2、One hot Tuesday afternoon, I was halfway through a marathon training run in Sintra's thick forest. I'd been1 myself hard — my legs ached, nearly out of breath. Yet, I thought of my 11-year-old sister Chloe, who always cheered me on, so I2 myself to keep going.

3、Anxiety isn't funny. When we feel worried or afraid, the last thing we feel like doing is laughing. Finding humor can be difficult when we live with anxiety. However, if we begin to look for humor, we can find that laughter can be a great coping skill.
Researchers have discovered that laughter has many benefits. Among the ways laughter lifts us by increasing our overall well-being and boosting our mental health. When we live with anxiety, our stress hormones pulse through us. This makes us feel tense and anxious. Although there are no quick solutions for anything in our life, a good laugh can instantly begin to reduce these harmful stress hormones that are mixed with anxiety. Laughter gets to work immediately, and a regular "diet" of laughter continues to decrease anxiety over time.
The act of laughing is similar to deep breathing in its ability to increase the oxygen in our bodies. Combined with reducing stress hormones, the increased oxygen in our bodies helps lead to muscle relaxation. All of this helps reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety.
Laughing feels good. It's addictive and we can keep wanting more. When we laugh regularly, our anxiety begins to decrease. When we have humor and give ourselves a chance to laugh a little bit for even a short while each day, we distract our focus. Rather than seeing the world within or without as a worrying place, we start to see it as a good, safe, and perhaps even fun place. We start to see beyond the anxiety. Sure, the anxiety lingers (徘徊) for a while, but every time we laugh, we can reduce it.
Introducing intentional laughter into our life decreases our stress hormones. Breathing deeply during the act of laughing relaxes muscles. Thinking about something funny shifts our focus to new things. Having humor regularly helps our outlook become more positive.

4、Scott Behringer, George Gilbert and Tim Korber first met on vacation many years ago. In 1994, they took a beach photo in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. In the picture, the three men stood side by side with their arms crossed and their baseball caps turned backward. They wore bright swim shorts and looked relaxed and happy. They later called it their "iconic photo".
Their friendship began in 1986. Tim and his wife Patty met Scott and his wife Cheree in Cancun, Mexico. They quickly became close friends and kept traveling together. Later, on a flight, they met another couple, George and Debbie. By chance, all three couples were from California. Soon, the six of them became close friends. They supported each other in daily life and shared many trips around the world.
Over the years, they traveled to many places, including the Sierra Nevada mountains, Hawaii and even South Africa. They celebrated weddings, birthdays and other important moments together. Their children grew up together, and now they are proud grandparents. They often say they are more than friends — they are like family.
The 1994 beach photo became a symbol of their strong friendship. During later trips, the three men often copied the same pose for fun.
In 2024, they had a special chance to recreate the photo. George and Debbie's son was getting married in Cabo, the same place where the original picture was taken. The three men brought clothes like those they wore in the 1990s and returned to the same beach. Although the background had changed because of a hurricane, they stood in the same spot and struck the same pose.

"Can't you ever be on time? We're going to miss the movie!" Sarah shouted at her best friend, Emily, who was still looking for her wallet. The two had planned to see a movie together, but Emily's frequent lateness was driving Sarah crazy. "I'm sorry, I just can't find it," Emily replied, her voice shaking.
As they finally rushed out of the house, Sarah continued to complain. "This always happens. I'm tired of waiting for you. I plan everything, and you ruin it!" Emily remained silent, her eyes fixed on the ground.
When they arrived at the cinema, it was already ten minutes after the movie had started. "See? We missed the beginning because of you," Sarah said angrily. Emily bought the tickets without a word.
During the movie, Sarah couldn't focus. She noticed Emily was sitting quietly, looking down. Sarah's anger began to fade, and she started to feel a bit guilty. After the movie ended, they walked out of the cinema. Sarah realized Emily was acting strange. Usually, she would be chatting non-stop, but now she seemed lost in thought.
"Hey, are you okay?" Sarah asked, a little worried. Emily looked up, her eyes red. "I'm really sorry about today. It's just that…my mom's been sick, and I've been under so much stress. I was looking for the money she gave me to buy some medicine."
Sarah was shocked. She had been so busy being angry about being late that she hadn't even noticed something was wrong with Emily.

11、Some studies estimate that by 2025, about 35.7 million Americans or 22% of the workforce will be remote workers. Now more people are choosing to welcome a location-independent, technology-enabled lifestyle that allows them to travel and work remotely. They are called digital nomads (数字游民), and the trend is becoming more and more widespread.
The growing popularity of this location-independent lifestyle has stimulated an interest in digital nomad visas. As a result, countries are introducing visa options to lure foreigners for extended stays. For example, Indonesia announced that the country is developing a new visa that would be valid for five years — longer than any other digital nomad visa currently available. The emergence of digital nomad visas signifies a progressive response to the rising demand for this new lifestyle.
Meanwhile, the conventional image of digital nomads is undergoing a transformation. Digital nomads used to be thought of as twenty-somethings backpacking from hostel (旅舍) to hostel, looking for anywhere they could plug in their laptop. But flexible work and homeschooling have helped introduce a new type of digital nomad that wants to see the world and create lasting memories with their families. It's called the "anywhere worker". Most anywhere workers can be found in high-tech jobs, with 61% working full-time. Almost half of people in this category are married, and, unlike the typical digital nomad, 70% are parents who take their families with them.
Consistent with the changing image of digital nomads, there is also a shift from valuing possessions to focusing on experiences. Millennials (千禧一代), in particular, are fueling this trend. Rather than spend money on expensive watches or luxury cars, younger generations prefer to invest in experiences like concerts, rock climbing and traveling. According to one study, more than three in four Millennials would rather spend their hard-earned money on a thrilling experience or event over buying a product.
As remote work opportunities increase, the trend of living a digital nomadic lifestyle is expected to continue growing, allowing more individuals to pursue their dream lifestyles.
(1)、What makes remote work possible?A、The rise of digital nomads. B、The availability of digital nomad visas. C、The rapid development of advanced technology. D、The increased requirement for work-life balance.(2)、What does the underlined word "lure" mean in Paragraph 2?A、Guide. B、Attract. C、Request. D、Entertain.(3)、What do most "anywhere workers" value nowadays?A、Time spent with families. B、Regular working hours. C、Quality homeschooling. D、Jobs in high-tech companies.(4)、What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A、The shopping habits of Millennials. B、The analysis of Millennials' image. C、The changing values of digital nomads. D、The benefits of a digital nomadic lifestyle. -
12、We know sleep quality is important for good health, that adolescence (青少年时期) is an important time for brain development, and that teens don't always get a huge amount of sleep — and new research gives us some fresh understanding of how that all fits together.
Researchers used data from 3,222 adolescents aged 9 to 14. They divided them into three groups based on sleep habits: the worst (averaging 7 hours and 10 minutes per night), the best (7 hours and 25 minutes), and those in between (7 hours and 21 minutes). While there wasn't much difference between these groups in terms of academic achievement, the best sleepers showed noticeable improvements in cognitive (认知的) tests for reading, problem solving, and focus, compared to the worst sleepers. "Even though the differences in the amount of sleep that each group got were relatively small, at just over a quarter-of-an-hour between the best and worst sleepers, we could still see differences in brain structure and activity and in how well they did at tasks," says clinical neuropsychologist Barbara Sahakian from the University of Cambridge. "This shows us just how important it is to have a good night's sleep at this important stage in life."
The group of young people who slept the longest per night was also observed to have the largest brain volumes, the lowest heart rates, and the highest levels of brain connectivity, compared to the other groups. Worryingly, 39% of the young people had the poorest sleep data, 24% were in the middle group, and 37% had the best sleep scores.
The research can't prove cause and effect between sleep and brain function, but together with other studies, it shows that young brains need sleep protection. Psychologist Qing Ma said there are studies supporting the idea that better sleep may lead to better brain function and test performance. This study reminds teens and parents to reduce time on mobile devices. Regular good sleep helps us function properly, yet we know little about adolescent sleep despite its importance.
(1)、What does the research aim to do?A、Measure heart rate differences in teenagers. B、Analyze the effects of sleep habits on good health. C、Investigate sleep-brain relationships in adolescents. D、Compare academic achievements among adolescents.(2)、What can be inferred about the "best sleepers" from Paragraph 2?A、They had the lowest heart rates. B、They performed better in cognition. C、They had better academic performance. D、They spent significantly more time sleeping.(3)、Why are the percentages listed in Paragraph 3?A、To compare sleep habits. B、To draw attention to the sleep problem. C、To explain the study's sample size. D、To challenge previous research findings.(4)、What does the author imply in the last paragraph?A、Longer sleep betters academic achievement. B、Sleep habits are well-understood in current research. C、Protecting sleep during adolescence may require practical changes. D、Reducing screen time is likely unnecessary to improve sleep quality. -
13、For many, finding an unattended wallet filled with 400 in cash would be a source of temptation (诱惑). But the urge would no doubt be greater if you were living on the streets with little food and money. All of this makes the actions of the homeless Tom Smith even more remarkable.
After spotting a wallet on the front seat inside a parked car with its window down, he stood guard in the rain for about two hours waiting for the owner to return.
After hours in the cold and wet, he reached inside and pulled the wallet out hoping to find some ID so he could contact the driver, only to discover it contained 400 in notes, with another 50 in spare change beside it.
He then took the wallet to a nearby police station. When the car's owner John Anderson and his colleague Carol Lawrence returned back, they were shocked to find two policemen standing next to it. The policemen told them what Mr. Smith did and that the wallet was safe.
The pair were later able to thank Mr. Smith for his kindness.
Mr. Anderson said: "I couldn't believe that the guy never took a penny. To think he is sleeping on the streets tonight when he could have stolen the money and paid for a place to stay in. This guy has nothing and yet he didn't take the wallet for himself; he thought about others instead. It's unbelievable. It just proves there are honest guys out there."
Mr. Smith's act drew much of the public's attention and won praise from social media users after Mr. Anderson posted the story on Facebook.
Now Mr. Anderson has set up an online campaign to raise money for Mr. Smith and other homeless people in the area, which by yesterday had received 8,000. "People have been approaching him in the street; he's had job offers and all sorts," Mr. Anderson commented.
(1)、What can we learn from the passage?A、Tom Smith might later get a job offered by kind people. B、Tom Smith received 8,000 from the owner of the wallet. C、The police found the owner of the wallet through an ID card. D、John and his colleague thanked Tom Smith later face to face.(2)、Mr. Anderson's words tell us that ________.A、Tom Smith was always thinking of others B、Tom Smith took some pennies from the wallet C、usually the homeless are greedy for money D、sometimes he didn't have faith in others(3)、Which words can best describe Tom Smith?A、Generous and considerate. As far as I can remember,I've always been a night owl.Even in middle school I would stay up very late.I would feel completely at ease doing my homework in bed, with light music on.I found comfort in keeping myself awake when everyone else had gone to bed,and I loved the silence of the night. My parents urged me to get out of this so-called unhealthy habit, but their repeated requests fell on deaf ears.
Fast forward to my first year of college.I still loved the night and would stay up until unruly hours for no apparent reason, chatting online and watching videos. When I finally started to study,I would race through the assigned work, often well past midnight. My roommates would tell me to go to bed and get up early the following morning to do it instead. Get up early to do my homework? No way!I would never do that.
Then, one day last term,I did exactly that.Bent over my laptop while sitting on the bed in the corner of my room,I suddenly felt a pounding headache, and had to lie down.Unable to keep my eyes open,I decided I had no choice but to finish my homework the next morning.
I woke up at 6am.Hardly had I written half a page when I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
At the school clinic,a doctor, with a serious expression on his face, handed me a medical report."You're 20,but your heart is 40!"he said.A cold wave went through me.I realized that years of living as a late-night person had turned my heart into an overworked engine.

Ways to Teach Kids Work Ethic Early
Ever watched your child try to get out of doing housework by making excuses? If only the effort they put into avoiding responsibility could be redirected into, well, actual responsibility. In fact, building work ethic(道德)in kids doesn't require military-style drills. Here are four simple and practical ways.
● Make housework part of the family routine.
Involve your child in the daily running of the house:tidying toys, feeding the dog, watering the plants. When the tasks become as routine as brushing teeth, kids internalise that helping with housework is simply part of life.
●
You can't expect your child to tackle their tasks with enthusiasm while you're complaining about loading the dishwasher. If your child sees you enjoying your work and taking pride in a job well done, they're far more likely to do the same.
● Build determination through goals.
Sometimes you have to help them find their "thing."Set small, achievable goals together with them and celebrate progress, not perfection. The trick is to let them struggle a bit-resist the urge to help fix things the moment they experience a setback.
● Treat mistakes as opportunities.
Few things strike fear into a child's heart like the prospect of failing. The best way is to normalise mistakes as a natural part of learning. When kids mess up,don't jump in with a rescue mission.
Teaching kids work ethic is to gently and consistently push them toward responsibility, determination, and pride in their efforts. No worry. Those habits you're building now are setting your child up for a lifetime of resilience(韧性)and satisfaction.
A.The key is consistency.
B.Help kids develop analytical skills.
C.Model the work ethic you want to see.
D.Instead, encourage them to do differently next time.
E.Sometimes,a cleaner living room is the best reward.
F.Progress can be slow, and you'llwonder if it's all sinking in.
G.Not every child is born with the willpower of a marathon runner.

20、 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
The Barcelona subway pulls into the station, the doors slide open and passengers pour out to go about their daily business.Little do they know that as they do so,a burst of energy is sent up to street level to help charge an electric car.
Barcelona has put together a package of clean energy technologies to help public transportation go greener, while also doing its part to tackle climate change and aid Europe's difficult shift to the privately owned electric vehicle market.
Sixteen stations of Barcelona's subway system are part ofits new MetroCharge project, whereby the energy from the underground trains'brakes (刹车)is used to power the trains and the stations themselves, while the remainder is sent snaking through cables(电缆)to the surface to power plug-in stations for privately owned vehicles.
Bernardo Espinoza,an engineer who takes the subway every day, owns an electric car."I am pleasantly surprised, because I am always looking for where to plug it in,"Espinoza said before catching the subway in a working-class area of southern Barcelona."And if it is from energy from the trains'brakes, then even better."
Regenerative brakes have been in trains for decades and are also used in some cars. They consist of an electric motor which collects energy used in the braking action that would be lost as heat by conventional brakes. That energy can be immediately used to accelerate( 加速) the vehicle or,in the case of the Barcelona subway system, sent along cables to supply electricity for the station or for electric car chargers.
Alvaro Luna,a professor of electrical engineering, said that the system is innovative in so far as it allows for recycled energy to be redirected to specific local uses-in this case powering electric cars parked nearby. That,he said, boosts efficiency.
(1)、Why does Barcelona launch the MetroCharge project?A、To fuel the city's economy. B、To enhance passengers'experience. C、To promote green transportation. D、To raise the quality of electric cars.(2)、What is Espinoza's concern?A、How to cut his travel expenses. B、Where to get a parking space. C、How to avoid rush-hour traffic. D、Where to find a charging point.(3)、What aspect of regenerative brakes is discussed in paragraph 5?A、Their operating conditions. B、Their conventional standard. C、Their potential risks. D、Their working mechanism.(4)、What did Luna say about the system?A、It uses reclaimed energy creatively. B、It improves workers'efficiency. C、It prioritizes the safety of trains. D、It generates jobs for the locals.
