's planning to make or gift me something, this conversation has been a masterstroke (妙举) of expectation management.
"So, will all daddies get a Father's Day?" he asks. "Yes," I reply, "and this isn't new — it's every year!" I attempt to regulate my voice, but also make it very clear I haven't made this idea up on the spot by myself. "You've been doing it since you were born. And it's been around longer than that. I get things for Granddad every year, too."
At this he stirs himself up. He has never quite stopped being fascinated by the idea that his granddad is my dad, in the same way that I am his.
"What do you get him?" he asks. "Well," I say, "things like CDs or socks — and always a card." At this he seems inspired. "I'll do a card!" he says, brightening.
"You could buy me something, too. . ." I begin, but he is no longer listening, running to grab coloured paper and glittery pens. Not wishing to see this gift to myself a whole week early, I smile and tell him I really shouldn't be watching and get up to leave him to it.
"Yes," he says, just in time for me to see he's actually writing "Dear Granddad" on the page. "Don't tell him!"
(1)、How does the writer feel when explaining Father's Day?A、Suspicious. B、Embarrassed. C、Proud. D、Angry.(2)、What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?A、The son feels desperate because the concept escapes him. B、The writer feels relieved due to his son shows care for dad. C、The son identifies with Mother's Day more than Father's Day. D、A face tattoo to prove a son's love for his father is a common sense.(3)、What's the writer intention to mention Granddad?A、To remind his son that he loves his father. B、To justify the annual celebration of Father's Day. C、To narrow the generation gap between the three. D、To instruct the son how to celebrate Father's Day.(4)、What can we conclude from the passage?A、The writer's son loves granddad more than his dad. B、The writer's son understood the key to Father's Day. C、It's a tradition to make father a card on Father's Day. D、It's a bit of stretch for the writer's son to celebrate Dad. -
20、Regulations for On-campus living
Appliances
Approved appliances for use in students' rooms include: clocks, computers, fans, televisions, lamps and single cup coffee makers without a stay-on heating element.
Students may use the following appliances with care: hair dryers, irons and heating pads.
These appliances may not be used at all in student rooms: gas appliances, electric blankets, candle warmers, non-university-provided air conditioners and refrigerators.
Damage
Students are responsible for the condition of their room and the furniture assigned to that room, a Room Inspection Record must be completed and signed by each student. From this record, hall staff can identify problems and make needed repairs; students also avoid charges for damage done by previous occupants. Students will be charged for any damage found in the room that is not noted on the Room Inspection Record.
Cooking
Because cooking is not permitted in student rooms, each hall has a kitchen or kitchenette for the use of all students. Students must clean up after cooking. This is not the responsibility of housekeeping staff. With the exception of using a microwave oven to heat food, students are not permitted to cook in their rooms.
Pets
Pets can create safety and sanitation (卫生) problems, and therefore, are not permitted in students' rooms. Fish is the only acceptable pet permitted in a room and may not be kept in tanks no longer than 5 gallons. Students who are found with unacceptable pets, whether visiting or owned by them, are facing an initial fine of $100 and a continuing fine of 50 a day per pet. Students receive a written notice when the fine goes into effect. If one week from the date of the written notice the pet is not removed, the student is referred to the Student Court.
(1)、Which of the following items are allowed in student rooms?A、Irons and fridges B、TVs and hair dryers C、Lamps and electric blankets D、Coffee makers and gas appliances(2)、Which of the following is not against regulations?A、Using a microwave to heat food in the room. B、Leaving the trash unremoved after cooking. C、Boiling two eggs in the room. D、Refusing to share the kitchen with others.(3)、If a student has kept a dog in his room for 4 days since the warning, he will face______.A、A fine of $100. B、A fine of $300. C、The Student Court. D、An oral warning
