From Paper-cutting Art to Movies
Chinese paper-cutting is a very old Chinese art. People cut paper into shapes of people and animals. These are still pictures, just like photos.

Then artists made puppets(木偶). They put a light behind the puppets and a white screen(银幕) in front. When they move the puppets, their shadows(影子) move on the screen. This is called shadow puppetry(皮影戏). It tells stories like an old movie.

In 1958, the first paper-cutting cartoon Piggy Eats Watermelon came out.In this cartoon, paper-cutting characters(人物) move and talk on the screen.

Later, people made real movies. Cameras take many photos quickly. The photos play fast to show action. They also use montage(蒙太奇) to put different scenes(场景) together. This helps tell stories better.
