More often than not, what we mean when we say someone "has an accent" is that their accent is different from the local one, or that pronunciations are different from our own. But this definition (定义) of accents is limiting and could cause prejudice (偏见). Funnily enough, in terms of the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that define our accents. Even if you don't hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it's pointless to point out that someone "has an accent". We all do!

Every person speaks a dialect (方言), too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For example, "You got eat or not?" (meaning "Have you eaten?") is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to take pause doesn't mean that Singapore Oral English is "wrong" or "ungrammatical". The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers' solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it's different?

We need to move beyond a narrow conception (概念) of accents and dialects — for the benefit of everyone.

Language differences like these provide insights into people's cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of one's identity (身份). Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We'd learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.

Hopie was a beautiful black and white dog. She was such a gentle soul. She was let out of the house in extreme heat and attacked by another dog. I tried to save her but it was too late. My heart breaks every day missing her.

Hopie used to follow me around the yard when I was mowing (割) the grass; even if it was hot. She'd take a break and go back in the shade for a while, but always felt like she had to stay near me and she'd come back and walk along behind me.

After I lost her I couldn't even bear to go out and mow the grass. One day I finally realized I had better get out there and do it because it was looking like a field. As l walked along slowly thinking of her and missing her, a black and white dragonfly (蜻蜓) started following me and then flying in front of me. It finally landed on the handle of the mower right near my hands and just sat there looking at me. I said out loud, "Hopie, is that you?" and the dragonfly just sat there and continued to look straight at me.

I have not ever seen a dragonfly with those colors: black body, white eyes and black and white wings. I knew in my heart that it was my Hopie coming to tell me. She was still there watching over me and tears came to my eyes. 1 told her I loved her and she flew away up into the sky as free as she could be. I still miss her every day and every time I see a dragonfly, I think of her.

But many artifacts (手工艺品) are still unluckily missing and some are on their way back. One such object is an eight-legged seat from the old kingdom in Uganda. The important arti- fact now sits at a museum thousands of kilometers away in Britain. The wooden seat is housed at the University of Oxford. It is one of at least 279 objects there taken from the Bunyoro- Kitara Kingdom.

Apollo John Rwamparo is a deputy prime minister of Uganda. He really values the country's cultural heritage. He requested the British to return the artifacts. Uganda officials are preparing to meet with the University of Cambridge in Britain about the return of such historical artifacts. The school has an unknown number of artifacts from Africa. Through many efforts, an artifact was recently to its home.

The British Museum holds a large collection of artifacts from Africa. Rose Mwanja said Uganda's commission had been trying hard on it and believed it could have some good effects. She is Uganda's commissioner for museums. She added she could start with those that are more willing to cooperate.

Many of the artifacts from Africa cannot even be found. That led to an organization star- ted by late Congolese art collector Sindika Dokolo. The organization offers to buy African art from collections in foreign countries. By 2020, when Dokolo died, his group had successfully recovered 15 items. However, for African governments, the recovery of artifacts remains a struggle and will take much time.

The Forbidden City, also known as the Palace Museum, is a hot tourist attraction. Built in 1420, the palace recorded lives of important people through various relics and documents. The Forbidden City made a two-day broadcast (celebrate) its 600th birthday in April, 2020. The museum can provide a large amount of (value) material for today's historical research, as well as inspiration for literature and entertainment.

These knots were used to record events and information in ancient times. As time went by, Chinese knotting developed into a decorative art.

His biggest challenge came when he planned to make a film about a tennis player. Since no one would offer him money for a 2-hour film, Meng and his college friends tried to make a shorter one. They bought a second-hand camera and used old things instead of expensive equipment. They even made a shelf on their own to support the camera.

Meng and his friends worked hard, rain or shine. When filming the tennis player, they ran after him in the summer sun. Since its creation in the 12th century, A Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains(recognize) as a masterpiece of traditional Chinese painting. But perhaps just as stunning as the work itself is the factit was created by Wang Ximeng (1096-1119) from the Northern Song Dynasty.

This success comes at a cost. As things stand, most satellites are single-use products with lifetime of 15 years or less. Moreover, space debris (垃圾), which may cause damage to spacecraft, is a growing problem. The rapid increase in satellites raises key questions about whether humanity could or should litter the environment around Earth.

Astronomers are raising their voice in this debate. Researchers pointing their telescopes at stars are increasingly finding their observations ruined by light streaks (光条纹) from satellites flying overhead. In the past five years, some astronomers and satellite operators have cooperated to preserve "dark and quiet skies". This could involve changing a satellite's design to make it less bright or organizing activities so that astronomers can point their telescopes to regions where satellites aren't flying at any given moment.

Satellite connectivity remains essential for many people, including Indigenous communities in remote and under-served areas. Virginia wants to change that. Crews have fixed special viewfinders at all 43 Virginia state parks so that more visitors can experience a world of vibrant colors. The viewfinders are designed for people with red-green colorblindness, which is the most common form of the condition. Subtypes of red-green colorblindness exist, but they all affect how people notice shades with reds and greens in them.

Created by SeeCoast Manufacturing, the viewfinders are equipped with special lenses (镜头) made by EnChroma that help people with red-green colorblindness distinguish between color degrees. Similar to binoculars (双筒望远镜), the viewfinders also enlarged whatever's in view.

In Virginia, the project started last summer at Natural Tunnel State Park, located near the far western tip of the state. Natural Tunnel State Park fixed a viewfinder at an overlook that offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding scenery. That first viewfinder was such a big hit that the state decided to bring them to the rest of Virginia's state parks. Funding for the project came from donations made by visitors through the "Round-up for Parks" program.

"The colorblind-friendly viewfinders aren't the only way Virginia is making its parks more accessible. This summer, Natural Bridge State Park also began offering a free mobile app designed for people who are blind or visually damaged," reports WFXR's Thad Randasso. The app provides audio instructions in 26 languages to help users find direction in the park, and also provides real-time audio descriptions of the user's surroundings.

Recently, I had to change my thinking, when I came face to face with just such a human being. I had gone to a fashionable coffee place, with two of my grown-up daughters. The place was crowded with the usual loud crowd and we had to climb a steep flight of stairs in order to find an empty table. After enjoying coffee and snacks, we were walking down the steep stairs, where the narrow space made climbing down only possible in a single file, with hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down.

Just as I was in the middle of the staircase, a gentleman entered the main entrance of the restaurant which was right in front of the staircase. I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man who would want to go up in a hurry. I kept coming down as fast as I could, holding on to the banister (扶手), in spite of my advanced years. My daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger started up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort.

Nearly reaching them, I noticed the man still standing near the door. I reached my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door which he kept holding open. I looked back thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place. I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through.

We admired his kindness for both, waiting for us to come down before going up himself and also holding the main entrance door open for us to go out. To date, I still remember this gentleman and pray to God to make more human beings like him.
