• 1、When reflecting on the shift from childhood to adulthood, many of us often go over the memories that have shaped our lives. Among these memories, there is usually one teacher who remains1 even after many years have passed. These outstanding2 can make a lasting influence on us whether it is positive or negative. However, in my personal recollection, the teacher I3 had an exceptionally profound and positive influence on me.

Mrs Stacks, my fourth-grade teacher, left a lasting4 on me. She had her own5 set of rules and a delightful sense of humor that made her class inviting. Mrs Stacks was good at6 us with interactive lessons, such as taking us to the school garden to7 the butterfly life cycle.

One memory that8 to me is that our teacher, Mrs Stacks, would9 spelling bees on Thursdays to help us remember our spelling words. What was10 remarkable about these bees was that every single person in the class11 at least a "B" on their spelling test the following day.

I believe the reason for Mrs Stacks'12 among students was rooted in her genuine love and care towards us. Whenever we performed well, she would13 and motivate us to excel even more. The influence she had on my life as an unforgettable teacher is14. I long to one day have the same profound15 on my own future students just like Mrs Stacks had on me.

  • 2、As a high school student, you're likely used to learning through reading textbooks. This lies at the heart of   "experiential appreciation", a philosophy that encourages you to engage directly with the world around you. It's about learning from real-life experiences, and discovering a more profound and engaging way to learn.

To practice experiential appreciation, you can start by getting involved in hands-on activities related to your subjects. They will provide a firsthand understanding of the concepts you're studying, making learning active and meaningful. So, try joining a sports team, picking up a paintbrush, or taking part in a local charity event.

As you dive deeper, immerse yourself fully in the surroundings and activities. When you're in nature, don't just look around. Touching the leaves, feeling the wind and listening to the birds can enrich your learning and make each moment more memorable.

After trying something new, ask yourself what you learned and how it made you feel. Write in a journal or discuss it with friends. This self-discovery turns experiences into life lessons and offers a deeper understanding of the world.

Experiential appreciation transforms learning from a task to be completed into a journey to be treasured. So, explore the world around you, let every experience shape you, and discover the endless possibilities that await. This is the core of true learning, where every moment is a step towards a richer, more enlightened life.

    A. It extends learning far beyond textbooks.

    B. Now consider expanding your learning from just reading to actively participating.

    C. Instead, activate your senses for a stronger tie with it.

    D. Mind the impact of your actions on the environment.

    E. Take your experiences further by reflecting on them.

    F. Textbooks offer a systematic introduction to essential concepts and principles.

    G. These activities bring learning to life.

  • 3、With the development of modern technology, drones are being applied to various fields. Drone light shows are becoming especially popular in the West. By now, if you live on the U. S. East or West Coasts, you've probably been troubled by wildfire smoke. The fires are increasing in frequency and intensity as climate change worsens. And fireworks, as you can guess from their name, cause fires—more than you might think.

That's what caused a handful of California towns to quit fireworks and turn to drones last year. Sydney, Australia, known for its massive fireworks display, is considering doing the same due to the risk of wildfires. And fire danger is now top of mind for many U. S. cities as the Independence Day, or the American national day, nears.

In addition to reducing the risk of fires, drone light shows present a safer alternative for the folks behind the curtain. Fireworks injured more than 10,000 people last year because they can accidentally erupt while on the ground. Drones won't. And since light shows are required to keep the ground below the show clear, there's no risk of a drone falling from the sky into the crowd.

Drones are also less disturbing, creating only a light buzzing noise. Fireworks, on the other hand, can burst your eardrum if you're standing close enough. That's a nuisance for some families with animals, small children, or other people who are sensitive to noise.

But perhaps the biggest reason for the switch to drones is that they're thought to be more eco-friendly. Apart from starting fires, firework smoke leaves behind a trail of harmful chemicals and is considered a pollutant. Drones are also a reusable option, capable of flying potentially hundreds of shows before they even require maintenance. That's a huge benefit to the environment—and to the companies paying to put on these performances.

At the end of the day, though, some cities are likely switching to drones simply because they're cooler. That's not to say that fireworks aren't cool. But drones allow for more creativity, with the ability to synchronize(同步) lights to music and recreate complex images in the sky.

Nevertheless, it's still too early to rush to the conclusion that drones will completely take the place of fireworks in the near future.

(1)、What are the reasons why some cities give up fireworks?
A、They are too expensive. B、They are not cool any more. C、They speed up climate change. D、They may pose fire risks.
(2)、What method does the author use to demonstrate the advantages of drones in paragraph 3?
A、By referring to data from previous studies. B、By analyzing causes and effects. C、By making a comparison. D、By giving a definition.
(3)、What does the underlined word "nuisance" in paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A、Reward. B、Attraction. C、Annoyance. D、Instance.
(4)、What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A、The similarities shared by drones and fireworks. B、The potential challenges drones will face. C、The importance of drones in promoting economy. D、The strong competition from companies in different industries.
  • 4、Cats perform better than human babies on a simple measure of language comprehension. The research, published Oct. 4 in the journal Scientific Reports, revealed that. Research in the past five years has shown that cats can recognize not only their own names but those of familiar humans and animals. But can they associate words and objects more generally?

To test this theory, Saho Takagi and her team gave 31 adult cats a simple word game used to investigate the same ability in human babies. The cats were shown two nine-second cartoon clips (电影片段) with recordings of their owners repeating a made-up word over each image. The two clips-a red sun labeled "paramo" and a blue unicorn with the word "keraru"-were repeated until the cats appeared to get bored and paid 50% less attention to the screen.

After a short break, the image clips were repeated, but this time, half of the pairings were switched. The switched clips visibly affected the cats, with recordings of "paramo" alongside the unicorn and "keraru" with the sun holding their interest an average of 15% longer. That the cats noticed this change and were clearly perplexed by it is good evidence that they had formed a link between the words and images, written in the study.

The experiment revealed that the cats were able to learn the combinations from just two nine-second exposures - significantly faster than babies, who required at least four 20-second trials.

However, these comparisons should not be overinterpreted. "You're comparing an adult animal with an immature animal from a different species," said Dr. Carlo Siracusa, an animal behaviorist at the University of Pennsylvania. "Moreover, a certain number of the cats have to be excluded, so there's already a bias (偏见)-not a fault of the research. Interacting with cats in the experiment is no easy task." he added. Despite its limitations, the study does show that cats are capable of forming picture-word associations, the team wrote in the paper, although whether this is an inborn ability or a product of domestication remains a mystery.

(1)、Why did Saho Takagi and her team carry out the experiment?
A、To test cats' recognition of familiar names. B、To explore cats' word-object association ability. C、To reveal cats' secret of language understanding. D、To compare cats' memory with that of human babies.
(2)、What is presented in paragraph 2?
    A、Data collection. B、Result analysis. C、Practical examples. D、Experimental methods.
(3)、What does the underlined word "perplexed" in paragraph 3 mean?
    A、Attracted. B、Surprised. C、Frightened. D、Confused.
(4)、What is one limitation of the study, as mentioned by Dr. Carlo Siracusa?
A、It's difficult to engage cats. B、There're not enough clips involved. C、The cats tested are chosen randomly. D、Similarities between species are ignored.
  • 5、The last time I visited my parents, I borrowed a novel from the shelves in my old bedroom. The books there once belonged to me, but over the decades, my father has taken over the space. It's fitting.

I grew up in a house full of books, free to explore anything, as long as I returned it. But that's harder now. My parents, in their 80s, still live in Manhattan, while I'm in Los Angeles. The book I grabbed was a novel by S. A. Cosby. At first, I was surprised my father knew of him, but why not? For as long as I can remember, he's been a regular at his neighborhood bookstore. He used to say he wouldn't mind aging as long as he could read. Even now, I often find him with a book, though I fear he's begun to fall out of the narrative (叙述).

I didn't read the book until I was back in Southern California. I didn't want my father to know I had the book. I didn't want him to feel any stress about it, though the two of us have been talking books ever since I was 12. I didn't want to know what he might or might not recall.

Opening it felt like opening a conversation with my father, retracing his steps and reading through his eyes. I enjoyed the novel, though that's beside the point. What struck me most was a plotline about feeling sad for one's parents, a process I'm beginning to understand. When I finished, I ran my fingers over my father's mark on the cover, those letters he'd pressed into the cover with a hand-held metal press, spelling out a name the same as mine. Then I slipped the book into my suitcase, certain to return it next time I visit.

(1)、Why is it fitting for the father to take over the author's old space?
A、Because both are attached to reading. B、Because the father loves collecting books. C、Because the author's books are preserved there. D、Because the father needs space for bookshelves.
(2)、Why did the author not want his father to know he had the book?
A、To put the book into his own collection. B、To avoid pressure on his father to discuss it. C、To free his father from too much reading. D、To maintain a sense of privacy in reading.
(3)、How did the author feel while reading Cosby's novel?
A、Inspired by the plotline. B、Connected to his father. C、Eager to share with others. D、Surprised at his father's mark.
(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A、Returning Home B、Love through Pages C、The Power of Books D、My Father, a Great Reader
  • 6、As a baby, Jack's remarkable swimming journey began. At ten months, he already practised with swim aids. At six, he won his first swimming competition in a group for kids ten-and-under. At seven, he stayed at the pool from nine in the morning till eight hours later. His mother, recognizing his gift, took it as her duty to guide him. By a young age, Jack had been ranked the number one swimmer of the country, a title he held for a record-breaking duration.

He played skiing, tennis, soccer, and many more. Sam was a kid who loved to play, and his parents had no particular athletic ambitions for him. It was nearing his teens that he began to focus more on basketball. In his mid-thirties, an age by which many professional basketball players are typically retired, Sam was still in the national basketball team.

Top athletes like Jack at the peak of their abilities do spend more time on focused, deliberate practice than their peers (同龄人). But scientists also find that potential champions typically devote less time to deliberate practice in childhood, but more to "sampling" various activities.

In a world that demands people to specialize early, we face a challenge to keep the benefits of diverse experiences and delayed concentration. There's a need for those with Jack's early focus. — People who start with many different things and accept various experiences. People with range.

    A. There was no time to waste.

    B. And it was all going according to plan.

    C. The growing complexity of the world also calls for more Sams.

    D. But it didn't seem to hold back his development in the long run.

    E. In reality, the Sam's path to success is far more common, yet less told.

    F. In contrast to Jack, Sam didn't show significant sporting talent until later.

    G. Unlike the swimming talent, Sam's early years were filled with a variety of sports.

  • 10、Everyone knows that fish is good for health. But it seems that many people don't cook fish at home. Americans eat only about fifteen pounds of fish per person per year, but we eat twice as much fish in restaurants as at home. Buying, storing, and cooking fish isn't difficult. This text is about how to buy and cook fish in an easy way.

Fresh fish should smell sweet: you should feel that you're standing at the ocean's edge. Any fishy or strong smell means the fish isn't fresh. When you have bought a fish and arrive home, you'd better store the fish in the refrigerator if you don't cook it immediately, but fresh fish should be stored in your fridge for only a day or two. Frozen fish isn't as tasty as the fresh one.

There are many common methods used to cook fish. First, clean it and season it with your choice of spices (调料). Put the whole fish on a plate and steam it in a steam pot for 8 to 10 minutes if it weighs about one pound. (A larger one will take more time.) Then, it's ready to serve.

    A. Do not buy it.

    B. The easiest is to steam it.

    C. It just requires a little knowledge.

    D. When buying fish, you should first smell it.

    E. The fats in fish are thought to help prevent heart disease.

  • 11、The Search-for-Lost-Birds list has come to public attention recently. It lists ten kinds of birds that have not been seen in the wild for at least fifteen years. The list is calling on people to search for the rarest (最珍稀的) birds on Earth.

There could be several reasons for the long disappearances of the birds on the list. Maybe there have been no studies in areas where they live. Maybe people don't know where or how to find them. Maybe there are changes to their natural homes because of human activities.

This year, four expeditions (考察队) are planning to find eight kinds of birds. If any of these lost birds are found, ways can be found to protect them and help their populations grow. This has happened with birds like the Madagascar pochard. The number of this once-lost kind of bird is now increasing.

  • 12、Boris, a foreign student at Communication University of China, often shares his experiences of Chinese culture on his vlog (视频博客).

In one video, for example, Boris shared how he had learned the Chinese word dongxi. He translated each part separately into "east west". And he introduced one theory (说法) about how dongxi came to mean "things". He told people that all marketplaces in ancient Chinese cities were set up along a single road that ran from east to west. So when you would say "qu mai dongxi". you'd be saying, "I'm going to buy things."

Some other videos show his reading Chinese poems and performing kung fu in Chinese traditional costume, which are quite welcome among his 40, 000 followers.

"Many of my followers are learning Chinese," Boris said. "But sadly, they know little about Chinese culture and the country."

Like many foreigners, Boris once believed that all Chinese could perform kung fu, flying onto roofs and walking over walls. He thought the country was not that developed. But after he got a scholarship (奖学金) to study in China in 2019, his view changed. "China has entered a new period, but many people's impressions of China are still stuck in the1970s," Boris said. "That's why I started to shoot vlogs to share Chinese culture in 2019."

Until now, Boris has posted more than 40 Chinese culture vlogs online. But making these vlogs is not easy. Take reading the poem Second Farewell to Cambridge by Xu Zhimo as an example.

"I can understand and read every word in the poem," Boris said. "But to touch readers, I need to use proper feelings while reading." So he needed to look for much background information and make his feelings suit each part of the poem.

Though shooting these vlogs takes lots of time, the young man feels proud that his vlogs have inspired many people. Boris said that he wanted to continue bridging the differences between two cultures. "This goal may not be achieved easily, but I will spare no efforts to do my part."

(1)、What does Boris mainly share on his vlog?
A、His daily life in China. B、His experiences of Chinese culture. C、His study progress at Communication University of China. D、His travels around China.
(2)、How did Boris understand the meaning of the Chinese word "dongxi"?
A、By asking his Chinese friends. B、By translating it literally as "east west". C、By researching ancient Chinese dictionaries. D、By observing ancient Chinese marketplaces.
(3)、What does Boris think about foreigners' impressions of China?
A、They are mostly correct. B、They are outdated and stuck in the past. C、They are too optimistic. D、They are too negative.
(4)、What challenge did Boris face when reading the poem Second Farewell to Cambridge by Xu Zhimo?
A、Understanding the poem's meaning. B、Pronouncing the Chinese characters correctly. C、Expressing the poem's emotions properly. D、Finding the poem's background information.
    (5)、What is Boris' final goal?
A、To become a famous vlogger. B、To improve his Chinese language skills. C、To bridge the cultural differences between China and his home country. D、To promote Chinese culture to the world.

I had always thought of my neighborhood as a peaceful and friendly place. However, all that changed when Mr. Thompson moved in next door. He was a middle-aged man who seemed to have a rather strange lifestyle.

At first, I didn't pay much attention to him. But one day, I noticed that his car was always parked in a way that blocked part of my driveway. It was really inconvenient, especially when I was in a hurry to go to work or pick up my kids from school. I politely asked him to be more careful with his parking, but he just gave me a cold look and said he would do so as he was pleased. This made me get cross with him.

As time went by, more problems arose. Mr. Thompson had a big dog that barked loudly day and night. I could barely have a sound sleep, and my kids were also disturbed by the noise. I tried to talk to him about the dog, but he refused to listen. He even accused me of being too sensitive.

One evening, I came home from a long-day work, extremely worn out. Just as I was about to park my car, I found that Mr. Thompson's car was once again blocking my driveway. I was so frustrated that I knocked on his door forcefully. After seemed a long time, the door opened. There stood Mr. Thompson with an indifferent look on his face. Words were exchanged, and both of us were angry. We had a heated argument. He even slammed the door shut right in front of me. After that, we didn't talk to each other for weeks. My once proud and friendly neighborhood ties are gone.

One day, as I was mowing the lawn(修剪草坪)in my garden, I saw Mr. Thompson struggling to carry a heavy box along his driveway.

Michael Bock, a 62-year-old baker from Germany, presents the art of traditional bread in China. His Bakery in Beijing is neither brightly colored that seems beautiful, is it located in a busy downtown area, but authentic German bread baked attracts customers from all over the city.

Bock's father was a baker, but he did not wish for his son to follow in his footsteps. "Being a baker (mean) getting up early every day, hands in lye (碱水), carrying a 10-kg bag of flour…" Bock told Beijing Review.

Eager to work his own hands, Bock still chose the road that was foretold to be hard (resolute). At the age of 15, he became a young bread apprentice (学徒). To become a qualified professional baker in Germany, one must undergo occupational education and training, with learning skills both at school and on the job (need).

"Every week, I spent one day studying profession-related(theory) knowledge. The rest of the days, I would spend in a company learning practical knowledge and work-related regulations. After completing the corresponding hours of work and training, apprentices are required to take an examination they can become a bakery worker." Bock said.

To his delight, he has not lost popularity due to this " (rigid)". Instead, the bakery has attracted many faithful Chinese customers (have) a preference for German bread. "It has made me more convinced about my choice." he said.
