Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, droughts, typhoons, and hurricanes are all natural disasters.

The earthquake of 26 December 2004 resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in living memory. It was a massive underwater quake that occurred in the Indian Ocean. This caused a huge tsunami to cross the Indian Ocean. It destroyed coastlines and communities and brought death and destruction to many people. The survivors needed fresh water, food and shelter as well as medical help. People from all over the world gave money.

The surface of the Earth has not always looked as it does today; it is moving continuously (although very slowly) and has done so for billions of years. This is one cause of earthquakes, when one section of the Earth crashes with another. Scientists can predict where this might happen and the area between plates is called a fault line. However, earthquakes do not always happen on fault lines, which is why they are so dangerous and unpredictable.

All the disasters are very dangerous and continue to kill thousands of people each year, but they are nowhere near the most dangerous disaster to ever happen on earth. One type of event in the earth's history has regularly killed millions of beings: asteroid (小行星) impacts (撞击). About once every million years the Earth is hit by a piece of rock and ice from space large enough to cause massive destruction (including earthquakes, volcanoes and ice ages) and sometimes to kill entire species. Sixty-five million years ago more than half the earth's species were killed by such a disaster, including all the dinosaurs. Disasters on the Earth may seem dangerous, but the biggest threat to humans is likely to come from space.

A fourth-grade star athlete has made headlines for keeping up with high schoolers. However, it's not for the honor. The selfless student is a guide runner for a blind autistic (患自闭症的) teen who needs a helping hand on the cross-country track.

Rebel Hays, 11, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, stepped up as a guide runner for a ninth-grader, Paul Scot, when West Fork High School put out a call for volunteers. Paul, their student, wanted to compete.

As they ran together, the pair became good friends. "Paul and Rebel's story is so much more than running," said Rebel's mother, Lou Ann. "Paul doesn't have many friends, so Rebel doesn't just guide him a trace. They also spend time together," she said, telling jokes. "Paul is grateful for his young guide's direction." "Rebel directs me whether there's a ditch (沟) or there are hills, who encourages me to run faster," Paul said.

In honor of their partnership, West Fork High School wrote a post on Facebook. Posting on Oct.6, 2021, after a 5K race at Chile Pepper where the boys achieved a personal record of 21 minutes, school representatives explained, "Rebel Hays has been helping Paul all season long. He is a promising runner, but more importantly, he has a huge heart! Thank you, Rebel! Thank you a lot!"

According to Mile Split Arkansas, Paul said that his goal this year was to break 21 minutes; however, they missed it at Chile Pepper but achieved it at Yan Buren Pointer Classic, finishing with a time of 20:59:44. With the help and direction from Rebel, Paul finished 59th out of 135 runners in the 3A boys race at the state Meet in Hot Springs in early November. Paul still has one more year of eligibility (资格) for cross-country and has now set a new goal of under 20 minutes.

At the beginning of my Senior Two, I received my letter from the New York University (NYU) exchange program, and I was very relieved. I finally had the chance to take high level courses, experience college life, and gain some extra credits. My aim was to learn the basics of accounting, economics, marketing, and psychology.

When I arrived, I found that there were only 30 students in the program. I was so excited, but also nervous. I was worried that I would not make friends in my new environment. However, I turned out to be totally wrong. NYU hosts free events every week, giving students the chance to meet new people and explore New York City. My favorite events were the Broadway show trips. But there were always a limited number of spots. Therefore, I had to sign up online as soon as I received the reminder and hoped that I would be chosen to go.

This summer, I have watched ten Broadway shows, including To Kill a Mockingbird, Aladdin, and Frozen. Actually, I was fully attracted by the shows. Watching a performance almost every week was so amazing. On the way to the different shows, I always met someone new and we'd often chat about our lives. I was so thankful for making so many new friends.

By the time the shows were finished, it was usually late at night. However, I wasn't scared as Times Square was always so busy, filled with people and lights. This summer was the best ever and I certainly caught a glimpse into college life at NYU. Surprisingly, it is not as scary as I thought.

There are some great winter sports that are just waiting to be explored. Some are more extreme than others, but still definitely worth a try. 

Ice Skating

Invented more than 4000 years ago by the Finnish, it remains loved by so many all over the world. People of all ages can take advantage of this fun sport, as it is a great way to be outdoors and get a bit of exercise. Experts say that the more you practice, the better your balance, coordination, and flexibility will become. So put on a pair of skates and get moving on the rink (溜冰场). 

Snowcross

Snowcross is a sport suitable for people who are a bit more adventurous. Over the last several years, snowcross has increased in popularity and is one of the most sought-after forms of snowmobile races and a really trendy winter sport. Snowcross is popular in the USA, Canada, Sweden, and Finland. Sound fun? Why not give it a try? 

Ice Hockey

Ice hockey is not just one of the most popular winter Olympic sports but has also recently become a common international sport. Ice hockey is fast passed and full of energy that also involves numerous intricate (复杂精细的) tricks and movements. It doesn't only have a competitive side, it also is super fun! 

Snowboarding

Snowboarding is another really fun snow sport that is definitely worth trying this winter. It's not the same as skiing; the main difference between snowboarding and skiing is that snowboarding does not use poles and most people use softer boots for flexibility. Snowboarding has only recently been added to the winter Olympics. There are hundreds of different resorts around the world that allow you to experience this popular sport.

If you have to describe yourself to someone else, what will you say? It can be difficult to see yourself from the outside, but knowing who you are, namely self-awareness, can help you understand feelings and make friendships closer.

Self-awareness means having a good understanding of our own character, that is, having the ability to see ourselves clearly. If you're self-aware, you may know that you love playing an instrument because you do well in it, and music makes you happy, or that you prefer watching TV on your own because it helps you relax.

Knowing what you like and dislike, what you do well in and what you find difficult allows you to make better decisions about friendships, schoolwork and so on. You learn to trust your own feelings more, which builds confidence (信心). The World Health Organization says self-awareness is one of ten important life skills that help young people live happier, healthier lives. Being self-aware doesn't mean only thinking of yourself. By understanding your own feelings, you will better understand other people too.

How do you learn to be self-aware? It's a good way to ask questions. But ask yourself questions that start with "What" instead of "Why". So if you don't understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you're arguing.

Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, which means you learn it as you grow. So be bold and try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different kinds of music. Don't be afraid to dislike something - discovering what you find difficult is a key part of learning more about yourself.

According to a research, more than 130 billion pounds of uneaten food go to waste in Laura's country each year. That is about 30% of the yearly food supply(供应). It is a sad fact, especially when you consider how many families and homeless people are in hunger.

When Laura saw her school dining hall throw away food that was not eaten at all every day she came up with an idea. She started a project to help her school dining hall to give away uneaten food to homeless shelters(庇护所)in her community. In the past three years, the same project has spread to other schools and some fast food restaurants throughout the city. The project is called Feed & Find, and has already fed thousands of people in her city.

How does it work? Through an app, Feed & Find matches local homeless shelters with school dining halls and restaurants that have uneaten food to provide. When dining halls or restaurants have uneaten food left, they can use the app to share the information about the food. A truck driver working for the project is then sent to pick it up and take it to a shelter.

Pretty cool, right? It's not surprising that people in other cities have got in touch with Laura hoping that she could help develop similar projects for their communities.

Some people, however, have concerns about the safety of the uneaten food. They think such food may not be clean enough. Still, this project is a clever way to help solve the problem of food waste and it helps those in need.

The Boy Made It!

One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn't have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.

Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.

He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn't, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.

Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.

By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could he huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.

The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn't find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.

Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild. That's where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode (一期节目) of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.

When Gxrylls heard about Nicholas' amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

As I was driving to the airport last week the odometer(里程表) on my truck rotated to 100,000 kilometers. This led me to pause and think about selling the truck and buying a new one, but it also made me think about all the life I'd lived in this truck, and how my bulldog had accompanied me in it, leaving me hesitating about selling it.

When I returned to Canada after nine years overseas, what better way could I fit in with and immerse in rural culture than by buying a pickup?

The day I rolled out of the dealer(经销商) and hit the first gravel road(碎石马路) in my Toyota Tacoma  was  exciting, until  I  got  very  nervous  as  rocks hit my new purchase. But all that quickly evaporated when I received my first call through the truck's Bluetooth phone. It was the doctor, to say that my Dad was hospitalized in a remote location. I immediately followed the truck's GPS and got there quickly and safely. I was with Dad for his last two days. And so the first memories of my truck are images carved in my heart.
