My daughter Gina was in Mrs. Melton's fourth-grade class. After only a month in school, she began to come home on a regular basis asking for pencils, crayons, paper, etc. At first I just provided whatever she needed, never questioning her.

After ongoing requests for objects that should have easily lasted a mere six weeks of fourth grade, I became worried and asked her, "Gina, what are you doing with your school items?" Knowing her excuses would no longer work, she lowered her head and began to cry. I lifted her tiny chin (下巴) and looked into those big brown eyes, filled now with tears. I waited for what seemed like a year for her to answer. "Mom," she began, "there is a boy in my class; he doesn't have any of the items he needs to do his work. The other kids make fun of him because his papers are in a mess and he only has two crayons to color with. I have been putting the new items you bought me in his desk before the others come in, so he doesn't know it's me. Please don't get mad at me, Mom. I didn't mean to tell you a lie, but I didn't want anyone to know it was me."

My heart sank as I stood there in disbelief. She had taken on the role of an adult and tried to hide it like a child. I knelt down and hugged her to me, not wanting her to see my own tears. On the one hand, there are many different groups of people around the world who live happily without new technology. Probably the most well-known are the Christians living in rural America. They do not own or drive cars, watch TV, or use the Internet. They advocate (提倡) a simple life with an emphasis on hard work, family, and community. They think that is better than caring about luxuries or following the lives of the rich and famous. It could even be argued that the Amish's, quality of life is better since they live in and appreciate the natural environment rather than living in large, polluted cities.

On the other hand, new technology has provided people everywhere with many benefits over the years. For example, the latest weather-tracking computer programmes give people lots of warnings about potential natural disasters, which saves many lives. Moreover, the Internet has made it possible for friends and family to keep in touch easily even if they are on opposite sides of the world.

Personally, I have benefited quite a lot from technological advances. I found my career as an AI designer through a social media network. My health monitor, which I wear all the time, has also helped me get into the best shape of my life. Of course, when new technology changes the way we live, it can be a scary prospect. However, I will always look on the bright side of change and accept it rather than resist it.

Music has often helped Nobel winners think and process scientific information in a new way. Albert Einstein was influenced by his mother who taught him to play the violin at a very early age. He was especially fond of Mozart, Bach and Schubert. For Einstein, music worked as a brainstorming technique to help him reflect on his theories and solve difficulties he met with. Einstein's scientific ideas were often firstly created in the shape of images and intuition (直觉), which music later helped to turn into mathematics, logic (逻辑) and words.

Besides helping them reflect on scientifically complex problems, music has helped Nobel winners learn discipline and the importance of a creative mind. Furthermore, the cooperation between the members of a music band can be compared with the team effort found within a research group. According to Medicine winner James Allison, it is necessary in both fields to build a team where each individual makes their own contribution to the overall work. However, it is important that the communication between the members work so smoothly that each individual also knows what needs to be done to achieve breakthroughs. As James Allison states, "Every now and then my lab has been as well tuned—it feels like a really good band"—the concept of great team work leading to great success can be applied to both science and music.

Solomon, who won 13 gold medals in swimming in the Deaflympics, would never forget that polluted river near her house. A career in science and environmental studies became her passion. But she also found another passion (热情): "How can I influence other deaf and hard-of-hearing students?"

It was a question based on Solomon's own experience as a college student, first as an undergraduate (本科生) at Harvard, then as a graduate student at the University of Washington.   These were schools where she was usually the only deaf person in the class.

Training the next generation of biologists who happen to be deaf has become Solomon's goal, and for that she has received high praise at Gallaudet. Not because she's an especially gifted teacher, but because she has learned how to get her students to focus on what they're capable of not what they're limited by.
