On a mid-autumn night, Australian scholar Jordan Martin, (know) in China as Ma Zhaoren, strolled through the moonlit courtyards of Yuelu Academy in Hunan province. In the ancient halls, he felt a quiet bond with scholars of centuries past. That sense of continuity helps explain Martin came to China and has stayed for more than a decade.
After earning his master's and doctorate in philosophy at the academy, the 38-year-old joined its faculty and (gain) great popularity since then. Now he specializes in teaching and researching Chinese philosophy, centering his attention reinterpreting pre-Qin thought for the modern world.
At first, his motivation was practical. "I wanted to (true) master Chinese and realized I needed to immerse myself in the language," he said. That decision and a chance encounter brought him to Yuelu Academy, offered far more than academic resources. Through his studies, Martin discovered the enduring relevance of pre-Qin philosophy to modern life. (combine) pre-Qin thought with evolutionary theory, he interprets de (virtue) not just as moral qualities, but as social signals for maintaining trust in society.
Beyond the classroom, Martin considers (he) a cultural ambassador. At international conferences, he always introduces Yuelu Academy's thousand-year history, hoping to plant a seed of (curious) in his colleagues. The dedication symbolizes the academy's spirit — spirit that encourages people to preserve traditions while embracing new knowledge.

3、A few weeks ago, while accidentally listening to a radio programme, a piece about laughter caught my ear. I was1 the health benefits claimed by the presenters. I wondered if it was possible to add more2 into my days, or if this was just a deeply3 idea born from too many coffees? Curious and slightly excited, I decided to begin my journey4 laughter.
At first, the task felt strange. I asked friends and family to5 me with "funny memories". However, they either said they'd get back to me and didn't, or pointed me to online videos.
Next, I6 "laughter yoga" recommended online. Laughter yoga, I discovered, was a combination of facial expressions and fake chuckles (假笑) that, when7 together, result in a farewell ceremony to any pride you ever had. I kept8, until looked up at my two-year-old son who was9 by my expressions. His concern caught me off guard and ultimately I10 laughing, — although I refused to11 laughter yoga for this. Changing your diet can also raise your12, experts say, but I didn't try that. Perhaps I should have gone to the HahaHouse Museum of Laughter in Croatia, but the cost of getting there would have made my laughter13.
Ultimately, what I realised is that it's not particularly14 to try and create daily laughter. Those "funny memories" should be cared for and15 in moments of sadness or nostalgia. But do stay away from laughter yoga.

4、The importance of homework
Homework is an essential part of a student's education, even if many students dislike it. They often feel that homework takes away their free time, which they would prefer to spend on leisure activities.
It gives students practice in what they have learned in class. Without this additional practice, students will usually forget what they have learned. When the teacher marks the homework, the teacher will also be able to check if a student needs help with a certain topic or concept.
It keeps students occupied in productive activities. They would most likely spend their time on things which they enjoy but are not beneficial. Homework ensures that students do some studying, which will help them do better in examinations. Otherwise, their time would be wasted on unproductive and even unhealthy pastimes.
Homework is usually done at home where there is no supervision by teachers. Unless students have strict parents who monitor what they do, it is up to the students to decide when to do the work or even whether to complete the task or not. With this, students would slowly become more used to the idea of doing independent work without someone breathing down their necks.
To conclude, homework plays a very important role in education, even though students like to complain about it. Therefore, students should approach homework with a positive attitude and a sense of responsibility.
A. It promotes students' self-discipline effectively.
B. Many students believe homework limits their leisure time.
C. Homework can cause stress and anxiety for some students.
D. Actually, homework plays a crucial role in education for many benefits.
E. It strengthens learning, engages students, and develops essential life skills.
F. The extra work helps students check their understanding of lessons taught.
G. Without homework, students will have a lot of time on their hands after school.

5、On June 4, 2025, Wei Dongyi, a well-known mathematics professor at Peking University, launched his official social media account. Verified (证实) by the platform and supported by his family, the account shares mathematical knowledge, interacts with the public, and corrects false information.
Wei is renowned for his exceptional mathematical abilities. As a high school student, he won two gold medals with full marks at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 2008 and 2009, setting a Chinese record in the process. 6、In 1872, a 12-year-old Chinese boy boarded a ship heading for the USA. He would be away from his parents for the next nine years. This young boy was Zhan Tianyou, who was destined to play a major role in the development of China's railroads. Zhan was one of the first 30 boys chosen for the Chinese Educational Mission (CEM), founded by the Qing government to help China develop through education.
Recruiting these boys was not easy. The CEM's original plan required parents to part with their sons for 15 years — a huge risk when few Chinese had traveled abroad, and many feared foreigners. A friend persuaded Zhan's father to let him take the CEM test, and Zhan finally joined the group sailing to the USA.
After reaching the US west coast, Zhan and the others traveled by train to east coast schools. On the way, he was amazed by American industrial civilisation, especially the railroads and trains. In Connecticut, he studied at the Seaside Institute for Boys, where he became close to the headmaster's family. Mrs Northrop, the headmaster's wife, noticed his talent for maths and encouraged him to study science and engineering — a suggestion that shaped his future.
Zhan did not ignore his studies in the US. He expanded his knowledge of science, took part in research, and graduated top of his class. In high school, he was impressed by the new American railroad system and saddened by China's limited displays (mostly tea and silk) at a US exposition. Thus, he longed to rid China of the tough situation. These experiences led him to choose civil engineering (focused on railroads) at Yale University. He graduated first in 1881, but the Qing government recalled all CEM students that summer — only Zhan and one other finished college.
Zhan returned to China eager to build railroads. In 1888, he began his work, and later became famous for the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway (built across difficult and complex region). Known as "the Father of China's Railroad," he served his country for 31 years, improving millions of lives.
(1)、Why was it hard to recruit boys for the CEM?A、The trip to the US was too expensive. B、Parents were unwilling to separate from their sons for long. C、The Qing government did not support the mission. D、Boys were not interested in studying abroad.(2)、What influenced Zhan to choose civil engineering as his major?A、His interest in American railroads and desire to help China. B、Mrs Northrop's suggestion to study science. C、His excellent performance in maths at the Seaside Institute. D、The limited displays of Chinese products at the US exposition.(3)、What can we learn about Zhan from the text?A、He spent 15 years in the US as planned. B、He was the only CEM student to finish college. C、He built the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway in 1888. D、He made great contributions to China's railroad development.(4)、What is the main purpose of the text?A、To explain the role of the CEM in China's development. B、To describe Zhan Tianyou's experiences and achievements. C、To compare American and Chinese railroads in the 1800s. D、To introduce the history of China's first railroad. -

19、The scary flood came on July 15, 2021. Yet I can never go back to live in my home because I just keep thinking: what if it does happen again?
Earlier in the day I had1 for the unlikely event of a flood. It had been raining that week, and authorities had issued a flood2, though not for where I was. Still, I'd placed3 on the floor outside my garden door in case of the flooding water. Before my friends left, they laughed at me for doing that, but I thought, why take a4?
It was after midnight when I was awakened by the5 sound of rushing water as if I were lying beside a waterfall instead of in my bedroom. I thought it could be a burst pipe. Trembling and in darkness, I grabbed my cell phone and turned on the flashlight. It wasn't a burst pipe at all! Instead, water was6 up through the gaps of the garden door. The water must have breached the sandbags. All around me, my things — chairs and lamps — began to7.
I began to panic. The Ahr, usually such a quiet river, had8 its banks. And now I had to get out — fast! It was pouring. In bare feet, I started to walk to my only9: the door that leads upstairs to the ground. All around me, things were breaking — the lamps were cracking, the cupboards were being10 .
Finally, I11 it to the door. I tried to push it open, but the12 of the water wouldn't let me. I tried several times, but the wild water slammed it shut again. I grabbed everything to open the door, and finally, in darkness, I leaped onto the stairs and ran outside13.
What was once a lovely, cozy street was now a14, with floating trash and trees instead of people and cars. The river had drowned the neighborhood — and if I had woken up just a few minutes later, I would have drowned along with it. Don't remember the day when you lost everything. Remember the day when you15.

20、Many people think they need to walk 10,000 steps every day to be healthy. But new research shows this is not necessarily true for everyone. Scientists say that about 7,000 steps per day can already be good for your health.
Dr. Melody Ding did this study at the University of Sydney. She wanted to know how many steps people need to stay healthy, and whether one number could work for most adults. The studies included people of different ages and lifestyles, so the results were more reliable.
People who walked around 7,000 steps were healthier than those who walked only about 2,000. In general, walking more was linked to a lower risk of dying early, and a lower risk of heart disease and dementia (痴呆). The benefits increased quickly when people moved from very low activity to a moderate level. After that, the benefits still continued, but they rose more slowly.
Where does the 10,000 — step benchmark (基准) come from? Dr. Sean Heffron says this number did not come from science. A company made a pedometer (计步器) and called it the "10,000 steps meter". The number sounded simple and motivating, so it spread worldwide.
Dr. Martha Gulati, a heart doctor, does not fully trust round numbers like 10,000 because they are not always based on research. She suggests focusing on steady improvement instead of chasing one perfect number. Just walk a little more than you do now — take the stairs, walk after dinner, or get off the bus one stop earlier. Small changes can add up and help your health.
A. The number was easy to remember.
B. The study gave people a simple answer.
C. It became popular because of advertising in Japan.
D. She reviewed many studies about walking and health.
E. If you can't walk 10,000 steps every day, don't worry.
F. The research compared people who walked different amounts each day.
G. This may make many people feel less stressed, especially those who are busy.
