Erik's uphill journey began after he lost his sight to a rare eye disease at age 14. Feeling down, he participated in a climbing program for the visually disabled. He loved the sport. To him, climbing was like a fun puzzle. He felt his way over the rocks. His hands and feet led him along.

Erik continued to climb throughout his teens. Later, as an adult, he reached higher and higher. He climbed the tallest mountains in North America, Africa, South America, and Antarctica. In 2001, Erik was part of a group that climbed Mount Everest. It's not just the tallest mountain in Asia—it's the highest spot in the world! He was the first blind person to reach the peak.

But, for Erik, that wasn't the high point of the trip. Coming down, he understood something important. Climbing taught him many lessons and he wanted to "bring them down the mountain". He wanted to use the lessons to help other people.

That's why he started No Barriers in 2005. The group helps individuals who are facing challenges, whether physical or emotional. Erik teaches people they can do great things if they work together. Why? The group's motto explains: What's within you is stronger than what's in your way.

A survey published earlier this year showed 53.1 percent of the public are excited about, 26 percent are pleasantly surprised at, and 11 percent hold relatively negative views about AI development. Behind this overall optimism is a hands-on understanding that AI, like mobile Internet, will be the next step in "technology transforming life".

Of course, technological progress has always been a double-edged sword. As people increasingly rely on AI for cognition (认知), uniquely human critical thinking and creativity may degenerate, leading to a divided world where human intelligence declines while machine intelligence rockets. A study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology found AI users had weaker neural connections, while those using no tools showed the strongest and most distributed neural links.

Despite possible bumps ahead, AI's advance will not pause. More importantly, as the continuation of IT revolutions (革命) and a pioneer of new tech-industrial transformations, AI has become a strategic high point in global competition. An innovation powerhouse would not allow hesitation to result in missed opportunities.

Emerging technologies always cause uncertainty. As a revolutionary force, AI will greatly reshape societal and economic logic. The need now is to fasten our seat belts while embracing the advance.

Gray wolves are native to the Northern Hemisphere. They once numbered in the millions in North America. Many also lived in northern Africa and southern Asia. Then, people began hunting wolves. They nearly disappeared. They did disappear in some US states.

In Oregon, wolves were extinct in the 1940s. This was because wolves were killing livestock. Then came the Endangered Species Act which was passed in 1973. The act offered protection to animals in danger of dying out. This included gray wolves. They could no longer be killed in the lower 48 US states. Over the years, many states also gave the wolves protection.

In time, gray wolves started coming back. Some were brought to the US from Canada, while others moved on their own. Oregon saw its first wolf in 50 years in 1999. State leaders created the Oregon Wolf Plan. They wanted the wolf population to grow. Under the 2005 plan, wolves could not be shot. What if they attacked livestock? Ranchers (牧场主)could hire range riders to watch their land. They could put up fences or alarms.

The plan helped. In 2008, Oregon welcomed its first wolf pups born in the state in nearly 60 years. In 2015, there were 81 adult gray wolves living in Oregon. Leaders decided to delist the gray wolf.

Ranchers are happy with the vote. In fact, they want more changes. Ranchers want to be able to shoot wolves that attack livestock.

But the vote angered others. Oregon environmentalists say gray wolves still need protection. They believe 81 wolves are not enough. The species may still die out.

For years, this has been a source of debate. Now, more US school districts are beginning to take the advice of scientists who advocate that asking teens to show up to class before 8:00 a.m. isn't good for their health or study.

In fact, research from countries around the world confirms that teens who get enough sleep are healthier overall. Studies indicate that delaying school start time is a key factor in helping teens improve their academic performance.

However, why don't all high schools start later? In the US, public schools in St. Paul, Minnesota, delayed the adoption of later start time for all its high school students because of transportation issues. "It would have cost about $8 million to buy the needed buses," explained Jackie Statum Allen, assistant director for strategic planning and policy. "It would be much better to put that money into the classroom rather than the gas tank," Allen explained.

Moreover, not all teens favor a later school day. Many are concerned that a later school day will cause problems. Students may have less time for after-school jobs, athletics, or other extracurricular activities.

Madison was a daydreamer. Looking out the classroom window, she watched a bird flying freely in the sky. It must be wonderful to be a bird, she thought. Just fly across the sky without a care in the world. Total freedom. No math class to sit in. She sighed and wondered how warm it was outside.
