Denbigh Walking Festival

3rd–11th June

People in Denbigh, North Wales, welcome you to take part in nine days of free guided walks. The area lies between the Welsh mountains and the Dee Valley, with wonderful cross-border scenery. All walks are run by trained volunteer guides and divided into easy, medium and difficult levels.

One freezing winter night, a villager rushed to his small clinic with a flashlight, shouting for help. His 4-year-old daughter had a severe cough and difficulty breathing, and the mountain road was covered with thick snow. Without a moment's hesitation, Dr Chen grabbed (抓起) his medical bag and set off with the villager, walking on the slippery mountain road in the dark. The journey took three hours. When they finally reached the villager's home, Dr Chen was covered in snow and his hands were frozen stiff (僵硬的). But he immediately examined the child, gave her emergency treatment, and stayed by her side all night until her condition stabilized. The next morning, the child could breathe normally and the villager knelt down to thank him with tears in his eyes.

Over the years, Dr Chen has faced many moral dilemmas. Once, a pharmaceutical (制药的) company offered him a large sum of money to prescribe (开药方) their expensive but ineffective medicine. He rejected the offer determinedly, saying, "A doctor's duty is to cure patients, not to make money from their pain." He always prescribes cheap and effective medicine for villagers, and even gives free treatment to poor families.

Now in his late fifties, Dr Chen still walks the mountain roads every day with his medical bag. He has trained three young villagers to be basic medical workers, and he often tells them, "Virtue is not a grand slogan, but every small choice we make to put others' needs before our own." His story has inspired many young people to come to the mountain village to serve the villagers.

Music has a mathematical structure based on relationships between one note and the next. You may not be aware of it, but your brain has to do a lot of computing to make sense of it. So, not surprisingly, listening to music can improve learning, memory, and mental alertness (警觉性). It also boosts concentration and mindfulness (正念), as listening, playing, or moving to music keeps you focused in the present moment and even puts you "in the zone" where you experience the happy state of "flow".

Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain, and improve sleep quality, mood, well-being, and happiness. And especially when moving to music, your brain gets washed in beneficial "feel-good" hormones (激素). So music can potentially extend your life and enhance its quality.

Music is a vital component of culture, and every culture has specific (特定的) types of music created, produced and enjoyed by its people. In the US alone, there are dozens of popular types, including Afro-beat, bluegrass, classical, and country. All these types of music have different origins and are associated with different subcultures (亚文化), but they can be enjoyed by anyone, leading to cross-cultural appreciation and communication. Musical traditions are also connected to cultural celebrations — think about the music you associate with birthdays, graduations, weddings, and so on.

Your music preference in the moment can depend on how you want to feel. You likely pick specific types of music depending on whether you're looking to relax or exercise, trying to be productive or romantic. The right music can promote your mood and motivation to clean up, do homework, or work out. In contrast, you likely avoid music that makes you sad or bored.

Hanukkah is celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish month, which is usually sometime in December. On Hanukkah, like most Jewish families, we light some candles and say a prayer (祈祷) each night. We also say a special prayer on the first night. After that, it is a tradition for my sister and me to do "hot and cold" for our hidden Hanukkah gifts. When we walk towards the gift, our parents say "hot" and when we walk farther away, they say "cold". We each receive one present every night of Hanukkah. Another part I like about this holiday is seeing family members who we do not see often. My aunt usually stays for a few days, and we sometimes visit other relatives.

Diwali is celebrated on the 13th day of the dark fortnight of the month of Ashwin (October/November). To celebrate Diwali, my family does prayers in honor of the goddess Lakshmi. Since she is the goddess of wealth and prosperity (繁荣), the prayers include washing silver coins in milk and water. In India, people decorate their houses with lamps, similar to the way you might light up your house for Christmas. My family just place a few candles outside. We also set off firecrackers, which is my favorite part. We often do this activity with friends to add to the excitement.

Both holidays have different histories and stories. We celebrate them in different ways, yet they both have the same meaning. They both translate into Festival of Lights, and they both mean family and presents for me!
