  • 1、The art of Chinese knotting, or Zhongguo Jie, has a long history in China. It is a unique form of traditional Chinese handicraft (手工艺).

These knots were used to record events and information in ancient times. As time went by, Chinese knotting developed into a decorative art.

The materials for making Chinese knots are usually colorful silk threads. They can be made into different shapes like butterflies, flowers, and lucky symbols. Each knot has its own special meaning. For example, a double-coin knot represents wealth.

First, the crafter chooses the right silk threads according to the design. Then, different knotting techniques are used to create the basic shapes. Finally, the crafter combines these shapes to form a complete Chinese knot.

In the past, Chinese knots were often given as gifts during festivals. Today, they are not only popular in China but also loved by people around the world. They can be seen in many places, such as homes, shops, and art galleries.

Many schools and communities hold Chinese knotting classes to teach this traditional art to young people. In this way, more people can learn about Chinese knotting and help keep this cultural heritage alive.

    A. Making a Chinese knot involves several steps.

    B. In ancient times, people made simple knots with ropes.

    C. People believe that they can bring good luck and happiness.

    D. These threads are easy to shape and can be knotted in different ways.

    E. Chinese knotting has become a symbol of Chinese traditional culture.

  • 2、Is the world too crowded? Well, that's a hard question to answer. It's all a matter of perspective (视角). In Montana, you might drive for a mile in any direction and not see another human being. In Macao, 60,000 people live in every square mile!

What is true is that the world's population doesn't stay the same. It has been increasing at a very fast rate (速度). That's in part because in each generation there are more people who then have children than in the last generation.

Five hundred years ago, the population of the world was about 460 million. In the 1920s, the world's population was under 2.5 billion. Right now it is doubling every 40 years. That means, if this rate of growth continues, when you are a parent, there will be twice as many people on the earth as there are now. Wow! Now that's a whole lot of people! Soon the world's population will probably reach 7 billion. Some people worry about that! But there is a lot of disagreement about just how many people on the earth equals too many people. But everyone agrees that the more people there are, the more resources the world needs to feed, house and take care of all of them, and the more need there is to think carefully about how we live and use the earth's resources.

(1)、From the first paragraph we can know that ________.

    A、About 2.5 billion. B、450 million. C、40 billion. D、7 billion.
(4)、The writer thinks that with the population increasing, we should ________.
A、find more resources B、use more resources C、think about our ways of living D、move to other places
(5)、From the passage we can learn that the writer ________.
A、thinks the world doesn't have too many people B、thinks the world can feed no more than 7 billion people C、is not sure when the world's population will reach 7 billion D、is not sure what the largest population that the world can feed is
  • 3、Meng Xiang was crazy about films and music during his childhood. When he started college, he dreamed to make films that could combine his love for storytelling and interest in music.

His biggest challenge came when he planned to make a film about a tennis player. Since no one would offer him money for a 2-hour film, Meng and his college friends tried to make a shorter one. They bought a second-hand camera and used old things instead of expensive equipment. They even made a shelf on their own to support the camera.

Meng and his friends worked hard, rain or shine. When filming the tennis player, they ran after him in the summer sun. If it rained and they couldn't film outside, they hung bed sheets (床单) on the walls in an empty room to set up a simple studio (摄影棚). This 12-minute film got much attention. The teachers and students in their college liked the music they created for it.

After that, Meng had another idea: to make a musical film. But musicals weren't popular in college, and many said it wouldn't work. Instead of listening to the doubts, Meng and his team spent weeks writing new songs and making a test video. To film the moving scenes, they fixed a smartphone on a skateboard and pushed it. The actors' hair was blowing in the wind while they were dancing and singing. The loud voice and laughter of the team filled the air.

Their musical film was well received and won several awards at a film festival. As Meng said, "Making films isn't about having the best equipment or famous actors. It's about finding new ways to tell your story. Our team is planning to make a special documentary about the environment. And I can't wait to write music for it."

(1)、How would Meng combine his hobbies according to paragraph 1?
A、By creating music. B、By starting a team. C、By going to college. D、By producing films.
(2)、What was the team's biggest challenge?
A、Few partners. B、People's doubts. C、The money problem. D、Long working time.
(3)、Why did Meng's team set up a simple studio?
A、To work on rainy days. B、To get much attention. C、To follow the tennis player. D、To film a moving scene.
(4)、What can be learned from the last sentence of paragraph 4?
A、The actors were popular. B、The team enjoyed the process. C、Meng wanted to make another film. D、The students had good equipment.
(5)、What would be the best title for the passage?

  • 6、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Growing up in a small village in the care of my grandmother affected my childhood with a mix of love and simple pleasures. Every day after school, I'd hurry to Grandmother's welcoming home, greeted by the smell of freshly baked cookies and the warmth of the fireplace. We would spend hours together gardening, baking, and especially knitting (编织). Each birthday, Grandmother would gift me a hand-knitted sweater with bright colors and complex patterns, which I held dear.

Later, I moved to the city for my studies, leaving the countryside and Grandmother behind. Getting used to the exciting city life and burdened by an increasingly demanding academic schedule, I found myself unwilling to call Grandmother. Although the handmade sweater kept arriving each year, my appreciation for it decreased. The bright, old-fashioned patterns looked out of place among the modern and fashionable clothes of my classmates.

Before my 18th birthday, a package from Grandmother arrived on time again. Inside was Grandmother's latest creation. The sweater was as colorful as ever, with eye-catching designs, but it might cause embarrassment if I wore it in school. In a moment of disappointment, I threw the sweater aside. "Why couldn't Grandmother just be like my friends' relatives who gifted fashionable clothes or smart devices? Why does she stick to such an old-fashioned tradition?" I complained to my mother.

My mother was sad when she heard my words. "Your grandmother is getting older, and her eyesight is not so good as it used to be," she replied. "Despite this, she insists on keeping the birthday tradition alive." She continued, her voice trembling (颤抖), "She rejected my advice, spending months knitting that sweater. Every stitch (一针) is filled with her love for you. She could easily buy something from the store, but she chooses to make the sweater because it means something more."

  • 10、When starting college, most students enjoy a week's stay on campus before classes actually begin.. Below are several tips to ease yourself into college life.

    Participating in campus welcome activities

Most universities host welcome events before the academic year officially begins, including freshmen orientations (迎新会), campus picnics, and entertainments like concerts. Participating in such events is a great way to learn about school facilities and understand campus culture:. What are their favorite classes? What is the history of your university? It can help you observe campus life outside the classroom.

    Exploring campus

Getting to know where essential campus resources are — such as the student advising center, psychological services, and the tutoring center will make your first few weeks on campus a lot easier. Take some time to check out the buildings where your classes will be held.. And it also familiarizes you with how long it takes to get from place to place.

Before getting too excited about all of the fun things you will be able to do during the week, remember that you do have a pretty big schedule change coming up. Starting classes means being in different places at different times, so it's a great idea to start getting used to that routine right this week.. Following the planned time will ensure you have enough sleep to get to those early classes and stay wide awake. If you have other daily routines, such as exercising or talking on the phone with family, work those into your day-to-day life before classes start so that you get a better idea of how they fit in with your schedule.

    A. Starting a routine

    B. Scheduling your life

    C. What should you do with that time?

    D. What do other students do for fitting in?

    E. What can you do to adapt to the new high school life?

    F. What helps you most is to schedule your sleep.

    G. This will prevent you from getting lost in the first few days of classes.

  • 11、Satellites are increasingly a global-communications lifeline, allowing people in remote areas to make phone calls and get online. Services such as SpaceX's Starlink, by far the largest of the networks of telecommunications satellites in low Earth orbit, have been increasing rapidly during the past decade.

This success comes at a cost. As things stand, most satellites are single-use products with lifetime of 15 years or less. Moreover, space debris (垃圾), which may cause damage to spacecraft, is a growing problem. The rapid increase in satellites raises key questions about whether humanity could or should litter the environment around Earth.

Astronomers are raising their voice in this debate. Researchers pointing their telescopes at stars are increasingly finding their observations ruined by light streaks (光条纹) from satellites flying overhead. In the past five years, some astronomers and satellite operators have cooperated to preserve "dark and quiet skies". This could involve changing a satellite's design to make it less bright or organizing activities so that astronomers can point their telescopes to regions where satellites aren't flying at any given moment.

Beyond conflicts with astronomers' observations, discussions about the future of satellites need to include voices of Indigenous (本土的) peoples, many of whom have important connection to the night sky but have long been excluded from decision-making and economic power in outer space. International discussions need to recognize the rights of Indigenous peoples in space as well as on Earth, says astronomer Hilding Neilson.

The skies are a global resource, shared by all humanity, and it is crucial that decisions about its use consider the needs of all affected parties. Satellite connectivity remains essential for many people, including Indigenous communities in remote and under-served areas. This is why the conversation about astronomy and satellites cannot be reduced to"satellites are bad and we must save the night skies for astronomy".

(1)、What is the public's major concern about the growing number of satellites?
A、They may pose a threat to the environment. B、They could increase global competition. C、They are too difficult to maintain. D、Their operational lifespan is too short.
(2)、Why did some astronomers and satellite operators choose to cooperate?
A、To provide clear views for telescopes. B、To develop new advanced telescopes. C、To identify safer orbits for satellite operation. D、To boost the global satellite communication network.
(3)、What is Neilson's suggestion concerning Indigenous peoples?
A、Protect their traditional culture from disappearing. B、Expand their understanding of space. C、Involve them in space decisions. D、Improve their access to satellite services.
(4)、What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A、Satellite development needs more support. B、Satellite connectivity's benefits remain to be seen. C、There is an urgent need to explore space resources. D、Satellites and astronomy must find ways to co-exist.
  • 12、About 300 to 350 million people worldwide are affected by colorblindness, a condition that makes it difficult to separate between certain color degrees. In nature, this means flowers, insects and animals may appear to be less vibrant (鲜艳的).

Virginia wants to change that. Crews have fixed special viewfinders at all 43 Virginia state parks so that more visitors can experience a world of vibrant colors. The viewfinders are designed for people with red-green colorblindness, which is the most common form of the condition. Subtypes of red-green colorblindness exist, but they all affect how people notice shades with reds and greens in them.

Created by SeeCoast Manufacturing, the viewfinders are equipped with special lenses (镜头) made by EnChroma that help people with red-green colorblindness distinguish between color degrees. Similar to binoculars (双筒望远镜), the viewfinders also enlarged whatever's in view.

In Virginia, the project started last summer at Natural Tunnel State Park, located near the far western tip of the state. Natural Tunnel State Park fixed a viewfinder at an overlook that offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding scenery. That first viewfinder was such a big hit that the state decided to bring them to the rest of Virginia's state parks. Funding for the project came from donations made by visitors through the "Round-up for Parks" program.

"The colorblind-friendly viewfinders aren't the only way Virginia is making its parks more accessible. This summer, Natural Bridge State Park also began offering a free mobile app designed for people who are blind or visually damaged," reports WFXR's Thad Randasso. The app provides audio instructions in 26 languages to help users find direction in the park, and also provides real-time audio descriptions of the user's surroundings.

(1)、What is the main purpose of the special viewfinders in Virginia's parks?
A、To improve the eyesight of the colorblind. B、To help colorblind people see colors better. C、To strengthen the security of the colorblind. D、To make the parks more attractive to the colorblind.
(2)、How do the viewfinders function properly?
A、Through binoculars. B、By enlarging views. C、Through expert lenses D、By changing shades.
(3)、Why was Natural Tunnel State Park mentioned in Para 4?
A、to show the success of the project B、to set an example for other parks C、to help raise the fund for the project D、to support the"Round-up for Parks" program.
(4)、What does the last paragraph focus on?
A、The future development of Virginia's parks. B、Another measure beneficial to the park visitors. C、The benefits of a project for blind people. D、More service offered in different parks.
  • 13、I used to believe courtesy was a thing of the past. Very seldom have I met a courteous human being in this modern era of the so-called Generation X.

Recently, I had to change my thinking, when I came face to face with just such a human being. I had gone to a fashionable coffee place, with two of my grown-up daughters. The place was crowded with the usual loud crowd and we had to climb a steep flight of stairs in order to find an empty table. After enjoying coffee and snacks, we were walking down the steep stairs, where the narrow space made climbing down only possible in a single file, with hardly any space for another person to either climb up or come down.

Just as I was in the middle of the staircase, a gentleman entered the main entrance of the restaurant which was right in front of the staircase. I was sure I would be pushed roughly by this man who would want to go up in a hurry. I kept coming down as fast as I could, holding on to the banister (扶手), in spite of my advanced years. My daughters were already down, looking up at me worriedly, hoping I would reach them before the stranger started up the stairs, knowing I was a nervous sort.

Nearly reaching them, I noticed the man still standing near the door. I reached my daughters and passed the stranger at the entrance door which he kept holding open. I looked back thinking he was still at the door, deciding whether to go in or find another less crowded place. I saw him going up the stairs, two at a time. I told my daughters about it and all three of us felt bad that we did not even thank the courteous gentleman who was actually holding the door open for us ladies to pass through.

We admired his kindness for both, waiting for us to come down before going up himself and also holding the main entrance door open for us to go out. To date, I still remember this gentleman and pray to God to make more human beings like him.

(1)、Before she met the man in the restaurant, the author had thought ________.
A、she didn't belong to the Generation X B、there were few polite people in the modern society C、having coffee in a fancy café was not her cup of tea D、human beings were born courteous
(2)、In paragraph 2, the underlined phrase "in a single file" means that ________.
A、walking one after another in a line B、moving slowly to avoid slipping C、walking carefully with a file in hand D、moving in pairs down the staircase
(3)、What can we infer from the passage?
A、The author was a lady in her early thirties. B、The author tended to feel nervous in some stressful situations. C、The man probably knew one of the author's daughters. D、The man was unsure whether to go in the café or not.
(4)、Which of the following might be the best title for this passage?
A、Strange encounter at a fancy coffee shop B、A narrow Escape on the Stairs C、A Man of Mystery and Manners D、An Unexpected Lesson in courtesy
