It's strange, but I don't really remember much about the hurricane itself. It all happened so quickly. I was sitting in my room with my cat, Smartie, on my lap, when the roof just f off. All of a sudden, there was sky  the roof had been. I was so frightened that I just froze.

At first, I was pleased we could stay at home, but soon it got really tough.  a roof, staying inside was too dangerous. There was water everywhere, but we couldn't drink any of it otherwise we'd get really sick. It was August, so it was really, really hot and it smelled so bad everywhere! I just spent the days watching the boats going up and down the street and 1 out for Smartie. He had disappeared  moment the storm hit.

Living in the open air, we became breakfast, lunch and dinner for the m. But Mom said that whatever happens, we should always try to see the good side of things. It was difficult to stay p, though. We had lost our home and everything in it, including Smartie. All we had left were the clothes on our backs. But as Mom kept on reminding us, we were all together and safe. Mom's words made us feel better. I remember us all lying under the midnight sky and looking up at the stars.

Although it was only a few days before we were r, it felt like months. We were taken to another town in a faraway county. T, Smartie came home just in time. We were so happy to take him with us, although then, none of us knew that we wouldn't be back for quite a while.

Now, one year has passed and I'm back home in New Orleans. Some families have yet to return, but many others have come back. Although we are surrounded by r of the disaster, we are working together to rebuild our homes and our lives. Now we have another chance to look up at the stars of New Orleans, their beauty inspiring us and giving us confidence to move on.

In the fall of 1522, a leaky ship made port in Spain with 18 tired crewmen, all that survived of some 240 who'd manned a bold, trade mission.

Chales I, the young Spanish king, was no longer willing to 1 overland trade routes for the spice that was so 2 in Europe. He appointed an expedition(探险队) to find a new 3 to Pacific islands rich with spices, and as captain he hired Ferdinand Magellan, a skilled Portuguese sailor who 4 believed the Earth was round, a theory not yet 5 .

The fleet was to find a westward route to the Spice Islands, and 6 the same way. They also were to focus on trade routes and 7 conquest (征服) and religion. Magellan wouldn't obey the 8 , with disastrous and historic results. In September1519, five ships set sail, 9 to collect nearly 550 tons of spices in two years.

The voyage stretched to three years. They survived with the 10 of Indigenous people they met, treating some 11 but others cruelly or violently. Quitting trade for conquest, Magellan 12 an island in the Philippines and was 13 in the surf. A new captain, Juan Sebasetin Elcano, guided the Victoria home with an unplanned 14 :proof that the Earth was round.

The first voyage of the globe - a 15 feat(丰功伟绩) of exploration and science— changed the world forever, sparking globalization and abuse of colonization for centuries to come.

 Pre-made gift baskets sit on the shelf already wrapped and ready for purchase. This is gift-giving at its easiest. Besides, some stores also offer gift baskets created right before your eyes. They allow you to select the items you would like in your basket, and then they'll arrange and wrap the items for you. What's more, you can also bring the contents home and make baskets only by yourself. Homemade ones allow you to have total control over the design.

Whether you create the gift baskets by your-self or not, they are excellent presents for any occasion.  They can be a unique way to express your appreciation and thoughtfulness and are sure to make the recipients feel special and appreciated.

Insecticides ( 杀 虫 剂) containing flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor, chemicals considered harmless to bees and bumblebees when approved, can have damaging effects on the health of honeybees. The chemicals are more likely to make bees suffer from diseases and shorten their lifespan. This was proven in a scientific study that was published in Science of the Total Environment. It was conducted at Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg(MLU) and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ).

For the study, honey bees that were free from environmental influences were first bred(培育) in the lab. "We wanted to control every respect of the bees' lives," says Dr. Yahya Al Naggar, the biologist who led the project at MLU and who now works at Tanta University in Egypt. All bees were given the same food at first. They were then divided into several groups and different insecticides were added to their food. One group was given flupyradifurone, while another was given sulfoxaflor. Both chemicals are approved insecticides in Germany, although their use is now limited to greenhouses.

Over a period of ten days, the team observed whether the insecticide s had any effect on the bees and, if so, what. They found that the insecticides were anything but harmless: Around half of all the bees whose diet included flupyradifurone died during the study. While sulfoxaflor produced similar effects, more bees survived the diet.

As the study was conducted in a lab to avoid external influences, it is unclear whether the same results can be found in nature. "The bees might be able to fully or at least partly make up for the negative effects ——or the effects of the insecticides could well be even greater," concludes Dr Tesfaye Wubet from UFZ. With this in mind, the team calls for the potential effects of new insecticide son  beneficial insects to be researched better before the insecticides are approved.

I hate losses. Two months ago, I went crazy when I looked for the wallet I'd lost. Checking every pocket, I got increasingly anxious. The money, the credit cards, the driver's license, and the social security card in my wallet kept flashing through my mind. Whoever found the wallet could steal my identity, run up huge expenses, and put me in financial danger!

My heart was pounding. I felt so flustered that I didn't go to work, not knowing what to do. Subsequently, I called the credit card companies and canceled my cards. Then I realized that I drove without a license, so I took time off to go to the registry to get a new one.

That night, I couldn't sleep. I had a pain in my chest. I thought I was having a heart attack. After a couple of hours of tests at the hospital, I was told that it was just an anxiety attack. Losing my wallet was no big deal; I just had to cancel the cards, get a new license, and buy a new wallet. I lost a few bills, but so what? However, I was deeply troubled by it.

Frankly, we all hate losses. Daniel Kahneman, an Israeli psychologist, found that people are generally more afraid of losing things than they're eager to gain. This phenomenon is called loss aversion(厌恶). In a typical study, when people were asked if they would rather get $500 for sure or a lottery ticket(彩票) with a 50-50 chance of winning $1000, they generally chose the former. But when they were asked if they would rather lose $500 for sure or get a lottery ticket that offers 50 percent chance of losing$1000, most people chose to take the risk. In both cases, the chances are the same but people's choices are different.

In fact, the emotions associated with loss formed a long time ago. Loss was always frightening and damaging for people then, and it's still with us. Indeed, that's why I blew the simple loss of a wallet out of proportion.
