1、I had started my academic journey as a university instructor in Ethiopia, where I found considerable satisfaction in mentoring (指导) students.
However, the1 opportunities and resources there made it difficult to pursue my own growth, so I went to the United States for my Ph. D. and postdoc. I assumed success meant2 a position at a highly research-related institution.
But during my postdoc, I realized I needed to change my3. I am a father of two daughters, one of whom requires long-term medical care. My modest4 and limited benefits brought me financial instability and emotional5. Professional stress bled into my home life. In turn, the weight of my personal6 made professional setbacks more disastrous. Trapped in this7, I began to reconsider my career path.
I applied to several positions, and was delighted when I started to receive invitations to interview. The campus visits included teaching8, discussions about mentoring, and an emphasis on how I would9 research into a student-centered environment. Such requirements were10 but refreshing, helping confirm that I was heading in the right direction. The students' engagement and curiosity11 my passion for mentorship. And research didn't disappear — perspectives on it12.
I've learned to redefine13 after 2 years into my current position. It isn't14 about high-impact publications or grants (拨款). It's about asking meaningful research questions,15 opportunities for students to grow, and maintaining a balance between professional ambitions and personal well-being.

2、It's common for you to pressure your children to be smarter. Forcing children to study may be the easiest way for them to learn, but not the best way. There are several guidelines you can follow so that your children see studying as a way to acquire new things.
You should always remember you are not a teacher. Although you need to guarantee that your children are completing their homework without any mistakes, you shouldn't do the homework for them. If you do, your children won't be able to address their own issues and will always depend on others for help.
Besides, be cautious about rewarding children for good grades. If you abuse this, your children will only attempt to study for a reward. Getting bad grades, they'll feel like a failure. Thus, it's better to praise your children when they pass a test. This way, they'll see their mistakes as opportunities to improve and not see themselves as failures.
If you only spare no efforts to force your children to study, both you and they will be frustrated. Therefore, place emphasis on devoting time to other activities that are fundamental to your children's development, like playing sports and watching movies.
Some parents hold the belief that mental disorders lead to children's lack of interest in study. It's very likely that their children are simply demotivated or disinterested. Therefore, it's good to take the above tips into account. As a result, your children may find a genuine desire to study and do their own homework.
A. That's not necessarily the case.
B. It is teachers' duty to correct homework mistakes.
C. You may enroll them in various after-class courses.
D. If not, patiently show them how to do better next time.
E. Instead, offer them guidance and tools to do self-research.
F. Vital as study is, it's not the only thing kids must focus on.
G. Even if they fail in exams, you'd better control your temper.

3、Symbolic interactionism is a sociological perspective that examines how individuals use symbols to communicate and create social reality. Founded by sociologists like George Herbert Mead and Charles Horton Cooley, the theory focuses on micro-level interactions between individuals, emphasizing the importance of symbols in these exchanges. Unlike other sociological perspectives that focus on larger structures, symbolic interactionism looks at how individual actions shape social structures through meaning-making processes.
It suggests that individuals act based on the meanings they attach to objects, people, and situations. These meanings, in turn, are constructed and improved through social interactions. Symbols, such as language, gestures, and objects, are central to this process, as they provide the medium through which individuals understand and interpret the social world.
A symbol, in the context of symbolic interactionism, is anything that carries meaning beyond its literal form. It could be a word, gesture, object, or even a social role. Symbols are not naturally meaningful; rather, their meanings are socially constructed and learned through interaction. For example, a handshake is not just a physical act but a symbol of greeting, agreement, or friendship in many cultures. Compared with saying hello, shaking hands has more unexpected effects.
Symbols are essential for human communication and interaction. They allow individuals to convey complex ideas, emotions, and intentions in a way that is understood by others. Language, for instance, is a system of symbols that allows people to communicate abstract concepts like love, justice, and freedom. Without symbols, human interaction would be limited to immediate, visible experiences.
One of the most important ways symbols function in social interaction is through the construction of identity. Individuals employ symbols to express who they are and how they relate to the world around them. The clothes one wears are symbols, which signal one's profession, social status, or even personal beliefs and preferences. For example, a doctor's white coat symbolizes medical authority, while a business suit might symbolize professionalism.
So have you got the magic of symbols?
(1)、What's the function of Paragraph 1?A、To explain how to relate to others. B、To define symbolic interactionism. C、To tell how symbolic interactionism formed. D、To compare varied sociological perspectives.(2)、What does the author imply about symbols?A、They indicate how humans feel. B、Their meanings remain the same. C、Their forms are coined by humans. D、They strengthen what words convey.(3)、What would happen without symbols?A、Costs of comprehension would rise. B、Social justice would no longer exist. C、Human interaction would be ceased. D、People would become caged birds.(4)、Which conduct can reveal the identity of symbols' users?A、A rich employer lights a cigarette. B、Policemen gesture to direct traffic. C、Students paint on school uniforms. D、A doctor raises money for patients. -
4、Google used its artificial intelligence-powered weather forecasting tools to precisely predict floods up to a week in advance of them happening. In a new paper published in the scientific journal Nature, Google's researchers describe this as an early warning system that could be used throughout the world, not only to predict or recognize natural disasters but also to buffer the worst effects of what is one of the most common types of natural disasters.
Flooding can be difficult to accurately predict, particularly riverine floods, due to a lack of resources and data related to flood history, water levels, and terrain (地形). AI use in weather forecasting is nothing new. Still, the rise of more powerful processors and larger data sets is allowing for new scales of prediction, including a new Nvidia digital Earth.
A small percentage of global rivers have streamflow gauges (测量仪) which can be used to warn people if the volume of water flowing through the river changes. When combined with other points such as the local terrain, settlements near the river, weather forecasting, and historical events on the same river, data can be used to predict flooding. Google researchers gathered as much global data as they could access and trained new AI models to analyze them. Afterwards, those models could then make predictions for those regions where data might be considerably limited or even nonexistent.
The team launched a Flood Hub platform, which provided access to forecasts in 20countries where flood forecasting had been difficult in the past. The platform collected seemingly unrelated information which was available locally, fed it into the AI system as a reminder, and ordered the AI to fill in the gaps and then classify data. So far Flood Hub has been expanded to 80 countries in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europea, and the Americas, covering over 460 million people globally, particularly those in communities suffering from flooding. "Where possible, we also provide forecasts in Google Search and Google Maps and via Android warnings." the Google team declared.
(1)、What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 1?A、Dismiss. B、Relieve. C、Perceive. D、Track.(2)、Why is it hard to predict flooding?A、Relevant records are absent. B、Gauges are far from precise. C、AI is new to weather forecasting. D、Former studies are of little worth.(3)、What can we know about flooding-forecasting AI models?A、They are accessible to global data. B、They are very quick in data analysis. C、They can ensure the reliability of data. D、They can break geographical limitations.(4)、What does Paragraph 4 focus on about Flood Hub platform?A、Its designing principles. B、Its operating difficulties. C、Its dilemma and application. D、Its mechanism and popularity. -
5、I have to say it is rather uncommon for males of my age to be classical music enthusiasts. I was not born into a musical family and neither of my parents learned classical music. There wasn't much music in my home either. So, how did it all start?
The story dates back to the times when I was in kindergarten, which has classical music CDs to offer parents. Thinking that it wouldn't be a bad idea to get me some music to listen to, my parents ordered them without any ambition of developing an interest in classical music or whatsoever. Without knowing who Bach, Vivaldi and Chopin were or what to expect, I just played the CDs one after one and grew increasingly fond of them.
What took place meanwhile was my piano studies, which again exposed me to classical music. But I have to admit the beginner pieces sounded rather uninspired and dull to me. Thanks to YouTube, I was able to explore more than what my first piano teacher offered — from piano to orchestral music, from Bach to Scriabin. Very often, I didn't practise the pieces my teacher assigned, but the pieces I truly loved! It's also through the Internet that I discovered one of my piano idols later, Grigory Sokolov. Later on, I became interested in not only the music itself, but also composers and music history.
I still remember in a 28-day outdoor program in Australia organized by my high school, we weren't allowed to use our mobile phones and there wasn't any piano either. What I could only do was to repeatedly recall Chopin's Preludes (前奏曲) Op. 28 when walking up the hills. I felt peaceful as usual, but even happier with growing enthusiasm for music.
To me, classical music explores the deepest emotions of humanity but can be so humorous as well. The magic of it lies in its ability to cast light on aspects of human conditions and, at the same time, to go beyond the reality.
(1)、What do we know about the author's parents?A、They knew nothing about music. B、They had to purchase music CDs. C、They never pushed him to love music. D、They rarely valued his creating talent.(2)、What can be inferred from the author's piano studies?A、Online resources benefited him a lot. B、Music history seemed more inviting. C、He recognized the teacher's advice. D、The piano classes made him sleepy.(3)、Why does the author mention the 28-day outdoor program?A、To stress his eagerness to sing. B、To show his passion for music. C、To complain about its strict rules. D、To prove music's role in calming.(4)、What does the author think of classical music?A、It focuses on poetic lyrics. B、It escapes from the reality. C、It gives insights into life. D、It is a peace-seeking art. -
