  • 2、"Hobbies" is a term that refers to the activities done for relaxation and enjoyment in your spare time. Hobbies are valuable as some of them make you skilled and knowledgeable. I will list some of the hobbies that are productive and worth developing.

Reading makes a full man. Children must develop the hobby of reading at an early age by reading storybooks, poems and so on. However, if you didn't do that in your childhood, don't worry. The more a person reads, the broader his vision becomes.

Cooking is another good hobby. Many of those who enjoy the art of cooking take a training course in hotel management. After completion of the course, some of them can get placed in famous hotels and restaurants, and many will start their own business.

Most of the people take up the hobby just for pleasure and peace. They enjoy doing it and build up a great collection over time. Those who paint really well can exhibit their talent and gain some appreciation. They may also use the hobby to earn some money, if they wish to.

Facebooking was not considered as a constructive hobby, but Facebooking can turn out to be highly useful nowadays. Many people who know how to attract people with awesome contents build huge fans online and they do well on facebooking.

    A. There are no age limits to the hobby.

    B. Painting is an art of expressing views and on paper.

    C. The sooner a hobby is developed, the better you perform.

    D. Some people take up this as a hobby and later as a career.

    E. With time going by, we will miss out on some good hobbies.

    F. It has turned out to be a powerful medium of communication.

    G. If you love doing it, you will surely succeed in your future career.

  • 3、"What do you mean by this phrase? It's incorrect and adds nothing to the sentence. Omit (省略)." Professor Jones's critical feedback on my paper hurt me when I first read it. I scanned his comments for a "Good job!" or "I love this idea," but they were nowhere to be found.

Everyone likes warmth and encouragement, but purely positive affirmations (肯定) don't communicate what can be improved. Research conducted on Character Lab Research Network finds that direct, useful feedback requiring students to revise their own work is more effective. For Professor Jones, this looked like a note at the end of another paper: "I'm sure things will improve as the term and year wear on." However, feedback that does the work for a student—correcting a misspelled word, rewriting a sentence—can signal a teacher's low expectations.

When kids see comments that suggest what needs to be changed, they come to realize they can do things on their own and become more independent learners. As a bonus, this kind of feedback lets students know that their teacher believes in them.

As for me, I was benedictory for Professor Jones's pointed criticism which let me know that he took me seriously. He was expecting me to do better, and the detailed comments scrawled (潦草地写) on every page gave me the tools to improve. Teachers can add affirmations to their feedback as long as it's not the only thing they're doing.

Don't confuse warmth with promoting a growth mindset. Being nice isn't the same as showing someone you believe they can improve. So give detailed feedback that sets young people up to take charge of their own learning. For example, instead of rewriting a sentence, say: "This is a run-on sentence. Try reading it out loud and add punctuation in places where you naturally take a breath." Ask worth-exploring questions that inspire students to think about their approach, then let them revise on their own. When it comes to writing, the easiest path isn't always the best one.

(1)、How did the author initially feel about Professor Jones's feedback?
A、Happy and motivated. B、Upset and disappointed. C、Indifferent and unconcerned. D、Confident and encouraged.
(2)、What is the key aspect of effective feedback mentioned in the article?
A、It should be brief and to the point. B、It should be warm and encouraging. C、It should be written at the end of the paper. D、It should be up to students to fix their own work.
(3)、What does the underlined word "benedictory" mean in paragraph 4?
    A、Responsible. B、Generous. C、Regretful. D、Grateful.
(4)、What should teachers do when checking student's paper according to the text?
A、Give students general praise. B、Rewrite sentences for students. C、Provide students critical support. D、Show students corrected assignments.
  • 4、The Mona Lisa is the famous Leonardo da Vinci painting of a woman with a mysterious smile. This week, the woman parted her lips to whisper an ancient secret.

Scientists using X-rays to examine the chemical structure of a small part of the painting discovered a technique Leonardo used in the work. An oil paint used for it was a special, new chemical mixture, which suggests that the Italian artist was in an experimental mood when he worked on the painting in the 16th century.

"He loved to experiment, and each of his paintings is completely different technically," said Victor Gonzalez, a chemist who has studied the chemical element of several works by Leonardo and other artists. The researchers found a rare lead compound (铅化合物) — plumbonacrite, in Leonardo's first layer of paint. The discovery proved that da Vinci most likely used lead oxide to thicken and help dry his paint. The paint in the study is about the thickness of a human hair, lying in the top right area of the painting.

The scientists looked into its atomic (原子的) structure using X-rays, moving particles at the speed of light, permitting researchers to look deeper into the paint structure. "Plumbonacrite is really a fingerprint of his recipe, as it's the first time we can chemically confirm it," Gonzalez said.

Rembrandt, the Dutch master, may have employed a similar blend in his 17th-century paintings. Gonzalez and fellow researchers have also detected plumbonacrite in his art. It's believed that Leonardo used lead oxide powder, which has an orange color, to thicken his oil paint and speed up drying. "What you will get is an oil that has a very nice golden color," Gonzalez said. "It flows more like honey."

But the Mona Lisa — said by the Louvre to be a portrait (肖像) of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a Florentine silk businessman — There's more to her gaze than meets the eye. "What we are saying is just a little brick in the knowledge," Gonzalez said.

(1)、What technique did da Vinci potentially use in the Mona Lisa?
A、The employment of tailored X-rays. B、The application of a rare lead compound. C、A special mixture of oil paints. D、The universal use of atomic structures.
(2)、What does the use of plumbonacrite suggest about Leonardo's painting approach?
A、Willingness to experiment. B、Giving priority to conventions. C、Technically identical output. D、Concentration on paint drying.
(3)、What is Gonzalez's attitude towards the use of lead oxide powder?
    A、Dismissive. B、Objective. C、Doubtful. D、Favorable.
(4)、What can we infer about the Mona Lisa from the last paragraph?
A、It still holds secrets yet to be uncovered. B、It echoes the realities of the worldly life. C、It's a perfect combination of old and new. D、It serves as the key to understanding Leonardo.
  • 5、Located in the Oaxaca, Mexico, the fishing village Huatulco is home to thousands of baby turtles. I had three open days on my calendar, and a desire to save some turtles. And so, away I went to Huatulco with a powerhouse of willing protectors calling themselves Wildcoast.

To carry out my mission, I was taken to La Escobilla to experience Wildcoast in action. Just one hour north of Huatulco, this protected beach is where mass turtle nesting happens. The natural phenomenon occurs at 12 beaches around the world, three of which are in Mexico. Having just four days during rainy season, thousands of female sea turtles go ashore to lay their eggs.

Between threats like illegal hunters, natural enemies and oil spills, the hatchlings (幼龟) have the whole world against them. As recently as 2012, turtle hunting was not only common practice, but an important part of the culture and diet in the Oaxacan communities.

Wildcoast rescues turtle eggs and recreates habitats. Thanks to their efforts, various sea turtles have made a major comeback, with now over 72 million turtles being born.

I got to hold 50 of the hatchlings in a bowl. Statistically speaking, just one in 1,000 baby turtles will make it to adulthood. Staring at the bowl, I so badly wanted them to find shelter somewhere in the ocean.

Finally, it was time to set free those little ones. Having made sure no suspicious (可疑的) people were nearby, I let out the hatchlings. With each set of waves, we witnessed the survival of the fittest, some crawling (爬行) past the whitewash while others crashed back to shore. A bunch of birds was ready to div e into the sea for their targets.

    "One in 1,000."

Nature was both cruel and sympathetic. After 30 long minutes, the last hatchling made its way to the sea.

    (1)、What is Wildcoast?
A、A lively beach housing various wild animals. B、An official organization tackling ocean oil leaks. C、An experienced team exploring the coastal areas. D、A voluntary group assisting the survival of turtles.
(2)、Why was the author taken to La Escobilla?
A、To liberate collected hatchlings. B、To protect dedicate turtle eggs. C、To witness mass turtle nesting. D、To record Oaxacan cultures.
(3)、Which threat does the author want to protect the turtles from?
    A、Water pollution. B、Human hunting. C、Natural enemies. D、Ocean waves.
(4)、How might the author feel when seeing the hatchlings crawling?
    A、Relieved. B、Attached. C、Concerned. D、Annoyed.
  • 6、It's no wonder that the train from London to Edinburgh is one of Trainline's top three bestselling routes for American travelers. Here are the most popular routes to explore the Scottish Highlands by train, all starting in Edinburgh.

For those seeking out the fabled Loch Ness monster, Inverness is the closest train station to the famous lake. From the station, travelers can take a bus or taxi to Fort Augustus and board a boat tour or fishing charter to try to spot the creature. Even if she isn't found, Loch Ness is still a sight for the eyes, with a historic port and trails through the forests and past waterfalls. Being Scotland's second-largest lake and holding more water than any other lake in the U. K., Loch Ness is a great place to fish or boat.

Although a long train ride, the trip from Edinburgh to Mallaig, a charming fishing village, is worth it. This route offers some of the best scenery in the world — in fact, riders might recognize the train, which goes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, as Harry Potter's Hogwarts Express. Travelers can board the 19th-century-inspired Jacobite Steam Train and wind past attractive villages, the Morar River and beaches.

At an altitude of over 4,412 feet, Ben Nevis is an ancient volcano that exploded and collapsed on itself to become the tallest mountain in the British Isles. Travelers can take the train to Fort William, a town offering castles, distilleries, and rocky coastlines. The town is also titled as the "Outdoor Capital" of Scotland, so thrill seekers can go skiing and hiking to their hearts' desire. If hiking Ben Nevis doesn't sound appealing, there's also a boat tour that provides impressive views.

(1)、What can be learned about the train to Mallaig?
A、It has the longest train route in Scotland. B、It goes past a famous lake in Scotland. C、It once appeared in the movie Harry Potter. D、It was invented in the 19th century.

I faced a tight budget when I was nine. On November Ist, I used up most of the money I saved. With a small amount of pocket money left before Christmas I didn't have enough to buy presents for the family.

I was seriously considering going to my dad and asking for an advance on the next year's pocket money, so I could at least buy gifts for my family members. But then, one evening, I was sitting in my room reading advertisements in the back of a magazine. Several greeting-card companies were telling us how people could make money by selling their cards and stationery (文具). Normally, I would have passed right over the ads, but this time my situation was so difficult that I felt I had nothing to lose.

The ad that attracted me most was one by a well-known greeting-card company in my nation, whose products were of high quality. With my parents' help, I contacted the company, although they preferred adults or older kids to advertise their products. After my sincere request, they agreed to give me, a nine-year-old boy, a chance.

My sales materials arrived within the week. I had expected something small and neat, but the package looked like a dinosaur's shoebox it was close to three feet long and nearly a foot wide, full of stuff. There was a thick binder (活页夹) containing a complete selection of the cards and some writing paper, which I would be selling for around $3 per box.

Although my parents supported my try to make money by myself, they had little confidence in my success; after all, instead of an outgoing kid, I was somewhat shy. However, I was determined to have a try to challenge myself.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
