Solar terms, which  (be) also called Jieqi in Chinese, are days marking one of the 24 time buckets or the solar year in traditional Chinese calendar, used to indicate the alternation of seasons and climate changes in ancient China.

As far back as the Spring and Autumn period, there were four solar terms: mid-spring, mid-summer, mid-autumn mid-winter. After continuous improvement, by the Qin and Han dynasties, 24 solar terms have been  (full) established.

Cloning is defined as using the cells of one living subject, plant or animal, to create another duplicate subject. A cloned subject will be the same as its parent. This technology could be useful for laboratory studies and for creating satisfying animals. .

One of the biggest disadvantages of cloning is that the technology is still so uncertain. Dolly the sheep, the first mammalian clone, was born in 1996. , she died young of a disease not normally seen in sheep of her age. It is still unsure whether genetic mutations might occur when an animal is cloned.

. Gene diversity is what keeps an entire species from being wiped out by a singular virus. It helps to explain why some people naturally are taller, shorter, or more athletic than others. If gene diversity is lost due to excessive cloning, there are no mutations to allow some of the cloned group to survive a newly introduced disease.

Another of the disadvantages of cloning is that there are a lot of moral considerations that would cause most people to protest. One of these ethical concerns is that cloning is unnatural. Another concern is the treatment of clones. . Humane treatment guidelines would still apply.

There is always a risk of cloning technology being abused. For example, imagine what a corrupt officer could do with cloning. There will always be someone looking to use cloning for their own personal use, and many feel that the best way to prevent this is not to pursue cloning at all.

The disadvantages of cloning are seen by many to far outweigh any benefits that might be seen. , it is a technology that many experts say may be better left alone, at least until it is better understood.

Imagine an albatross (信天翁) with a hacksaw for a mouth. Set that strange creature about 50 million years in the past and you've got the image of a pelagornithid, a group of ancient birds that included some of the largest flying birds of all time.

Now paleontologists have uncovered in that group what may be the largest known flying birds ever, with wingspans of roughly six meters. By comparing a pair of polar fossils to the remains of related birds, paleontologists have been able to identify the early history of huge fliers that were some of the first birds capable of flying across seas.

During the 1980s, University of California Berkeley paleontologist Peter Kloess says, scientists searching for Antarctic fossils found some delicate bird bones—a jaw and part of a foot from an ancient bird.

The bird jaw, which came from a rock formation laid down over 37 million years ago, looks almost like a woodcutting tool rather than a bone. The jaw has a series of large and small spikes, outgrowth s of the beak that are similar to teeth. Because of that feature, the paleontologists immediately identified the jaw as belonging to a pelagornithid, also known as bony-toothed birds that have a very long fossil record. The oldest pelagornithids evolved about 56 million years ago, and the most recent flew through the skies about two million years ago.

The foot bone came from another large Antarctic pelagornithid, but its real importance was in its age. The fossil was found in a rock layer in the La Meseta Formation, about 50 million years old. This falls within a time called the Eocene, when life had recovered from the asteroid-induced mass extinction and was thriving again. Together, the foot bone and the jaw indicate that large bony-toothed birds thrived in the Antarctic for millions of years.

Paleontologists have found bony-toothed birds from places all over the world, from New Zealand to South Carolina. The newly-described Antarctic fossils, though, are the oldest known and hint that these birds quickly diversified into a range of sizes within six million years of their origin. Previous studies have calculated that the largest of the bony-toothed birds could be near the limit of how big a bird could get and still fly, meaning these birds are the strongest competitors for the largest flying birds to ever fly.

Those impressive wings would have allowed the pelagornithids to range far and wide, flying long distances on outstretched wings. That helps explain why fossils from various species of pelagornithids have been found all over the world during their extended evolutionary period.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is America's fifth largest city. Once a major American colonial city, it is the home of America's first library, its first hospital, and its first zoo. Now it is also the first US city to be named a World Heritage City. On November 6, 2015, Philadelphia joined more than 260 other cities that have been recognized for their influence on the world. These cities include Paris, France, Florence, Italy, and Cairo, Egypt.

The exciting news was announced by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger, responsible for economic development and business guidance, and the Global Philadelphia Association. "Today marks the start of a new and exciting chapter in the history of Philadelphia," remarked Nutter when the announcement was made. "As a World Heritage City, Philadelphia is being officially recognized on the global stage for its wealth of contributions to the world."

To be named a World Heritage City, a city must be home to a UNESCO World Heritage site. UNESCO World Heritage sites are selected for their universal value and significance. For Philadelphia, the site is Independence Hall.

Independence Hall is where two of the most important documents in US history — the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution — were adopted. The Declaration of Independence, approved on July 4, 1776, united the 13 former British colonies and declared them independent from British rule. From then on, a democratic and free country was born, which changed the course of world history. The US Constitution, signed in 1787, established the American democratic system of government. A democracy is a system of government in which the people elect their leaders. The Constitution later spelled out the basic freedoms American citizens have.

Greenberger says the city's selection as a World Heritage City also reflects its educational, cultural, and economic achievements. The city is home to dozens of colleges and universities, and many museums, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. "Philadelphia has rightfully earned its place as one of the greatest cities in the world. As we celebrate this milestone, we will focus even more on improving Philadelphia's status as a World Heritage City to attract more guests to visit, invest, work, study and live here." Greenberger says.

Humans have been exploring the infinite abyss (深渊) beyond Earth's atmosphere. When astronauts explore the vast expanse of outer space, they need to wear high-tech spacesuits to protect them from the freezing conditions of the universe.

Hollywood movies have idealized the iconic suit, its design leading the masses to believe it's an outfit that can be slipped on within minutes. In fact, the spacesuit which is made up of nearly a half dozen different components and can have up to 16 layers is its own fully functioning spacecraft that takes hours to put on and requires help from one's colleagues.

The astronauts on the Artemis missions, NASA's next program to send the first woman and the first person of color to the moon, will wear the latest spacesuit, called the exploration extravehicular mobility unit, also known as xEMU, according to NASA.

Each spacesuit has a portable life support system, which includes a water tank for the cooling garment and carbon dioxide removal system to regulate body temperature, remove excess heat and maintain the astronauts' health, said Richard Rhodes, the deputy lead for xEMU pressure garment development at NASA. A two-way radio system is also included so the astronauts can communicate during the missions.

"When the Apollo astronauts walked on the moon, they couldn't bend over and pick up a rock," said NASA astronaut Mike Fincke. Fortunately, spacesuits have come a long way since then and have a more flexible structure with gloves. The gloves are one of the most complicated parts of the spacesuit, said Cathleen Lewis, curator of the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. "Gloves are very difficult to design to be protective and also allow the manual dexterity (灵巧) that astronauts need to do meaningful work." she noted.

The spacesuits will also be getting some upgrades for the latest lunar mission. Richard Rhodes's team is working on the spacesuit that will allow for more movement to explore the rough terrain of the moon while still being strong enough to protect the wearer.

Shot in more than 40 locations in L. A., the musical La La Land is "a love letter to the city". To coincide with UK release, we asked a local writer to pick some of the film's amazing settings.

Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange

La La Land's opening scene is a six-minute dance that plays out in L. A.'s bad traffic. It is also where the film's leading roles, struggling actress Mia and jazz pianist Sebastian, first encounter each other—in a road anger incident. The scene is said to have been filmed over two hot days in south L. A.

Smokehouse Restaurant, Burbank

This is the setting for the scene in which Mia discovers Sebastian's talent for the piano. The fictional Lipton's restaurant—where jazz purist Sebastian was reluctant to play Christmas music —is in reality a place long frequented by actors producers and other show business types. It has been on this spot, across the street from the Warner Bros studio, since 1949. In the film, the outer wall of Lipton's is the You are the Star mural, which feature s Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin and others, which is on the corner of Holly-wood Boulevard and Wicox Avenue in Hollywood in reality.

Warner Bros Studios, Burbank

Mia works at the studio's coffee shop, where Sebastian comes to meet her. As they wander the studio's lot, Mia points out "the window that Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman looked out in Casablanca." It's one of the film's numerous nods to movie history. Warner Brons is still a working studio, with 35 sound stages, 14 exterior sets and visitor tours.

Cathy's Corner, Mount Hollywood Drive

This section of the road that winds through Griffth Park is the setting of their dance play. It overlooks the San Fernando Valley and features on the film poster. Cathy's Corner is near famed Mulholl and Drive, but prepare for disappointment if you're expecting a park bench and street lamps, which only exist in the movie.

I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters, my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still afford a dream. 

My dream was athletics. By the time I was sixteen, I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but often told me "Dream is priceless". However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular incident happened, which almost ruined my long-held dream. 

It was the summer holiday in senior two and a friend recommended me for a summer job. I was offered $ 12.25 per hour. Compared with the average $3.5, that was a big sum. I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect(前景)of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity. 

Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule. I didn't dare to tell my coach, I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, "If you make your bed, you have to lie in it." I decided to talk to my coach in person. After all, my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me.

Paper-making is a reflection of ancient Chinese wisdom,  (regard) as one of the Four Great Inventions of China. Among various types of paper in China, Xuan paper, traditionally handmade in Xuancheng, Anhui province, is famous for its close associationChinese calligraphy and ink paintings. 

The (early) mention of Xuan paper is in On Famous Paintings Through History, a book by a scholar from the Tang Dynasty. It listed many characteristics of Xuan paper, like its stability, its durability and its(resist) to insects. Yet positioned it as an ideal medium for calligraphy and painting is its capacity to display various ink shades. Such are the features of the Xuan paperit has gained favor among artists and calligraphers across generations. 

With the growing popularity of Xuan paper in recent years, the industry has expanded  (dramatic) in Anhui. Last year, large quantities of Xuan paper, to be precise, about 500 metric tons,  (produce) in Xuancheng,  engaged more than 30, 000 local people in the industry. Currently, the local government is building a Xuan paper cultural park and a Xuan paper town (develop) cultural tourism.

In recent years, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have brought both excitement and concerns to various fields. One area where AI is making a profound impact is the medical field, particularly in the domain of diagnostics（诊断学）.

Al-powered diagnostic systems leverage（利用） deep learning algorithms（算法） to analyze medical images, such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. These algorithms can detect subtle patterns and anomalies that might be missed by human radiologists, potentially leading to earlier and more accurate diagnoses.

However, the integration of AI in medical diagnostics raises complex ethical questions. For instance, who should be held responsible if an AI system misdiagnoses a patient's condition? Should AI algorithms be treated as medical professionals, with legal and liability implications? These questions become even more intricate when considering that AI systems learn from vast datasets of medical information, which might contain biases（偏差） or inaccuracies.

Furthermore, the adoption of AI diagnostics could impact the role of healthcare professionals. Some argue that AI could enhance doctors' capabilities by providing them with additional insights, while others fear that it might replace human expertise, leading to job losses and a potential decrease in the quality of patient care. Despite these challenges, proponents（支持者） of AI diagnostics emphasize its potential to improve healthcare accessibility, especially in underserved regions where there is a shortage of skilled medical professionals. Al-powered diagnostics could provide preliminary assessments and recommendations, helping to bridge the gap between patients and healthcare providers.

When you encounter animals, do you wonder what they're thinking? Seeing a newborn lamb or a cute puppy might arouse happy emotions (情感) in us, but what are they thinking? Does the look on their face and how they behave indicate how they're feeling - or are they feeling nothing at all?

Humans have a complex range of feelings, but it's hard to tell what's going on inside the heads of animals. Some of us own dogs because they are good companions, are loyal and seem to connect with us. We might even think they love us. Professor Kim Bard, an expert in comparative developmental psychology from the University of Portsmouth, told the BBC: "We have a few studies now that actually show scientifically that some dogs will respond when their owner - but not a stranger - pretends to cry." The empathetic ability of cats, however, is harder to work out.

Other non-domesticated (非驯养的) animals might have feelings too. Giraffes and whales, for example, are known to experience sadness when someone in their group dies. It's believed that even tiny creatures like insects might have emotions as well. Research is beginning to show they experience a wide range of feelings. Kim says "they can be optimistic, pessimistic, or frightened, and respond to pain just like any mammal would."

Dr Barbara J King, Emerita Professor of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary, told the BBC: "If we understand the profound depths of emotions animals can feel, this should make us question the existence of zoos and slaughterhouses (屠宰场) around the world, and rethink those systems. It does seem all creatures feel emotion, but what is not clear is do they feel the same way as us?"

Jamil Jan Kochai, the author of 99 Nights in Logar, searched for more than a decade for Susan Lung — the second-grade teacher who had changed his life over 20 years earlier. On Saturday night, the two were finally reunited at one of his book-reading events.

The writer was born in a refugee camp for Afghans in Peshawar, Pakistan, and his family moved to California when he was just a year old. At home, they spoke mostly Pashto and some Farsi, so by the time he reached first grade, he was at a total loss because he could hardly speak English. Then came Mrs. Lung, who quickly realized that Kochai was deeply struggling at Alyce Norman Elementary School.

The two got to work, meeting for one-on-one lessons nearly every day after school. At the end of the school year, Kochai won reading-comprehension competitions.

Lung and Kochai lost touch when Kochai's father got a job in another city and the boy moved on, with a new love of reading and writing. When he grew older, Kochai's parents encouraged him to find his former teacher to thank her. But despite his efforts, he failed to track her down.

"I didn't know her first name. She was always just Mrs. Lung to me, so when I called places to ask about her, they couldn't find any records of her," Kochai said.

Then, while promoting his first novel, he wrote an essay for Literary Hub magazine touching on the transformative impact that Lung had on his life. Lung's doctor happened to read it, and told the now-retired educator about that.

Lung's husband saw a Facebook post about Kochai's reading event on Saturday in Davis, California and suggested he drive his wife there.

"I had no idea they were going to be there," Kochai said. "It was just like a sweet dream. Mrs. Lung was sitting in the front row. She was just the same Mrs. Lung. Just as sweet, kind and warm as ever."

Kochai and Lung hugged, and Kochai finally got the chance to express to her how much he still thought of her and how much she meant to him.
