Robots with artificial intelligence (AI) have been tested in care homes in the UK and Japan. Initial tests show that the robots reduce loneliness and improve the mental health of elderly residents.

The robot, called Pepper, was developed for a project called CARESSES. which is trying to create robots that behave and speak like the people they're helping. To do this, Pepper uses a new type of AI that gives it "cultural competence," or the ability to adjust how it speaks to different people, taking things like age, culture and religion into account.

The robot is autonomous and can remember things about the people it talks to, ask questions and make suggestions for activities. It can play the radio and is also able to remind people about important dates or to take medication.

The test project, which ran from 2017 to January 2020, was funded by the European Union and the Japanese government. The study found that older adults who spent up to 18 hours over two weeks with the robot saw a significant improvement in their mental health and a small decrease in loneliness. However, only 45 people participated, so more research is needed to confirm the results.

"This study is groundbreaking because it is the first and largest ever investigation into the use of autonomous social robots for older adults in care settings," said Dr. Chris Papadopoulos of the University of Bedfordshire, one of the universities that worked on the study. "Poor mental health and loneliness are significant health concerns and we have demonstrated that robots can help relieve these." However, according to users, there were some problems, like distracting head and hand movements, not enough cultural awareness, and surface conversations.

Papadopoulos said that Pepper is still being developed and it would take two to three more years of research and development before similar robots could be used in care homes. He also said Pepper wouldn't replace human careers, but could help to improve the mental health of the elderly.

A new study has shown that playing an instrument or singing in a choir may promote your brain. It explains why generations of parents have told their children to practice their musical instruments. Parents have good reasons to lay emphasis on their children's musical education since learning an instrument is not only associated with cognitive (认知的) performance but also intelligence scores in children. But does this musicality translate to better cognition later in life?

A recent study in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry investigated this question by asking middle-aged and older people to complete a questionnaire on their lifetime musical experience before completing cognitive thinking tests. The results showed that musical people had better memory and executive function — the ability to stay focused on tasks, make a plan, and have self-control — than those with less or no musicality.

A good memory is important for playing a musical instrument, such as playing music from memory, and this seems to translate to people's cognitive performance. Similarly, executive function is required when playing an instrument, and it translates to improved cognitive performance too.

Although most people in the study played an instrument for only a few years, this finding was similar, regardless of which instrument people played, or the level of musical proficiency (熟练) people acquired.

What makes a difference, however, is whether people still play an instrument or only played in the past. Those who still play an instrument show higher cognitive performance. This makes sense as continued engagement in cognitively stimulating activities should result in continued brain health benefits while having played the guitar for three years at primary school might not have such a big impact on our cognitive performance later in life.

Robert Kurtz finds himself right in the middle of a composting (堆肥) revolution. Kurtz is a manager at Rust Belt Riders, a composting company based in Cleveland, Ohio. Its goal is to meet the challenge of climate change by recycling as much food waste as possible.

"If we're going to meet the climate goals, we have to deal with food waste," Kurtz said. "It's a huge part of the problem." Wasted food winds up in landfills. As it breaks down, it creates methane (甲烷), which traps heat in the atmosphere and fuels climate change. The average family in the U.S. spends $1,500 per year on food that doesn't get eaten. Businesses waste food too. That's where Kurtz's job comes in.

Out in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 60 miles off the northwest coast of Africa, lie the Canary Islands. In the 1950s, the boom in package tourism showed promise as a new cash crop. But while the Canary Islands had the sunshine, warm climate and ease of access from Europe needed for this new industry, they were missing a vital element picture postcard sandy beaches.

So the developers on Tenerife in the Canary Islands constructed a breakwater (防波堤) over half a mile long. And then, from the Western Sahara on Africa's northwest coast, they shipped in 270, 000 tons of sand. By 1973, the project was complete. As anticipated, tourists arrived. Along the engineered beach, rows and rows of tourists relax on beach chairs under umbrellas or walk across soft sand to cool down in the water.

Unanticipated was what their presence gave to one of the world's most endangered fish species, angel sharks — visibility. The gentle wind creates tiny waves on the water's surface, a magical cover for what lies beneath — an angel shark nursery. Female angel sharks regularly migrate to these ideally sheltered waters to give birth to pups (幼崽), who remain in the shallows for about a year. Feeding on small fishes, they grow to around the same length as a newborn human baby.

Surveys have shown that other beaches in the Canary Islands are also potential nursery sites. Interestingly, most of them have been remade to make them more attractive to people. Playa Chica has another long sweep of imported sand. It's an attraction for divers as well as angel sharks, so the number of sightings of mature angel sharks of this shoreline is one of highest in the islands.

Normally, massive, environmentally disruptive projects are bad for wildlife. But what's clear is that after the breakwater was built and the sand arrived, people followed, and in the calm, shallow waters they began to see baby angel sharks. And unlike how many an association between humans and wildlife ends-in conflict and dead animals, this time it led to conservation.

To study the behavior of wild animals, scientists routinely tag them with solar-powered GPS location trackers. But such devices' battery capacity limits how long they operate, often bringing a nearly end to vital conservation work. Solar-powered trackers break easily, making them a poor choice for devices fastened to larger mammals and they don't work for night creatures.

So biologist Rasmus Worsoe Havmoller of the University of Copenhagen and his colleagues turned to another abundant power source: kinetic energy generated by an animal's movements. It is also lighter and cheaper to make than its battery-powered counterparts (对应的事物). "The design is creative and exciting," says Mark Hebblewhite, a habitat ecologist at the University of Montana. The proof-of-concept kinetic tracker works by means of a magnetic pendulum (摆钟) that swings around a copper coil, generating electricity as it moves.

Their kinetic tracker, which Havmoller's team recently tested on domestic dogs, a wild pony and a European bison, could theoretically survive for the entire lifespan of an active animal. The dogs and the bison in the study were active enough to create the energy to transmit one location signal per day for 14 days and 17 days, respectively. However, one of the less active wild pony's trackers lasted at least 146 days but didn't produce enough power for daily transmissions, the researchers reported in PLOS ONE. The limited power generated by the animals' movements means the technology isn't ready for primetime just yet, says ecologist Emily Studd of British Columbia's Thompson Rivers University, who wasn't involved in the study.

When researchers want to keep close tabs on animals, they often need GPS fixes more than once a day. But Studd says that "with a bit more development, this could be a game changer for wildlife animal research and monitoring."

Rasmus and his colleagues hope conservation workers can one day use this technology to track species such as tigers, leopards and wolves, which can easily destroy solar-powered trackers and which hunt and travel at night.

Last summer on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai, Tina Taniguchi worked close to the ground. Her coconut leaf hat covered most of her thick brown hair. Wet soil had gotten on her clothes and her smiling face.

Taniguchi smiles a lot while working on the Hanapepe salt land on the west side of Kauai. It is a piece of land about half a hectare in size with pools of salty water. The salt becomes crystals (晶体)as the water dries.

"The work is tiring, but for me it's also play," Taniguchi said with a laugh. Taniguchi's family is one of 22 families who make salt, following a cultural and spiritual tradition. Hanapepe is one of the last remaining salt lands in Hawaii. Its salt can be traded or given away but must never be sold. Hawaiians use it in cooking, healing, and as protection.

Over the past 10 years, there have been several threats to this field. They encompass development, pollution from a neighboring airfield, damage to the sand from vehicle traffic and waste left by visitors to the nearby beach. In addition, rising sea levels and weather might stop the practice.

A"spark bird"is the species that inspires someone to start bird watching, namely birding. For Trish Kane, that bird was the cardinal(红衣凤头鸟). Hearing cardinals' calls was an initial step toward over 1, 960 hours of birding, 33 field notebooks and a career change. In her book, Birding to Change the World, Kane charts her transformation from a journalist to an environmentalist

In 2005, a terrible hurricane hit Kane's hometown. After it, she had to cope with the loss of her home. In watching the cardinals and other birds, she found relief. Soon she started bringing her students along. "My students stared at me in disbelief when I told them I had never cared about birds before, "Kane writes. "I suddenly wondered how many creatures would die because of the way we lived. "She decided to pursue an environmentally-conscious career. In 2007, she took a course to study environmental science. 

Most of the book focuses on Kane's efforts to preserve Warner Park, an ideal location satisfying birding requirements for her class. She successfully campaigned to stop the construction of a parking lot. Her activism snowballed into a local bird watching and protecting organization. It eventually became part of Kane's doctoral research, and launched a birding class that pairs middle school students with college-student advisors. 

The book shows readers that a good knowledge of nature doesn't require a degree. Take Jeremy, a seemingly uninterested boy in Kane's birding class. When reporters joined an outing, the normally quiet Jeremy started talking excitedly about the bunting, a small blue bird. Kane soon learned that he had secretly taken to studying the field guide given to him by his advisor.
