We're often told "laughter is the best medicine".Laughter is ancient and instinctual,and a fundamental part of everyday life—something most of us enjoy naturally.There are comedy channels on TV,comedy festivals and our favorite funny friend who's sure to get our giggle on.

So why do we need laughter experts?Surely they're for people who can't laugh for whatever reason.However,while the ability to laugh is innate,the decision to activate and use it to its full ability is a choice.

When life gets stressful;illness creeps in;relationships are put to the test or we're struggling financially,there's rarely much to laugh about.So,we don't.Yet turning into the lighter,more humorous side of life,and activating one's "laughter self" is critical to mental health.Rather than waiting for something funny to happen or for life to be a bed of roses,we can transform our emotional state by tapping into our laughter and humor resources.This helps create distance between us and our pain and improve our moods and resilience(恢复力) to stress.It provides relief and release from some of the stress that has embedded in our bodies and minds,freeing ourselves to power forward,even a little.

Ironically,because laughter is an innate and largely unconscious behavior,it's rarely given much thought.As it's seldom thought about,it can't be that important.

Wrong.If laughing is a more complex behavior,my belief is people will pay greater honor to it,rather than something to laugh off.It's actually one of the most complicated things our bodies process.It is a vocal means of communication before language forms and the brain has fully developed.The vast majority of us maintain the ability to laugh until our final curtain falls,even amid declining cognitive function.

Turning toward the healing power of humor and laughter assists with personal and professional resilience,performance and overall well-being.No joke.

Nobody likes an old idiot(傻子).Developing a sense of humor is part of becoming a mature,emotionally healthy individual.Laughter is good for the soul,which builds friendships and relieves stress.It serves as the glue for social situations and as an ice-breaker for sadness and boredom.If you've ever been told to "lighten up" or "chill out",you should save the blue attitude for serious situations and develop your sense of humor.

Forgive the accident.A sudden fall is humorous not because we like to see people fall,but because it surprises us.From a spilled water glass in a meeting to Aunt Rae's teeth coming off in the Thanksgiving Day,the embarrassment of accidents can be relieved by humor and a helping hand.After making sure that nobody is hurt,forgive accidents with a chuckle(咯咯地笑) rather than a scolding.

Look for the unexpected.The kid who used to look at you with his eyes closed during a test had the idea.Parents who serve green eggs and ham to their children on graduation day get the idea.Unexpected action lightens the atmosphere and relaxes people.

Learn to laugh with your kids.Most of what children say and do is funny.Help them learn that accidents are sometimes funny and sometimes occasions for joining in and helping another human being.By sharing laughs and attempting to explain humor,you develop your sense of humor,as well as help kids develop their own sense of humor.

Insect numbers have decreased by half in some parts of the world due to climate change and intensive agriculture,a study has found.The combined pressures of global heating and farming are driving a "substantial decline" of insects across the globe,according to the UK researchers.

Lead researcher,Dr Charlie Outhwaite of UCL,said losing insect populations could be harmful not only to the natural environment,but to human health and food security,particularly with losses of pollinators(传粉昆虫)."Our findings highlight the urgency of actions to preserve natural habitats,slow the expansion of high-intensity agriculture,and cut emissions to reduce climate change," she added.

In the latest study,the researchers pulled together data on the range and number of nearly 20,000 insect species,including bees,ants,butterflies,grasshoppers and dragonflies,at about 6,000 different locations.In areas with high-intensity agriculture and substantial warming,insect numbers have decreased by 49%,compared with relatively untouched places that have so far avoided the most severe impacts of climate change,according to the research published in Nature.

But the researchers said there was some cause for hope.Setting aside areas of land for nature creates a refuge(庇护所) for insects,which need shade to survive in hot weather."Careful management of agricultural areas,such as preserving natural habitats near farmland,may help to ensure that vital insects can still survive," said Dr Tim Newbold,also of UCL.

Study researcher,Peter McCann,added,"We need to acknowledge how important insects are for the environment as a whole,and for human health and well being,in order to address the threats we pose to them before many species are lost forever."
